This review is based on their on the strawberry cake. Packing, up charge and additional writing on cake. I've had better for less $. I've been around Everett for my entire life. My family moved here in the 1950's. I rarely give 1 or 2 stars taking into consideration an establishment is having an off day. But this just didn't seem like an off day it seemed more like inexperience, not a great product. A strawberry cake serving 6-12 we picked out was decorated with shaved white and some milk chocolate on the top. The top had 3 very beautiful strawberries on the top. Although the cake presents well. The chocolate is over the top and makes it more sugary. The berries cannot be shared easily without slicing. The top of the cake pretty but not practical for sharing or serving. Writing on the cake was wrong! suppose to be "Happy Birthday Mom", was "Happy Birthday Mama" on a cookie not the cake. Instead, written on a cookie. Then mashed on top of the pretty chocolate and strawberries. It was packed in the box that was partially open because it could not fit properly in the cake box. Clear shipping tape was used to tapped the sides of the box. Photos show what the cake looked like upon opening the box. I was not asked to view the cake just before they taped it. And I didn't remember to ask, that's the baker's role. The whipped cream non dairy frosting was nice, the additional shaved white chocolate on the sides was pretty but too sweet and made the whipped cream not stand out. There was more than enough whipped cream and the ratio to the yellow cake was too much whipped cream. In addition, for a strawberry shortcut or strawberry cake. Stopped into Elm Street bakery today to pick up some pizza bagels. Can't ever go wrong with those. We decided we'd try a couple of pastries while we were there. We picked up a lobster tail, and a Whoopie pie. The cream inside the lobster tail tasted like medicine. Completely inedible. We also chose a powdered sugar covered whippy pie, one of our favorites. The Whoopie pie cake was extremely extremely dry and literally fell apart as I cut into it with a fork. Sad to say, but we won't be back. I use Elm St. for all traditional Italian products that I don't want to bake myself and I use them for wedding cookie trays. I am not in the bakery every week, but it is the bakery I prefer to use rather than those North End bakeries that are overpriced and not better in any way. Having lived in Boston's North End for 15 years, I feel very comfortable saying that. Today reminded me again why I like Elm St. I am sending a homemade cake to a friend in Miami who is very ill. Her grandchildren are flying to see her and are leaving tomorrow. I made her favorite Sour Cream Coffee Cake, and thought it might be helpful to have a cake box to take to the airport rather than squishing the cake in a bag. I stopped in at Elm St. to ask if they would sell me a box. I know they don't sell boxes, but I thought they might sell me one; I explained the circumstances. Two employees turned me away, telling me that they didn't sell boxes. No flexibility; no compassion. Then, one spoke to the owner to further assure me that that was their policy; I was on my way out of the store when the owner called me back and asked me what size box I needed. Thank God there are people like him doing business today..... A little humanity goes a long way ...... Not only does the man make superb pastries and pizza!, but he has a good heart! My friend picked up some savory and sweet treats on a Thursday morning. We got to try their pizza squares, pizza bagels, blueberry muffins, and an assortment of pastries. Everything is freshly prepared and tastes great! As someone who believes crusts can be a hit or miss on pizzas, this one was certainly a hit for me. I was so embarrassed of the cake. It was for my aunt and uncles 50th anniversary. I wanted a cascade down the side of the cake. I like to go to Elm Street Bakery because it's close to home, and I've been going here for a while. However, today March 6 at approximately 5:30 P.M I saw them handle food with the same gloves they used to count money. This neighborhood bakery is a little bit of the North End in Everett. The freshly baked bread is delicious! Authentic Italian pastries are delectable, as are their pies. We got lemon meringue today. The tiramisu is not my favorite but still tasty. Try the ricotta-filled Zeppole while they have them. The bakery clerks answer questions and are patient while you choose your baked goods. I've been coming here since I was a kid and for one thing and one thing only. THEIR PIES!! A classic is always an apple pie, but personally I LOVE their blueberry pie. Their almond and pistachio cookies are really good too. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Bought half moons and they were old stale and dry. The frosting was so hard. If you don't buy the Italian pastries or cakes, chances are the pastry is old. I used to love the cookies, but lately they have been stale. Maybe they need to make less to sell faster. I will use caution with what I buy. Not sure what happened. The staff is absolutely amazing. The boss in the building Al is an absolute retard. Allow me to explain I have been going to this Bakery my entire life. It was very simple instructions and a mistake was made. But that's perfectly fine mistakes will happen. They are what they are. When I called after the cake was picked up by a family member when I called to talk about the mistake the ownerAl who took my order, got on the phone with me and made it like it was my mistake. He was very rude even hung up on me. He acted like I don't know how to spell my son's name. I don't know my son's favorite color and I didn't know what year my son turned. Everything was a mistake the year of his birthday, his name and no color green whatsoever. I will continue to go to this bakery because it is my go to. So after reading reviews here I decided the other day to stop in... Now I have lived in Everett all my life & the fam goes to Elm Street for everything, But I guess I just never thought about going just because... So I stopped in & right away was smiling - the smell is soo nice! I had to wait a while to place my order, the man in front of me was getting 12 of everything they make (seriously - I was like OK dude, really...) and the other woman working was on the phone taking a large order... but it was good, it gave me time to look around & also after hearing him pick things, I learned names for things I never knew... So it was finally my turn & I knew I was going to get cupcakes, some HUGE M&M Cookies... a few little things from the Fridge section... So being the non pastry expert I felt kinda dumb asking, "Whats that & Whats this", but the woman helping me was the cutest, kindest little thing... She gave me some advice, told me what everything was... She was the greatest & didnt make me feel as if I was a pain and by this time there was a long line behind me! All my little goodies only cost me $13 ... and this begins a beautiful friendship! I want to go back & try more things, Im def gonna get some Calzones & cannolis next time... But for this trip we got Eclairs (Have loved forever) and they werent the best I have ever had but they were pretty good... Cream Puffs - OMG.. I LOVE Cream Puffs and these ones were absolutely delightful - the fresh cream was soo sweet & perfect! Will DEF get again! During my visit in Boston, I came over to Everett to meet a friend who lives here and stopped at Elm St Bakery for a quick snack. I wasn't quite sure what to get, but several people in line in front of me kept ordering a slice of the pizza ghena (I think that's how it was spelled) which was a lot like a huge, thick quiche with a fluffy pie-like crust around the entire thing. Since I was staying at a cheap AirBnB for the weekend, I couldn't warm it up, which would've been SO GOOD for a cold Massachusetts day but it was still super tasty! Don't know how I haven't reviewed this place yet.First of all I'd imagine inside of Elm Street is what heaven would smell like. They have a wide selection even though it's a small bakery. They are very affordable. In terms of customer service they are awesome, even in the afternoon when most of the staff are teenagers the customer service is still on point. I think this bakery is worth going out of your way for. I may be bias as my family has been going there for years. We get all of our pies there for Thanksgiving, we also love ordering a cheesecake topped with assortment of fruits for other events. I also go every once in a while and get half a dozen of their mini cakes. My favorites are their mini red velvet cake which is rich and moist with awesome frosting, their strawberry cheesecake which has the just the right amount of tart to go with their simple and fresh strawberry on top, the carrot cake again the cream cheese frosting is perfect, the moistness of the cake perfect! I also love their cupcakes. PS: I also get their calzones and pizza, I will admit I don't like it as much as their bread and pastry's but it tends to be simple and hearty and good. read more
