So while New Orleans might get the majority of the attention around Mardi Gras, Mobile was the first place in America to ha e such a celebration. Joe Cain's grave is located in Mobile's historic Church Street Grave Yard, along with other city luminaries. This graveyard is a central location during the Mardi Gras celebration when the Merry Widows come to pay their respects at Joe Cain's grave. If you find yourself in Mobile, I would recommend a visit here. It is a cool old Cemetery that you can pay tribute to the man who brought one of America's most beloved celebrations to our shores.

Located in the parking lot for the Biloxi Lighthouse Pier, this marker recalls an important battle…read morein the fight for Civil Rights. The marker is accessible and in good condition. It reads, "Civil Rights Wade-Ins. On May 14, 1959, April 24, 1960, and June 23, 1963, the Biloxi beach front was the site of planned civil rights wade-ins demanding equal access to the public beach. On April 24, 1960, several citizens, both black and white, were injured and arrested, including the leader of the wade-ins, physician Dr. Gilbert R. Mason Sr. This series of protests gave birth to the Biloxi branch of the NAACP, major voter registration drives in 1960, and a 1968 falderal court ruling opening the beach to all citizens." Before the beaches were desegregated, adjacent homeowners claimed the beaches as private property. However, Mason and his supporters noted that the beaches had been built in a major project completed in 1953 by the Army Corps of Engineers using taxpayer funds, and so thought they should be public and available to all. The new beaches had increased tourist traffic to the Biloxi area, strengthening the local economy. The effort by local authorities to maintain segregation was supported by actions of the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission, a state agency founded in 1956. It used its extensive investigative powers to spy on citizens and plan economic retaliation against those who were civil rights activists or suspected of being so. On the date mentioned on the plaque, the police stood by and watched as white mobs attacked black beachgoers. It is referred to as "The Bloody Wade-In" and was described by the New York Times as "The worst racial riot in Mississippi history." One of the best places to visit during Christmas is in nearby Mobile County, Alabama, where they hosts "Magic Christmas in Lights" each year. Located on the grounds of "Bellingrath Gardens" it's one of the best Christmas light displays in the U.S. There is tons of info located in the lobby about all things Alabama. It's a great stop with a beautiful lobby with multiple Christmas trees for all your insta selfies & viewing pleasure. A beautiful large "park like" setting outside, with super clean restrooms inside. This is the Alabama Welcome Center along I-10 West. This welcome center is also called the Baldwin…read moreCounty Welcome Center. It is located just after entering the state from Florida. They are at mile marker 65.8, so in essence, we know that I-10 through Alabama is roughly 66 miles long. My visit here was on August 25, 2022. The weather on this day wasn't so good. It would be nothing but rain all day long. Making this stop at the welcome center was totally needed to get out of the car for a bit, as well as getting off the rainy roads. It was coming down pretty heavy at times. It was great to get inside, use the restroom, and just check things out on the inside of the building. Due to the rain, I didn't do anything outside there on that visit. Even though it was raining, they do have plenty of open outdoor space here. Although the visitor center is open from 8 am to 5 pm, restrooms and such are open 24 hours daily. The Alabama Welcome Centers have all been very welcoming. The inside of the building was really nice. Let's start with the restrooms. The restrooms were in great shape. They were well stocked and clean. The rest of the welcome center was nice too. Each area of inside was broken down into different parts of the state. They were broken up into the Highlands, Plantation, Wiregrass, and Gulf Coast regions. It was very well organized. When traveling along I-10 West, you will go through the Wiregrass and then the Gulf Coast sections of the state. Overall, this was a very nice welcome center, which is something I have always experienced for the ones in Alabama. Even in bad weather, it is still worth making the stop to come inside. You can get maps, construction info for the state, and more. The staff there were great as well. If your travels take you into Alabama along I-10 West, you should definitely make that stop here.

Seems to be more missing, but cant recall. So sad , and cant believe its been 20 years. If your traveling through biloxi , i highly recommend stopping by the monument and paying respects the souls loat and said their are still 3 ppl listed as missing even after 20 years.RIP.....

The storm was the twelfth tropical cyclone, the fifth hurricane, and the third major hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, as well as the fourth-most intense Atlantic hurricane on record to make landfall in the contiguous United States. Battered by wind, rain and storm surge, some beachfront neighborhoods were completely leveled. Preliminary estimates by Mississippi officials calculated that 90% of the structures within half a mile of the coastline were completely destroyed. The pictures of the coastal casinos - block long buildings! - were picked up and basically launched at the coastline, destroying many 18th century homes and ancient trees. The Bay St. Louis-Pass Christian and the Biloxi-Ocean Springs bridge were entirely destroyed. Katrina's surge was the most extensive, as well as the highest, in the documented history of the United States. That is documented here with a post showing the maximum height of the surge. The Memorial stands 12 feet tall, about the height of the water during Hurricane Katrina's storm surge at the Town Green. It lists the names of the 170 victims that perished during the storm. After staying here for a week, the staff is what makes this place memorable. They genuinely seem to enjoy what they do, and that positive attitude creates a welcoming atmosphere from the moment you arrive. When I first checked in, I was greeted and welcomed by multiple staff members. I chose this hotel because it is pet-friendly, has a laundry room, and is equipped with a modern gym. But everything about the hotel exceeded my expectations. First of all, the rooms are immaculate with new TVs that have a variety of channels, including HBO. I had a full-sized kitchen and enjoyed the handicapped-accessible room with a bathtub. The hotel is spotless and always being maintained by the staff. The grounds are also clean and inviting. The gym was perfect for helping me stay fit, and the laundry room made it easy to get a load of laundry done while I caught up on work. The wireless internet is also super fast, allowing me to stay connected with my work duties. It is the little conveniences like these that make an extended stay much more comfortable and stress-free. Overall, I loved Hyatt Studios, and I think this is a fantastic new concept from the Hyatt brand. I will definitely come back again.

There was also a nice male staff member who sang Happy Birthday to me which really made my day. We definitely will stay here again and I recommend it highly!
