This cute little store on Westminster street has a lot of fun things for the house, for yourself or for the woman in your life. Modern Love, opened in 2010 as a sleek, modern lifestyle store with a gorgeous selection of costume jewelry and accessories for home or for a gift. They lines such as Herschel, Brixton, Fjallraven, Paddywax, Crow Canyon Home, Mosser Glass and much more. Every time I walk in, I find the staff very welcoming and helpful. Their customer service is very on pointe and they also provide complimentary gift wrapping for all your purchased gifts and treasures. This last time, I was browsing around for some soy candles and their selection is large. Many types of scents can be smelled, I found the one I was looking for. The store is super dog-friendly. Visit, so you can grab a soy candle, some fun earrings, some dresses for the special lady, some fun books, quality hats or a durable and fashionable Herschel backpack. read more

What a fun little store! We stumbled upon this shop after dinner while walking downtown providence. One side of the store is filled with home decor and jewelry and the other side has clothing, sunglasses, hats, etc. You can easily spend over an hour here. My niece, sister and I bought some jewelry, they had quite the selection. They be staff was also kind and helpful. I will definitely be back. read more

Modern Love has me hooked. I recently ventured into Providence's Art District for some browsing - and when I came across this accessory paradise, I nearly squealed with joy. Shoes - purses - necklaces - earrings - other amazing-ness....all within completely reasonable price range (earrings ~15$, purses ~50$, shoes ~20$). I drooled over earrings (which dangled pistols, lightning bolts, and feathers), necklaces with moustaches, and rings made from Legos (pushing up daisies). The selection is pretty unique - definitely not "mainstream" tacky jewelry like you might find at Claire's. After circling the accessories table three million times, I settled on a set of black heart earring studs (made from :: LITE BRITE MATERIAL!!!) for only TWELVE dollars! ...perfect for the looming holiday of teddy bears and plastic red garbage [gag]. I have shopped here many times but not for clothing until two days ago. There stuff runs really small and I just found out that you can only return for store credit. I made an impulse purchase of a lingerie set that, of course I couldn't try on, held it up to me when I got home and realized it wouldn't fit. Came with the receipt, original card, bag with tissue still in it less than 48 hours later and now I'm stuck with a gift card. Disappointing. Their return policy is apparently on their receipt- though it's a little to late at that point to factor in to your purchase. Won't be taking any more chances with their clothes. read more

Lucky me I was staying at The Hotel Providence and it was just a hip skop and a jump over to this delightful retail duo. Modern Love is the shoe and accessories side of the getup...and ohmygodilovedeverything. Frye boots! Funky shoes! Well-priced sunglasses! Headbands! Infamous make-your-own-earrings! Just a galore of wonderful items to peruse in a bright, cheery, cheeky story with lots of light. And shoes. Did I mention that? Lots of Hobo bags, local jewelry, etc too! My loot: Retro plastic sunglasses. Black banded headband. Copper braided headband. And even though Karen wasn't there, her sales associate with the best shoes ever (fitting!) was a doll. I am not your average woman--aka, I do not like to shop (I know girls, I may be missing some crucial DNA). You're not going to see a ton of "store" reviews on here because most of 'em I don't like so I don't go in. Makes it easy. But Modern Love is different. It's got the LOVE, which is good because it had the balls to throw it right in the name. The vibe is "somebody cares about this place," which I dig. We've seriously fallen into a dearth of businesses who simply don't give a crap about being passionate, caring for their customers and their wares, paying any sort of attention to creating a special experience. I was in shock and awe when I found the opposite to be true of ML. I like the owner. She's friendly and knowledgable and her staff is the same. Helpful without being pesky and pushy. They helped me find a super cool, funky pair of boots--something I've been on the hunt for for quite some time (you can imagine since shopping ain't my thang). I was even more surprised that they had 'em in my size (I have baby feet--5 1/2). Hallelujah! The selection is made up of a mix of funky, handmade-looking, mod, colorful clothing, shoes, and accessories. Not way out there, but far enough off the beaten path to make you sigh and rejoice that you're not in The Gap. I think we can all agree, that's a modern gift. read more

This lower octave of a lovely two-pronged tuningfork begs the question - and in nearly perfect pitch - who is a bigger weirdo, me or the members of the staff employed here? This of course is meant as an under-handed compliment. Understand that boutiques are not exactly my thing - let alone ones catering to members of the opposite - but I just can not help but be lured by thoughtfully arranged window displays. And frankly, I really like cool stuff. ML has these attributes in, well, hearts I suppose... To the gift-giving-challeged gentlemen amongst us, this shoppe (pompous spelling) as well as the co-joined QoH, are great starting points. This is particularly useful info when on the hunt for a special something for an even more special lady (who just so happens to also possess a particularly difficult-to-wrangle aesthetic). I am a curious fellow, so I have a tendency to ask questions. I also understand that sometimes when guys like me are browsing and making small talk, it can come across as just another strange fella, trying to pick up. But the banged, browed and booted, cardigan-over-party-dress wearing gals do a great job playing along, making suggestions and even offer to put a bow on it. Of course my only concern is upon settling the bill, they never wave bye-bye. But I try... I try (while attempting to not be such a weirdo) Oh well. read more

