Loved that they offer coffee and water at check-in and my cat was quickly and efficiently checked out by the nurse before the vet came in and did the full check up. I appreciated that the prices are transparent and you're given an estimate with the treatments and get to see your total bill before deciding what you want to do. It makes the process much easier. This is a very long overdue review of my experience at the Modern Animal NoPa location. I was focused on my dog's recovery and didn't have the emotional capacity to write this sooner. Now that he has fully healed, I feel comfortable sharing what happened. On February 27, 2025, I brought my dog in for an emergency after he jumped out of a non-moving vehicle and broke his leg. I didn't realize it was broken until we arrived at the clinic. When we were seen by Dr. Elaine, I was given three options: amputation, euthanasia, or rehoming my dog if I couldn't pay the $10k surgery cost. Being presented with those options so suddenly was extremely difficult. The last two were never going to happen, and I struggled with the idea of amputating his leg. We eventually agreed on medical management, meaning his leg would be splinted and bandaged while it healed. I understood the risks but wanted to give my dog a chance to keep his leg. Later I switched doctors to get a second opinion. The doctor I saw next thoroughly examined my dog and said the leg was already showing signs of healing. He recommended continuing medical management and monitoring for swelling or other concerning symptoms. However, after my dog had his splint placed, it completely came off between 10pm and midnight almost three days later. I had to make another emergency appointment the next day. When I returned, I learned that an intern had been allowed to bandage and splint my dog's broken leg, which was extremely upsetting. Unfortunately the doctor I had switched to was not there that day, so I had to see Dr. Elaine again. While she may be a great doctor for some, my interaction with her felt passive-aggressive and cold. During the appointment she repeatedly pushed for amputation even after I explained that her colleague had just examined my dog and said the leg was healing and that we should continue medical management. Before that conversation, a technician named Kai pulled my dog out of our truck very quickly even though his leg had no support. My dog is a large puppy, and I felt assistance should have been requested given his injury. Later, when Kai came to take him for treatment, she picked him up abruptly and he yelped, which was upsetting to see. A few hours later I received a notification through the Modern Animal app that I was being charged $553, which confused me. When I messaged asking for clarification, no one could explain the charge and told me to ask when I arrived. After waiting some time, I realized my dog had been anesthetized, which I had not been properly informed about beforehand. When I signed the consent form, I had been told he would only be sedated. That distinction matters medically and financially, and I wish this had been clearly explained beforehand. When I asked about the charge at the clinic, the receptionist couldn't explain it either. When I spoke with Kai and Dr. Elaine, I still didn't receive a clear answer. Instead I was told my dog's leg "didn't feel right," that he had a fever, and that he could potentially go septic--then that he would go septic if I didn't amputate. In my opinion, the way this was presented felt extremely alarming and like pressure toward amputation. Terrified that my dog might die, I immediately went to VEG in San Ramon for a second opinion. After examining him, they told me his leg was fine, he did not have a fever, and that I should continue medical management with strict crate rest. The relief I felt was immense, but it also left me very confused about what I had been told earlier. When I later returned to have the splint rewrapped, Kai seemed happy that things were going well. However, Dr. Elaine avoided speaking with me after I mentioned that VEG confirmed my dog was healing properly. Eventually my dog's leg healed and it was time for the splint to be removed. My partner picked him up while I was at work. The doctor who removed the splint told us my dog would need assistance while walking because he had lost muscle in that leg. However, my partner later witnessed Kai walking my dog outside the building without any support after the splint had been removed. When I called the clinic, I was initially told they would look into it, but later received a call saying it didn't happen because "Kai is aware of the situation with his leg," despite my partner witnessing it. After everything that happened, I switched to a different location in May 2025. Many of the interactions I experienced at this location felt impersonal and lacking compassion. I do want to acknowledge that one veterinary technician stood out during this experience. She was professional, enthusiastic, and made me feel like my concerns truly mattered. The good news is that my dog made a full recovery and his leg healed perfectly, which I am incredibly grateful for. However, the experience at this location was extremely stressful and at times very concerning. read more

