I love Mission Beach. We come here every year. So much to see and do here. Nice coffee shops and ice cream shops to cool you off. Beach is pretty clean and attractive to draw tourists here. Surfers come here too for the big waves. Mission Beach has bigger waves here than some of the other beaches I attend in Orange County back home. So, its a different kind of vibe here. I recommend people visiting here. read more

This was my first visit to Mission Beach, and overall it was a fantastic day. The biggest hurdle is definitely parking. We ended up at Bonita Cove, which had plenty of free spots, but it's a quarter-mile walk to the beach. If you don't snag a spot there, you're mostly left with street parking along Mission Blvd, which feels like a bit of a gamble. The area around Belmont Park was extremely crowded, so our group headed north to find some breathing room. That turned out to be the right move--we had plenty of space to set up and enjoy the beach without feeling packed in. The beach itself is clean, with trash cans spaced along the boardwalk. Alcohol and glass aren't allowed, which helps keep things orderly. Lifeguards were actively patrolling the shoreline, which added a nice sense of safety. There are tons of shops, bars, and places to grab food, and the boardwalk is perfect for people‑watching. It's got that lively, classic SoCal vibe. read more

Been here a handful of time over the years. Never wrote a review. Guess it's time. We parked across from the beach, over near the park. Place gets busy on the weekends and probably on holidays or whenever it's beach weather. What's nice is that it's free but better store up that patience or get there early. We arrived a little before sunset and it was packed. Walking along the shops and boardwalk, expect to see a little bit of everything. Tourists. Locals. Kids. Adults. Pets. You name it. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary but just know, it's a public beach so anything could happen. Beach is clean - or as clean as it's going to be when there's humans involved. Down no the south end of the boardwalk is an entertainment center with a roller coaster, games and shops. We didn't wander there as we were there to check out the sunset. At least I was. Took a few pics of the sunset (see attached) and then we continued walking along the boardwalk looking for a place to possibly eat. Anytime I get a chance for a beach it should be a 5 star. We had friends who stayed near by the beach so it was only less than a minute walk. So easy to find a spot. Parking is busy as always especially for July 4th weekend. Sand, ocean water, sunshine, around 75 degrees for the high, and life guards and police making sure the environment is safe. read more

I have been to Mission Beach a handful of times, and it is always a really fun place to spend the day. The water is cool and refreshing, with waves that are big enough to play in but usually calm enough for a safe swim. Right next to the sand is a long boardwalk packed with people walking, biking, and rollerblading. There are plenty of little shops and food stands just a few steps away from the ocean when you need a quick break. It can get pretty crowded, but that high energy is exactly what makes it such a classic California beach spot. read more

In June 2026, I walked by the Mission Beach boardwalk which is next to the Belmont Park roller coaster. It has a classic southern CA vibe with joggers, walkers, and roller skaters enjoying the cool breezes of the Pacific Ocean or watching the sunset. The boardwalk extends to the north all the way to La Jolla and has a pretty view. The beach seemed to be relatively clean, but it was quite crowded. Since I was staying at the Bahia Resort Hotel, I walked 10 minutes to see the Boardwalk. But it looks like a difficult place to find street parking. Overall, I would say it's worth visiting once - but if you're visiting San Diego as a tourist, it's not a "must do" sight. read more

I soent the best three years of my life in San Diego and Mission Beach is a big part of why I love this city. Free parking makes it easy and there's fun things and souvenir shops for the kids. Found myself in town and couldn't believe I didn't notice my layover would be six hours. Grabbed my niece, threw her in a rental car and we went to the beach. She brought bread from our brunch and crackers from the plane and the seagulls and pigeons ate out of her hand. I was also able to get shorts and flip flops at one of the shops for her which she loved so much, she wore them to school the next day so she could brag about going to the beach in SD. I enjoy going to this beach. It's pretty clean and has really cool rides and games for kids. It's actually a pretty good tourist attraction. The only negative is the beach being packed and the parking is horrendous. If you don't get here first thing in the morning. It is almost impossible to find parking. Sometimes I just don't even stay. I just drive away cause I search like 40 minutes. Other than that, the community is really cool to shop around in and I love the area. But that parking is horrible. read more

