It was a blend of slightly spicy peanut sauce, lentils, and burst in your mouth squash. I had the eggplant lasagna. It could have been hotter and had enough olives to turn me off. Hubby had the coconut Chana masala. Even though the menu said it was spicy - it was only Nebraska spicy. But had a flavorful combination of seasoning. This place seems pretty popular. You have to make reservations to be seated. Food had great presentations and most dishes were well flavored. I had the gnocchi with spicy marinara sauce. YUM! It had a very nice spice to it and the gnocchi was very soft and delicious! My friend has the mac and cheese. Perhaps because of how awesome my dish was, I found hers just ok. I was super excited to go to this restaurant when visiting Omaha and it did not disappoint. This is my second favorite vegan restaurant I've ever been too and I've lived in LA and NYC. I got the special which was a "chickpea" parmesan sandwich sort of a vegan play on a chicken parm sandwich. I love a good parmesan sub (eggplant parm was one of my favorites back in my ovo lacto veg days). I was curious how they could make a chickpea patty taste like a chicken patty but they sure did. The chickpea patty was crispy and savory. The marinara sauce and vegan cheese were amazing and melted perfectly. My only slight complaint on an otherwise perfect meal was I thought the bread could have been toasted a little longer. I got it with a salad on the side which was also delicious. I also got their almond joy tart for dessert. It was a vegan play on almond joy candy and was chocolatey coconutty deliciousness with the most amazing vegan whipped cream. I've been loving Modern Love since I was a high schooler, their Mac and Shews have gotten me through all of the ups and downs of life: break ups, graduations, 21st birthdays, friends moving away, you name it. I always have helpful and sweet servers, and I can't imagine a better atmosphere! I'm not a vegan. I think the delivery of the food was good though not everything hit a 5 star for me (details below). However I feel like it's harder to do vegan foods which is why I did give them a 5. Hits: Definitely go for the fried mozzarella which is actually a cashew fauxmage. The Walnut chorizo on the nachos were fantastic. Warm Apple tart: this was about a 4 for me Half Misses?: These weren't terrible, but more average and I think there might be better things to order Seitan brisket: there was an overly watery portion of my dish which made the dish not fantastic. The over fried part of the brisket was noticeable. they weren't really emulating beef... It was much more like pork and I don't know how I felt about that. Chickpea cutlet parmesan: I didn't mind this but my gf who actually ordered it didn't finish it and didn't want to pack it home. The pasta that came with it was a bit lack luster as well. Cookies n cream cheesecake: I've just had better vegan cheesecakes. I really like Modern Love. The food quality is always great and it's awesome to have at least one fully vegan restaurant in Omaha. What sucks is that it's the ONLY fully vegan restaurant in Omaha, and their prices reflect that. When I lived in Denver there were a few completely plant-based restaurants that I can say were just as good in taste and quality, if not better than Modern Love, and cheaper too, even in downtown Denver. But because there are no other vegan restaurants to compete with in Omaha, Modern Love can charge what they do. Our entrees were like $16 and $18, and we got two appetizers which were very good tasting, but their barbecue fried cauliflower appetizer only came with like 5 pieces of cauliflower, which was disappointing because it was so delicious! We also had the quesadilla which was delicious as well. Our entrees were the mac'n'shews and the wild mushroom schnitzel. Both entrees had great flavor and because we ordered two appetizers, we had leftovers. The mac'n'shews came topped with what looked like grilled cauliflower and breaded tofu, which we didn't remember from ordering the dish last time so it was a nice addition. The wild mushroom schnitzel was awesome except the stems and bases of oyster mushroom clusters are tough, and they include the whole cluster in your meal, so I discarded the bottoms of stems and the base of the cluster, which made me feel like I was wasting food but it's literally almost impossible to chew and definitely not pleasant trying to. I always want to go back to Modern Love just for the fully plant-based options, but I literally have to save up money in order to. It IS great food, but I don't necessarily think it's worth the expensive prices of almost $20 an entree. read more

