Before I visited South Dakota, I made sure to find a local bookstore. Mitzi's was it. What a cozy space! A great selection of books, even for kids. And of course, other than books, a great bookstore should have wonderful book accessories like bookmarks, mugs, etc. and Mitzi's has that! I needed a book for my flight home and I found Country Place by Ann Petry. I am really enjoying it and I never would have discovered the author, if Mitzi's didn't exist. Also, nice service. What's not to love? It's a book store! If you're a book lover, this is the place for you. With the wooden carved staircase and upstairs it feels almost like your own personal library. There's a reverence and peacefulness perfect for browsing the books. So many titles and options! The children's section is like being in a Mother Goose fairy tale book! Has book specials at the front of the store from time to time, and wonderful gifts and toys for the book-lovers in your life. Lovely small book shop! Beautiful, unique and interesting books on display. Small collection, but found some good ones! Very covid-conscious. The clerk had me sign with a pen from a jar and then put it in another jar where all the "used" ones to be disinfected lived. Support your local independent bookstore! read more

After just 20 minutes in Mitzi's Books, it's clear to me that the store is a labor of love. I was charmed by its comfy, quiet interior and atmosphere. There's a great selection of books that's well-organized and has flare of character thanks to "staff picks." I was also amused and heart-warmed by a read aloud event for small children that Mitzi's was hosting while I was exploring the shop. Wow!! We visited Rapid City for the first time in a couple of years, and were DELIGHTED to find this place! It's literally the most beautiful bookstore I've ever been in, and the selection, for a small bookstore, is excellent. My husband was happy to sit in their comfy chairs, and admire their beautiful building, while I stocked us up with enough books to last a few months (or till the next time we get back to Rapid). FYI, they have some great non-book gift items as well, so I'm planning to cover most of our Christmas shopping, here.... read more

I visited the recently opened Mitzi's last night and was thoroughly impressed. The atmosphere was great with lots of families browsing the stacks, nice places to sit down and read a book, all with a very helpful staff. While this doesn't have the selection the Borders did, I prefer its intimate setting and the idea of supporting an independent bookstore! read more

I love how Mitzi's is set up. It has an old world, cozy feel to the store. The prices are comparable to anything else you'd find in another retail store. The only thing I have had issues with is the staff not making me feel at home. I felt like I was in someone else's home and touching their things. I peaked into Mitzi's while walking downtown square in Rapid city. What a delight, the store was so beautifully merchandised. There were custom creative chairs, displays, and all hand painted. Quaint little book shop in downtown Rapid. The staff is most the best from when Borders closed, aside from a few notable people who I miss from that place. They're always very friendly and helpful. This is THE book shop of Rapid, as far as I'm concerned. The only drawback: downtown parking can be hard to find! read more