So far so good. We tried Modern Animal because they offered a promotional sign up bonus, free for first year unlimited visits. My sister in law recommended them to us and she got a $50 bonus credit for doing so. I think that was the deal / program? They have been great. Modern and clean front office and waiting area. Complimentary drinks while you wait. Decent parking lot given the location street parking is very difficult. We are on a budget so we have to carefully pick Vetinary services, prescriptions, vaccinations and pet medical needs. That being said we use Modern Animals All access membership for vet visits, consultations and prescriptions. Using the app for communications and scheduling visits is very convenient. They are very responsive to Q/A with vet techs. As others have commented all Vetinary clinics are a business and need to make money so it is understandable they try to sell you services and products. While annoying, I get it. We politely decline services or products we don't feel necessary. We also use various vet services Petco and Petfood Express offer at good prices as well and Costco for heart worm prescription meds as well. The All Access membership service has been a great resource for us as we typically need vet advice 3-4 times a year. Our other vet charged $65 for any vet interaction so we are ahead of the game with MA. Recommend a friend and you get $50 credit after their first vet visit. They also get $50 credit once they've completed the first visit. All in all a great vet service. read more

We were called back for a separate vet tech appointment to have our dog's blood pressure checked, despite no reading having been taken at his appointment the week prior. The blood pressure check literally involve putting a cup on our dogs right front leg. It appeared that the vet tech did not know what she was doing. This was confirmed with a blood pressure reading of 280 which was clearly inaccurate. We were charged $66 for a standalone blood pressure check. When we asked, why did we need to return to have our dog's blood pressure checked and why was no blood pressure reading taken the week prior we did not receive a reply. read more

However, Modern Animal was game changing. Both our tech and vet were great -- extremely considerate and allowed me to handle as I saw fit. A year late writing this review oops! But we have been going to Modern Animal for a little over a year now and love it! It obviously provides some flashy perks like beautiful offices, free quality beverages, and a gorgeous app. But it is also backed with knowledgeable staff. The app/internal records system is really what makes Modern Animal stands out against competitors. So easy to see all your appointments, results, medications, and what's due. You can easily refill meds, make/change/cancel appointments, and chat for preliminary support. There are great vets and not so great vets... you just have to try a few different people to see who you like best and once you have someone you like try to make sure you schedule with them moving forward. The only bad thing I've noticed is that there seems to be a decent amount of turnover in staff and lots of people fresh out of vet school. Would love consistent staffing and more experience but so far have not had any terrible experiences with anyone. Updated to 3 stars because they were super nice on the app interaction I had with them. Thank you. Our most recent visit was mixed but mostly not a good one. Good: The vet tech assigned told me that I should not have the Distemper & Parvo vaccination so soon after my pup's recent rabies vaccination because that will reduce the effectiveness of the rabies vaccination. Thank you, that's helpful. Bad: The vet tech we teamed up with had to wait for a partner to draw blood for my pup for a heartworm test. This particular vet tech's partner (partner, not the tech) poked my pup multiple times and she couldn't draw any blood. I even helped by asking if feeding him food will help as they continue to search for his vein to draw blood. Even tho he ate many treats I brought in with me, it wasn't helping because for whatever reason, they couldn't draw the blood and no matter how much treats, now Biko is in pain. Then she (the partner) said to me if I consider having my pup on anti anxiety medication. I responded by pointing at Biko and said he doesn't need medication. If I was being poked by needles multiple times I would be in pain and not wanting to cooperate either. He's obviously not the problem. He is a happy and food motivated boi and just moments before wagging his little tail. (And yes, I can tell you I have this experience recently at my 2nd surgery where they had this intern helped me and they have no idea how to insert an IV into me, so he kept poking me until another nurse helped and got the IV onto top of my hand because they couldn't hook it up on my arm, so I do know what I'm talking about and can relate to my pup's pain and discomfort.) I digress. After a lot of stress, and me basically telling them I was not happy with how things are going, another vet tech stepped in & helped us. What an "Angel", she was able to get blood drawn as I held my pup. Finally! They did offer me a $ discount for all the stress. Thank you, but I rather the first tech partner knew what she was doing. Maybe Modern Animal needs to get their people better trained. I kept apologizing to my poor pup for this experience. I noticed in the last two visits, the vet techs seem more rough with my pup in how they handle the appointments. On previous visits, things were smoother as reflected in my previous review. Is it staff shortage, too many new and inexperienced vet techs? I don't know. I still have one more vaccination appointment to schedule for my pup and am hesitant to come back. I'm a loyal customer as you can tell from my check ins. But I'm also a very concerned pet parent wanting the best care for my pup. While they are all very nice folks, I'm very concerned for my pup and wary of some of the vet techs now. The App: One more thing I noticed about their app is that previously you can choose who you want to work with (e.g. doctors; vet techs), now it's you input what you are trying to schedule for and then they (AI) show you availability (which isn't much in SF). A cash grab from start to finish. Brought in my cats because they had fleas and were due for their shots. Every choice by the vet was designed to maximize what he could charge. I explained that topical flea treatments hadn't worked in the past and I would prefer a pill. He insisted on topical. Turned out his motivation was that Modern Animal only sells topical. When that predictably didn't work (to the tune of $150) it took him 2 weeks to approve a prescription pill from Chewy, presumably because he doesn't get a cut so couldn't be bothered. He refused to prescribe a dewormer (standard treatment if cats already have fleas) unless I paid for a $100 fecal test first. He also refused to update their FIV shots unless I first paid to have each cat tested for FIV at another $100 each. These were not stray cats, I was just switching vets. Then, despite my cats showing no signs of gum disease or discomfort with their teeth, he pushed hard for a $6k tooth cleaning under anaesthesia for each cat. Keep in mind there is a ~0.5% risk of serious complications each time you put a cat under, and this guy told me it was important to do annually even if the cats didn't seem to be having issues. Over the lifetime of a cat that's a 7 to 8% chance of serious or deadly complications. The specific vet was Adam Cabrera. Maybe other vets at the practice are great, but if they try to give you this guy, run for the hills. read more