I have to give an update - my experience there last week was just too good to go unmentioned. I needed a new pair of boots. Nothing fancy, but something sturdy, stylish and comfortable. Knowing they carry Frye (my fave line of shoes), I made a bee-line for Modern Love, and I was not disappointed. I tired on every boot in that store, and Karen didn't bat an eye. She was fun, helpful, chatty and sweet as could be as we made our way through every size 9 boot she had and as I created a huge mess. She was actually the one who suggested and chose the pair I ended up walking out in, and I couldn't be happier. I said it before, and I'll say it again: I love Modern Love. 4-eva. read more

Came here for an open trunk show with a friend. Was not sure what to expect but boy, are we glad we came! The boutique was full of creative crafted decorations, pops of color, glamour, and vintage. The music was cool with a mix of old school hip hop and other variety. There was a flow of two signature mixed drinks being served all night. The bartender grew and picked the herbs for garnishes from her OWN garden, love! The open trunk show was showcasing a local providence jewelry designer. Fabulous! Loved everything about the event and so glad it was here. At the end of the night, Modern Love raffled off $300 worth of things all put together in a basket. Love this place, always fun. read more

Lovely boutique with a great selection of seasonally trendy finds. I was lucky enough to find this shop still open one Thursday evening around 7, and popped in to snag a great skirt that I can't wait to break out this spring, as well as a pair of glam gold hoops. I like that Modern Love has an eclectic and colorful collection, clearly the buyer has their eye on whats happening on the high streets of our slightly larger neighboring cities. Scattered throughout out the shop is a great selection of jewelry and accessories, as well as fantastic shoes to round off your outfit. Added bonus - 10% off when you check in! I adore Modern Love. First off it is directly contributing to the re-energation of Downcity and the Westminster shopping district. Inside it is attached to the fashion forward Queen of Hearts (Karen's original store) and the Love displays some of the most interesting, cool, and (believe it or not) comfortable soles and heels around! I don't think it technically is - but it feels as thought it is - a curated shoe and accessory emporium. The pieces are just so carefully and intentionally selected and displayed. Impressive and well-made brands like Seychelle's (did I mention comfortable?) and Frye. For the level of quality - nothing is overly expensive, and if you wait there may be an excellent sale around the corner. Browse through hosiery, jewelry, headbands, hats, gloves and socks. Nothing is status quo. My personal style is somewhat... classic? Whatever you may call it, it would never be considered 'edgy', yet I still always find something that I love and works with my personal style. It is easy to find unique pieces to make your own. They are connected to Queen of Hearts and share some of the same jewelry lines. First of all, I'm a bit of a Bowie junkie so I was immediately interested in this shop. I wanted to really love it, with the cute greeting cards and the disproportionate amount of sunglasses on display. But I only kind of like Modern Love. It's possible that my opinion is a bit tainted, because I've always left empty handed, but maybe that's saying something... The shoes they have are mostly cute and comfy looking, but they all seem to be made for those girls who were blessed with very slim feet (read: not me). Most of the jewelry is nice, although the pieces I've tried just look awkward on me. For instance, there was a compass on a thin chain that I tried on and it ended up looking a little too Flavor Flav for me. The clothes, while well made, are just a bit too much for me. I end up feeling a little ridiculous in clothes like that. I would have loved this store when I was about 16, but maybe I'm just over it now. The owner, Karen, is super nice though. Also, some of the clothes are made in the store, which is also nice. So maybe Modern Love isn't for me, but I would encourage you to stop by and see if it might be for you. read more

Let me begin by I love the selection of items in this store. The prices range from decent to expensive. It's nice to have boutique that makes things accessible to people. I would have given this 4 stars had I had a good experience buying. It was so bad I was tempted to give this 2 stars but the fabulousness of the store evened it out. The owner lacks genuine customer service skills. A fake smile and BS just to make a sale makes me not want to purchase anymore. Furthermore, telling someone your return policy is one thing and then next time they come in because something didn't fit telling them it's a different policy is bad business. Doing it all with attitude doesn't help. Her workers are gems though, very helpful, polite and able to answer questions. Great store but deal with the owner at your own risk... maybe she was having a bad day, I don't know, I'll give it one more try. read more

