The day we ate at Mission, walking to the front door we see a Veterans parking spot located right near the entrance. Right off, this to me is a signal that this is a place of substance. We even got to thank an elderly vet for his service on our way in. The food is SO good and a great price. The memorabilia on the wall is a touching testimony to the commitment by this company to honor those who risk their lives down to serve and protect others. I have been coming to Mission BBQ for a long while and thought I'd finally leave a review. I order the pulled pork and fries almost every single time I come and it does not disappoint, with my favorite sauce the Memphis belle bbq sauce it pairs nicely. The fries are very fresh and go well with all the bbq sauces. The food comes out super quick after ordering, usually about 6 min for me. The complimentary cornbread is also very good and goes well with the bbq The staff are very friendly and there's one guy that I see every time that is the most helpful worker, with replacing bbq sauces to getting you forks and raking your plates when your done. The restaurant is very cool and decorated with a lot of service memorabilia of the army, navy, coast guard, Air Force, police. It's very cool to look around and see all the items while your eating. I took my daughter and her beau, To Mission BBQ, you know. On Beltline Ave, we did go, In Grand Rapids, MI, for a show. We each got two meats, oh what a treat! Lean brisket for all, pulled pork for the kids, And smoked sausage for dad, quite the feat. But the brisket was dry, though still a hit, We ordered it lean, but drier than fit. My daughter loved the pulled pork, oh yes, Her boyfriend's mac and cheese, he didn't bless. The sausage was good, fresh off the grill, But cold, it grew chewy, lost its thrill. I had baked beans with brisket, divine, My daughter's fries, she did decline. Corn casserole cold, but tasty still, The price was decent, fit the bill. The restaurant was clean, a sight to see, The staff was friendly, as friendly could be. But the busser, oh my, too eager to please, Kept asking to clear, more than at ease. It has been over five years since I first reviewed Mission BBQ. In a somewhat crowded GR BBQ market, I believe Mission BBQ is now one of the better BBQ places in Grand Rapids. As I mentioned in my first review, I'd be back and I can estimate I've probably been back 30 or so times. Brisket is no longer bland and turkey is no longer dry! I've enjoyed these along with pulled pork and ribs. Sides are also very good including hand cut fries, Mac and cheese and baked beans. Consistency has been a strong point here. What I also really like here is large to go orders do not get in the way of customers dining in. There are other local BBQ places that do a large take out business and it is always at the expense of those eating in resulting in horrendously long waits. (imagine waiting for a catering order for 50 when you just want a sandwich) Mission does a great job separating the two types of business. There is also usually often an employee working the floor always willing to assist or bring you whatever you need. Great, friendly staff! I regret not doing an update sooner. We walked in to try them because we may use them for wedding catering. We loved that they have all the police/military/EMS memorabilia everywhere as my fiance is a Firefighter/Paramedic. We loved everything we tried but the brisket and creamed corn was our favorite! They had an employee, Jim, who was awesome! He was more than willing to help with extra sauce and to go containers. Mission BBQ catered a wedding reception this past weekend for our family. From our first reaction with their people it was a very positive experience. The food tasting was fun and delicious, and the selections were a bit challenging as they were all very tasty. They came out to our home for a sight visit and were very polite and thorough. The day of the event they were on time, dressed appropriately and the presentation was beautiful. They were so accommodating as we ran a bit late. The food received rave reviews from our 250 guests. After our event they helped clean up and packaged up the extra! This is not my first experience as we've had them do corporate events. Our family has dined here several times now and it is quickly becoming our go to barbecue spot with great service and great prices. You can't go wrong . I love the variety of barbecue sauces that are out at the tables for you to enjoy . Though this is a counter-service BBQ joint, the service is notably good. Not just average, or meh, or something you wouldn't even notice. They actually seem to care. Each team member is kind, attentive, and willing to help you. Even after you have ordered your food and brought it out to your table, without being annoying, they casually interact with you to ensure you have everything you need, that your order is right, and offer to help in any way. A few staff members spend time getting to know you and have a great sense of humor. You have been there several times with a group of 10 or more, and the order is always right. Another reason for such a strong service score is that Mission BBQ offers free sandwiches to all active-duty service members and veterans. Honestly, for a chain, we left pretty impressed. We were in the area and wanted some quick but not actual fast food. The line moves quickly and the staff was very friendly. Our large tray a food was sitting on the counter for me before I even finished filling my drink. We ordered the meat combo with 3 meats and a bunch of sides. We ordered the jalapeño/cheese sausage, chicken, and brisket. Our sides were 2 orders of mac/cheese, green beans, and coleslaw. The variety of sauces on each table make it fun to try different things! The brisket was probably our least favorite of the 3 meats but we still enjoyed it. The sides were all delicious and we loved that the mac/cheese and coleslaw were not overly runny. We were also given a piece of corn bread which was very good. The dining room was very clean and they had employees constantly cleaning throughout our meal. The atmosphere from there is set in homage to First Responders and the Military. I ordered the the 3 meat platter ($16), plus the XXL Combo ($5). I got Brisket, Pulled Pork, and jalapeno and cheese Sausage. All were very good and tender. Nothing was dry. It also came with cornbread that was yummy. For the XXl combo I got baked beans and the monthly special Sweet baked potato with cinnamon butter and lastly a Lemonade. The sides were very good, most bbq place either have good meat or good sides. It's really nice to find a place with both. The lemonade was excellent. My only negative was the bbq sauce was only okay. They all tasted similar and very thin. The person I was with got Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Turkey. She really liked it. She loved the cornbread so much she got 2 more pieces. She also got a blueberry cobbler that she said was excellent. The counter service was very good. Very friendly and did a good job. Overall a 4 1/2 star review. I got the brisket, sausage, fries, baked beans, and corn bread. The meats are smoked and have the smoky flavor. Don't expect much seasoning on the meat, but that is ok. They have 6 sauces to choose from on the table. The 3 I tried were really good for my taste. The same goes for the wife. The sausage was excellent to me. It was just right with the seasonings they used. I thought the fries were going to taste over cooked by the way they looked. Not at all. They were good. The baked beans were really good. They had a very bold flavor to them. Very rich and has brisket in it. So rich, I had a problem eating them all the first day. I did reheat the sandwich and beans and they reheated great. They don't have table service and the seats are kind of hard. The price was actually less than I thought it would be. Just over $26 for the both of us. That included our pop. My boyfriend and I got some food from Mission BBQ for takeout during the pandemic. We haven't dined in but I ran inside to pick up our order which we placed over the phone. Our food was ready in about 10 minutes which was great. I ordered a brisket sandwich and mac and cheese since that's what I always get when trying a new BBQ place. I liked that you could request a moist or lean cut of brisket, since I like mine a little fatty and decadent. The brisket was piled high on a soft bun that held up well to the meat. The mac and cheese was delicious, ooey gooey and super creamy. I didn't know which sauce to pick so I asked for a recommendation, and it was a smokey BBQ sauce without much heat. I had the brisket (juicy) with pulled pork, green beans cooked with bacon and the cornbread included. Everything was really good. For a chain, I was impressed. He delivered out food to our table, although it did not seem to be required as some people stood and waited for theirs. My friend and I ordered three pounds of meat (brisket, turkey and pulled pork) to go plus sides on 21 October 2024. After we got home, she noted that there was no corn bread. I personally don't want corn bread but she loves it. I submitted a comment on the store website and as of 9 November 2024 they have not responded. I did get some corn bread from Meijers so that helped. The second issue is that the brisket was just adequate.
