I was referred here from my dentist office because I needed an impacted wisdom tooth removed before my dentist could complete my crown. At first, I was skeptical about the fact the everything in the office looked old: the chairs in the waiting area, the office equipment, the oral Surgeon. But Dr. John Mitchelling was amazing! He was thorough with explaining how the extraction would go and what to expect. He and the office staff made me free comfortable during my surgery and at the follow up appointment. I was a patient if Dr Mitcherling's a few years ago when I urgently needed 2 teeth removed. I opted for IV sedation and was seen at a surgical center across from Kenilworth Mall in Towson. While I have no complaints about the actual removal, I ended up having a severe adverse reaction to the anesthetic they gave me. I went home feeling fine but over the course of the day my body felt awful and was kind of stiff feeling. The next morning I woke up and could barely move anything below the neck. I had to have my mother & my daughter pull me by my arms into a sitting position and then off the bed where I was bent over and I hobbled to the bathroom. I had to hold onto the door handle on the inside of the bathroom to help me off the toilet. It got way worse as the day progressed. Eventually I said there was no way anyone was going to wake up to help me do anything throughout the night. So we had to call an ambulance. I was diagnosed with rigidity due to the anesthetic and a genetic neuromuscular disease I have, CMT. I was warned to never undergo general sedation ever again. This is something the anesthesiologist should have known about and made changes to my care while I was under their care. I don't know if the anesthesiologist is someone who solely works for Dr Mitcherling or if she works for the surgical center. I had the rest of my teeth pulled with just local anesthetic and was fine. read more

So Dr. Mitcherling, oral surgeon, charged unnecessary consultation fees by delaying the service I needed immediately due to infection, so they could say they couldn't proceed immediately. They could have rendered service while on the first course of antibiotics from the general dentist and endodontist, but they made me wait till the infection recurred, and only scheduled consultation when I needed immediate extraction asap. So I was overprescribed antibiotics, and I could have died from sepsis if I had waited to be treated by them in September when they played the waiting game again for extracting the second molar. I went to another surgeon who had no problem proceeding immediately without consultation. It should be enough that I saw a general dentist and endodontist already who said extract the tooth! Beware. If they won't give you an immediate appointment for tooth extraction, go find another oral surgeon who will. This is bilking the customer at the least, and at the worst I could have died from withholding care. read more

What a nightmare. I had a broken and infected tooth and was referred to Mitcherling for an extraction and bone graft (wanted to get an implant). This office had my insurance information for 6 weeks and still couldn't figure out how to get the billing right. As a result, I showed up to the surgical center on the afternoon I was scheduled, having not eaten all day (can't eat before surgery) and in a great deal of pain, only to be told that "there was a problem with your insurance" and that they couldn't do the agreed upon procedure that day. The worst part is, they knew this weeks ahead of time, yet no one had the courtesy or professionalism to call and notify me of the problem. So fine, they reschedule for a week later, all will be worked out, you'll get everything you need. The second surgery day comes, I go in again... shocker - the billing problem STILL wasn't worked out. They could do the extraction, but still didn't have the billing for the bone graft (which would be fully covered by my insurance, had they got the code entered properly). They were like, "Oh you can pay the $2300 out of pocket and wait to get reimbursed." Not going to happen. So by this point I'm in such pain that I agreed to just go ahead with the extraction, and this unprofessional nincompoop (I'm talking about you Dr. Mitcherling) WAS AN HOUR LATE FOR A 9 AM SURGERY. I had to sit there, in great pain freezing my balls off in a backless hospital gown for an hour because he was too important to show up on time. Please, go ANYWHERE else. You'll be better off. read more

I had to have my wisdom extracted due to one being impacted Dr.Mitcherling is awesome in every way...thank you to the surgical team at Towson Surgical especially Nurse Mark for making sure the IV was placed without fishing in my hand. I feel 100% better no swelling, no pain.. read more

