Very nice place to get some barbecue in the Madison area not too far from the college campus. The inside of this restaurant is very nice and clean including the public restrooms. Great location and friendly staff. This visit was however an unfortunate miss. The brisket (ordered Moist) was dry and chewy, as was the pulled pork. The ribs were just okay. Mission BBQ locations generally provide a consistently good experience and I wouldn't be apprehensive to coming back, but today's $23 meal was not very good. This place was amazing from the moment we walked in Alejandro at the register was so nice. He came around and even shook our hand and welcomed us. He suggested things for us to try and we enjoyed the food so much. All the barbecue sauces are so fun to taste. I loved how at 12 noon. Everyone in the restaurant stood up and looked at the flag and sang the Star-Spangled Banner (it felt good in my heart ) And to make it even better, Gladimar came around knowing it was our first time and gave us free dessert amd coupon to return. I haven't been to a place this great in a long time. I love their business plan. I think it's going to work well in this area. Wish I had one of these where I lived. I'd be going there all the time. The place is like new clean and very nicely kept. I will always support a place that supports our veterans and Mission BBQ is no exception. The food is always good and the staff is smiling and courteous. My husband is a Navy vet and after we sat down with our food we noticed Navy personnel could get a free sandwich. My husband asked about it and they got him one to go and then gave us each a peach cobbler. Stopped in while killing time. Most BBQ places only offer you the fattiest cuts of meat that are more fat than meat. Here you can get cuts with less fat. Which was perfect for me. 6 Different sauces to choose from. The Texas Twang was my favorite. The coleslaw was really good. Baked beans were ok. Did have a slight vinegar taste to them. We really enjoy good bbq and this was one of the first places that we tried after moving to the area and few months ago. The staff had always been friendly and welcoming when we place our order. The restaurant is decorated in honor of those who have done public service, which some may find polarizing (we don't). The menu options are pretty typical for a bbq restaurant and the food is good. Probably the only thing that I've been disappointed with is the smoked turkey. The sides are typical and not overly remarkable. The portions aren't huge, but appropriate for the price. I had quite a pleasant experience here from the ordering to the eating in. The staff is all following COVID precautions and the staff were super friendly and very knowledgeable of the menu. Staff would sanitize after each customer and were great at checking in on customers if they needed anything. Truly A+ service! We ordered some of the ribs and the meat platter with sausage, brisket, and pulled pork. We also got a side of mac and cheese which was decent, but could be a little more ooey gooey cheesey! Each other came with delicious cornbread (not too dense but also quite moist). If you know me by now, you know I'm the sauce master and the staff gave me awesome recommendations! I usually never choose the mustard sauce, but was told that it's a must to eat with the sausage and now I can 100% recommend that as well. It's a MUST -- sausage with the mustard sauce. The Tupelo Honey Heat had a slight heat but was great with the brisket. I also got to try the Memphis Belle which was like a BBQ ketchup - tangy and delicious. For the meats we tried, my favorite was the sausage hands down. I will try the jalapeno cheddar next time! I also liked the brisket and pulled pork with the sauces. The ribs were good, but were on the drier side, but the flavor was definitely there. I would recommend this place for anyone needing a BBQ fix. We went to Mission BBQ on Saturday, it has been a while since I've been there. The service was amazing fantastic. I like the seating in there too. Most importantly the food was perfect!! We each had different things. I had brisket and jalapeño sausage. Brisket was moist and fall apart tender. We also ordered the 1/2 yard bird which was also delicious and tender. This place is EXCELLENT on many levels! First, they are safe for people (and kids) with peanut and tree nut allergies. Maybe not important to everyone - but those with allergies it can be super important. I contacted Mission BBQ to see if it was safe to bring my daughter. I got a quick response back from the Regional Director of Operations and he was very careful to check and collect information for us. Turns out in some locations the buns (bread) at least currently come from a nut-free facility. Plus he mentioned that they have Gluten free french fries too which is good for my brother. Second, we visited the restaurant today and walking in was very impressed by the delicious smells and how CLEAN the place was. That's so comforting. Lady at the register was SUPER nice as was everyone working there. Our order came out very fast and again with a huge smile and helpful attitude. We even had two people swing by our table later to check on things and see if we needed anything else! Top notch! The food was very good too. I had a Brisket Sandwich and some baked beans - my wife had the Pulled Pork from their "Meat Market" menu section. Both were cooked well - good portions - very delicious. There were at least 6 different sauce choices... we tried 5 and all were very good. Lots of options for everyone. We already want to go back to try other things. For the cost the food was ok but not something I'm jumping to revisit. Portion sizes were alright. Meat tasted processed/ not freshly made. Provides you with 6 different bbq sauces to choose from. The greens had a lot of vinegar in them. Beans were swimming in a ketchup sauce that overpowered everything. First of all, let's get the burning question out of the way - is this the best barbecue in Madison? Absolutely not. North and South Smokehouse is substantially better in every way that matters, from the quality of the food to the service to the ambience. That doesn't mean Mission is bad, but it is definitely not the best. Mission is clearly designed to be the sanitized version of what Midwesterners think a Texas BBQ joint should be. Everything feels like the cleaned up, Disney-fied version of an actual Texas smokehouse. That doesn't make it inherently bad, but anyone that thinks this is what a "real" Texas smokehouse is like has clearly never been to one. So, the food. I tried the meat sampler with multiple sides to try to get an overview, if you will. The first thing I noticed was that EVERYTHING was lukewarm. The