I would have given this place 5 stars if they didn't overload the food with so much MSG. We had an appetizer and entree. Everything was delicious!!! The wait staff was friendly and prompt. About 15 minutes after we left, we had dry, swollen tongue and tight throat. Too much MSG causes those symptoms for us. They were the worst we've ever had, meaning there was a lot of MSG in the food we ate at Modern Love. We won't be going back and don't recommend this place only because of the MSG overload in the food. Bummer. read more

Ok, so Modern Love doesn't need ANOTHER 5 star review from a vegan customer in Omaha, yet here I am! This place is just so awesome. A fully vegan restaurant in a town with soooo many restaurants but sooooo little vegan food. This place kinda specializes in comfort food style cuisine. There is serious attention to detail here with the flavors of their food. For example, you're not going to get just a vegan burger or just a gnocchi with pesto, it's going to have some added flair. Even their drinks are very signature. They have/had an orange soda with real vanilla bean in it...yuuummm. My husband who is not vegan has enjoyed most of his dishes here. I'm kind of a creature of habit and get my mac and shews fix almost every visit here. We also share the bean and cheese enchilada frequently. We haven't had a dessert we didn't like. One of the dishes my husband wasn't super excited about was the shepard's pie. I think he was looking for something a little "meatier" like with faux meats or something, so it wasn't the dish itself, just his expectations were off. He really enjoyed the bacon burger though, so if you have a non-adventurous, non-vegan guest I would recommend that! We've also had the seitan wings in the past which were amazing. This restaurant isn't super roomy, so even if it's just a few people I would call to reserve a table. One thing to remember is that this restaurant is a bit pricier than your average restaurant, but for good reason. It'd be so awesome if they opened one up in West Omaha! read more

I can appreciate a good vegan restaurant. Let me tell you if I could have the buffalo wings for breakfast, lunch and dinner, I would! They are absolutely to die for. My standards were high after reviewing other reviews across different social media platforms. I give this place 4 stars because I really did like the vegan cheeseburger and Modern Sundae. It's hard to get the vegan meat substitutes right, and Modern Love knows what it's doing in the burger arena. The buns were also delicious and will definitely fill you up. I wanted to try the mac and shrews but the prices aren't the cheapest. I wasn't going to spend $16 for mac n cheese after spending $14 for a burger. The markups for vegan food can be over pretentious. We all know veggies are dirt cheap. My boyfriend went because I made him. He typically gets turned off by the words "vegan" and "vegetarian". He was impressed, however, with the cheeseburger I ordered but was not impressed with the appetizer wings he ordered. I did not care for the wings either and have had better. If you must take a non-experimenter, I would suggest the cheeseburger. He ordered also ordered a chai tea and thought it was way too sweet for his manly tastebuds. I want to say this was because they did not carry basic teas but can't be certain. For dessert, we ordered the Modern Sundae which consists of a chocolate brownie, candied nuts, and chocolate and vanilla ice cream. I do recommend this and would order double vanilla ice cream because chocolate on chocolate was too much. Service was good. We did not have a reservation but were squeezed in. I'm sure it helped we came before the rush (I want to say around 4pm). Do make a reservation-the place is small. I thought it was cool that there were volleyball courts on the other side of the parking lot and a bar next door for drinking after if you fancy. CAVEAT EMPTOR: My husband and I live in Portland, OR, which is the land of vegan food, so we're admittedly very spoiled. My husband and I went to Modern Love with my in-laws who live in Omaha. My in-laws are not vegans or vegetarians, but they'd gone to this restaurant a few times at mine and my husband's urgings, and each time they reported the food was just so-so, and incredibly over-priced. They were right. We ordered the enchiladas, the mushroom piccata, the kale pesto gnocchi, and asparagus with hollandaise for the table to share. The asparagus was fantastic, though slightly under-cooked (the stems were