Well, a bit disappointed with our "offshore" fishing trip this morning. I hesitate posting a negative review, but I want to make sure others don't have a similar experience. Every year, our family does an offshore fishing trip in the OBX. We tried a new boat, the Miss Hatteras out of Oden's dock, this year. They advertised "off shore" ocean fishing, and the reviews and Facebook posts looked great! Upon boarding the boat, the Captain said we would be going 9 miles offshore. Sweet! Then, as we approached the channel to go into the ocean he said the tide was too low in the channel to go offshore (as if this was new news... Tide charts are pretty reliable and it was mean tide). We ended up drifting the same spots for 3 hours - fishing in depths of 5-9 feet of water. We circled through the same spots. How do I know? Well... We kept passing the same people fishing from the shore. There were even times when I thought, "hey, our lines are so close they could cross. Maybe we should be fishing from the shore, too!" After the fourth pass in the same exact spot with no fish, my dad asked our mate if we might try a different spot. A few minutes later, the captain came over the loud speaker and said, "to the person who complained asking why we weren't going to the ocean- it's too shallow. If we go, you'll end up spending the night in the boat on a sandbar". Not what we were asking... On a positive note, the mates were TOP NOTCH and did a great job keeping bait on our hooks and striking up conversation. We found out from them the channels need to be dredged so the larger boats can get out, but the government doesn't have funding... So this isn't new news. At the end of the day, I caught a small (7") spot, and there were a handful of smaller fish caught by other people on the boat. The common feeling on the boat was disappointment the trip was advertised as something the captain clearly knew could not be delivered upon. Perhaps the Miss Hatteras could find a different dock with access to the open ocean, or petition government officials to dredge the channels. Otherwise, they should stick to being a party boat and ditch fishing all together. read more

The cruise was OK although not much effort was made to locate any Dolphin. Captain Stowe who NEVER introduced himself, takes a straight line out and the same line back and I guess if they get lucky, you see some Dolphin. If not, OOPS... Too bad they haven't invented any type of fish finder that might help...hahaha...I would have still given a 4 star if not for the deck-hand sending us to the back of the line because they are idiots. Idiots you say? Well, you decide. Here are the facts. Just the facts and nothing but the facts. WE, unlike 90% of the people checking in, purchased the tickets online prior to the cruise. We received 2 confirmation emails with directions. There was no ticket to print out, but we are in the age of cell phones, sooooooo, I brought along my trusty phone with the confirmation email. All I should have needed right? If you're wondering what could go wrong, stay with me, We arrived 40 minutes early because it's first come first seated. The first ones on the cruise would obviously be able to select the best seats which is what the plan was. So what went wrong you ask because we were FIRST on line. HMMMM....The deckhand untied the rope and about 100 people walked up the plank to the boat. We got to the front and the deck-hand said, I AM SORRY, YOU CAN NOT BOARD. YOU HAVE TO GO TO THE TICKET BOOTH TO GET YOUR TICKET. I showed him the confirmation email and he said, SORRRRY!!! you have to get your ticket. As we wiggled our way down the ramp past the other 98 people, we were banished to the END OF THE LINE. WTF!!! We walked to the ticket booth where a very nice lady asked me for my last name. She looked on the list of about 8 people who also bought online and gave me a business card that said, ADMIT ONE which I took back to Derrick Deckhand and he politely allowed us to board. Why didn't Derrick Deckhand have the @#$%^&*() list of names that already bought tickets. Why couldn't he call the ticket booth. Why didn't one of the confirmation emails tell us to GO TO THE TICKET BOOTH TO GET YOUR TICKET. All in all, I would recommend the cruise for the money it was a pleasant 1 1/2 on the water. We got back to our condo in Nags Head and while walking along the beach, saw 2 groups of Dolphins. Wonderful evening. read more

If you want to enjoy a boat ride get on the ferry for free. No attempt is even made to see dolphins. I only gave it 2 stars because you can bring a cooler with adult beverages. Otherwise I would give it a 0. read more

Both captin and 2 mates were great. The day we went out was not the best weather. Fishing wasn't the best either. But the captin promised us we would catch fish. And finally one spot we hit I caught 7 trigger, 2 snapper and 1 nice sea bass. Both mates were super professional and were there for every possible need. read more

I am writing about the Miss Hatteras Head Fishing Boat that goes out 30 miles into the Ocean to fish for bottom fish. We went out for the full day trip and paid $120 per person. The boat was meant to depart at 6am but eventually departed an hour late. There were 28 people on board the boat when we left the Harbor. If you like fishing and want to catch big fish above 5 lbs. this is not the boat for you. However if you are a novice that has never been offshore, it will be a reasonable to try this boat with the family to experience it, and decide whether you like fishing or not. Anyway it will be a nice experience, and learning experience for you and your children. Captain Spurgeon, and his crew Natalie and KP ( a couple BTW), go above and beyond to help their customers. On the day we went out there was a current that prevented fishing from one side of the boat because the lines ended up under the boat. The Captain decided to let one side fish, then move the boat around so that the other side could fish. Twenty eight people fishing in a current, and most of them being inexperienced is a problem for someone that has fished off the surf previously. It takes a lot of patience when you realize that someone 20 feet away is snagging everyone else, and it can be very frustrating, but the captain constantly moved around looking for fish. On this particular day we caught Trigger Fish and Red Snappers. It would have been good if the Ocean current cooperated, and if our fishing time was not cut in half. However we cannot blame the Captain and Crew for this though. Captain Spurgeon seriously needs to upgrade his equipment. His reels have lost all their torque, and you struggle to lift up six pounds. A two pound weight and a 3 pound fish. I do not believe that his equipment can catch anything bigger that five pounds. I would recommend taking your own equipment, or purchase a boat rod and reel for the trip that you can use later. Sea sickness will happen, and you can get sick even if you taken medications. Load up on pickled ginger (the ginger that you eat with sushi), or ginger tea the night before, and in the morning before the trip tp prevent sea sickness. Take the medications as well. Overall I gave this boat a score of 3 because my intention was to go out fishing, and a crowded boat with bad equipment did not make my experience enjoyable, but the friendliness of the Captain and Crew made up for trip overall. read more

