Care for family member with cancer.... A few nurses and assistants were very good. Majority were very poor. Communication among team members awful. Some outright lied to avoid work. Room dirty most of time. Workers left dirty linen on floor for hours until I kicked it into doorway. Medical equipment such as tape and pill cutters dropped on floor and left for days...what does housekeeping do ? Pain meds often an hour late for terminal patient with great amount of pain. Social worker excellent. She was the only person who could be consistently counted on to get anything addresses. read more

My Mom was admitted on 11/10/24 with heart issues. Every single person that had hands on her, from environmental services to the Physicians were without a doubt the best that I have ever encountered. Details matter in healthcare, and this place misses and misses. This picture of the bathroom, while seemingly innocent, is indicative of a lack of attention to details and a lack of accountability. Based on my observations around 5 days here, this highlights an hospital with suspect hygienic practices. The staff here, for the most part have been friendly, but I wouldn't say overly helpful. And some have been downright pleasant. But, I'm still fearful for my loved one who is under care here and would never recommend this hospital to anyone. read more

I've had numerous experiences with loved ones being hospitalized in various facilities: Singing River, Providence, Springhill Memorial, USA, and now Mobile Infirmary. None of the experiences were "perfect". Some (hopefully minor) mistakes and rough spots are inevitable. These can be tolerated and easily forgiven as long as the big picture, the health, safety, comfort, and dignity of the patient, remains the focus. This is the first time I have felt compelled to share an experience. My friend just had surgery at Mobile Infirmary. I was with him the day of the surgery and for his 5 days of hospitalization on the fifth floor. More specifically, in the low 5600s. I have come to realize that Mobile Infirmary is truly a hospital of great expectations. Not so much great as in wonderful. Great as in numerous. If you are a prospective patient, be forewarned. * Expect to have to ask for everything you need. Expect to have to ask again. And, more often than not, again. * Expect to have a long-term relationship with the linens on your bed and pillows. They will never leave you. Ever. * Expect that used towels and gowns will remain for several shifts in a heap where the staff dropped them. But that's only if you are lucky enough that someone helps you bathe. Unless you are prepared to be assertive, never mind about this one. * Expect to overhear numerous staff conversations about understaffing, faulty medical equipment, and the lack of wheelchairs. * Expect to also hear those same conversations firsthand. After all, that's the excuse for the first 4 expectations. * Expect to be treated with distain to your face by some staff. Others may prefer talking about you outside your door. * Expect to be treated like the annoyance you apparently are. Sick people are just SO NEEDY! * Expect that if you mess up by slipping off the side of your bed, the charge nurse's first reaction will be, "NOW YOU'VE CAUSED US A LOT OF EXTRA WORK!" Were you expecting she would say something more solicitous like, "Are you hurt?" Then I expect you aren't paying attention. Try to focus. Remember, this is not about you. * Expect that the very small, computer-monitor-sized screen on the wall is a TV and the large screen that you'd hoped was the TV is filled with a bunch of useless information that might be randomly updated, but seems largely ignored. * Expect that your room is dingy and depressing; and that the furniture appears to have been arranged by an earthquake. * Expect it to "sanitized" everyday by a single magic cloth wiped across many, but not all, surfaces: equipment, food table, inside the toilet rim, toilet handle, sink. Yes, the SAME cloth. And NOT in the order you would prefer. You might want to bring your own anti-bacterial wipes. * Expect that you will be dining fashionably late for every meal. Also expect to find the food unappealing, nutritionally deficient, and inedible even though you're starving by the time it gets there. * Tell your family that they can expect to get their daily 6000 steps anytime they visit you in the magnificent maze on the hill. Decide for yourself if you want to let them in on how some elevators have different floor destinations for the numbers or just let them figure it out by trial and error and error like I did. My favorite elevator is in the parking garage. Actually, it does become obvious once you figure out to ignore the large steel numbers manufactured into the