This place needs to get its act together. I called twice on two separate days and spoke to two separate people to "discuss my Christmas Eve order. They both assured me that my order could be charged to my credit card and they would run my order out to me once I was in line outside. I called while in line and was told "I'm sorry but we're not going to do that. The person you spoke to was mistaken". The people in front and behind me in line were also told the same. I've been ordering Ricotta pie every Christmas Eve from Modern for over 20 years but this will be my last. read more

So first we attempted to go to the location in the North End and the line was craaaazy. Okay to be honest we wanted to go to Mike's but I have never seen such a long line so we decided to go to Modern instead. Usually less crowded right? But no, they also had a loooong line. We waited for a while before I made the executive decision that we should just go to the one in Medford. Hey, we had a car and free time so why not. We filled a pastry box with different treats and it only cost $18. Sweet. Literally and figuratively. We got a cannoli, german chocolate cake, a black and white cookie, oreo cake and cheesecake. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and by the next day we had barely eaten anything from the box. It used to be that getting the best cannoli in the world meant hauling my sorry behind all the way to the Modern Pastry shop in the North End and spending an hour looking for parking -- but it was worth it. Imagine my delight when I learned there was another one in MEDFORD!!! And the cannoli are -- THE SAME (= amazing, heavenly, unbelievable). Easy parking, yes -- but don't be surprised if there's a line here, too -- people coming in in droves to pick up the customized cakes they've ordered. Nevertheless, despite the crowds and all, the staff (who all look to be 13-17 years old!) are always EXTREMELY friendly, happy to make special requests, coffee, etc. The place is clean, the coffee is very good, the cannoli (and the lobster tails) are AMAZING, the location is extremely convenient from the northern burbs. read more

If you think that having "the other cannoli" (which is located right across from this bakery in the North End location) is the best cannoli you ever had? Think again - you haven't obviously tried Modern Pastry's ricotta filled cannoli. It is the best cannoli you will ever have (at least in the United States). It always fresh since they make it in small batches. The quality of the ricotta and the flavors are spot on. And their torone is the best. Like the cannoli it always fresh, it has more chewiness to it but softer. The nuts are high quality. The torone with the hazelnut coating is another caterory on its own. Everytime I come down to Boston I look forward for one thing "Cannolis" Modern pastry will always be my #1. I always order the plain with ricotta cheese dipped in chocolate chips and almonds. The whoopie pie I bought today was inedible -- clearly had been frozen then defrosted because the cake was a little cool and dry, the vanilla frosting was like cheap grocery store frosting and the chocolate was low quality and tasteless. I took one bite then threw the entire pastry away rather than eat something so gross. Frankly, I knew I wasn't going to get anything worthwhile the moment I walked in the shop because I could just tell by looking at the sweets that they were not well made food, but I tried a simple whoopie pie because I had heard of their reputation and the sweet was actually WORSE than I had imagined. I've always liked going to the North End to get delicious Italian pastries, but I lack the motivation to travel all of the way into the city just to wait in long lines for sweet confections anymore. So, you can imagine my excitement that Medford Square had it's very own Modern Pastry, just around the corner from my place, and with better prices to boot. The store front has a nice selection of both French and Italian pastries, but on this particular visit I ordered some red velvet cupcakes, chocolate oat cookies, and rainbow cookies for my birthday. The cupcakes were moist and fluffy, and the frosting was rich and sweet...just the way I like them. Although I still love the rainbow cookies from Mike's Pastry better, Modern does make a good version too, covered in chocolate sprinkles. Now all I have to do is try out the cannoli's to see what all of the fuss is about. If you find yourself having some time to lazy about the store, take the opportunity to pull up a chair, get a hot drink, and watch the world go by in the window. It's a nice spot to sit with a friend for a quick breakfast or afternoon treat. read more

