Banging bbq in Grand Rapids! A super find thanks to the reviews on Yelp…read more After a week on the shoreline of Lake Michigan, I was hankering for something good. I needed to stop with my family before we headed to the airport. I spotted this one on the map when searching for highly rated restaurants, and thanks to their handy-dandy online ordering system. I knew that we could plot a course get there eat our food and be on our way. No time to make our flights later this afternoon. I don't think any of us knew how delicious this meal was gonna be, but we were all glad that this was the stuff we chose to make. The smoked chicken wings were immaculate and the brisket was perfection. We also of course had rib tips and a whole slew of sides, including the smoked mushrooms and coleslaw and Housemade, tater tots, mac & cheese, baked beans and probably a few others I'm forgetting. We couldn't pick a favorite literally everything. Was that good And the sauces? Yeah, those are banging and beyond creative too. That green sauce was straight fire, and that Alabama weight style also nice for cooling things off. But if all of them were fantastic, and it was fun to make a match and find your favorite combo as we demolished the entirety of the order. Which is funny because when we placed it, we were kind of thinking this sounds like a lot of food and we didn't want any leftovers, but there were no leftovers to account for not because we ordered and forced ourselves because it was that good and we needed every bite available. Make the trip!

I ordered the Sloppy Scott and got a sandwich with incredibly flavorful and tender brisket ends, coleslaw with a lot of crunch, and pimento Mac and cheese that was incredibly creamy and delicious. The brisket had just the right amount of spice that let you know it was there. If I lived in Grand Rapids Two Scotts would be a regular stop for me.

I ordered the southern comfort bowl and choose brisket as my meat but I believe you can get 2 different types of meat if you want. It looks kinda small coming out of the truck but it was super filling! It was literally so tasty, the brisket was cooked perfectly, the Mac and cheese layer was delicious and I really am not a fan of creamy coleslaw or baked beans but these both pulled the whole bowl together. I would DEFINITELY order this again!! It was really fast to come out of the truck after I ordered and I thought the prices were extremely cheap and shocking for a food truck considering this was some of the best food truck food I've had in a while. I hope to order more from their menu in the future!

I think the Chicago dog and the Italian Beef with the au jus on the side were solid, but nothing to write back home to Chicago about. Better than Portillo's, kind of reminded me of Mr. Beef almost. Getting the sandwich wet is usually the rite of passage, but I went for the au jus on the side. Don't make the mistake I did. Everything just falls out of it when you tilt the sandwich to dip it. Also, if you think you can eat hot giardiniera peppers, just think for a quick sec longer because these ones were pretty hot for someone who has a decent heat tolerance.

It was portioned correctly. It just was very bland compared to what else you can get in Grand Rapids. The chili cheese fries also were not horrible but I wanna say they were great. It is just gas station cheese and chili from a can. Again, not horrible just nothing special. Overall, I probably wouldn't recommend this place but I also want to steer someone away either especially if you are drunk and at the bar across the street. I'm sure it tastes much better. That being said, I think it's a perfect restaurant for its location. There is not a ton of competition directly next-door or across the street. And technically, the Bar across the street has food of a similar quality however it is a nice alternative It's up to you. There's much better places in town for hotdog however, I would give the spot another shot to try the Italian beef. I have heard it is not excellent, but I have not had it Personally.

I thought an old fashioned was an old fashioned, but this one was delicious and available for happy hour, can't beat that! Then at the bartenders recommendation, I had the meatballs for appetizer and the hangar steak for entree. First, the meatballs, very good, I'd give it a 4/5 minimum. Portion was very respectable, meant for a shareable appetizer but it was just me lol. The ricotta is a delicious touch. Then the hangar steak. It's the best steak I can remember having in a long time, and on a relatively inexpensive cut such as a hangar. I just can't express enough how impressed I was with it. And I'm not a sauce with steak type but the aioli just completes it so well. 5/5, and I'm pretty picky. If I come back to Grand Rapids I will visit here at least once.

I ordered the Westerner Plate (2 meat sandwich on Texas bread) with two sides. I ordered the brisket and pulled pork for my meat combo (at the recommendation of an employee) and the meat was so moist and flavorful. I creamed spinach and bbq baked beans for my sides. I haven't had southern creamed spinach in years, and let me tell you it was VERY creamy (so tasty). The bbq baked beans were a smidge spicy (which is a bonus for me), and very flavorful. There are three bbq sauce options: sweet, spicy, and original. I got spicy and original and combined them on my sandwich. Definitely didn't need a lot because the meat had its own flavor and was moist (as was the bread - not dry or too crunchy, just right). Check it out, especially because the price for what you're getting is fair!

I was surprised at how long it took for the 2 hosts to greet us - as we were standing directly in front of them. They were talking to one another, and it was probably work related, but to just stand there staring at them for a couple minutes while they ignored us was awkward. When they finally talked to us they weren't very friendly. Anyway, we made our way to the bar and it was full except for 3 seats. I think the bartender waiting on us was new. He seemed like he was pretty overwhelmed/in the weeds. He greeted us quickly and brought us waters when he did, which I appreciated. I ordered a Blackeberry Bourbon Sour and my Mr had Paloma Nuestra. We both enjoyed our drinks they were refreshing and well crafted. For dinner I had a really hard time deciding! I wanted to try so many things! Our bartender said his favorite thing in the menu is the chicken and rice bowl. That was something I was considering and decided to go with that. Excellent recommendation! The chicken was flavorful and so tender. The hot peppers were a nice touch. There was a lot of food too! I couldn't finish it all. Mr had the hanger steak that was served with mushroom and asparagus risotto. He said the risotto was the best he's ever had, and I agree. The asparagus was perfectly cooked and so was the steak. The space is really nice, felt intimate without being overcrowded. We are looking forward to coming back!

What a disappointment, but not nearly as much as our experience at 123 Tavern. We came in at 4:15PM before the Brandi Carlile show needing a table for a party of 8-10. The place was fully booked (but only half full at that time) except the bar (first-come, first-served). Fair enough -- but from the moment we walked up, the manager at the host stand couldn't have cared less. She quoted a two-hour wait, shut down my question about sitting outside with a flat no, and pointed us toward the bar. No sense of customer service at all. Like zero. The three of us who were there took the last open seats at the bar. Then came the real show: one bartender for the entire restaurant AND bar. He ignored us for ten minutes. My wife and friend got their beers quickly -- but my bourbon sat finished at the service station for another seven minutes while I watched the large ice cube melting as it marinated there. When I finally asked where my drink was, I got "I'm working on it." When he did finally bring it, he pushed it across the bar at me -- no apology, no eye contact, his attention on anything but me. I'll be honest about what I can't prove: I've worked in this industry a long time, and the whole thing read like my service got intentionally slow-walked. My drink held back while everyone around me was taken care of. Maybe the front manager said something after our rocky start at the host stand. Maybe they're just all bad at their jobs. I can't tell you which. I can only tell you how obvious it felt from the barstool. Everything after was the same; menus, ordering, closing out, all a slog. I had to hunt down that same manager for our check so we could get to the show, and she was all attitude, zero help. We only escaped because my wife flagged a server who found a another manager. His response to hearing all this? "I'm sorry." Nothing else. No attempt to make it right. For the first time in my life, I left $0 on a $100 tab. I'm a 25%+ tipper. That's how badly this went. Here's the thing, 123 Tavern: if you're going to bill yourself as a place to gather before events, staff the place and train your managers to act like they want customers there. Until then, I'll spend my money somewhere that values it.