One of the most popular, but touristy beaches here in SD. Lots of crowds, even during the middle of the week during non-busy season. Occasionally you can find some peace and quiet, but don't count on it. Plenty of good waves for the surfers, and large swathes of sand for you to spread out and spend time w/ your friends/family. No alcohol or glass containers on the sand/beach, for obvious safety reasons. Parking is atrocious and incredibly difficult. Be prepared to park a bit farther away and walk-in. Lots of small hole in the wall shops for tacos and food/beer/drinks, but many of them are pretty non-descript and forgettable - most people don't come here for the food. This is a great beach and boardwalk that my wife and I enjoyed. First, It offers an amusement park with rollercoasters, rides and arcades. Secondly, the beach is clean and beautiful. It's a great place to hang out and go for a swim. Third, it has 3 miles worth of path for exploring and walking. Fourth, this beach has plenty of space for people interested in biking and/or skating. My family & I tried to enjoy this location but due to it was Saturday early afternoon it was very crowded & could not find parking anywhere. An amusement park is located across the street w/ paying for entrance, beach in the area, parking lots, parks, and a downtown area w/ restaurants as well. I always call San Diego my happy place, and Mission Beach never disappoints. We have never technically stayed beach front until this trip. We got some marine air on some days, but that didn't take away from the beauty. I still enjoyed every bit of it. Especially when you get to see the dolphins put on a free show for you. So epic! I love how close you are to cute little beach bars, shopping, people watching, restaurants, mini theme park. Just so much to do. We even got yo enjoy a farmers market that was near. This beach reminds me a bit of Venice Beach, but definitely cleaner. It is almost impossible to park here when we stopped by - everyone was either double parked or circling over and over again for parking. After circling about like 2 times around the whole block and at least 3 times in their main parking lot, we came around as a a car was leaving, so we were able to get parking. The beach and boardwalk was super crowded, so not as enjoyable. It was good to check out at least one time though. I actually imagined the boardwalk to be a bit bigger with more rides / shops though. read more

I used to frequent this gem back in the day when I worked for my Uncle at his car rental agency. I remembered it being so busy and clean. I visited yesterday and noticed nothing has changed aside for the ease of finding parking. There's still tons of beach sand and a handful of street performers. Lots of seagulls and rows of palm trees. The public restrooms are clean. The benches and picnic areas are too. There's a bit more graffiti that I remembered but it doesn't take away from the picturesque view of the ocean. With so much to see and do, it's an ideal place to sit back and relax. Whether you want to ride a bike, rollerblade or even paint - Mission Beach has it all and in one area. I plan to come back again and let my rascals roll around in the sand since it's December and the water might be a bit too chili for them to enjoy it. Mission Beach - It's Like Venice Beach, But With Better People and Fewer Weirdos. Believe Me. Folks, let me tell you--Mission Beach is tremendous. Absolutely one of the greatest beaches I've ever been to. You've got the beautiful ocean, the soft sand, the Boardwalk of Champions (that's what I call it), and some of the most patriotic beach volleyball players you've ever seen. These people were spiking for freedom. The Belmont Park roller coaster? Historic. Wooden. Like America used to be--strong, fast, a little loud, and still going after 100 years. I didn't ride it, of course (we don't mess up the hair), but I saluted it. Very presidential. Now let's talk about the people. Everyone's in shape. It's like Gold's Gym got sand dumped on it. Joggers, bikers, people on scooters--they're all smiling. Probably because they're at Mission Beach and not paying California income taxes, which I tried to fix, by the way! The food scene? Magnificent. Tacos that make you believe in miracles. Frozen bananas, smoothies, pizza slices the size of a campaign rally. And if you want a drink? You can sip a margarita with your toes in the sand while watching the sunset, which, by the way, looks like God painted it using only the best colors--gold, orange, and victory red. The vibe? Very pro-America. Very pro-fun. I even saw someone playing guitar on the beach singing "Sweet Home Alabama." In California! That's how you know Mission Beach is doing it right. Final thoughts: Mission Beach is everything the American Dream was supposed to be--sunny, sandy, and just a little bit loud. If I could build a Trump Tower here, I would. I never think to review beaches on Yelp but just in case someone else thinks to look for beach reviews on Yelp, here I am! I was recently on vacation to San Diego and had heard from someone local that mission beach wasn't a great spot for photography. Something in me needed to scratch the itch, so I drove out anyways and I am so glad I did! First of all, if you're looking for a beach with large rocks and a more PC wallpaper look you probably want to go to La Jolla. However - if you're looking for incredibly soft sand, volleyball, or the iconic boardwalk beach town vibes you definitely want to be at Mission Beach. I can see how this area would attract more tourists with an amusement park and several shops, but there was more than enough quiet boardwalk on the other end with beautiful beach houses, ocean, and the occasional biker or mom and kids. It was a dream to walk through at sunset and it was the only place I've ever been where I could genuinely see myself living happily. I will forever be envious of anyone with a home on mission beach! Is it the most lavish beach in SD? No. Is it the most charming? In my opinion - yes. I think it's adorable and I'll include pictures to prove it! read more

