We arrived early and found parking near the children's playground area, and walked out onto the white sand beach with only a few other AM visitors. We did not utilize or investigate what looked like umbrellas and beach chairs for rent, and instead waded out into the bathtub temperature water with our masks and snorkels. The swim area stays shallow farther than we SoCal folks are used to in our beaches, and it is roughly enclosed by a break wall of sorts, and a long walking pier with stairs down into the water for access. Still plenty of small snapper, grouper, and other fish can be seen out near the structure of the pier and break wall. After a warm morning in the water, we left our towels on the beach and enjoyed a delicious lunch at Salute (see other review) before packing up and exploring the other great parts of Key West. We found this beach to be cleaner than Smathers beach, and maybe more laid back. Also of note: there was a marked sea turtle nest on the beach surrounded by caution tape and signage. Yet another wonder of the keys for us touristy visitors who live in Sunny SoCal with her cold California current ocean temps.

The Key West Aquarium is probably one of the smallest aquariums I have ever been to, so if you're…read moreexpecting something massive, where you can wander for half the day, adjust your expectations. That said, we had a really nice time here. It has a small intimate feel so you are close to the tanks and you can take your time. We came later in the day and we were able to catch the game fish and shark feeding. The tank itself was pretty dark and it was honestly hard to see much happening in the water, but the staff member giving the talk was engaging and informative. We learned a lot especially about mangroves and how important they are to the ecosystem. We also stayed for most of the touch tank tuck in tour which I found to be surprisingly sweet. They secure the animals before closing to ensure everyone is safe and protected while the staff is not on site. They also encourage audience participation and there was only one child there at the time I was present, but she really seemed to enjoy helping put the animals away. It was very cute and the staff was very kind to her and made sure she understood what was going on. All the staff were very knowledgeable and genuinely friendly and you could tell they care about what they do. I personally liked seeing the clownfish and learning about them, but my favorite was probably the queen triggerfish. She was beautiful and full of personality. There was also a large tortoise which my husband really enjoyed watching swim around the large tank. The aquarium is dog friendly and since we were traveling through the area we probably would not have come otherwise. I love dog friendly activities and I always give extra stars just for that. Our pup was safe and felt curious and it was enjoyable for her too. They also have a little kiosk where you can take a free digital souvenir photo so I snapped one of us with our dog. It's a small touch but all the patrons loved it. I did read a lot of reviews before coming that made it seem like the price of admission was not worth it because the aquarium is small. I live near the Monterey Bay aquarium and have visited it many times. It's one of the best aquariums in the world and you can spend hours inside, but it costs $65 per person. The key West aquarium cost us around $20 and I doubt many people spend more than an hour - 90 minutes here but I think if you put it into perspective the price is absolutely reasonable. There was a lot of empty space and spots under construction, which is understandable but makes more of an impact when the aquarium itself is so small. Overall, this is a quick educational, easy stop in Key West and we are definitely glad we visited.

Such a cute aquarium! The first open-air one in Florida!…read more Sharks, tarpon, turtles, rays, fish - including the invasive lion fish (one of over 150 invasive species in the state). We loved that we could feed the fish for free (with entry). We loved hearing stories of the rescued turtle residents. We loved how small and cozy the space is. The employees and marine caretakers are very knowledgeable, kind, and truly care for the creatures in their care.

My wife and I have been on group paddleboard tours and we've been paddleboarding where you're just sent out on your own for a certain amount of time, but we've never had a guided tour like this. It was cool because we'd never been to Key West, while our guide knew the lay of the land like it was her own backyard. She gave us a path and a purpose, which I really liked. When we go out on our own, we tend to just aimlessly wander, but that definitely did not happen here! Not only did we have a path, but we were educated about different things along the way, and just about life in Key West, in general. Because I'm a terrible person, I don't remember our guide's name, but she was awesome! The only issue I had was getting our trip booked. I actually purchased the Yelp deal, which saved us some money, but I didn't want to end up booking online because I'd already paid for the Yelp deal. I kept calling them over and over again, but never heard back from anyone after leaving messages. Finally, the morning we planned on arriving, we called and someone actually answered the phone. He was woken up by the call being forwarded to his phone and sounded frazzled. He said he'd been working at a bar until the early hours of the morning and that his partner was supposed to have answered the phone. Regardless of that weirrdness, he quickly called around and got us a guide before calling me back to let me know when to show up - which was ASAP. It definitely wasn't the most conventional way to book an appointment, but we made it and really enjoyed it!

Such a unique Key West experience that I won't soon forget!…read more I've been paddle boarding numerous times but never on an organized tour. After reading a bit more info on this biz's site, we decided to take an afternoon tour which started at 1:30. SUP Key West also offers morning and sunset tours, but this ended up being perfect timing for us - we could sleep in and let brunch digest before hitting the water. Now, for the tour. Our guides name was Brian, the owner of SUP Key West. Booking online was a breeze and $45 per person. Once we arrived, we met the other two in our group, grabbed some life jackets (optional to wear but must be on the board) and took to the water. I love being active but wouldn't consider myself "outdoorsy." That being said, I don't know too much about the mangroves or the ecosystem surrounding the Keys so this whole experience was really eyeopening. While we drifted through the mangroves, Brian talked about how they were formed, gave more info on the birds we spotted and pointed out the sea life, even picking up and passing around sea cucumbers, jellyfish, sea stars and algae. To top it all off? We saw a nurse shark! His enthusiasm for the environment was contagious and had me eager to learn more. About halfway through, he asked if we had immediate plans and since we didn't, we took the long way home so the tour actually lasted a little over two hours. It wasn't a huge workout until the very end when we were battling some winter wind. By the end of it, I was exhausted. Brian brought along a cooler of water which was nice in case you need some hydration along the way. All in all, a different activity to do while in Key West. This was my boyfriend's first time paddle boarding and left a great impression so hopefully I can get him on the water a little bit closer to home next time. Whether a local or a tourist, I'd say it's definitely worth taking part in.

We rented Molly (21ft Switch) for one day and we had a blast! These boats are so much fun and great for the keys! We received an email the day before letting us know Molly would be ready the next day and also where to park, temperature, wind and seas information which was great and super helpful! Getting to the dock was easy, Thomas and Maryanne were there to greet us and help us with our bags which was wonderful. Thomas went over a little safety briefing and how everything works on the switch. We were thankful for a cooler with ice and a few drinks, as we forgot to buy ice for our cooler so that was great! After a few minutes, we were on our way! Returning back, Thomas and Maryanne were there to greet us again at the dock and help us offload our stuff. Everything ran smoothly and so easy and they were both so lovely to us! All in all, we had a great time and couldn't be happy with the service we received from Sandbarjetboats. We will definitely be back and rent from them again (if my husband doesn't buy his own switch! Haha). But we were very happy and HIGHLY RECOMMEND them! 5 stars all the way!

We got at the dock 30 min ahead of schedule and the boat was already ready and cooler stocked with ice for us. We got to the Florida Keys just two days before Hurricane Idalia decided to show up and the owner was more than willing to accommodate our reservation date. We had the "Big Mike" switch for the day and it was amazing on gas, plenty of space for all 6 of us. I would highly recommend Sandbarjetboats to anyone wanting to rent a boat and be their own captain.