control panel and read the various kind-of-intact-but-peeling-off printed labels pasted above the panel. (Thankfully, the visually impaired aren't likely to need to fend for themselves at that elevator.) * Expect that if you suddenly get very popular and staff just can't move fast enough, they need your bed. You are about to go home IMMEDIATELY. (What??? You're not dressed yet!) Or maybe within the next several hours. (All dressed up and no way to go.) Just depends on whether or not a wheelchair is available. Now, the good news. Expect that just when you think the entire institution is impossibly inept and distasteful, you may just run into someone exceptionally competent and genuinely enthusiastic about his or her job: a dedicated RN who picks up the slack from the previous shifts, a security guard who understands how to help people who may be having the worst day of their life, a food service person who may not have a decent meal to deliver, but nonetheless presents it with a smile and friendly comment. They are many wonderful employees at Mobile Infirmary. I pray they will be on the job on your floor during your stay. My favorite employee was a cheerful young man who transported my friend via wheelchair for discharge. He is deservedly proud of his position and the great job he is doing! SICU The housekeeping were the only group of truly caring individuals at MIMC. Too few nurses/CNAs showed competent care. The doctors were far too reliant on the Nurses interpretations of a situation with a patient. Charge nurses were too trusting of their staff's interpretation of a patient/family situation. A male nurse was told by the surgeon not to have a post op patient's head lower than her body, yet this male nurse, along with the help he recruited, was witnessed by this family member doing the very thing the surgeon told him not to do. When corrected by family, his reply was, "I always do it this way." But the doctor told him not to! Didn't make sense to me for the nurse to not even follow a simple doctor's order. A complaint to the charge nurse resulted in her saying, "but he's a great charter." We get a new nurse the next day. Guess what, she's in retaliation mode because that male nurse was her friend. Calls security on my brother for VISITING mom. It was more hell after that! Those few days felt like I was walking into the underworld like in the movie, Constantine. You have to go prayed up. John Q. movie. That's the type of fight many families are in because of bias, uncaring, hypocritical care staff. We know our loved one. We can see. I refused to let them mistreat my mom. If they did, they knew it was not good for their brand. I can only imagine the horror she and my brothers went through while I wasn't able to be there because I saw what they were doing to me. "As a daughter, I wouldn't let my mom suffer." In the meantime their social media post expressing how they don't have a relationship with their mom. I wasn't fooled by these devils. My mom's nurses that week weren't following the surgeon's nor the unit doctors orders because, "I was helping with a new patient" OR "I always do it like this." Or "we are short on CNAs today." BUT your colleagues the days before y'all came on were capable and must've been super heroes! because they had the same situation! I wasn't fooled there and saw! A hospital unit allowing the majority of their nurses in a particular rotation to mistreat patients and family, calling security on family for visiting their loved one during visiting hours and getting Palliative Care to euthanize an actively fighting-for-their-life patient BEFORE the actual doctor gives any such order to do so - all because a nurse-friend of theirs, who did not follow doctors orders, was released from caring for that patient... that unit, that hospital has a horrible culture! I understand that everyone has a bias against hard cases, but many cases may be made hard because of the nursing staff who could not care less about following basic orders. I can't tell you how many times the house keeping, the nutrition unit, and other support units would speak to me after those nurses and CNAs would go home and tell me how hard they prayed for my mom when they saw WHO her nurses were! Those heroes noticed my family and I and prayed for us. Those heroes who oftentimes cannot speak up for hospital reasons, recognized the bad HCWs. Why can't the hospital, especially in an hire-at-will state? Because they document well. They are someone's friend at work. There are plenty of capable nurses seeking great opportunities in our hospitals and their specialty units. Supervise more closely, retrain, or get rid of the bad apples so they don't spoil the rest into believing that what they are practicing is care. -K read more

