I just did all my holiday shopping in one stop. Mod Gen is a perfect little shop that has unique items (cards, holiday decor, kitchen and home items, books, etc) and fantastic planters and plants for all tastes. And the opportunity to have your chosen plants planted in your choice of planters on the spot makes it so special, especially for someone like me who can't seem to pot a plant to save my life. The store is heavily stocked but not overwhelming; it takes a while to see it all and decide what all I wanted to get. It is a lot of fun to shop here. Park at the Public Market for the easiest way to find a spot or wait for a spot on the street. I am not sure about accessibility as it is a few steps to get in the front door. I didn't see another option but I also didn't look for one. I hope they have access somewhere but call ahead to be sure. read more

This is such a unique store. They have been in business for 23 years. They seem to have a lot of repeat customers from what I heard. The store has a lot of things you will not find in your usual big box stores. Probably none of what they sell here will you find elsewhere. I love their plant selection. They have so many I never heard of or saw before. The employees put a lot of care into the treatment of the plants they sell. I saw an employee carefully watering the plants. She was very focused. Some of the prices are on the steep side. I would definitely shop here for plants if I lived in the area. That plant section was my favorite part of the store. read more

MOD GEN is another place that I absolutely have to visit every time I'm in Milwaukee! It's such a cute shop, selling novelty items like books, mugs, candles, gems, minerals and cards just to name a few (there's so much more). But what I go there for are the plants! So many plants! Tropical plants, cacti, flowering plants...And plants of all sizes! When you check out, they print out care sheets for each of your plants, which is really nice to have! We decided to do our own Shop Small Saturday a week early this year (I mean, shop small is everyday, anyway), and MOD GEN is doing a great job with limiting customers indoors, and providing a safe shopping environment. My girlfriend and I got many gifts for others and air plants/plants for ourselves, with a free succulent, and helpful care instructions. I was visiting from Chi and I looked up crystal stores as I'm an avid collector. Mod Gen showed up, so I thought I'd pop over. Oh my gosh, when I showed up I was blown away by the amazing selection of plants they had! (They had about 4 crystals in the shop, so I don't think they count as a crystal shop haha) Lots of books and housewares too. Fun little shop in the third ward. Novelties, live plants, tons of planters, toys and cards. I'm definitely coming back here soon! Finding parking can be a chore, but it's worth it. I was almost overwhelmed with the selection of unique gifts and decor. Soaps, candles and room sprays lend an inviting smell as you walk in and linger as you walk around the shop to view some unique and uniquely WI gifts. I came to look at plants! They're all around the store but the main selection is in the back. Cacti, succulents, tropical and otherwise. I was actually surprised at the quality and health of their selection. The ceramic planters and cache pots were all beautiful and some whimsical. I'm basically a hoarder of pretty ceramics so I had to browse fast to do as little damage to my wallet as possible. You'll need to look both high and low but the main selection is against the far back wall. And conveniently, so I'd a little clearance section. I had to also practice restraint when walking past the kitchen items and baby/toddler toys that would have made perfect gifts for some family and friends. A lot of the toys looked handmade or sustainably sourced. Beautifully made and - I feel I'm overusing it now - unique. I did buy a plant and two cute pots. I really liked that they printed plant care instructions on the receipt, and the cashier offered to pot up the plant I purchased(but I had a different one at home I would use). It's a thoughtful touch and I will take them up on that offer next trip ... when I buy some larger pots that I NEED to have in my house. read more

This place is the cutest. I came in with a friend looking for a gift and ended up buying a plant for myself. They're great at letting you know the proper care instructions for any plant you pick out and even repotted it for me for a small fee. COVID Precautions: Probably one of the best I've seen. Eventhough online it says general store I would stay it's a full blown plant store. They do get a lot of plants in and a great variety but I will say the prices are way expensive. Sometimes you'll see something affordable for the plant. But the plant market is overpriced as of right now. MOD GEN is so fun to go to! It has so many unique gifts. The best part is the section of plants and fun planters. It all started with a Valentine's Day cactus and became a total cactus/succulent hobby for me. The staff is super helpful and can provide education about the plants and their care. Hi, This is Dominic the reviewer. Today I went to MOD GEN General store. It is located in the Third Ward at 211 N. Broadway St, Milwaukee, WI 53202 I got to meet the general manager, Doug. He told me that the store has been around for 21 years and opened in the Historic Third Ward 4 years ago. They originally were located in Shorewood. Doug said it originally started with mostly garden goods and then they expanded and branched out to more items like gifts and more to make it a general store. Doug said the plants have become their top seller in the store. They have all kinds of cool items inside the store like plants, cactuses, books, soaps, gifts, kitchen items, greeting cards, pots and assorted gifts for anybody or for your house or where ever you live. I thought this store was especially unique and very cool. I would definitely recommend checking this store out for sure. the general manager Doug was very kind to talk to about the background of the general store and how it became very special like it is today. Went in today to buy my first plant. First of all, the place has a really nice flow to it. Beautiful display of their plants and everything else they have to offer. What really stood out was their employees though. Everyone was very inviting and kind. Huge thanks to Jamie, their assistant store manager. However - first a MASSIVE shoutout for the clear and enforced COVID protocols - one of the few places I go that is still limiting capacity and requiring masks to be worn PROPERLY (no nose wavers here!). I love their selection of project - I picked up some beeswax wrap, some succulent potting soil, and made a mental note of some gifts for my friend's baby's upcoming first birthday! Is this store a MODern GENeral store or a store for a MODern GENeration? Who knows.....who cares? This store is kitschy cool! Like a lot of small, hipster shops you find in any up-and-coming/trendy neighborhood, MOD GEN has the goods: artisan candles, kitchen gadgets in throwback colors, Milwaukee themed merchandise (towels, cutting boards, magnets). BUT it also has some interesting merchandise that you don't expect to find in a store like this: a large selection of plants, some rarely ever seen in this part of the country, and accompanying pottery....aged terra cotta? Try finding that at Stein's! Statuary that is interchangeable for the home as well as the garden, carved wooden bird figurines; I even saw a trivet shaped like a hedgehog! Is this a regular go-to store like a Target or a Kohl's? Of course not, but when you're in need of a gift and you don't know quite what to get, this is the place to come to get inspired! Cherry vibes and unique items! The name really suits it and the plant selection is incredible. They also have a large wall of a bunch of fun cards that aren't your typical hallmark cards. They have some fun contemporary home goods and other fun tickets and children toys. There is also a semi large selection of pet goods. Just a fun shop to stop in if you are in the third ward, even if you aren't looking for anything. Barware, bar gadgets, candles. home decor, kitchen tools, tea accessories,greeting cards and gift wrap fill the space. There's something for everyone in every price range for sure. Speaking of prices, know your numbers to allow for comparison shopping. For example, Bittercube Bitters retail for $9 - $10 at most Milwaukee area outlets, but at MOD GEN they are a whopping $14.50. But if it's a unique gift, or a present for someone hard to shop for, you should have no challenges finding something here. read more

