Not all Mr. Softee trucks in Brooklyn are the same. This is this truck's 25th year at the corner of Newkirk and Coney Island Avenues and Ali who drives the truck still only charges $2/cone for soft ice cream and $2.75 for two scoops of hard ice cream! Ali is known by hundreds of kids (and their parents) as the friendly man who does not raise his prices when everyone else does and who always has a kind word for each and every customer! Likewise unlike the unlicensed push carts that the city does not shut down, he keeps his truck spotless and is out on the street from early March through the first flakes of snow in the autumn. And for those who observe religious dietary laws, his soft ice cream is Kosher. In addition to soft ice cream and ice cream bars, he sells exceptionally good grape nut, strawberry, cookies and cream, rum raisin and pistachio hard ice cream and all sorts of ice cream bars. On a budget? He sells Marino Ices for the same price ($1) as the illegal unlicensed carts! In short, Ali may sell the same ice cream as the other Mr, Softee trucks, but what he gives in goodwill has no price!

When I do this; I usually find " buried restaurant treasure". On a recent visit to Prospect Park, I decided to try a different place and got off the B16 at Caton and Coney Island Avenue. The place: Lark Cafe. I was in a mood to cheat and have a toasted wheat bagel with scallion cream cheese and a Chai. I got almost everything, except, wheat was sold out and chose sesame bagel. As I waited, I wanted to check out the adjoining ice cream shop that sells Jane's ice cream, made in the heart of the Hudson Valley. I will return for a future cheat. Jane's is known for popular flavors as Killer Chocolate, Blue Zoo, Unicorn Cake. My order was ready and one bite of the bagel: heaven! The bagel was toasted to perfection and the scallion cc was delicious. And what a generous schmear! The Chai was light and frothy. As I devoured, patrons around me were typing on their computers enjoying Stumptown coffee and iced tea. LC offers a variety of tasty options: whitefish on a bagel, smoked salmon, cheddar chive biscuits, tea bread, croissants, doughnuts.. The ambience is relaxed and there is a book nook if you need a good read. Lark also hosts private events and for families there are sing along and story times. The service is kind and my bagel was absolutely made with TLC. I left Lark happy and walked straight to Prospect Park. Off the beaten path is always full of nice surprises! "We believe in the power of kindness and of little deeds that make a person's day. We believe in community and creativity. We believe in indulgence and enjoyment. We believe in relaxing and reviving. We believe in good business and good people."- Lark Take B16 Lefferts Garden Bound and get off on Caton Avenue and Coney Island Avenue, @5 minute walk.

I also got the kale salad & was pleasantly surprised with it- it is hard to make kale taste good but this place successfully managed to do so. The roasted chickpeas & feta was a nice touch. On top of that, the tahini dressing complemented it well. I'd definitely go to this place again.

I ended getting the large Italian ice which had three scoops for less than $5. Cee got the ice cream and loved it. They couldn't stop talking about how great the ice cream was. Unfortunately, the ice cream spot doesn't have any outdoor seating and it's more of a hole in the wall and can get very crowded easily. We will visit again if we are in the area.

Ice cream was $3.50/scoop (much more affordable than a Park Slope ice cream shop which cost $5.50/scoop the day before discovering Kathy's). The one scoop was more like a 2 scoop serving and was the perfect size. Undecided at first because they offered a handful of flavor combinations I hadn't seen before and wanted to try samples were provided. The teenage employee was courteous and worked swiftly. The place was busy and we did wait in line a good 15 minutes, it was clear a second employee was needed. The midnight caramel did not disappoint. Hubby got his standard cookies and cream and thought his was delicious as well. This is obviously a very popular spot with the residents of Windsor Terrace and a neighborhood gem. I can picture the line wrapping around the corner on a summer day.