We have been going here for years, and I've sent all my friends. Their cannolos are way better than Mike's. Get the chocolate dipped shell with ricotta filling and chocolate chips. You can't go wrong. The other pastries and desserts are good too, but it's really the cannolis you should be going for. It's probably the only place in the country that I eat canonolis. I've had cannoli's and Pizza from this Modern location before but was always picked up by my wife so it was my 1st stop in this one. The only bad thing about it is the parking like all of Medford Square it's all metered and u will get tagged the meter maids seem to be everywhere. I was lucky it was a Sunday and I parked on Forrest street no meter in effect so parked in no parking zone seeing it was Sunday. That said even with meters in effect it is definitely worth it without a doubt. I went in for some Christmas desserts for both families mine and the in laws. I love Banana Cream pie so I got 2 one for each family and I have to say I've gotten Banana Cream pies from every single bakery around and as of now Modern is my go to for that for sure my brother in law agrees also. Got 2 dozen cannoli's 12 chocolate chip 12 regular split 6 & 6 brought dozen to each family they were a big hit. Also got an Apple crisp also a big hit everything was delicious. Now the service I was waited on by a Shannon a very pleasant young lady who actually suggested the Apple Crisp and I'm so glad she did. She was very pleasant and helpful even offered to help me carry stuff to car which I thought was very kind. They seem to appreciate your business here and produce a superior product than what I've tried and will now be my bakery for all occasions. Love the Sfogliatella!!! Like the similar Lobster Tail (alternate filling, slight shape diff.) They do a great job with the other Italian pastry standards (which personally are not my favorite ethnicity of pastries but recognize the quality hear.) Like the much easier location here then the North End. I would wait to when I could drive past here instead of going to the Pastry places closer by in Somerville as I'd give all the other Italian pastry joints in Somerville/Medford no more than 3 stars. read more

So a few things, modern pastry had been my go to since working at Strega. Their strawberry cheesecake and strawberry shortcake were pretty top notch. However my last few experiences after buying cake for my mom and sister were terrible. The rum cake I bought for my mom instead of tasting the way it should, it tastes like nail polish remover. Soaked up all the rum and it was soggy and really REALLY bad. The outside appearance was beautiful, but literally I can't stress enough to avoid it. In addition, recently I decided to give them another go because I just trusted Modern pastry to believe it was just a single bad cake. NOPE. Got a vanilla cake in vanilla frosting and the white chocolate decorations and frosting tasted like latex gloves. Frosting was heavy, felt like I was biting into expired - over refrigerated fondant. Think of storing food without properly wrapping it and it taste like old air. (Sense and taste go hand and hand if you're wondering why my description is so specific) it pains me because I will never recommend trying any of their cakes besides the cheesecake. I should've went to stop and shop to buy it instead tbh. However their cannoli's are still okay. BUT I AINT PLAYING. Please consider when buying a cake for a love ones. Modern Pastry is one of two really famous pastry shops from Boston's North End, both specializing in cannoli and similarly creamy pastries. I came here at around 9:30am on a Sunday, looking for a half dozen croissants. They were cleaned out of croissants, though, except for a lonely-looking nutella number. So we opted for a "lobster tail," some other thing filled with lemon-spice custard, and an elephant ear. The lobster tail was a gargantuan pastry, filled on the spot with chantilly cream, and it was tasty and dangerous. The lemon custard thing was even better. We guessed that the filling was made from ricotta. It had a firm, baked sort of texture and was really quite satisfying. The elephant ear was nothing special. All in all, these were pretty good, although certainly I've had better. I give it the fourth star because I know the cannoli are excellent (although I have not had one in years). read more