The new 3rd Ward ModGen seems a bit smaller than the original Shorewood location. (Side note - remember when ModGen was above Tochi? Like when Tochi wasn't a 40 mile drive away and you could have their bacon egg mazeman ANY time? Wasn't that the best?? ** sobs quietly **) Or maybe they've just streamlined the amount of "stuff"? In any case, they are definitely focusing on indoor plants, especially those that can be grown in a small footprint which makes sense given that they're smack in the middle of 100,000 condos. On plants, prices range from a few dollars for small cacti or succulents to over $100 for what I assume is a rarer plant. I do like their selection of fun interiors stuff. They gave good smelling candles, really fun cards, kitchen stuff and some WI tchotchkes. Prices are definitely higher than they should be but hey, that's the 3rd Ward. Service is still pretty nonexistent so that's definitely the same as the old location. Worth a stop if you like browsing twee stuff or if you just really miss Tochi and want to relive the good old days. read more

Honest truth - I would not have gone into this store except that it's upstairs from a ramen place. SOLD. Especially with it being gift giving time. This place is filled with cute gifts for children and adults. We ended up buying a rocket ship tea ball, emoticandy, scrath paper for children, pens to tattoo your skin, math tattoos! MOD GEN is a fun store to walk around. They have cute gifts and lots of plants. If you buy a plant here, one of the workers will even repot it for you and give care instructions. MOD GEN definitely fits well in the Third Ward. Expect higher prices for fairly basic items. If you have out of town guests, this is usually a place they would like to come. Visited Milwaukee in August and this was one of my favorite stores! It looks like a plant store but also has so many cute item!! Cards, postcards, kitchen items, and a adorable kids selection. The staff is so friendly and knowledgeable about the plants. They spent the time to not only help my mom and I pick out plants but also planted them for us. All plants include care instructions (great idea!) Another plus: they sell postcard stamps!! I have been loving my purchases and will definitely visit if I'm ever back in Milwaukee!! read more

This is absolutely my favorite local store in Milwaukee. I probably own around ten plants now from here. Each buying their pots from MODGEN as well! Every time I have people visiting from out of town I always take them to MODGEN. Not only do they have a great selection of house plants but they have cards, candles, kitchen utensils, mugs, kids toys, pet toys, coffee table books, soups, ornaments, stickers. MODGEN items though aren't basic. Everything they have in the store is just (for lack of a better word) super cool! They have such a homey vibe that I love so much. At work (as a bartender) I got ask by someone who was from New York if we have any touristy spots where he can get a souvenir. In Milwaukee, we don't really compare to other large cities, but I recommended MODGEN as one of the few places where you can look for something to remember Wisconsin by that isn't just a snowglobe. read more

A hipster's dream come true. Love love love everything about MOD GEN. I was visiting from Chicago and I haven't seen a store quite like this that I can compare it to. This place has such beautiful and modern decor. It definitely has a contemporary vibe. They have a vast collection of air plants, succulents and cacti. And also they have different kinds of teraniums. It just so pretty and chic. I've never seen or heard of air plants before either. Just their main display in the front which the couch and the possibilities of how to decorate a small space with these plants is just darling. I can't!!!! Love it. Stumbled upon it when I decided to take my out of Towner visitors to Third Ward. Didn't want to leave the store. I am a plant fanatic and have over 50 indoor plants. Still I was able to find some that I didn't own. The plants are healthy and gorgeously displayed. Love their pots as well. This is a perfect place to find gifts for many occasions. So glad someone in our group suggested going in to this store during our afternoon of exploring Milwaukee! It's described as modern take on a general store. It noticed an overall theme of eco-friendly and sustainable products and books which I admired! I loved all of the plants and pots. If I lived closer and didn't have a 5 hour drive home, I would definitely have bought some house plants here. Very cute selection of pots too, and reasonable prices. The store sells a selection of eco friendly home goods, too. I almost bought a bamboo brush with a silicon scraper on it for my cast iron pan, but the line was a bit long and I didn't want to hold the group up.