This hospital called him to set up an appt. for surgery and it had been a nightmare. The aftercare after the surgery was horrendous as they did not listen to my sister as she continued to ask for help as my brother in law was having complications. He ended up passing away in there. My husband was there for brain bleed from fall. Also has leukemia. Afib too. Cardio floor nurses and assistants could care less about patient care and compassion. I was Hung up by assistant. Chemo floor first time we were there were attentive and caring. 2nd time a bunch of women sitting around running their mouths and acting as if you weren't there needing something. Cause they don't come to your room. It was horrible! Neuro intensive care wasphenomenal . Neuro floor was worse of any of them. This has been months ago and we have changed to USA Cancer because I cannot enter Mobile Infirmary. I can't believe this has happened to them. I can't believe these people can keep their jobs. This is just the tip of the iceberg that we encountered this past summer. read more

I had spinal fusion surgery 11/07/23. I was in the hospital Tuesday - Sunday. Not once did they offer to help me shower, give me or my husband warm wipes for a sponge bath, wash me hair, etc. Nor did they ever change my sheets, teach me how to maneuver now that my back was fused. The only two nurses who were kind were the ones that helped me get discharged. I overheard the nurses talking crap about me outside of my room. Interesting, as they barely did anything. One nurse actually REFUSED to give me my pain medication. My husband and my cousin pretty much took care of me the entire six days. I refuse to EVER go back there. I was treated horribly! The mental health department is undoubtedly in a crisis for new employees who care more about the patients and overall health. I was admitted to the psych ward willingly twice. Once I was in a bare room for a week. The second time I was put into a smaller room with a window, tv, private bathroom, comfortable bed I could adjust, blankets, pillows, and staff at the touch of a phone call. The first time I was put into a room with no windows and what it looked like cushioned chairs that pulled out into a 1/2 twin bed cot. Boy did it feel like sleeping on the cold tile floor below. They gave me one sheet to sleep with and never allowed a pillow... if you asked for water they'd give you less than a pint in a small cup. I woke up one day to not know the hour or time, asked the nurse for food and was demanded i go lay back down when I had been sleeping and woke feeling well slept. She came back in gave me a shot and I fell back to sleep again, even though I couldn't tell you when the last time I was awake for. I went into the hospital completely sober but they sedated me constantly. I thought I was there for a day or two but once I talked to my partner who called me on the phone 1 week later did I find out how long I was on this cot for. Also, he told me worried that at first he was In tears because he had called the hospital psych unit and they said I was not there.... Called other hospitals, I was not there. But finally after he had exclaimed he had no other recourse to go to one nurse told him I was there... The nurses/ technicians do not care about the patients except for maybe a few and even then they don't really idk if it's protocol or their individuality.... It makes me really wonder.... Furthermore about this bare room it was locked down, dimmed with light 24/7 and had no tv, books, puzzles, or anything. As I became aware, I asked this girl how long she had been in there bc she looked like she had her belongings with her, soft blanket, stuff animal pillow, sheets with coloring on it. She told me at least half a year........ I can't believe she isn't allowed a better place in this hospital. Seriously no one deserves to be in a room with no windows and on a solid hard cot for more than a few days. I'm sure this room is for those who may want to hurt themselves or someone else but am also 100% it will make you want to give up on your mental health completely..... I've been dealing with bipolar disorder since 2019 and it's serious when you have no one on your side. So reach out to someone other than this hospital to help you before your mental health worsens. My mother was in this facility for 94 days and there wasn't a single day that something horrible didn't happen. I asked for a transfer 4 times and they refused and she ended up dying. We were told it was covid but not according to her death certificate. According to that she acquired a pneumonia that only comes from contaminated medical products and was never treated with the proper antibiotics! I've tried complaining to administration and they refuse to speak to me. Do not go to this facility because I'd be willing to bet they are still using those same products on other patients! read more

Most inconsiderate, incompetent bunch of folks I have ever been around that claim to be medical professionals. Wouldn't even bring me any water. Nurse practitioner, Brooke didn't even know how to start an IV. They checked on me twice in 24 hours and I was in bad shape. The girls that worked in the er were sitting outside my room talking about patients being so needy and mad because this sweet old lady had to go to the bathroom. I think the rest of the hospital is ok, but the ER is a train wreck, avoid at all costs. read more

I WANT TO RATE THIS PLACE -0 This is the absolute worst hospital I have ever been in!!!! I AM not the patient-(yes the patient is still here as I write this) My fiancé son has been here for 4 days now! He is extremely yellow, nauseous with no appetite and having abdominal pain! He saw a GI doc Friday and has not seen him since for follow up care while still being in the hospital. They did blood work, ultrasound and an MRI. Nothing was found except bilirubin levels and enzymes levels are extremely high!!! Meanwhile during this stay he sees a nurse maybe 3 times a day. Wasn't in any fluids or anything. When me and his father drove down on Monday. After being here for 4 hours and not one single person coming in his room. We want ti the nurses station and asked what was going in. The charge nurse was great! But she asked if he had his medicine yet and they were waiting on discharge papers...what have y'all done for him!!! Discharge!!! However, his nurse was busy with other patient. The charge nurse after us explaining what has been going on and the fact that he never had fluids and on top of it the nurses the days before were giving him Tylenol for pain when he is as yellow as a banana. Goes and researches his case then comes to tell us " unfortunately as much as I hate ti admit it. You were pushed ti the side. The squeaky wheel gets the grease and with you being so compliant you have basically be forgotten about" At this point I am absolutely floored. We wanted ti be transferred. She stated they were keeping him another night, starting fluids, giving him so meds and she paged the GI doc and stated they f he did not come she would report him!!!!! Well guess what. He never did- and here we are exactly 24 hours later and we have yet ti see him. The hospitalist has seen him every morning but says nothing except she will get with Dr. Alnoah and let us know. Well this GI doc DR. ALNOAH is a joke!!! Haven't seen him in 4 days and then we find out today he thought "the patient " was discharged yesterday! Needles to say...DO NOT EVER COME TO THIS HOSPITAL read more

