Family Food Mart - Always clean and organized

My boyfriend asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day and the only thing I wanted was a trip to…read moreFamily food mart to stock up on my meat! I love it here! The meats are always fresh and I usually spend way too much even when I say "can we go to Family food mart? I promise I'm not gonna get a lot this time." I'm a weak, weak woman. This little meat market is always clean, well staffed, carries good quality meats, and the prices are great! . I remember when it wasn't as popular as it is now. I was surprised to see how busy it was today. It didn't take long though cause they had lots of meat guys working behind the counter. They have a lot of cool stuff too. I even got some of their famous aprons and a ball cap. You get to spin the wheel with every $300 purchase, so I got 2 spins and ended up getting even more stuff than I imagined. They also give scratchers I think for every 3 lbs of meat or per meat basket and you can win more free stuff. If you're into meat, like I am, and you're looking for a high quality and a good price meat market you need to make the drive out here. You won't be disappointed. They carry Harris ranch beef and even SRF (snake river farms)!!! The inside is poppin' with good music.

Saw a Faceybook post somewhere, talking about the quality of the meat at this market. So we drive…read morethe 30 minutes to Buttonwillow to try it out. Meat counter isn't too busy with 3 and occasionally 4 people behind the counter. Pretty soon it's just my wife and I. I thought it slightly amiss that not one meat counter employee even acknowledged us standing there...at any time. In walks a guy and immediately one of the employees serves him. The guy then looks at us standing there with no meat in our hands and asks if we'd placed our order yet. Not yet, we answer in a clear, slightly louder than normal voice. Still not even the slightest acknowledgement that we're even there from any of the employees. The guy apologizes and I respond with tutti a posto since I don't speak Spanish. You'd think that a business in Buttonwillow would appreciate customers driving all the way from Bakersfield to shop in their market. If you did, you'd be wrong. Fool me once...

Last time I was here though, I had an absolutely horrible experience that made me never want to go back. I don't remember what the cashier's name was but he was youngish (not as young as most of the baggers) skinny, had a beard and possibly blue eyes. I assume he's new because I have never been treated with so much disrespect from the cashier's here and hadn't seen him before. I came into the check out line with my friend who had a SEPARATE order (I had alcohol in my order) was preparing to take out my credit card and ID when the guy tells me he will needs both me AND my friend's ID in order to sell to me. Which is absolutely ridiculous and I have never been asked this before by cashier's here. My friend's product was just a burrito from the deli so she obviously didn't bring her ID for that. I confirmed that it didn't matter to him that all the items were for me and that I would be paying for them separately from her. Had to drive her back to her house to get her ID, came back and they had thrown away her burrito (after being gone for maybe 10 minutes max) even though they had promised to set it aside till we got back. This man tried to tell me it was so called long standing policy which is complete bs, if I had known his name I would have called and just straight up reported him to management. Put a giant bummer on my night for absolutely no reason, plus it's stupid how you gonna ask me to provide an ID for the person behind me in line? Yea we were talking but she literally could've been a complete stranger, so this guy wouldn't have sold me my products just cause I was talking to someone behind me??? Like what if she was actually a stranger, he's gonna expect me to ask her to get her ID just so I a complete stranger can buy my groceries? Make it make sense and train your workers better, even the baggers (who bring me my pick up orders regularly) knew this guy was in the wrong. And going so far as to throwing out my friend's burrito after not being gone for long at all (she literally lives three blocks from the store) then trying to offer to make another in 15 minutes while the store is closing? It shows me this guy didn't expect me to come back and was simply just trying to get rid of me and my friend, like I thought you guys wanted to sell this stuff? Seriously guys you can do better. Two stars are only for the products, and the one bagger who has always been kind and respectful when I pick up my orders, do better with your staff. I won't be coming back unless it's for a pick up order when every other place in town is out of what I want. Horrible

The person helping me at the deli counter was nice and that's kinda where it ended. While I was waiting for my strips and wedges order, I overheard an older man yell across the deli to a young man asking him to come to him. The older man then began scolding the young man, loudly, as I could hear him over the sounds of the deli and store traffic. He was scolding him for not telling him that he had gone on lunch? I understand maybe telling him once and to not do it again, but the older man kept on and on about it. It made me feel very uncomfortable and the girl preparing my order clearly looked uncomfortable as she kept looking back at what was going on. Very unprofessional. At check out, there were very long lines. Self serve was maybe 15 people long and normal lanes about 6 people. When it was my turn at the normal lane, the cashier looked visibly frustrated and speaking under her breath about someone coming to help. She said something like "now they help when the line died down". Also unprofessional. I'm in a beautiful city, doing what I love doing (camping), and I have this ugly and awkward experience. Employees acting this way in front of customers demonstrates what a toxic workplace environment looks like and I won't be giving them my business in the foreseeable future.

Kernville was wall-to-wall people everyone enjoying the Mountains, sunshine, Kern, river, and America's 250th birthday. James store was busy as might be expected on the big holiday weekend. I headed to the meat department too many choices. I decided on 2 habanero and 2 black pepper chicken kebabs to barbecue and a 6 pack of carnation drumsticks for dessert. The store looked great decorated and fully stocked they were ready for 4 July holiday. Shelly my cashier was super, all check stands were open very little waiting. Our barbecued kebabs Saturday night were delicious seasoned perfect and the marinade just right. The drumsticks hit the spot as well. Happy birthday America

Instead they tried forcing me to purchase the exact same bathing suit in a different t size. I have been a customer here on family vacation for 25 years. After this moment I will not support this business. I will be contacting the owner as she stated. Simple communication could have cleared this up from the beginning, and the managers approached has improvement for customer service skills.