Went on the 1/2 day trip and had a good time... however I would STRONGLY recommend to EVERYONE (regardless of how strong you think your stomach is) to take something for motion sickness/nausea 30 minutes before departure! Getting over the breaking waves on the tip of the island is not fun, and I would estimate about 1/4 to 1/2 of the people on board got sea sick. ON THE UPSIDE, the Captain knows his stuff and he and the mates are super friendly. In between overdosing on Dramamine I was even able to catch a nice-sized Triggerfish! read more

We did a 1/2 day trip. The fishing was terrible but the crew was great. The waters through the Hatteras inlet made for a fun ride! Our side of the boat was taken care of by Natalie and she was very patient and funny. I would love to go back again and hopefully catch something to bring home. Went out on all day trip to gulf stream. crew was great, fishing was good. best to bring own equipment with high speed reels to save your arms!! only complaint was that there should be a smokers section or designated area for smokers as their second hand smoke is nauseating, especially when rough conditions persist. read more

Went on Sunset Dolphin cruise. Very little was done to locate dolphins. No attempt to educate us on the area, dolphins, or any communication at all. The worse part is that even though it was a sunset cruise, we docked 10 minutes before sunset. Waste of money! read more

I've been on the offshore trips twice in August. Both times I had excellent fishing for mostly 4-5lb trigger fish and sea bass with all sorts of other fish being caught including larger wahoo, barracuda and amberjack. Most of the other reviews are accurate. Don't go on a windy day unless you want to get kicked around by the sea...That's just common sense. And bring your own equipment if you can because the Senator reels they provide are okay but slow. Captian and mates are A+ and very friendly. Only problem I ever experienced was getting up at 4am and showing up when the boat didn't go out because it was too rough and windy, but it was the right decision. read more

We've been clients of the Miss Hatteras for as long as we've been coming down to the Outerbanks. A huge highlight of coming to the OBX is taking a charter fishing trip. The crew is always every friendly and courteous! This year, my daughter and I bought tickets to ride the Miss Hatteras. However, we were extremely disappointed as our trip was cancelled due to "low sign up". We were offered to come later in the week as, according to the lady who called, they had enough people to run the boat. Unfortunately, we are to return home less than 24 hours after the next fishing date and couldn't chance we'd catch loads of fish and have it go to waste on our return trip home (1500km drive back to Canada)! So, we declined. Needless to say, my daughter was very sad and heartbroken. After this incident, we will think twice about signing up again. read more

I went on both the 4 hour trip for $50 and the full day trip for $120. We caught fish both days although the 4 hour trip was more of a struggle overall as we kept moving to find the fish. Both are basically the same trip you are bottom fishing for trigger fish, snapper, etc. It can be tiring as there are so many people on the boat and you are jigging nearly 2 lbs of weight and then reeling up 200 ft. It was worth it as I have never been fishing in the ocean and this was a cost effective way to do it. As another reviewer said though don't expect to catch anything huge. Between both days there probably wasn't anything over 5 pounds caught although the catch was plentiful. The mates KP and Natalie were excellent. read more

Don't waste your money. You can't fish and expect to catch anything on this boat. There had to be close to 50 people on board. That gave you maybe a 2 foot space to drop a line. Every time you did about eight lines would tangle. The day we went was so rough they should had cancelled the trip. It was miserable !! Half the boat was sick and throwing up. Waves had to be 6 foot. You couldn't stand, much less fish. That showed me they only cared about the money they were making not the well being of there customers. read more

Went on Wednesday with Captain KP, we've been going for years with captain Spurgeon and KP and also Natalie. KP did an excellent job getting us on the fish, caught spade fish, vermillion and the guy next to us got a shark. All in all we had a great day, thanks Captain KP, you rock. My wife and I took a sunset dolphin cruise on the Miss Hatteras, and had a wonderful time! I got lots of nice pictures of both the sunset and dolphins, and it couldn't have been a nicer cruise! Well worth the price. read more

Very disappointing. It was very difficult to fish because of the amount of people on the boat. Every time you dropped in the water you were watching someone else's line. The captain told us we were going to get dinner and every fish we caught was way too small. Don't waste your money unless you want to untangle your own line for 4 hours. Also, we had to drive around to 5 different spots because we couldn't find fish, which is hard to understand because they should know the hot spots. read more

The pirate tour was an absolute joke! It was nothing like what was advertised. They told no pirate stories, did not have a water fight with another ship or do any of the cool things listed in the description. Took 8 people out on the Litle Clam on 8-11-11. Wasn't explained to me earlier that one boat went further out than other, or should I say, that it wasn't told to me that I was placed on the inshore one. No biggie, cept' the fish weren't bit'n... generator didnt work. they said it was first time, but I see from reviews thats not the case. and,,last, but definitely not least, crew was very friendly & nice, but the one guy smokes while working...and ashes & second hand smoke made it a miserable trip! you usually get what you paid for, and $45 is cheap, but in this case, I don't believe we even got our monies worth. I take a trip on the Miss Hatteras almost every year I visit the Outer Banks. Have I been seasick before- absolutely!! That's the risk you run being on the ocean. I recommend Dramamine the night before your trip and then in the morning right before you leave....it helps :) I ALWAYS have a great time on the boat- the crew and captain are top notch.
