Wow, the best steakhouse in New Zealand. Hands down. We went to many other steak restaurants, but this place was the best. When they brought out the raw meat platter, we knew right away what we wanted! Wagyu beef and lamb chops. Unbelievable!!! But their appetizers were amazing. The bone marrow was so good that I picked up the bone and I wanted to suck all the juices (I didn't.) and the raw oysters were amazing. So good that my kids had more oysters for dessert. But the way they cooked the steak, it was delicious. I highly recommend this steakhouse. It's a must if you're in Auckland. read more

Good atmosphere and interior. We have tried booking here on the same day or the day before and usually they don't have tables until quite late. This time I was prepared and booked 2 weeks ahead. Hahaha turns out the Thursday we went wasn't even a full house. Strange. We booked online and then they double confirm on the day by calling to make sure. Service was excellent, from booking to ordering to serving and until you step out the door. Very friendly and helpful staff. We ordered a beautiful Nevis Bluff 2009 Pinot Noir, fresh natural oysters, 1kg rib eye for two, truffle steak fries, and lastly the cauliflower and cheese. That Pinot was smooooooth, pricey but totally worth it. Oysters were fresh and juicy but I'm not much of a fan of those so can't judge them. Medium rare rib eye melts in your mouth and the knife just glides through. Cooked to perfection. He loves the garlic butter but I couldn't get enough of the blue cheese sauce. There was a lot of fat on the steak though. Truffle fries were delicious, so fragrant and the flavour is so intense and nice... Couldn't stop eating them. The cauliflower and cheese was a bit bland but that's the only negative for the whole night. We left extremely happy. FYI they sell a 600g of Wagyu beef steak for $310 ! Haha wow ... read more

Great service and delicious food! My husband and I read the great reviews and decided to give this steakhouse a try yesterday and we were not at all disappointed. Our server, Erin was top notch. She was delightful, extremely helpful going over the menu and checked on us often. The steaks were heavenly and we highly recommend the chipotle hollandaise sauce. The potato puree and Mac n cheese were delicious. If we ever return or visit New Zealand this place will definitely see us again. We were very satisfied with our experience. read more

Surprisingly Jervois with all its great consistent reviews did not deliver across the board on our night. The food once we finally got it was great, my medium rare eye fillet steak was perfectly cooked and the Syrah & Truffle sauce although a little runny was very tasty. I liked the Truffle fries and tried others sides around the table eg Kumara mash and Mac n Cheese and they were all nice. It was just the service that let the night down. We had been there an hour before we got to order, 3 dishes and 3 wines we never ordered came out and therefore the bill was a mess by the time we came to pay. I think there is loads of room for improvement in the service department. read more

We ate at Jervois after a long day exploring Auckland and then Shakespear Park. Some steakhouses over-serve you with side portions that are too big for you to ever really eat. This is not that place. My husband had the hanging tender and I had the Signature Prime Rib. We had two sides and everything was absolutely great. We licked our plates clean and were not wasteful and yet didn't feel like overstuffed blobs by the time we left. Our only regret was not trying the oysters. read more

The name is self-explanatory, really. It's a steakhouse on Jervois Rd. But it's so much more than a regular steakhouse. With some of the best service and waitstaff in Auckland, a traditional-but-works setting, and amazing food, this is a special place and a regular haunt for those who must satisfy their bovine craving. It can be underwhelming if you're expecting a world of perfection, but it usually hits the bulls-eye (yes, pun intended). However, as much as I like Jervois, it's not quite there for me. In the early days, yes, it would easily make its way into my top five favourite dining places. But the more I fell for its charm, the bigger those minor imperfections grew. I have never had good dessert at Jervois. It's something I have completely and utterly given up on and the reason for which I cannot give Jervois the four stars they completely deserve. And it's not just very average desserts I've had. Twice I've had to return desserts (a deconstructed rhubarb crumble and chocolate fondant) because they were completely unsweet - a fundamental element you'd think. So, I've completely given up on dessert. Still, do go for the steak though - it is quite sacred and quite delicious - steak tartare was delicious and the sauce (the horseradish and truffle bearnaise and spinach and gorgonzola sauces are to die for). read more

