I have never been to a Mission BBQ I didn't like. Even going on Father's Day for lunch, the line was out the door, but we only waited about five minutes before we were able to order. I've tried other items on their menu, but I always end up going back to the brisket- perfectly seasoned and prepared. Add a little of my favorite smoky sauce to it, and its like heaven on a plate. Even my two and a half year old daughter loved it! The mac and cheese was its usual melted deliciousness. They all have the same great patriotic themed decor, and lots of friendly staff to help out. Mission BBQ - The Tennessee Tower - Barbeque Near Me - Sterling, Virginia

This restaurant opened in May, and is quite an experience. It's very military oriented from the service line where you order, to the national anthem every noon, to the flags, to the quotes on the walls, to the sports teams to the metal food trays and buzz cuts on male staff. When they come around asking if everything is ok, i want to jump up and shout "Sir,Yes SIR!" But the meat is delicious. The smoker is a big military truck parked in the parking lot and the smell is heavenly. I've tried almost everything on the menu now, and it's all been good. My favorite is the half yard bird, which is half a chicken seasoned with their pork seasoning and smoked. The meat is so flavorful and tender that it literally melts in your mouth. The ribs, which you can buy by the bone have a lot of meat, are full of flavor, moist and fall off the bone tender. My mouth waters just thinking of them. Brisket, pulled pork or chicken, are all good, but come in quite a bit after the yard bird and ribs. I've had the salmon, once it was dry, the second time not as dry as it was over cooked and tough. The turkey first time was dry, but better the second time. Portions are generous, meat is served by 1/4, half or pound, The sides are also good sized, and the quantity of french fries is amazing. Fountain drinks are refillable, and you bus your own table, though if you sit long enough one of the staff will come by and clear it for you. They have 7-8 sauces, 6 are bbq variations, one is a horseradish mayo and a couple of vinegar sauces. There is a stand with drawers that have straws, lids, moist towelettes, salt, pepper, mustard and catsup and small containers to put bbq sauce in. Fountain Drinks are self serve, but they also have bottled beer, sodas and juices. It's in the old Applebee's that burned around Christmas, so there are booths as well as tables and benches. There are several outside tables you can get to only from inside. Plenty of parking, and also one space reserved for vets. The first time i was in there the manager announced that one of the patrons had been in four wars WW2, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq and the whole place erupted in applause. I think i've seen that old guy back there each time i've gone, so he must feel welcomed there. Anyway, it's definitely a dining experience! read more

I'm going to give Mission BBQ 3-stars basically for their 'mission', business model and service experience. As far as the food product , I probably would have given 2-stars. I ordered the baby back ribs and was disappointed. While there was nothing wrong with the flavor or pork quality, it was in the preparation. I was expecting that 'char-grilled, smoky, flame kissed flavor' with just the slightest of tug when eating. These ribs, while they were as advertised "falling off the bone", had more of a pork roast consistency like the baby backs you bake in the oven. Famous Dave's is the standard bearer for excellent smokey char grilled ribs IMO and these just didn't fulfill my need for that grilled rib experience. I would probably return and order something else of the menu next time and save the rib craving for FDs. read more

Finally a good BBQ spot close to me!!! I really enjoyed both the beef brisket and pulled pork sandwiches as well as their Mac & cheese. My biggest issue with this place is their peach cobbler and cornbread. Their cornbread is something they need to work on.. I've had boxed cornbread better than theirs. I also didn't like the amount of butter sitting on top of their peach cobbler. I had to drain mine out bc it was excessively buttery. HOWEVER, Their sandwiches, fries, and mac & cheese is spot on! Delicious authentic southern Barbecue. The brisket was delicious and the wide sauce variety was a real complement to the meats. My wife had the pulled pork/brisket plate and I had the brisket. Served with a delicious side of cornbread. The fries were fantastic and you can tell they weren't from frozen. To the owners- my only recommendation is that you serve the brisket with a side of onions/pickles/jalapeño. You're can't call it Texas inspired without a chunk of onions and some pickles. Very impressed. I am not a huge chain restaurant fan, but mission BBQ hit me differently. I tried take-out, for the first time, and was thoroughly impressed with the brisket and ribs. The brisket was tender, juicy, and flavorful, and likewise for the ribs. The baked beans were delicious as well! To top it off, their sauces make all of it taste even better. I've been here a couple times, once on father's day and once on a Saturday at 430. They handled the crowd well on father's day, but it seemed like the pick up area was a bit crowded. I thought maybe it would be better on a non-holiday. It was still pretty crammed on Saturday as you wait for your food. I wish they would have a pager system of some sort as it would free up that space and there wouldn't be tons of people just hanging out. The food is pretty good, though, and people are always friendly! Between my family and I, we've tried plenty of items from the menu and we've liked everything. My Brisket miiiight have been a little dry, but it wouldn't stop my from ordering it again. It's a nice alternative to have a bbq spot close to home instead of hauling it out to purcellville for our usual spot. read more

