There is a necessary push and pull (cosmically) where the more and trendy ambience-exuding a restaurant is--pure flavor is sacrificed. Case in chief: you know as well as I do that this cosmically determined phenomenon is most apparent in Tacos (the more rustic and rugged the joint, the more those Taco jointz are gonna be DA (you know what). Now back to our observee "Grand Palace." Its name is almost comically stereotyped. It sits on the corner of a shopping mall in a very blighted and impoverished area. On its Google photo, its "L" in "Grand Palace" is missing. I picture it flickering in the night like the kiss of that one that got away that time in undergrad. Walking in, it is dark--sweetly dark with flashes of red, and light dragon art centered as the steamy bar hisses a savory whisper that draws you in. The room and mixed scent signals almost hugs you a little too hard. Behold the juicy chicken on a stick that is purely fried (not red, not dry, not half-assed as usual). I am talking sweetly juicy. Colonel eat your heart out. Behold the seemingly mundane standard-issue broccoli and beef flanking General Tso and sweet/sour puffs with that red blessing handy and waiting for you like an overly eager date. Get all your normal extremely sweet meats as an adornment for the reason you are here (the rice and the three kinds of noodles). Cut that sugar with that blessed "spicy chicken" that lives up to its banal name and presentation. Onions and jalapenos (like notes from home on a sojourn) join on the sordid affair. They have "rib tips" floating in a red sea of sweet sauce. Oh, add these to whatever you've piled 7 miles high by now. They will be like midnight wine-stains on your dish. The evidence of the crime of pure passion. No sushi. This place is too true to form. It is too powerful in its own right to try to keep up with the economics the place finds itself (this vanquished little town). Pro-Tips: 1) Bring a $20 spot for lunch and that takes care of tip and all. While we were standing outside filling up our gas tanks, a deliciously, smoky scent wafted our way. When we finished gassing up, we actually followed the scent to the front door of Pappy's burgers and barbecue! There are a couple of things that I associate with good barbecue: for one, there's was this huge grill standing out just outside the front door. The SMELLS coming out of that thing were ridiculous! It made our mouths water! Since the grill was closed, I couldn't see was actually cooking inside of it so I hurried inside to get a view of what we might be potentially eating. We were not disappointed! The ribs and brisket on customer's plates look amazing! They were large cuts of brisket, (including the fatty side, which I personally LOVE), and the ribs were thick and meaty! We were ready to order and dig in but then we were told they were out of brisket and that the ribs were gonna take another hour to an hour and a half to fully cook they had sold out twice already! Mr. Bobby likes the meat to be ready to fall off the bone before offering it his customers. We tried to get him to pull the ribs early since they were cooked and we informed him that we were had been driving for over eight hours and were just passing through. We still had another 4 hours to drive at that point. He apologized, but insisted that the ribs wouldn't be ready for another hour and a half because they had to soak. We had a decision to make: did we simply move on and head home or wait an hour and a half for what we were hoping would be a delicious and rewarding experience? We decided to wait even if it meant that we were gonna be getting into New Orleans at night. We gambled, and decided to stay. Boy, am I GLAD we made that decision! During our hour and a half wait we met the owners of the establishment Mr. Bobby and his wife Mikki...(sorry Miss Mikki if I'm spelling your name wrong)! We also met many of the other staff members, as well as their grandson who was a kick! They were all the nicest people, and Mr. Bobby explained his process or (at least some of it), about what makes his food so great! it was a fascinating conversation! To put delight, they had smoked wings available, so we ordered a tray of six and shortly afterwards another tray of 10! They were so very good and moist! Meat falling off the bone indeed! For the record, I don't really like chickens drumettes. They tend to be a little dry for me. Can I tell you that I devoured seven of them and didn't look back? Even though we had to wait time passed rather quickly because the whole group were entertaining and fun to talk to! After eating the chicken wings, we were fillec with even more anticipation for the ribs. Mr. Bobby was completely out of brisket, but believe me, we will get it the next time we go! He also offers three barbecue sauces, all of which were very good, including the mustard one which I generally don't like. You could easily tell they were homemade, though he told us about some gentleman on Google review named Tim that tried to insinuate that the sauces were out of a bottle. I don't know where Tim is from but he has no clue what a homemade barbecue sauce taste like, apparently. Tim, you SERIOUSLY MISSED THE BOAT, BUDDY! if, for some all godly reason, you didn't like his food that's you're right, but to insinuate that the man didn't make his own sauce is just downright disrespectful! (and it shows a serious like a knowledge on your part). Anyway, the ribs delivered! They were moist and meaty, and the flavor was fantastic! They were full of smoke, and yet there was a sweetness about them at the same time. I don't know how to describe it; I just know I ate it all! Because we're were waiting for so long Mr. Bobby sent us home with some free drinks and some more of those dang wings! I think the only way they made it home was because we were both so stuffed from our meals. My grown children DEVOURED them once we got home! It's a four hour drive from Granada to New Orleans, but we are already planning to come back with our kids and some of their friends. This is one of a few places that I would make that 4 hour drive for. If you live in Granada, don't sleep on them! Thank God I don't, I'd be broke every month! I had 2 pounds of crawfish that had been in the cooler so they weren't hot temperature wise and I thought the spice was a little on the weak side for me personally, I think in my opinion, they could've boiled about another five minutes in the pot. All in all everything was Great. The ambiance is terrific as was the service. After three weeks being in Grenada, Mississippi by far this is the best meal I have had. I will be going back for more. I got a wrap because I planned to eat it in my car, but it was messy. The chipotle sauce was dripping everywhere. The wrap didn't seem to have been rolled tight enough. It was a decent size wrap though. The only real off putting thing was the bacon is that "real bacon" bits from a bag. I was disappointed it wasn't freshly chopped bacon. Would have made the wrap even better, but instead it had too much salty flavor. So beware of you get something with bacon in it. The potato salad was pretty good with the flavors though. I prefer skin off the potatoes, but to each their own. I'll be back to try some other items next time I'm in town.