Ate here tonight and I still think it's probably the best place for a steak in Auckland. Yes it's pricey. But it doesn't get much better than JSH when you're looking for a special treat. Our party of 4 decided to skip entrees and head straight for the main course, which did mean we were left waiting quite a while for our food to arrive, but it did not disappoint when it did! The ladies all went for the petite eye fillet and the gentleman went with the rump which was a pretty hefty portion of meat! The steak is good enough that you really don't need a sauce but they quite a lot of different options if sauce is your thing. We had roasted beetroot (a special), the candied kumara (my fave), the trio of mash & creamed spinach for sides. All delicious tho the creamed spinach was a bit on the salty side for my personal liking, noone else complained tho. Chocolate fondant was decadent and the gooey chocolate center made my mouth do a happy dance. Panna cotta (a special) was velvety smooth and creamy although light. Chocolate dipped figs were a treat as well. Not the kinda place you go all the time, but most definitely a nice treat once in a while! read more

An excellent restaurant with great food and great service! My steak was cooked perfectly, so tender and tasty. The sides were just a tasty, I had the creamed spinach, mac and cheese fritters and mashed potato. Mixed opinions on JSH for food and service. On one hand the side dishes were really good - the crispiest truffle fries, candied kumara, beetroot with feta and walnuts, crumbed mac 'n cheese - but the steak, the very thing they should have got right, was just okay. Mine wasn't cooked as I'd ordered and lacked flavour. Dessert was a perfectly cooked molten pudding, so ended on a good note. Service was haphazard, no less than five things arrived that were not ordered and had to be sent back. So at bill time, there was a bit of confusion. Jury's still out on whether I'd return. read more

This very nice steak house with a good selections steaks. We were shown sample steaks before ordering, and then the one we to be served before they were cooked. My steak was cooked per order, nice and rare. We had sides that were delicious. All of the food was rich and tasty. The service was nice and even slightly humorous. You should eat here. read more

Pretty disappointed to be honest. I made a booking for my husband's birthday dinner online. We made a booking at 20:30 online, and showed up at like 20:32. We were escorted to the bar for a drink while they were getting the table ready. We both ordered cocktails to get things started. I think I had the smallest martini in the world. It was literally three sips. The bartender even shook the shaker as if she was expecting more to come out. My husband's old fashioned wasn't stirred enough and had heaps of sugar granules at the bottom. He returned it, to then get a a back handed comment about how my husband needs to stir it while he drinks it. We know this isn't true; an old fashioned should be stirred until all the sugar is dissolved, which is why it tends to be more expensive because of how laborious it is to make. Icing on this cake at this point was a group of three that came about 20 minutes after us was seated first. Not sure when their booking was, but they waiting all of 5 minutes before they were seated. I am usually really easy going when it comes to waiting for a table, and am happy to wait. I do appreciate them giving us regular updates - but don't seat people that arrived later than us first when half of the restaurant is empty. Once we got seated, we order some bread as a starter. To make it more interesting, the people that were seated before us were sat right next to us. The the restaurant at that point was 90% empty (at this point it was after 21:00 on a Sunday night). They came back to tell us they ran out of bread starter. Luckily, they did offer us any entree at the same price of the bread starter. Shortly after that, the table next to us got the bread starter. We ended up sharing the steak for two, which was delicious, but wasn't anything spectacular. They talked us into getting it done medium (we prefer rare), and of course my husband got all the rare bits (it is his birthday after all!) and my portion was mostly well done which was a bit stink! The wine list was unimpressive, but I would say that it is reasonably priced ($10-15 a glass on average). Funnily, the mac n' cheese fritters were the best part of it all! I would also give them props to giving my husband a little birthday treat. The presentation was lovely (who doesn't love happy birthday in chocolate, really!?) Overall... the food was meh and the service was meh... was a bit disappointed as I was under the impression that this was the best steakhouse in Auckland. read more

