Mississippi Mud Pottery has been around for 40 years. That is longer than most marriages in this day and age. When I shop here, I am not only supporting a local business, I am also supporting a local artist as well. That is a win-win. If any of you have shopped here and walked out without buying a single item, I want to know how you did it. I personally can always find an item or two to buy. I am either adding to my favorite pattern, Mixed Berry or I'm just buying a new random item that I just simply like. The quality of the handmade pottery is impressive and the prices are very reasonable. The staff gives a hippy vibe, which goes right along with the pottery/artist theme. Being a dog dad, I love that their show winning King Charles Spaniel, works the sales floor, like a true champion. When shopping on Broadway in downtown Alton, be sure to stop by Mississippi Mud Pottery. I just picked up yet another special request item from my favorite pottery store. Ive been shopping at this store for around 15years. The owner Chad used to let my kids play with clay and the pottery wheel when they were little. There's always a friendly dog in the store greeting customers. Any time I have an idea of something I can't find, I give them a call and they make whatever I dreamed up. This is such a special shop. I feel like family when I shop here. Minus one star because it's quite pricey....I guess I miss the days of getting to make pottery for free in my college's ceramics studio...but I digress. This place has a bunch of stuff, and not just your standard run of the mill bowls and plates that you expect from a ceramics store. They have this stuff, sure, but they have a ton of other really awesome stuff as well. Little figurines, things for your garden, things for gifts, they have it all. Not to mention other little home decor type things that are simply awesome. You can special order things if they don't have exactly what you are looking for, but I can only imagine what the price would be on that little adventure. Also, they have classes where you can learn to use the pottery wheel yourself...anyone who has ever seen Ghost has dreamed of doing this I am sure. Bonus, you can take home what you make. We went into this place a couple weeks ago. they had a wide variety of custom made pottery with various other items. There was a man and a woman actually making things when we walked in. They were friendly. they had a couple "house dogs" running around which were super friendly. This is a nice little store on the main drag in Alton. Most of the pieces here are pretty pedestrian from an artistic standpoint, but the designs are all fine and maybe being more toned down, they're less likely to become dated over time. The craftsmanship is excellent and prices are reasonable. Be sure and head upstairs to see some work from other artists. The quality of these pieces ranges from crappy to cheesy to pretty good. This is a nice wonderful pottery place. I have several pieces and go there often. Felica and Chad are the best! I recently went there and bought me three small crocks to make my mom's pumpkin bread in, for she always baked them in one pound coffee cans which are hard to find.(they also rust). This place is neato! They make everything that is there. You can even special order if you wish. But since you can do that they can get pricey. But its completely worth it. You'll want to go back and watch or even learn how to thrown pottery after you have been there! read more

We contacted Chad and Felicia to create a wholesale order for our local coffee shop- and they were FANTASTIC to work with. I've read a few reviews saying their prices are "expensive"- but think about what you are getting: - One of a kind pieces, made by the shop owners locally - All dishwasher safe - Beautiful and substantial It's worth the extra couple of bucks for a mug knowing that it is something you are going to use and love every day. I'd highly recommend buying their dish ware- it will stand up to the test of time! I've had one of their olive oil dispensers in my personal kitchen for the last two years and it has taken a beating daily. It's still as gorgeous and as wonderful to use as the day I purchased it. When visiting, the shop owners are always kind and go out of their way to answer your questions- not just about the pottery but about everything local. They are always positive. I also love visiting this place to find great gifts for Christmas. I bought a bull sculpture two years ago that was made by Felicia for my husband- he loved it! After a few months though, one of our cats knocked it off the shelf. Heartbroken, I took it back into the shop and she was able to repair it so beautifully- I couldn't even tell where it had cracked. I rate a pottery based on their ability to make a proper teapot. MMP teapots are exceptional. These teapots are both technically and artistically superior to any I have found elsewhere. Their teapot s are constructed so that the spout is "filtered" (look inside and see that their are small holes at the base of the spout to filter tea leaves so they do not end up in your teacup). This is an absolute necessity for tea purists who prepare their tea only from leaves. I visit this shop on a regular basis for the express purpose of adding to my teapot collection (resulting in a total kitchen remodel a year ago to contain them all) and am never disappointed. I always end up with an array of other pottery items as well. This place is a pottery junkie's dream! All of their items are thoughtfully designed for functionality as well as beauty. Considering the thought that goes into producing each piece, and the artistic beauty, I found the wares to be reasonably priced. My new kitchen doubles as a show piece for their beautiful wares that I use on a daily basis. read more