I am so so glad we tried Modern Animal a few years ago when my partner and I adopted our cat. We have had nothing but good experiences, and the fact that we can walk our cat down the street to the Nopa location is the icing on the cake. Backstory: when we first adopted our cat, he was getting what we later learned to be 'rodent ulcers'. However, before we knew what this was, we were trying to get in for appts at our previous provider and it was impossible. You'd call, leave a message/request a call back, and never get a response. I understand they were (are?) probably understaffed but we didn't want to have to bring him in for urgent care that would cost a ton of $. We read up on MA and decided to join and see how things went. Fast forward to the present and our cat is healthier than he's ever been. They were able to get him on a prescription diet, and when we've had flair-ups, it has been easy to get him in for a check-up. Best of all, regular visits are included as part of the membership, so we're only paying for real services performed. And finally, we've seen several doctors here and they've all been very knowledgeable and super helpful. I really can't speak highly enough of their location at Nopa. read more

Has an issue with my dog where he may have i jurisdiction his eye. Wasn't particularly bas, thought I would get someone to look and my vet has no space. Called these guys and it looked like they had some time the next morning, but, they require a filled out application. I use a PO box to avert mail theft and keep from getting pounds of unwanted advertising. The app would not take my po box and the person told me to input my real address. After a bit of argument, they said they would look into this and call.me back. They never called back. There is no reason they need a psychical address because you pay at time of service. The only reason to gather data is to sell it to advertisers. JUST BE AWARE when you decide to use this hospital read more

I've debated writing this review for a while because I like being able to get an appointment within a couple weeks, but sigh. here we go: Dr Jeon is the best veterinarian we've had in almost a decade. Within minutes (!!!) of meeting us he suggested that some of the medication that my dog was taking (mind you, for YEARS at that point), was unnecessary, and due to a misdiagnosis. We'd seen - oh, idk, 5? - local-ish vets during those years, and not one batted an eye. We stopped the medication and the doc was right - it had been unnecessary. Needless to say, that day had been my aha! moment that we'd found the vet we'd stick with for as long we possibly could. It's been maybe 2 years since then, we see Dr Jeon regularly, and my dog is healthier now than he's been in years. People consistently assume he's a puppy. We also had a dental recently which I've been dreading every day for years. Dr Jeon worked with us to make sure my dog was as healthy as possible for the procedure, and agreed to run a few extra tests at my request (hi, im anxious, and you are?) the dental went super smoothly, appetite was back mere hours after the procedure, and energy was entirely back to normal the next morning. Oh, and if you like to ask questions, this might be the most patient vet I've ever met. The rest of the staff is also amazing (I didn't forget about you), down to the reception desk, which has notoriously been a pain point just about everywhere we went. Vet techs, nurses, other docs - phenomenal. Dr. Wu suggested I stop cooking and try a pre-made fresh food, and my dog's appetite skyrocketed and hes back to a healthy weight, and his poops are just perfect (iykyk). anyway, this could turn into a Harry Potter-length review, so if you have any questions just send me a message. read more

