The Shifa Free Clinic is an amazing non-profit organization, started by Dr. Reshma Khan. It…read moreoriginated by a simple desire to assist those that didn't have access to healthcare. It has now become a full fledged clinic, with doctors from different specialties volunteering their time as well as full-time employees. The specialities one can be treated for- internal medicine, ob/gy, dermatology, pediatrics. There is now a dental unit. This is also a satellite location for The Lowcountry Food bank. There is a food pantry where families can register to pick up food once a month. Fresh express is held once every two months where local fresh produce is available for free. These events are held on a Saturday and there are normally a few hundred that come to pick up what might be the only fresh produce they might consume in the month. Local institutes support the clinic and provide a source of funding. Roper St. Francis is a sponsor and MUSC have incorporated the clinic as one of their training sites. The clinic is part of the PA program where PA's in training rotate through the clinic. It is also part of the MUSC nursing program. Internal medicine residency program use the clinic as one of their residency sites. There are also free clothing services available on site. This is one of the best charitable service centers there could be!

We were in Savannah for an industry conference and one of our activities was a charitable donation…read moreof time. A busload of us drove over to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Coastal Georgia for a volunteer activity. Our mission was to create weekend snack bags for school children of distressed families. The idea behind it was that when kids get school lunches, the school at least knows the kids get one good meal a day. But what exactly they ate over the weekend was unknown. So with that in mind, we divided our volunteers into three teams and set up an assembly line that stuffed zip lock bags with a fruit, canned chicken, a can of soup, a can of chili, a box of raisins, a bag of chips, a white milk, a chocolate milk, and 2 fruit bars. It was very inspirational to see our international collection of fellow volunteers working so hard, and cooperating as a team. Before we knew it, we had bagged 645 bags for the kids. What a wonderful and gratifying experience that was. In fact, we finished that task so quickly, we moved on to a second task -that of separating the countless bags and boxes of donated items into three categories- glass jars, cans, and soft goods. The Food Bank has quite a few volunteer opportunities, and I promise you that if you spend a few hours here, you'll walk out feeling a lot better about yourself than you did walking in.

Secondly, there were a total of 2 items I wanted to purchase, plant stand and 4 drawer wicker stand, which were both tagged as "Store Use". What kind of thrift store doesn't sell items? Needs items for "Store Use"? My friend wanted 2 pictures that were on top of a shelf which held hundreds of pictures, yet the 2 she wanted were "Store Use". Again, why not sell these and replace with the multitude available?! The store lost our money and we will not be back. Seems more like a Scam to us!