I ordered a chocolate birthday cake and when I picked it up the next day, it was way bigger than I thought it was going to be. (This was a good thing.) ON Hanover busy street in North End you'll find Modern pastry usually with a small line outside but well worth the wait. The have an excellent choice of Italian pastries including, canollis, eclairs, tiramisu, rum cake, lemon tartes, italian cookies, delicious strawberry shortcake and cheesecake, napoleans....A LOT! Well at 7 mths pregnant with a sweet tooth I wanted all of it but we settled to share chocolate rum cake, Napoleon, and a canolli with chocolate shell. I ate slowly to savor every single bite hoping the end wouldn't be near! It was just fantastic! I love this small little pastry shop in North End. I definitely will be going back soon. YUM! Great pastries. I have such a hard time choosing what to get, because everything looks so delicious. I'm not a big cannoli lover, but my bf is and liked the choc dipped w choc chips. I got a red velvet cupcake. It was tasty, but the frosting to cupcake ratio was all wrong. I like frosting w every bite of cupcake, but they only put a circle of frosting in the middle of the cupcake. While the cupcake was moist and good, after I finished the frosting, I still had half a cupcake left, which I ended up throwing out. I've also tried their mini chocolate covered cheesecake. I was driving through Medford yesterday, and I thought that perhaps I was just hungry and seeing an Oasis in the desert. But no, there it was. . . a second location of Modern Pastry. Beautiful. I was able to park right up front with no quarters needed. Free parking. What? Brilliant. There was no wait around lunchtime. The woman was working the counter was super-friendly while I ordered a half pound of almond biscotti. Best of all, the biscotti were wrapped in an old-fashioned bakery box with the red string. The biscotti were perfectly cooked. They were crispy, sweet, but not too sweet, and the perfect complement to a cup of coffee. And with no crazy wait and ample parking day or night, I will definitely be back. read more

It is dangerous that this Modern is right next to my beloved Elizabeth Grady! This shop is actually tolerable, unlike the one in the North End that you wouldn't catch me waiting in that obscene line for any amount of money. The place is clean, spacious, and has TONS of goodies! I got a whoopie pie (huge and filled with delicious frosting), an apple wedge for the fiancee (he said it was very good), a few florentines (the best florentine I've ever had hands down!), and a huge bag of breadcrumbs for $1. Waited in a very long line for a cannoli and some other treats. The let down is that maybe it's not worth the nearly hour long wait on a sunny saturday in February. The cannoli was good and you're damn right I finished it but it left me trying to remember why I almost died and went to heaven the last time I had one. Over a year and half ago from Mike's Pastry. I'll have to taste test them side by side sometime, but I have a feeling that I really liked the creaminess of Mike's ricotta. This one was less creamy BUT piped in fresh when you order. This pastry shop that also does fudge is on a busy busy street in Medford. The one thing that allowed me to stop was a parking spot that let me stay longer than 10 minutes - because it really takes more than 10 minutes for a newbie to soak in all that is this shop. So what did I order... Ricotta Pie - very small slice, kinda dry but relatively good. Apple Turnover *gasp* - I gasp because I don't like apples - but I always try Apple Turnovers - wasn't flaky at all so I wasn't impressed Sicilian slice -kinda - not a crusty gorgeously cheesy mess that I'm used to but more like thick pastry crust that looked like sliced bread? - yea kinda different but not bad when it has pepperoni on it - but seriously, what isn't? Broccoli stuffed breadie thing - VERY GOOD - loved that - was totally sad that I couldn't eat it all because I wanted to share it with hubbie. Rice Ball - Hubbie said that there was some kind of meat and a couple sweet peas in the middle and at first he was totally bummed that there was no sauce on it - he's a saucy kinda guy - but after eating (which I got none) he liked it. Went to this place because the line seemed slightly shorter than the one at Mike's Pastry. However, the counter area and interior is actually much smaller than the one at Mike's, so today it still took a 15 minute wait to get your order. You get a choice of shells and filling for the cannoli, and they fill the shells on the spot. I think this actually contributes to the shell's being crispier because they are freshly filled. I got a chocolate dipped ricotta cheese cannoli, which was excellent and rich. I can't really decide whether it is better or worse than Mike's. Other items: Pine-nut topped macaroon: Very good, but quite sweet- you can't eat too many of these at once. The outside is chewy but the interior is very soft and amazing. Napoleon: Pastry layered with custard-like cream and topped with frosting. Decent, but again very sweet. I prefer lighter Napoleons that use more creamy/milky cream. Red velvet cupcake: Ok, this one is actually amazing. The cake is very moist, and has just the hint of chocolate. The cream cheese frosting is sooo good. I've never really liked cream cheese frosting (or frosting in general), but this one has just the right amount of cheese taste. I was surprised it was so good. read more