meats, the sides, all of it. Given the service style (pseudo-cafeteria), I know my food wasn't sitting out for more than a few seconds after being put on the tray, so that tells me the meats and sides were likely kept at lukewarm temps in the kitchen.... So, temps aside, what about the food? The pulled pork was fine, although a bit dry. The same can be said for the room temperature brisket--fine but a bit dry. I didn't see any smoke ring on the brisket and I didn't get much smoke flavor from it at all, but it was edible. The jalapeño sausage was a massive disappointment. It was dry and tough. I ended up eating two bites and leaving the rest. The beans and potatoes were also room temp (there's a theme here), although these were arguably the most flavorful parts of the meal. Oh, and another sign this isn't a real smokehouse--no white bread served with meal. That's a dead giveaway. As far as the myriad of sauces go, Mission leans HEAVILY towards sweet sauces over spicy/vinegary sauces. While that may reflect the preference of the generic consumer, it really doesn't represent a lot of what barbecue is. If you follow my reviews, you know I just spent several days in Memphis, and I guarantee you that the Mission version of Tennessee barbecue sauce bears almost no resemblance to any of the sauces I had when I was there. The Mission version was FAR too sweet and syrupy in comparison. I made a point of sampling all six Mission sauces, and the only sauce that I did not find cloyingly sweet was the Kansas City one. So, after all of that, would I come back? If I were in the neighborhood and needed a quick lunch, possibly. If I was looking for anything beyond adequate fast barbecue, I would likely pass. read more

We'd been to Mission BBQ in Florida, so we knew it was likely to be good. This is in a nice location by East Towne Mall, although parking may be a bit limited due to strip-mall competition. They have a nice selection of meats and even seafood (salmon). SO is partial to their beef brisket and particularly likes the fact that they specifically ask if he wants lean slices. I love their turkey, although I may try the chicken next time. They have sliced meats or sandwiches - we prefer just the meat. You can add 1-2 sides and a drink, which bumps the price per person up a bit, but it's still fairly reasonable, especially given the portions. You get 5-6 good sized slices of whatever meat you've ordered. Sides include the standards - baked beans (ok, but a little heavy on the vinegar for my tastes), potato salad (very nice - chunky and good crunch from the celery), fries (decent, nothing special), and others I haven't tried yet - geeen beans, mac and cheese, other potato option maybe? We also got the peach cobbler this last time and it was terrific. Free refills on drinks and the sweet tea is quite good. It's essentially counter service, so not much to say except that they're pretty fast and very polite. Definitely has moved into our Madison rotation, even if it's across town from our usual haunts. read more

Lots of small things to look at inside. I ordered the brisket and sausage with fries and cornbread. I can't remember the sauce I used but it would have been sweeter rather than spicy. My friend liked his barbecue as well. It's hard to find good barbecue in Madison, but this place is good! Finally stopped in here and was not disappointed. Hubby ordered the spare ribs with fries and cole slaw. I had the Black Plate Special which was grilled BBQ shrimp with baked beans and cheesy potatoes. Our daughter had sliced brisket sammich with fries. We all had large drinks in the reusable cups. It's a bit pricey for a lunch spot. $72 for the above. The food was very very good though! They did forget one of our sides of fries and the baked beans but that was not a huge problem. Took some time to get more fries as they cook to order. The fries that came out with the meal were not hot and they were kinda floppy. But that's all I have to say that was not kind. The ribs were fall off the bone tender without big globs of unrendered fat that I despise. Very good BBQ sauce. Cheesy potatoes, cole slaw were pretty good. Baked beans are good but there is an aftertaste we couldn't quite place and didn't quite care for. Because they messed up the order and we had to wait for our other side of fries, the manager brought over 3 cups of their cherry cheesecake and that was phenomenal! So creamy and tasty. We forgot all about the fries fiasco. LOL Daughter's brisket sammich was tender and flavorful. She loved it. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and had excellent flavor. The jalapeño sausage was okay. Little on the generic side. The baked beans... they were certainly the star of the show. Overall the brisket was moist and simple. No overpowering smoke or rub flavoring. They offer 6 different sauce which is usually a sign that the meats are less than stellar. But in this instance the meats were alright. In this case the 3 meat sampler is the same price per meat ($6.35) as the 2 meat sampler. Strange choice. And the 3 meat sampler is not a lot of food. $19 for something you could easily eat in one sitting seems pricey. Maybe the owners are followers of Prospect Theory and wanted to raise their prices in one sharp, shock rather than increasing them in multiple increments over time. Casual dining. You place your order at the back of the restaurant. We went early afternoon after the usual lunch rush. Placed our order and it was ready in about 16 minutes. Hot and delicious! Perfectly smoked pulled pork, 1/2 smoked chicken and the smoked ribeye. Staff is very professional and friendly. There is always someone walking around the dining room asking if everything is good and if we needed anything else. A unique assortment of barbecue sauces at each table. We chose not to use it because the flavor without it was amazing. Only drawback was the air conditioning was too cold and it was noisy between customers and music. As far as chain BBQ goes, this place is doing okay. It's not going to knock your socks off, but it's solid enough. The sauces are good, and if you happen to get the brisket when it's at peak perfection, it's downright delightful. I've had great brisket there, and I've had shoe-leather brisket. I guess it depends when you get there and who prepares the meal. The prices are a little on the high side for what they offer. For my little family of three, a $50 bill is the norm. Mission makes no bones about who they're pandering to with their decor and insistence on playing the National Anthem at noon each day. I suppose some would find it appealing, but to me it's kind of a laughable choice. I do support their good work with their charity causes, and I appreciate that.