This beach is very popular, so expect crowds... even during the week. But even with the crowds there's enough space to setup shop & hang out for the day. We didn't get to go to the shops but there was a lot more to do if you didn't want to be on the beach all day. The water was warm so that was a plus! read more

DINGY BEACH w/ obnoxious beach goers and tourists. Mission Beach is mainly known for its amusement spot Belmont Park which is pretty good. However, the beach it's laid on is so dirty it broke my heart. The water was dark, like it's been polluted and no one was entering. The bathroom situation was absolutely horrific, dudes were leaving their boxer briefs in the stalls, toilets and urinals. I literally wanted to die. The toilets do NOT flush and nothing is ever cleaned. Mission Beach seemed like it's going for Venice Beach but much grimier. It's disappointing that the beach management and staff are not keeping an eye on anything. Even the lifeguards are goofing off. I found the stores and food lined up across the beach to be good, they get a recommendation! However, the rest of this beach needs help. Here's to hoping things change! read more

As many times as we've been here, I cannot believe I have not written a review! We truly enjoy the ocean and this area is one of our favorites. We enjoy our morning walks here. The view of the ocean helps us destress. We love the homes and condos here. Some are just ok, but then you'll see some unique ones with fantastic landscaping. Some homes decorate with pirates or surfing stuff. You'll see people biking or skating, too. Step out of their way. Once we tucker ourselves out, we usually stop at one of the local coffee shops. We'll pickup a coffee or a chai latte with pastries and sit down and enjoy the beautiful views of the ocean. It's so relaxing for us. It's also great to watch the surfers catch their waves! Sometimes the young college students will play volleyball and that's good entertainment as well. After that, we'll window shop and find a spot for breakfast or lunch with one of the local eateries. Overall, great place for people who enjoy the beach. There's a lifeguard station here. There's public restrooms available. Of course, the outdoor shower stations to wash off the sand. Parking? It's off street parking. We actually parked across the street in the residential area. read more

I've talked Mission Beach up a bit just because of the ones I like, they have the non-rickety Ferris wheel! Among many other things, but let's just be real, that's a pretty neat entrance to roll up to while you look for parking. Don't be me and not being tennis shoes, though. I had a great time visiting Mission Beach!! A very lively area with Belmont Park, the Boardwalk, and places to eat here along with all types of vendors selling all types of stuff, you can see it's easy to spend a day here. We walked along the Boardwalk for a while, it was hot, the beach had a fair amount of people. Running, bike riding and walking goes on here all day long. Kind of seemed like anything goes here also, seen some homeless people, burned out bonfires, people indulging if you know what I mean, but it's all good.