I'll start with saying...I'm not even a fan of BBQ food. My wife loves it. My son loves it. I hate it. But this place? This place is freaking awesome. As a veteran myself, I love how they honor those who have served their country. I love how they play the National Anthem at noon. The last time I was there, they gave an announcement that one of the patron's currently eating, was a veteran of WWII, and encouraged other patrons to shake his hand. The look on the veteran's face was just awesome, when people lined up to shake his hand and thank him for his service. Just this alone would rate a 6-stars for me on Yelp. All that aside, I discovered that I also love their food! So we will continue to hit this place for chow whenever we can. Great job Mission BBQ! We love you guys. read more

Amazing service. I didn't realize but we walked in right at closing. The staff didn't even hint at the fact that it was closing time. Again I was clueless of hours... we just walked in. They took or out and made our food like it was opening time. It was delicious... after ordering they started to close down and that's when I realized it was closed. Was caving some awesome mac & cheese but didnt want to make it. This place is very close by so I decided to try it. Green beans were excellent. I also got cornbread, the mac & cheese and brisket. The brisket was also pretty darned good. Cornbread was cornbread. But I went for the mac & cheese. It was certainly good, but not creamy. I guess I prefer it to be not so dry. Staff was on point. I had my first meal at Mission BBQ.. tonight. The barbecue was mouthwatering delicious. The cheesy potatoes were scrumptious. And the apple cobbler was to die for. I am front Kansa and I have eaten Kansas City barbecue which is world famous and this barbecue is every bit as good. I also want recognize the staff who were super helpful and accommodating. I went back here 2nd time. The first time when it just opened, it was good. The 2nd time, I came in 8:30pm on Saturday, and I ordered exactly what I ordered for the first time: 3 Meat Samples with Mac & cheese and Fries. I told the cashier that I would dine in. A few minutes later, they gave carry- out box. The foods weren't good anymore. Ribs, chicken, and fries were pretty pretty salty without BbQ sauces. Ribs weren't fall off the bones. Brisket was dry. Growing up in Kansas City you get spoiled of having good bbq. Even thought the mission bbq owner is from Kansas City also but I am not impressed with food. My meat came out cold and also did not tasted as bbq but more like beef jerky. Not much to say but it seems like a good joint and I would not put them down for everything. Solid BBQ place. We stopped in for dinner this week. We ordered pulled pork (good), #41 sausage (great), turkey (good), brisket (a bit dry and light on the smoke), beans (great), coleslaw (good), fries (surprisingly solid), and mac and cheese (yum). And we tried all their sauces...we especially liked the KC, Smokey Mtn, and Texas. Service was friendly and efficient. The restaurant was busy, yet we didn't wait long to order, and our food came out quickly. Our only negative was the selection of beer on tap...a fruit flavored IPA, a wheat, and a dark...no middle of the road lager or ale for those who prefer a simple straightforward beer with their BBQ. But then, that's a pretty small gripe considering this place specializes in BBQ not beer. We will definitely go back. read more

It's been a long time since I had some good barbeque!!!! I highly suggest a pulled pork sandwich *NC style* (My Dad makes this back home its my fav, and yall nailed it!) The macaroni was delicious and so was the chicken, the turkey, the fries... Everything was so good! I sure wish I was able to try everything on the menu! (Maybe sometime I will!) Lol. I'm not a meat eater but my visiting brother loves BBQ so I thought we'd check this place out. I ordered the salmon which they had run out of. But, since I don't eat meat, they gave me a generous variety of non-meat sides to make it up to me which I thought was quite fair. But, then they went one step beyond and backed out the entire cost of my meal! I can't remember the last time I experienced such extraordinary customer service! I was stunned but the guy behind the counter simply said, "That's how we love on our customers." Wow! (BTW--The sides were all very good, especially the Mac and cheese.) read more

Mission BBQ is an okay smokehouse. Although I never expected it to be great, like places in Kansas City, MO, Austin, TX or Saint Louis, MO it was still just okay. The service wasn't bad, nor was I great. The service is very much like a Rudy's where you stand in line and get your food at the end of it. Focusing more on the actual food and sauces are important though. The chicken is served chopped and was cool. It wasn't served hot. There was no smoke taste or ring. Garlic and maybe some salt was used to season it. The moist brisket has plenty of fat and is moist. There was almost no smoke ring or a real smoke taste. They used oak wood to smoke which gives a very light flavor, unlike hickory or mesquite. The brisket has a very light salt, pepper and garlic taste. It was served cool as well. The green beans comes with bacon in them and they are probably the best side dish. The macaroni and cheese was gooey and delicious. The coleslaw is mayo based with a dash of vinegar and very bland. They probably don't let it sit overnight. The corn beard is slightly sweet. As for the sauces: Texas twang tastes like A1 Steak Sauce. Smoky Mountain tastes like Stubbs. Memphis Belle has a sweet vinegar taste. Tupelo Honey Heat is sweet and first and then turns on the heat. Bay-b-que tastes like old bay seasoning. KC Classic is tangy and tastes like orange peel. NC vinegar tastes just like malt vinegar with some garlic. It was a big let down. read more