Let's start by talking about the hospital food. It was BAD! The worst hospital food I've ever eaten. Everything was over-cooked. String beans would disintegrate as you picked them up with your fork. The meat was always (extremely) over-cooked and you would think you were chewing on shoe leather. Fish would be scorched on one side and uncooked on the other. Staff from food services would call you and ask what you wanted for lunch and dinner, but without exception you get something different or missing food items on the tray you agreed upon. Now let's talk about the Nurses and CNAs. There were some good ones, but the vast majority, especially, CNAs were lazy and lacked basic skills. How they passed their competency exam is a mystery. You need to be your own best health advocate. The hospital is known for their "grave" mistakes. I had to stop a couple nurses from administering the wrong medication to me. People have told me that there are a much higher proportion of "Code Blues" at the Infirmary than at other hospitals. I don't know if that statement is true, but I have stayed at many other hospitals and don't remember hearing so many Code Blues, in particular at night, at this hospital. I'm guessing that the night staff took turns sleeping. Hitting the Call Button was a waste of time - very slow response. To summarize, don't stay at the Mobile Infirmary. read more

Mobile Infirmary is an Amazing Hospital. I started working here when I was 18 years old as a unit secretary. I went to Nursing School at Mobile Infirmary/Mobile College school of nursing to get an Associate Degree in Nursing. I worked on Peds/PICU under Sabrina. She was our Nurse Manager and had a Great Team of People working with Her. I had my daughter here. I have had surgery twice here and was scheduled to have surgery in May, 2020. Tracy in admitting was very nice. Kim Sullivan RN in Surgery Prep went out of her way to make sure I was comfortable and well taken care of. It's an Amazing Hospital with Caring Nurses, Physician's and the rest of the hospital staff who work together for the best care for each patient. Mobile Infirmary is an Awesome Place. I wouldn't want to go anywhere else. read more

Mobile Infirmary Hospital Pros: They seemed to gotten my wife well enough to leave and offered adequate follow up referrals. While on the ward one or two of the staff took the time to assess my wife and obtain some history before any actions. Cons: I brought my wife to the ER via ambulance. I was instructed to go through another set of doors for registration which took all of about 10 minutes. I was instructed to wait until called. Over an hour passed before I lost patience and started to ask about her and her situation. Oh, no one called for you. No, I answered. (If they did it was over the PA system which is all but unintelligible.) I was told what treatment room she was in and allowed to enter the emergency room. I had no escort and I had to find her room somewhat hidden in a corner of the ER. I was given the information that she was sedated but they appeared concerned that she had opioids in her system. I had brought all of her meds with us and if they had bothered to look at them they would have realized that she was prescribed this medication for her chronic pain. I got the feeling that they were treating her as someone who OD'd when in fact she was delirious with her high fever and in great pain from her back due to psoriatic arthritis. Her temperature was above 99 degrees which for her is a medical crisis because she has a normally low temperature (97 degrees) as her "normal". I tried to explain this and this information was ignored. The same as when the ambulance attendants ignored it. Additionally, because of the opioids present in her system the staff seemed to take the attitude that she was an addict in withdrawal or OD'd. They appeared to totally ignore my input that a fever causes her delirium. The same approach was taken by the ambulance attendants. I was reminded on several occasions that "we deal with the current situation and don't care about the past". After about another hour or so I was informed that she was now sedated and resting and that they would transfer her to ICU when a room became available. It was recommended that I go home and get some rest. Upon my return I was met by her sisters who informed me that they were told that she came in by ambulance on her own and that her husband had yet to come to the hospital. They were frantic wondering and worrying where I might be. Apparently, this information was not included in any patient briefing from one shift to another or upon transfer to ICU. The CNAs who performed the role of "Sitter" when she was in ICU were of little or no help except on one occasion where she assisted with breakfast. During the early stages they, like the ambulance attendants and hospital staff, would insist that my wife stop rolling around in bed, to lie on her back and uncross her legs. No thought was given to the idea that she may be in severe pain and was trying to find a position that would ease the pain she was experiencing. I assumed that it was hospital policy that no chairs can be offered to family members who were visiting or staying with the patient in ICU. In the room there was a stool at a computer work station for the staff and a small recliner. The CNAs parked themselves in the recliner and never offered its use to myself or my wife's two sisters who also came to visit when they could. The CNAs were comfortable in their recliner and managed to entertain themselves with their smart phone and the television set. Doctor doing a sternum rub - The doctor came in and asked my wife a question, he gave her about a second or two to respond and then he applied a sternum rub with his index and middle fingers. Everything I have been taught and read states that this action should not be the first action. That repeating the question, shaking the patient and other less painful methods should be employed first. I was about to intercede (cold cock the SOB) when my wife responded. However, if the doctor knew anything about his patient he would have known that she had undergone two open heart surgeries and that wire is the only thing holding her sternum in place. The ambulance crew receives a D- The ER staff receives a D The NICU staff receives a D+ The ward staff receives a B. All in all, not a sterling example of quality health care. John Diamond read more

