On vacation and was craving Peruvian chicken. This place has decent reviews. It's very clean, staff is pleasant and plenty of seating. We ordered a whole chicken with 3 sides( yucca, Cole slaw, salad) as well as black beans w/ rice. The food came out hot and looked amazing. The chicken left little to be desired. Not seasoned well at all. The sides were good though. I'll come back and try other menu items, just not the chicken. read more

Calabash is known for seafood, but some of us frequent visitors like having other options! The restaurant is a no-frills eat-in or take-out place, great for tourists grabbing something to eat on their way back from the beach or anyone who wants some good rotisserie chicken. The line was semi-long but moved fast. Parks outside were scarce and someone was waiting for me to move when I left with my takeout (usually a sign that a place has good food). As for the food, the rotisserie chicken was very juicy and flavorful; it passed my eighty year old mom's taste test. The rice and beans were okay. If I visit again, I'd like to try the tres leches (which was sold out when I was there) and some of the other sides. read more

The food never disappoints. It is always full of fresh flavor and is a favorite of our family, even though it is not near our home or work. For years, we have been going out of our way to dine here 8-12 times per year. Today I have to share my experience to recognize the exceptional PEOPLE. For the first time ever we ordered takeaway. As we began dinner at home we realized one of the three dinners was missing. We called the restaurant and they confirmed part of our order was still there, due to a distraction behind the counter they did not hand us the second bag & we did not look in the bag before departing. When the error was discovered the owner did not hesitate to asked for our address, and took the time to drive one dinner 20 minutes to correct the error. He was kind and apologized for the mistake. I cannot express how his act of kindness touched me during such a challenging time. What the person on the phone did not know is that we ordered take out from Mmm Que Rico because we could not face sitting in a restaurant but really needed a home cooked meal. Our father, a regular over the years at Mmm Que Rico, was admitted into a long term care facility. For 13 days our family spent all day and night in the ICU then the nursing home getting him settled. We drove 30 minutes out of way to treat ourselves to a dinner from Mmm Que Rico. I nearly cried when I got home to find only my dinner was missing. I could not believe that anyone would take the time to drive one meal 20 minutes and politely say 'it was our mistake, we wanted to make it right.' At a very difficult time for our family this small act of courtesy meant the world and won the loyalty and praise of our family for as long as we continue to live in the area. This place has gone downhill. It used to be great. The empanadas are much smaller, they used to have nice flaky crust. These were soggy. And they gave me a verde , green sauce that was salty it could wilt a cactus. Maybe I came on a off day, however I won't be back. read more

Sometimes you just want some good roast chicken. Or if you're like me, that sometimes is all-the-time. In this case we crossed state lines just to have the Peruvian version (one of the better versions from my perspective). It didn't disssapoint either. The chicken was perfectly cooked and delicious. As usual this establishment doesn't disappoint. I had lunch here once again this week and I understand why Yelp rated them #28 in the country amongst Mexican Restaurants. My girlfriend loves their chicken quesadilla so that is what she had. I had the beef tacos which were new to me. The meat in the taco marinade and seasoning are so great. The owner spent time talking to us as he always does. I also love talking with his wife. They take great care in making sure their customer's love the food. This is my second favorite restaurant in Calabash and it should be yours too. Do not go in thinking that this is your Americanized chips and salsa Mexican place. This is South America at it's finest. If it is your first time the only thing you need to try is the rotisserie chicken and sides. Lunch time might be difficult because they are so busy. I was wandering around Calabash and wanted something not fried which is unusual because I can't remember a time wandering around Calabash where I didn't eat something fried. I bumped into MMM Que Rico when I tried to turn around in the Creamery parking lot and got distracted by the signage. Empanadas you say? Heh. I bossa nova-ed myself right through the front door, humming The Girl From Impanema, where a woman kindly walked me through what I needed to know to order food. I ordered too much, but I always do. The 1/4 rotisserie chicken would have been plenty since I was getting emapnadas too, but I went with the 1/2 because leftover chicken is a priceless commodity--a little microwaving to keep the juice and its the king of the next day. I asked for the 3 different sauces for the chicken--mild, medium, hot--and here is what I'm going to do the next time I visit: Ask for the hotter sauce to be mixed with the mayonnaisey based mild sauce. In effect, it will be a green mayonnaise with kick. Heck, I won't even ask. I'll just do it myself. If you don't dip your chicken in the sauces or slather the sauces (any of them) on your chicken, you will be making a serious mistake. The skin is crispy, the meat is juicy and well, que rico. The empanadas (chicken and beef) were crispy, meaty, and to be honest, worth another drive from North Myrtle Beach to get them again. I like good surprises and this little tucked away empanada palace was a good surprise. I'm going to need more of that empanada dipping sauce. The owner stopped by and I appreciated his interest in my satisfaction. I'm thinking he probably hums The Girl From Impanema from time to time too. read more