I took my daughter in to see Dr. Mitcherling last Saturday for a consultation. After being told we would be seen right away, then being told it was going to be 10 more minutes, and then finally being brought back, it was 45 minutes past the appointment time. Eventually we were told he was in emergency surgery and they had no idea when we would actually be seen. We were basically lied to as I am sure they knew he was in surgery! The days of allowing doctors to hold you hostage in their waiting room are over-there are too many options out there. I left the office and will never return. read more

This was my second worst dentist experience ever. That's really bad considering that he never even stuck his hand in my mouth. I phoned this dentist's office and told them I had a broken wisdom tooth that urgently needed to be removed. The jaw had swollen, and I was already on my second round of antibiotics. They said they could schedule me for the next week. I sent them my recent panoramic x-rays and they said that was all they would need. Naturally, I arrived with the expectation that the broken wisdom tooth would be removed. What I got instead was a lecture on why he should extract a total of 5 teeth, including all 4 wisdom teeth. When I said I only wanted to have 2 teeth removed (both broken), Dr. Mitcherling seemed to lose interest in me. If he was a cartoon, I'm sure that dollar signs would have faded from his eyes. They billed my insurance company $110 for the "consultation." However, it's predictable for oral surgeons to want to remove as many teeth as possible, so I got no value whatsoever from the lecture - which included senseless talk about how I could easily have gotten rid of those nasty wisdom teeth (which have served me extremely well over the years, thank you) as a teenager. Dr. Mitcherling didn't offer me another round of antibiotics, nor did he give me a quote on what it would cost to remove the teeth. (I asked about it, but he changed the subject)., It was just like, "Bye bye, we'll be in contact with your insurer!" As for the wisdom tooth, for which I was on antibiotics, Dr. Mitcherling simply told me that all broken teeth are infected. He didn't seem to realize that there are infections (not causing swelling or requiring antibiotics), and there are infections. So his office sent me away with no concern at all for the reason why I came in. They didn't even call me, as I had expected, to give me the price quote. They simply collected their $110 "time share presentation" fee (which they arguably should have paid me to sit through) and forgot about me and my broken, infected tooth. It's time for this greedy old man to retire. Please don't give him your business. read more

I had some really bad wisdom teeth that needed to be removed, on short notice because we were moving out of state. I also had an extreme fear of needles, which was relevant because there was to be IV sedation. They did a consult before and after, and the actual surgery was performed at the Towson Surgical Center, and everything was fantastic. The anesthesiologist at Towson Surgical Center recommended something re: the anxiety which this doctor had never done before, but Dr. Mitcherling was willing to try it, and my experience was better for it. They also waited until the last possible moment to do the IV stick and were extremely accommodating. I won't call surgery a pleasant experience, but they really did everything possible to make it as painless and tolerable an experience possible. They were also very clear about after-care instructions, and there have been no issues with the healing. Thank you very much, Dr. Mitcherling, Towson Surgical Center, and staff; I would highly recommend this surgeon. read more

The absolute most terrible doctor's office I have ever been to. The waiting area was stuffy and congested to begin with which although not good business practices, did not bother me much because my husband was there to get his teeth looked at not lounge around in the waiting area. After waiting for 1 hour I got up to ask the receptionist exactly where we were in line to see the doctor whch she hurridly told me 10 minutes without even getting up to check. I work in a surgeon's office and I understand that emergencies and unexpected things do occur at times in the OR that are beyond the doctor's control so I gave her alot longer than the ten minutes she tried to feed me. Well needless to say 2 hours was long enough to sit in the waiting area without even being notified of the delay. Im not asking for donuts and coffee to be brought out to me but a simple " The doctor has an emergency and will be approximiately X amount of minutes late" would have sufficed. When I brought it to the receptionist attention she was very rude and unapologetic about it. My husband came here once to get his tooth pulled in an emergency last year and needless to say we will NOT nor will we recommend this office to any others who may need an oral surgeon UNLESS they are just beyond desperate. read more