There was no wait; they took me and my skittish kitty directly into an exam room. After a terrible experience at my previous vet, I knew it was time for a change. As I was starting to look for a new vet, I somehow started to see more ads for Modern Animal and eventually caved in. If you understand the One Medical service, it's basically that but for your pets. The main selling point was the yearly membership fee that includes appointments and virtual consultations. I downloaded the app, signed up, and was able to book an appointment for a couple days later. The app is really easy to use, and honestly makes the vet experience a whole lot better compared to having to call in like I did at my previous vet. The first appointment went smooth. My pup Mila was treated with love and care and everyone I interacted was very nice and patient. I appreciated that I never felt like I was being upsold and they were able to load up all the estimated to the app within minutes. Pricing for services like vaccinations and flea/tick medicine were on par with what I paid at my previous vet. The app stores all the estimates, blood work, and vaccination records and it's available at your finger tips. This made it super easy to get docs to send to my pet insurance provider. What I appreciated the most was that they weren't pushy or trying to upsell me one bit. The space itself was very Modern and clean. If my cat who gets spicy at vets love this place, so will you ;) Seriously, my cat historically has been unable to be properly examined in past vets unless she is sedated. It's my second time using Modern Animal, and Dr. Frankenberger and Angie did a phenomenal job. They were extremely patient, gentle, friendly, and great at what they do. They took the time to meet my cat and let her get accustomed to them. They met where my cat was (literally and metaphorically because we did most of the exam on the ground as my cat wanted to explore down there) and took things slow rather than forcing things upon her, which was key. Treats were fed by the team throughout the exam to distract Luna my cat, hands were super gentle and soft voices used only. Not pushy on unnecessary procedures/tests either. It's my second time using Modern Animal and I will continue going there as long as I can because no other vet is as patient and gentle. The entire care team and chat function is really useful as well! You can ask questions any time and they are super responsive. I requested to be let in at the back entrance so Luna wouldn't get nervous from seeing other animals, and they were super accommodating about that. They offer you drinks (canned coffee or sparkling water!) on the way out too which is super nice. This is truly a new kind of veterinary experience. I brought my dog here when he was non-stop licking his back paw. His primary vet was out and I decided to visit Modern Animal as a recommendation by my neighbor. The facility is very clean, minimalistic and friendly staffers. Unfortunately, I left my visit without a definitive answer of what might have caused the swollen and blistered paw. My dog was given the allergy shot, Cytopoint and anti-bacterial wipes. The vet spoke highly of the shot and assure me it will start working and stop the itching within 24 hours. However, neither the shot or the wipes were effective for my dog. The itching continued and got worst. Spoke with my primary vet the following few days and was instructed to try a foot soak with epsom salt or chlorhexidine. Tried it, it was like magic and cleared up the issue in a few days. The swelling went down tremendously after 2 foot soaks (in 1 day). While the office was nice and clean, it would have been a better experience to have a solid answer to my dog's issue. read more

I had a pretty shocking experience with modern animal today. I thought they were a great & transparent company that let customers know how much they'd be spending on their animals & that they care about customer service. In august of 2024 I brought my dog in for a little health scare and she was given an exam and everything was fine. As I was checking out the woman at the desk asked me if I wanted to do a fecal sample. I hesitated because she wasn't due for a wellness exam & the test is over 130 dollars. The woman that worked at the front desk told me to pay now and "bring it in whenever". I didn't forget that I had paid for it but since her health scare had nothing to do with a fecal exam I paid for it and figured I'd just bring one in the next time she had a checkup. Well she had a checkup scheduled for today and I reminded them that we paid for a fecal exam so hopefully it was just in the computer on record. They informed me that the payment "expires" after 30 days and I'd need to pay an additional 132 dollars if I wanted that routine test done. When I asked why they explained that was policy and they were sorry for my frustration. This seems so unethical if not completely illegal. If the woman had told me that the money I spent somehow expires (?) after 30 days I wouldn't have paid that. A side note is I did a bunch of research today and got her 2 vaccines and a fecal sample done for 145 dollars total @ VETCO. We're searching for another vet for comprehensive exams but I thought I'd add that the prices are pretty unfair to begin with, not including the fact that they lie & scam people out of hundreds by these made up policies that are not disclosed up front. read more

They do take time to make sure you understand and participate in process of healing your pet.
