This company installed a retaining wall and sections of 6- and 4-foot white vinyl fencing for me as well as two gates. Overall I was very pleased with the process from my initial outreach to the quoting process to the actual work itself. The best part was I had been having trouble getting one company that would do both the wall and the fence and these guys did it no problem. So it's no secret that MJ Nichols is the higher priced crew around the area. That being said, they are definitely worth the money. They don't send out 1-2 guys to do your lawn, they send out a crew of 3-4, so one is cutting grass, 2-3 others cleaning up the grounds and edging. We had to recently re-mulch our entire property and they much of had 12 crew out here. And the kicker - it's started to rain for an hour. They hung out, ate lunch and waited out the storm and continued working as soon as it passed. I was impressed! We will stick with them for this year and see how it goes.thr one negative I would say is that they don't keep the lawn mower blades sharp. Everytime they cut, there is a little brown hue left over. Usually due to dull blades. But they are generally great, you get what you pay for. read more

The crew at MJ Nicholls did a fantastic job installing a patio and small fence for us! The patio is quite large, using pavers. They did a beautiful job with the installation and turning our backyard into our dream space. Due to neighbors having fences, we only needed on side to be fenced off to make the backyard secure for our dog. I had my lawn leveled and hydro seeded last summer with this company - spent over 3k. my husband and I followed the instructions exactly regarding watering, etc. and our grass never fully grew back. over the fall and winter we noticed, an unusual amount of puddles in the middle of our yard. Finally, this late winter almost spring, we brought in two other contractors for a second opinion, and were told that this company that did our landscaping used pebble, fill topsoil and overpacked it so it was no wonder grass could not grow. Unfortunate. When I share this issue with them, I was told that we only have a 30 day guarantee after the topsoil is put down which seems crazy since it takes longer than that for grass to grow. But they were willing to Hydro seed again for a lower rate. No thank you. read more

Our abutting neighbors hired Nicholls Landscaping to put up a fence. When the company ran into an issue, one of the workers asked if they could put up a small wall on our side to support the fence. In good faith, we agreed. Unfortunately, rather than building a small wall, they instead nailed boulders of wood into the ground exposed only on our side of the fence. As you can see in the pictures, they didn't even remove the blocks of cement from the old fence. The eye sore left in our yard is evidence that Nicholls Landscaping is unprofessional and has no regard for the neighbors of their clients. read more

We just completed a large backyard renovation/landscaping project with Matt and his team. Excavated the yard, added a large retaining wall, all new landscaping. They were great. SO fast (total project completed in just over a week). The guys were extremely hard working-- it was a complex project in a raised yard and they were hustling all day (rain or shine) to get the project done. It looks amazing-- better than I could have imagined. Matt was extremely responsive as questions came up and any "issues" were addressed in a timely manner. The storm on March 13th destroyed the retaining wall and a good part of my property. I contacted Mike and he came right down to survey the damage. He cleaned up the area the next day to make it safer while we worked on a plan to rebuild. Since he had done the work originally I preferred to have him do the rebuilding. These guys are great. On time, fast working (less than 4 hrs)and very little disturbance to our lawn. When there was a problem with one of the heads, our technician came immediately and made the adjustment without issue. Highly! Recommend!! He planted a tree in a row of existing Arborvitae to replace a dead one - and didn't bother to line it up with all of the others. This one sticks out like a sore thumb from the rest of the perfectly aligned batch o' trees. It drives me crazy and I'll be stuck with it for life. Shoddy workmanship. Wouldn't hire again. Overall fairly good work - bit disappointed w the stonework at some points. Price was good. Biggest problem was working with Mike - he was responsive and helpful, but at every step of the project something went wrong, mostly because he forgot or didn't realize what I wanted. The blueprint plans were rushed and late; the wrong plants went in then came out; the stonework estimate was half of the final invoice; the rounded pattern was not followed 100% (and now looks kind of wavy - again, not consistent with the blueprint). He was prompt at correcting these issues (except for the latter), but they never should have been issues to begin with. Bottom line: they do good work, and they do it well. Maybe this is my fault, but you should definitely have a list of all the things you want done (to the smallest detail) prior to getting an estimate. read more