I've been trying to get an update since 9 a.m. They keep saying they will get back with me or nurses are in a meeting. It's 13 hours later. Brother is asking for fluids and doctor since 5. We are considering calling 911 to get mom to another hospital. She now has ALL the signs of kidney failure and we've been waiting on a doctor all day. One nurse says they took her off fluids because she had them in her lung. We're talking intravenous, hon, seriously. They did no labs today. Mom is either having stroke or kidney failure, though she was sharp and quick-witted just 2 days ago. I don't think anyone here cares about anything but punching the clock and getting paid. Exceptions are the nurses in ICU. No one else seems to be able to read her entire chart and she was mixed up with another patient on 2 occasions. I suspect it is possible she got their drugs instead of hers. They let her sit in her poop after asking for help to the bathroom for hours. This is where you go if you want to die I guess. My mother is only there because traffic to USA was diverted due to capacity. Help. We cannot make them do anything and I think we are watching mom die. read more

Still admitted, had knee surgery yesterday. Every single person I have come in contact with including all pre-visits has been friendly, kind and informative. Dinner and breakfast were both very good when you consider the number of meals they are doing. But bottom line is the nursing staff is prime! And of course very happy with both of my doctors, Dr. Patricia Burch and surgeon, Dr. Michael Granberry! read more

I will never step foot in this hospital again. I went to the er for leg pain and from triage all the way down to the doctor, Dr. Mondry, I was treated like an idiot. The nurse got me settled in, her name was Nicole I believe, and then walked to the nurses station and announced that I was fine all I had was restless leg syndrome. The doctor came in about an hour later, I was not checked on at all in that hour, and told me he'd send me for a ct scan. TWO HOURS LATER, I called the nurses station to tell them I was still in pain and someone who wasn't even my nurse came and told me I was being discharged. No information on a diagnoses. After crying my eyes out my nurse finally came in with discharge papers, and asked me what was wrong and then again looked at me like I was insane for even being there and walked out without a word. The doctor came in and said verbatim "why are you crying. You were fine a second ago." Then proceeded to tell me I had two bulging discs and a pinched sciatica nerve and he was discharging me to go to a doctor and figure it out myself. I was waiting to see if I'd ever get a call and I even called the hospital to try to leave a review but no luck so I'm coming here. My advice? Do not go to this er. And if you do, pray you don't get Dr. Mondry or nurse Nicole. read more

Mobile Infirmary has a good reputation, in general. My mother was hospitalized with a joint replacement in December 2014. The nurses in the surgical center took their time with her and helped her stay calm before surgery. The floor nursing staff was outstanding. They were responsive to Mom's needs for pain meds and other requests. They also searched out a rollaway bed and linens for me so that I could stay there with Mom overnight. Mobile Infirmary is the aging Gran Dame of hospitals in Mobile. She's looking rather tired and run down in places. A good coat of paint and deep cleaning the floor tiles would perk her up immensely. read more

So far, I haven't seen any nurses bath, turn or suction an intubated patient. The ICU nurses are hostile to visitors even though the visitors are respectful. i had 2 seizures as i have had since my teens. the very rude,negative,and sloppy ambulance crew took me to mobile infirmary hospital.there i was treated like i was on drugs, they stuck 4 needles in me,kept me in the freezing hallway and made my mother stand up and would not tell her anything about my situation.there was a pregnant nurse there who was the Queen of arrogant. yet they asked my mother several times''what drugs is he on''so they drug tested me and my results came back clean.there was many other things said that i cant recall but do yourselves a favor and pretend this unprofessional collection of rude hearted people in this place does not exist. read more

We arrived with my mother in law after coming from doctor office that called and admitted her. Took about a hour to get her stuff together and get to hospital then after we arrived we check in at admissions. Then it takes another three hours for them to clean a room and get he upstairs. My mother in law is in pain when sitting up and needed to lay down she sat and cried for most of the four hours it took to get her to her room. If it takes 3 or 4 hours to clean a little hospital room they need to hire some other people. read more