extremely crunchy) and the hollandaise was amazing - creamy, light, savory. But then the main dishes came out. The enchiladas were baked in a ramekin and when they arrived at the table, the top level of the food was blackened and rock-hard, and the filling was extremely bland. I added a ton of salt and pepper to it but we only ate about 1/3 of the dish. The gnocchi was pretty good, but was also very bland. Are the cooks at Modern Love afraid of spices? This was the one dish that was eaten the most, but we didn't finish it. It was just too boring to continue eating it any further. Finally the mushroom piccatta was inedible. The oyster mushroom was cooked beautifully, and the whipped potatoes were light and creamy, but the piccata sauce was so lemon-y, it over-powered the other flavors on the plate. My father-in-law took one bite and pushed his plate away. When he mentioned the over-lemoned sauce to the server, he was met with a polite nod of acknowledgement, but no offer of a comped meal was forthcoming. In my experience, if a customer complains that the food is inedible and the evidence is on his plate, the kitchen should taste the offending meal and comp the dish (or offer to bring the customer something else). Our server was very nice and she promptly brought our drinks to the table, but she couldn't answer many of our questions regarding the food (like if the enchiladas were very saucy, or what exactly a piccada was. Guess it was our bad for ordering those dishes anyway). Finally, our tab (with some drinks and a slice of so-so coconut cream pie) was nearly $200. After tip, we walked out of there $240 poorer and still hungry. The gnocchi itself was $18! That is outrageously expensive considering the cost of rent in that postage stamp-sized restaurant can't be that much. My husband and I were really looking forward to eating at this restaurant. We've bought Isa Chandra Moskowitz's cookbooks for friends and family, but her food and restaurant were a huge disappointment. I'm still giving it two stars because every vegan restaurant should be supported and I applaud the good people of Omaha "steak country!" Whoa. Staff is knowledge & eager to give advice and opinions. The only issue is with that is everything is fantastic, so there's no way to choose one dish that's better than any other dish. The menu is perfect size: good options, but not overwhelming. Great cocktails. Fresh, amazing food. The watermelon, beet, honey-mustard, Brie appetizer opened a portal to the heavens for me. We tried 4 entrees & 2 desserts between us. Everything was great. The restaurant space itself is good for dates & families & everything in between. It is so painful for me to write this review as Isa Chandra Moskowitz is my very favorite cookbook author. I was passing through Omaha last week, so took the opportunity to make a reservation at Modern Love. First off, I didn't realize how tiny this place was. The dining room was completely full and very loud. We were less than a foot from the table next to us, and felt like we had no privacy at all. I wish I could say the food was amazing, I really do....but we were not impressed at all. For dinner, we had the Seitan Wings (which were fine) and the Mac & Shews (bland mac & cheese and bland tofu, way undercooked, hard cauliflower). For dessert, we had the S'mores Cheesecake (dense, glue-y and not like cheesecake at all) and Pina Colada Pie (flavor was good but crust had a weird texture) - also pretty pricey at $8 a slice. Iced tea tasted like water, and we were not offered refills at $4 a glass. This place doesn't compare to some of the great vegan restaurants I've been to elsewhere. I've actually cooked much better meals and desserts myself from Isa's cookbooks. Despite my disappointment though, it's important to me to support vegan establishments - and I am happy to see this place is so busy and that most customers love the food! read more

Took a friend for birthday as she wanted to try this vegan restaurant. For drinks, we ordered a raspberry mojito, but without the alcohol, and the vanilla rum shake, both which were very good. Appetizer was the spinach artichoke dip but was very bland so was not overly impressed with it. The reason for the two stars is that after waiting nearly 40 minutes for our food, we asked the waitress when we would be served and was told that we were next up. After a few minutes they brought our entrees, and they were cold. My friend had ordered the garlic alfredo dish and they did remake it so she could have a hot meal so we appreciated that. I ordered the chimichanga and it was lukewarm at best. So if we were "next up" our dinners should have been piping hot. Feel that are dinners sat back in the kitchen for awhile and we got over looked. We both decided there was no need to go back. read more