I've had a few things there and overall they are pretty good. Avoid the cupcakes though. The cake was bland and unflavorful and the frosting tasted like cheap grocery store frosting. I love Modern, and I love this location since it's removed from the touristy craziness that engulfs North End. The cannolis here are lightyears better than Mike's, as they're filled to order. I've also tried the lobster tail, napolean, nougat, a variety of cookies ( the florentines are sooo good), ricotta pie, gingerbread, and zeppoles. The only things I haven't been as crazy about have been the frosted gingerbread cookies and an orange liquor flavored pastry (blocking on the name). But really, you can't go wrong and the staff is always very friendly and willing to help. read more

The random desserts that temp me that I didn't know I wanted until I walked in and saw them on display are great. Hmm... it seems like everybody is trying to rate the Modern Pastry that's in the North End. I would say that the North End one is an entire star better this this location. Even though I'm sure they use the same recipe's, it seems like the pastries here were not baked with as much care as the other one. The cakes here are definitely above average. They have a large variety of flavors and combinations. Their cannoli's are only ok because their cream wasn't fantastic. The wait can be a little long sometimes, but the turn around is pretty quick. A bit too pricy to be worth the consistent trip for a bake treat trip. read more

Let me start by saying that I LOVE apple. Apple everything! Especially during peak apple season when you can only hope places take advantage of prime picking time. This leads me to Modern... I have only tried one thing from this bakery and it was a slice of apple tart. My first thought was "Oh no, what have I done?" and my second thought was "oh dear, what have THEY done!?" The crust was extremely soggy and it had a very floury texture. It almost seemed like it was under baked initially and then the moisture from the apples just caused it to disintegrate into a goo... Sounds unpleasant right? So how did it pull off two stars? The apples were actually pretty good. I picked them off and ate them like the baked apples they were. I'd eat a whole bowl of them as long as no crust is involved. This experience leaves me with a lonely 2 stars because meh, I've experienced better. read more

Very poor service, I'm never buying from here again. I went in for the first time and I asked for chocolate chip cannolis and I mentioned that I wanted vanilla, assuming the cashier would return with vanilla ricotta cheese. Nope, she returns with vanilla custard and condescendingly tells me that I should have specified what type and expected me to pay and she told me that "vanilla" meant "vanilla custard"- in what world? I'm shocked because I wasn't expecting this behavior but I wasn't in the mood to worsen it. I stand there and stare and she promptly walks back and begrudgingly proceeds to fulfill the correct order. Once she returns, I apologize for my mishap, unnecessarily so and I left without a word. She should have apologized; she works in customer service. One would expect from such a popular chain that they would have standards regarding basic manners, much less assuming orders incorrectly. It looks like I will have to go to another chain that are more courteous to their new customers to fulfill my cannoli or dessert needs. read more

Modern or Mike's it is a debate that goes on and on. First let me say, I love Mike's. I lived in the North End 10 years (moving out in 2011), and I went there probably twice a month. However, my friend and I decided to do a neighborhood blind taste test of all the canollis in bakery shops or cafes. Mike's placed second and to my surprise we both agreed that Modern was the best. I still like Mike's, especially with Chocolate chips, but Modern is definitely delicious. In addition, when they have it, Modern's marzapan is also better than Mike's. Unfortunately, it is often unavailable. The Napolean cake is also quite delicious. In general, I would say that Modern has a bit fancier desserts in their cases than Mike's. My advice would be to go to both sometime during the week before you get dinner. and then try a blind taste test for yourself. Another nice thing about Modern is they have a full liquor license, so you can get some great cordials to go with your dessert or coffee. In general, if you don't plan to try to eat their, go before dinner, not after. It will save you a long wait. read more
