Renamed in 1878, The Salvation Army opened its first U.S. branch in Pennsylvania two years later. During the Great Depression, it provided essential services, and it played significant roles in both world wars. Today, headquartered in London, it operates in over 130 countries, running evangelical centers, hospitals, rehabilitation programs, community and social work centers, secondhand stores, and more. Funding comes from voluntary contributions and publication sales.