After we got passed the man on the door who did not have an inviting manner we were led into a beautifully appointed restaurant where every detail was stylish. The food was amazing served to us by a very charming staff member who did show a sense of humour. The wine selection was a delight to choose from. For us it is a special occasion venue as quite expensive . Could see why though as top quality in all aspects of the dining experience but not in a 'silver service ' way. read more

Love the decor and ambience. Cocktail recommended - Blueberry dreaming. Very refreshing cocktail with a hint of lemon and cranberry. Delicious steak. We got a cut of the filet bone-in and scotch filet waikuna medium rare with the horseradish sauce. Tender and velvety finish. Side dishes highly recommended - whipped potatoes and my personal favorite, the mushrooms prepared in parchment paper. Wow! Incredible and flavourful! We also ordered the side caesar salad and caprese salad. Would have preferred to have them come out first, make sure to request if you want them or at the beginning of your meal experience, otherwise, everything was wonderful. Host could improve in attitude. Seemed stressed out and quickly snipped "How can I help you?" I assume he must have been under pressure by the look on his face. Forgivable but needs improvement! This was a special occasion outing for my family - a double-birthday dinner and it was superlative from go to whoa. Real attention to detail, balancing genuine quality with accessible friendliness. My son, on the way home, was trying to think up new special occasions that would warrant a return trip. I often think it must be challenging for restaurants to balance a clientele mixed of couples of dates, family groups and 'businessmen entertaining', but they did it really well. read more

Don't be fooled by the 4.6/5 rating. We had the worst lunch at Jervois steakhouse today. We booked their lunch special (buy now steak your claim) - 2 sides + 2 main + 2 wines for $85. We walked into the restaurant and had to wait for 5 minutes for the host. There was no greetings whatsoever. Our server was the most incompetent waitress I've ever encountered and couldn't even speak proper English. She was clueless about the lunch special and the oyster pricing, absolutely ridiculous. We knew the menu 10x better then she did just by looking online while booking , seems like they don't train their employees. She took our order wrong and did not apologize whatsoever. After our lady server served us the wrong food she never came back again. The dishes were also a joke. The side of forest mushrooms tasted like it's got 10 pounds of salt added into it. We called the server to complain about the mushrooms and he did not apologize at all. The petit eye filet was also cooked poorly - extremely hard to chew and we had to split out every single bite because it was too rough to swallow. The "truffle"Mac & cheese was undercooked and extremely floury with no taste or scent of truffle or cheese. The lamb was the only good dish we tried, and we gave them credit for it. During the entire lunch, no one ever checked up on us or poured us more water. We had to wave at the server multiple times to request for anything and their attitude was just as bad as their food. When we finished our unpleasant lunch, no one greeted us or said thank you - nothing, as if we were nobody. It seems that if you are not Caucasian, be prepared for no service or attention. They checked and poured water for other tables but not for us. All the servers were extremely rude, unwelcoming and ignorant. Don't ever waste your bloody time or money at this "famous" 4/5 ratings steakhouse. It should be -100/5 rating. read more

Reservation for 7:30, we arrived early, too early 7:15. They couldn't seat us so we went to the bar, no worries. Then when we were seated upstairs we notice at least 10 empty tables. We all look at each other wondering why we had to wait to be seated with so many empty seats. When we were done with dinner at least 8 tables were still empty. So 1/2 star off. Then once seated it took a while to get water or even have anyone come over to us, at least 15 if not 20 minutes. We almost walked out. Another 1/2 star off. Finally when the waiter did come over to us and runs down the specials, we tell him we are ready to order, but he walks away. We were all confused why that happened. Another 1 star off. Food was good, but expensive. I had the beef ribs, 3 of them. However, this was misleading. It was 1.5 ribs broken in half to make 3. Meat was very sparse, typical of ribs, and mostly fat. Plus 3.5 pieces of bread was $7 and any sides are another $7, if I remember correctly. Wow. So, expect small portions and a very large bill. read more