I truly enjoy shopping at Modern Love and Queen of Hearts. Pretty much every time I visit, I end up leaving with at least one new wardrobe staple, either a new pair of shoes or an adorable dress. While it isn't always "mall-store-cheap", the quality of the merchandise is DEFINITELY reflected in the price.The merchandise is competitively priced, often a little less expensive than the same merchandise on-line through a different store. Every dress or pair of shoes that I have gotten there is still a go-to in my wardrobe, after many wears. They also ALWAYS have amazing sales, pushing merchandise from the current season to make room for new treats. Along with the great quality and selection, the ladies who work there are wonderful! They are helpful and honest, and not just trying to "make the sale." I know that these ladies love the clothes and shoes because I see them wearing them outside of work! Now I'm gonna get cheesy...I honestly feel a sense of community when I go into Queen of Hearts and Modern Love. I have had complete strangers who do not work at the store squeal in delight when I come out of the dressing room to get feedback on whichever dress I'm trying on. This is my kind of store. They have everything from vintage-inspired frocks to earrings, to some home stuff, and then next door are fab shoes, bags, accessories and more! I love the style and that the prices are not too out of bounds for your average working girl. I noticed they were offering a 10% discount to Yelpers and even though it expired, they graciously offered to redeem it for me anyway. I wasn't able to use it because the stuff I purchased was on sale, but still---the stuff I got was on sale and they would have done so for me if it weren't. Nice! I couldn't believe the make-your-own earring bar, and there were all sorts of locally-made earrings and other pieces that were uber cool. They also had some HOBO bags that I haven't even seen in department stores. The staff were so friendly and cool that I truly felt at home, something that I don't always feel in NYC. So, I never write reviews unless my experience was really something to write about. And unfortunately, this one was a turn for the worse. For Christmas I wanted this beautiful pair of frye boots that I found on the Neiman Marcus website. So my thoughtful boyfriend decided he was going to buy them for me. But instead of ordering off Neiman Marcus, my mom convinced him to go locally, to a small business, to support small business owners. He was a little skeptical but went nonetheless. They didn't have the boots I wanted in stock, so they became a special order. When I received the boots on Christmas Eve, they were a size 7, in a 71/2 box( I needed a size 7). So I immediately went to the store to see what they could do for me. Because this was a manufacturer mistake, they were able to exchange and I decided on a size 8, just to have some extra room. They told me to call them after Christmas, to see when the ordered would be coming in. When I called not only did the women on the phone give me attitude about it, she told me she wouldn't be able to order them until January 2nd. And hung up in my face. At this point i wanted to just return them and get the money back and order them from Neiman Marcus, where none of this would have happened, and if it did, they would fix it with a smile. But that's besides the point, because I COULDN'T return them even if I wanted to. Because they have a no cash back policy. So much to my dismay, they finally ordered the boots. I go and pick them up, again they are a 7 in a 7 1/2 box!! I thought i was hallucinating. And on top of all this trouble I went through, the owner continued to give me and my boyfriend attitude, as if we were beneath the people she deals with on a daily basis (although the boots he ordered were 600$). So needless to say, 3 weeks later I finally received my size 8 boots, with my mothers help because everyone in the store seemed to not care what I had to say. So it's a shame, because I really liked the funky stuff they have in this store, but I will never shop here ever again. read more

Modern Love carries some of my favorite brands of shoes but I never seem to walk away with anything of interest. Their customer service is atrocious. I have walked into this store with barely a greeting but glares are plentiful especially from the owner Karen Beebe. They are barely attentive and spend more time chatting to each other than attending to customers. It's a nice store with bad service. read more

I recently purchased a pair of Poetic Licence shoes wherein I tried to return and/or exchange them without success. I wanted to return the shoes because the color wasn't as I expected. Even though I viewed the color in the store, the color looked much different when I brought the shoes home. I was told I could not return, exchange or even receive a store credit because they were special oder. (The shoe size ordered was a 6 1/2; which surely would sell without any problem.) I was never told that because this was a special order a return, exchange or store credit would not be issued. The return policy was not indicated anywhere on the order slip, (nor is it posted anywhere in store that I noticed) though the store receipt says "Returns for store credit only and valid within two weeks of original purchase." (Yes, I returned to the store just a week after purchase.) I should also mention that the owner, Karen, personally placed my order and did not advise me of the return policy. Though I really love both Modern Love and Queen of Hearts, I am disappointed that I was at the very least unable to receive a store credit. I was not AT ALL difficult and would have graciously accepted a store credit. I realize Modern Love is a small business, and that is exactly the reason why I am surprised by the lack of pleasing me as a customer. I will keep my $119 shoes, but cannot say that I will be shopping at Modern Love, or Queen of Hearts again. read more
