I was 48 years old. I had the B.S. degree, the CBEST, the Livescan, and the TB test, so I was ready to go! Most of my subbing was at Palm Crest. It's been so many years ago, but I have great memories. Wendy Sinnette was the Principal, as I recall. Some lovely and supportive teachers. Kelly Oh, 4th grade (I think). Lovely experiences here. Taught at Paradise Canyon many times, but I don't remember names. The kids were wonderful. I taught at La Canada HS and Middle School, too. Kathy Cockerill, 8th Grade English. I had her class for a few months. Can you imagine 8th graders who were supportive to a new teacher? They were. I spent several years in a charter school later on. That's a post for another time. Growing up as a queer and trans Jew, I developed a deep suspicion of rabbis after encountering too many who either outright rejected me or were uninterested in finding a space for me in the Jewish world. I met Rabbi Kerry nearly a decade ago at a tashlikh ritual at the beach. Kerry (still just a rabbinical student at the time) immediately put me at ease with her humor, warmth, and willingness to acknowledge the ways in which Jewish tradition can simultaneously bring our lives meaning while making us deeply uncomfortable. I loved that she didn't just seem to parrot the company line, so to speak-- she named the ways in which some texts had been used to justify oppression while also sharing the ways that she personally had adapted or modified rituals or texts to reflect the identities and attitudes she held dear. Years later, when my wife and I were planning our wedding, Rabbi Kerry was the obvious choice. We loved how she listened to our story and asked thoughtful questions to help us explore what pieces of the traditional Jewish wedding ceremony felt meaningful to us. She made sure that our ketubah (marriage contract) and ceremony were fully kosher, so to speak, while also helping us make the ceremony and contract our own. She ultimately crafted a beautiful unique ritual for our wedding in which our guests formed a web of blessings and community around us--truly a moment that elevated our experience beyond what we could have hoped for. Rabbi Kerry has been beside us for many highs and lows in the time since our wedding, including the recent adoption of our daughter. Again, Rabbi Kerry came through, organizing a mikvah (ritual bath) and conversion ceremony that helped us welcome our daughter to the Jewish people and reflect on the Jewish future we wanted for our family. We feel lucky to have Rabbi Kerry in our lives, and look forward to many milestones to come.