It's tough writing this review of Modern Love. It was the location of me and my significant others first date. We have had many great meals there as well. Things took a sharp downturn when they moved to the new location and an even greater turn after Covid-19. The new location was beautiful and fitting but for whatever reason it seemed to galvanize a sense of superiority put out by the staff. Maybe they sensed a greater number of non-vegan patrons and became tired of comments like, "I can't believe this is vegan," or perhaps inquiries about non-vegan food. Whatever the reason we felt noses turned up at us, strange because we are in fact devoted vegans. We could look past that, the food WAS good enough. Despite the quality, the food is in fact, very overpriced. I know it's a niche restaurant for Omaha but not the Midwest in general. The quality of the food started to nosedive afterwards anyways, even before Covid. After Covid, the food was no longer hitting any marks. Our orders were cold, missing items, small portioned and many times bland. The second to last time we vowed to never eat there again. Finally we broke down on January 8th, 2021 and made an order hoping things had improved. I had asked the staff if I could come to the door to get the food because my phone was having issues. I was there 5 mins early to let them know I was waiting outside. I tried to get everyones attention through the glass but failed. Wearing my mask I entered the vestibule and knocked on the glass to get the person at the bars attention. They rudely gestured at me to try and get me to exit the vestibule, tired of being ignored I gestured him to come to me and explained the situation. Things cooled off and we received are food shortly after. We pulled into the park across the street to eat as we had always done since Covid and were saddened to find things had not improved for the food. The bread was burned on both sandwiches rendering them inedible and the fries (although a nice portion) a sloppy soggy mess tasting of old fry oil. We had company visiting from out of town, one of whom is a vegan. When we made the announcement a couple of years ago that we'd be moving to Omaha, she exclaimed, "THAT'S WHERE MODERN LOVE IS. Oh, and I'm going to miss you guys." She made reservations on a Saturday night, and when we arrived, it was obviously busy. It felt kind of awkward because there's only a small section to wait for your table to be ready, and you're left standing in the way of the servers. This place is small, but it's only uncomfortable while you're waiting. It's fine once you're at your table. But it's small and adorable! The design is so cute that you'll forgive the cracks and punctures in the drywall. Even the bathroom is cute (there's only one, and it's unisex; just mentioning that for the potty police who'd feel at home at the Hive or in North Carolina.) It is adorable, but here's the problem I have with veganism. It's not the usual stuff. It's the cutesy-ness of terms like "nooch," "shrooms" (hi, if they're not hallucinogenic, I'm not that interested,) "'shews," etc. I find the vegan vernacular (vernac'?) to be cloying, but if that's my only complaint, that's a good thing. Playing our roles in the vegan's dream, we tried a little bit of everything. Two appetizers: latkes and brussels sprouts. I wasn't wowed by the latkes themselves, but the applesauce on the side was terrific. There are few vegetables I love more than a perfectly cooked brussels sprout, and I loved these ones so much that I considered just getting two orders of them as my entree. I didn't do that. Instead I ordered the Maple Mustard Salad solely because it had figs, and figs are the best. Everything else was an afterthought for me, and I did eat everything it else. The others ordered the Mac and Shews, Wild Mushroom Picatta, and a battered tofu served with kale. The tofu was the only thing I didn't care for. While it was prepared PERFECTLY, it was lacking in flavor. Dessert was probably my second favorite part of the evening, the brussels sprouts and figs in a dead heat for first. We ordered the Fat Elvis Pie and the brownie sundae. The crust on the pie was a bit too dense and took a long time to chew, but who the fuck orders pie for the crust? No matter, the filling was unbelievable, and I'm someone who doesn't even like bananas or peanut butter that much!