Matt and team did a great job on our recent backyard project. We wanted to take down some fencing, rip up a section of asphalt, have loam brought in and leveled. My husband is handy but didn't want to tackle this job by himself. We emailed Matt for a quote on his website and he responded that same day. We made an appointment, he showed up exactly as planned and gave us a quote that night. Better still, we were undecided on how to use this new space. He quoted us two options, fully understanding our goals and limitations. His price was very fair for the work. He scheduled a date for the work to be completed and showed up on that exact day. He was right on time and we went over the project once more before his crew had at it. The crew was very good too. A couple of times they asked my husband for his opinion on their work and were more than willing to accommodate some of his requests. They wanted to make sure the job was done exactly right. It looks great, they left my yard and driveway in very neat condition, making sure everything was picked up and disposed of properly. Overall, a very professional experience. I met with MJ Nicholls to discuss a backyard renovation. They were very knowledgeable and had some great ideas for what we could do with my relatively small space. The end result was a complete rehab including removal of a tree, demolition of some old asphalt, regrading the yard, installing a patio with pavers, adding granite steps, and hydro-seeding the lawn. Matt and crew did an excellent job on our patio. Responded quickly for a request for a quote, (most don't, that's usually a battle in itself these days, not matter the size of the job). I asked how long it would take and he said 5 days, it was done in 5 days. Any problems that happened, he fixed the issue immediately and did NOT make a B.F.D. about it. A piece of his equipment broke, I new one came immediately, the irrigation system was dug up, he came and he fixed it immediately, the grass seed was washed away in a huge rain storm before it set, he came and did it again, without hesitation. Hands down best landscaping company I've ever worked with!! We bought a house in November 2017 which the landscaping had been severely neglected. We spent 12 hours a day every weekend this past summer trying to clean it up. As soon as we would get a tiny section done, 15 new plants/weeds had grown in its place. We called numerous landscaping companies to get us an estimate to rip it all out and start over new. Not one company would either return our calls or come out. I turned to yelp and found this company. Matt got back to be right away about setting up an appointment for a quote. The day we scheduled, about 15 minutes before he showed, the sky opened up and a big old storm rolled in. I expected that he would call and reschedule but he showed up anyways, looked at the front, sides, and sides of our driveways in the rain. Got back to us the next day with a quote and we scheduled for the first available. A crew of three guys showed up on 10/8 at 7am and immediately got to work. They worked straight through until 5:30pm. My house is literally unrecognizable!! They worked so diligently and I couldn't have ever expected the result to look like this! I'm beyond ecstatic that we found such an amazing company. 1 day in and everyone in our small town has stopped to compliment us on how sensational our house and property look. Nicholls' landscaping removed a chain lint fence with great care to not disrupt a gas line that goes from the street to the house, and to protect our driveway. Nicholls' had all of the equipment needed for such a big job- bob cat, dumpster and so on. The next day they trimmed all our overgrown bushes in the front of the house, weeded, edged and mulched. This area was a jungle and now it looks beautiful. I think the value of my house was improved by thousands of dollars from the work Nicholls' did. The cherry on the top was a small pile of leaves had been left behind accidentally, but at some point in the day someone from the company came back and removed the leaves!!!! We wanted to convert a poor looking plot into a patio area. Got a nice design including large tile slabs, gravel, grass, flowering plants, shrubs. Several thousand $$. This was a lot of work as the whole plot needed to be dug up, leveled, layered with different soils, then finished off with the tiles, grass, plants. Everything was fine except the plants. Half of them looked dead when planted in the late fall, and those didn't come back in the spring. Mike came out in June, said the plants were under warranty and would be replaced. Came out again in the fall, said the same thing. Despite repeated emails and phone calls those dead plants never did get replaced. I'm out several hundred dollars for plants for no reason since they were under warranty; Nicholls just couldn't be bothered to make good on the contract. Will not use them again. read more

Each time they have been an absolute nightmare to get ahold of and has taken weeks for them to return.
