Modern Piano Moving did not disappoint. From the easy and efficient booking of the move with price quotes and timeframes to the prompt communications during the pick up and delivery to the great care during the physical move, Modern Piano Moving more than exceeded our expectations. We were not in a hurry so that did help but they were very timely and picked up and delivered well within the time frames estimated. They did an excellent job of shipping my baby grand. The breakdown, packing and move out was done exactly as it should. They stayed in touch with me during the time it was shipping and gave me a 48 hour notice as well as a 1 hour notice of arrival. On arrival, they had everything in, unpacked, inspected, assembled and in place in a very reasonable time. Not a single scratch, ding or otherwise. The piano involved is an Steinway upright piano made for the Prussian Palace with very high sound quality. It is aged but in excellent condition, well-conditioned and well-tune. It is a gift from a family of piano players with a nominal sales price of $10K. The true value of it is far beyond that. The piano is not hard to move. It has been moved from the auction house with no issues. It is not hard to move pianos in and out of this house. At least 10 pianos have been moved in and out of this house without issues. Modern Piano Moving is contracted to move this piano from the house of our child's piano teacher in Georgia to our house in California. The move happened in December1, 2017. The piano teacher complained that the moving board that workers brought in is too small to move a piano, the wheel on that moving board is too small, and the staff consisted of only two workers instead of the industry standard of 3. The piano almost bumped into the wall while the moving workers struggle to keep the piano on the small moving board. On January 10, 2018, we receive a notice by Angie from Modern Piano Moving that the "When the piano was loaded for delivery there was a glued joint on the key cover that failed. It isn't broken, but the delivery crew left your key cover in our warehouse for repairs." We consulted with the original owner, who told us that there should be no glue in the cover, which is a good solid piece of wood. We immediately demanded Modern Piano Moving to return the cover without doing anything on it and we made the same request multiple times directly to its owner, Russ Vitt. Modern Piano Moving still has not returned the key board cover. on January 11, 2018, the piano without the key board cover was delivered, with more evidence of gross negligence. The keys were broken, the leg supporting the keyboard is broken, debris were found inside the keyboard, the keys are out of tune. We emailed repair request immediately and Modern Piano Moving promised to "everything taken care of to your satisfaction." On January 22, the owner of Modern Piano Moving email us: "I am putting the claim on hold until you respond with answers to my questions. Do you understand that?". The questions he demands answer is why the original owners complained that the crew who picked up the piano are not professional. I filed a complaint to the Better Business Bureau, and almost immediately, Modern Piano Moving started to ship back the key board cover to me. When it arrived, the one piece of beautiful wood with fine texture is completely covered by a layer of cheap coarse material. Namely, you cannot see the wood any more, instead, you can only see a layer of cheap material with dents, creases, uneven surface and uneven paint. The layer seems quite thick, it is not clear how much of the high quality wood has to be grind off to make room for the cheap material. Please notice that trees grow naturally and slowly at the time the piano was made. Wood of the same quality is very difficult to find now. Namely, the beautiful one piece of wood is now completely covered by a layer of cheap material. Moreover, part of the layer is bulging out, as if gas between the cheap layer and the beautiful wood is accumulating. I am worried that the cheap layer by Modern Piano Moving may prevent moisture from getting out, which would result in the original high quality wood to rot inside! For all the other damages (broken keys, broken legs, etc.), Modern Piano Mover has done nothing about them, while the repair requests were made the same night the piano was delivered, many months ago. read more

I contacted a local piano moving company (not one that does long distance moves themselves) and they said they contract all their cross country moves through Modern Piano. They also confirmed that the price I was quoted was reasonable. I got great communication from the company, calls before pick up and drop off, confirmation emails, and timing updates. They give you a multi-day window when you contract with them, and give you a more exact time as they get closer to the actual date. This is not a 'wait at home for 12 hours for the cable company' thing, they gave me a pretty narrow window once we got within a day of the actual pickup. The movers at both ends were professional and careful, the piano was wrapped well and moved carefully. They even fixed a loose bench leg when they delivered it. They're a well run outfit, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to a friend. read more

We used Modern Piano to move my mother's old Steinway upright from NE Ohio to my daughter's new house in Nashville, TN. We were extremely pleased with the outcome. After doing some research, we chose Modern because they had the best reputation and the lowest price. They took very good care of the old piano. Due to personal travel and other readiness issues at the new house, we asked Modern to delay delivering the piano. So they stored it in their climate-controlled warehouse for a month -- at no extra charge -- and delivered it when we were ready. Workers were friendly and efficient at both ends. I would use them again and would definitely recommend them to others. read more

They claim to be professionals, but I think a more accurate description is full-time amateurs. My upright piano was damaged TWICE during one move. Incident #1: They dropped my piano, right in front of my eyes, while going down my front steps. The piano fell on its bottom corner on a hard stone walkway and then went on its back and flattened some bushes. The mover's arm got stuck under it after it fell, and he was in a lot of pain. He was lucky not to have been injured. One could say that accidents happen, but I've watched real professionals move pianos before, and these guys failed to use industry standard best practices, such as shoulder or wrist straps. A truck ramp would have worked very well for that set of steps. But no, these guys had to muscle it without any special gear and without stopping to take a break, and sure enough, it was a total fail. Also, this was near 11pm, when they had clearly been working all day and were exhausted. I inspected the piano in the dark and found that one corner was smashed, but I didn't know if perhaps something else was damaged. Now if you were a piano moving company, and this happened, how would you treat your customer? Personally, I would bend over backwards to fix the piano and waive the shipping fee. Here's how these guys handled the situation.... First phone call was from their payment department, complaining that my credit card didn't go through. As much as I'd like to claim that I brilliantly gave them a wrong cc number before the move, in reality, it was just a mistake. Nevertheless, a very lucky mistake, because now I had some leverage. I simply told the lady that my piano was damaged and refused to give my cc number. I can only imagine how livid I would have been to see my credit card getting charged full price after what happened, which is what they intended to do. Next call was from a different lady to discuss how the piano would be repaired and inspected. They sent the piano for repair to a technician and had agreed to provide me an inspection report. It's not clear that the technician was given the full story about what happened, but he did repair the damaged corner. When I asked them for an inspection report, they gave me a run-around story that everything else seemed fine and that a full inspection would be done after payment and final delivery. I insisted to speak with the technician, and then found out that he had discovered additional damage when he was working on the piano. Good thing I insisted. Would it have been so difficult for them to ask him: "Hey, did you notice anything else broken during your inspection? You do know it was dropped, right?" It's pretty clear they acted to minimize the possibility of discovering any additional problems. At some point, Derek got involved, and he was both very responsive and did a good job of negotiating a settlement so that the piano could get delivered. However... Incident #2: After the piano arrived at its final destination, additional damage was discovered. Somehow they managed to bend the sustain pedal. It must have happened after the piano was repaired for the first damage, since the technician had not reported it. This is a horrible company. Just avoid them. Another reviewer described a way to do this which involves hiring local movers on both ends of the move. If I ever had to do this again, I would take that advice. read more

Modern Piano Moving picked up my baby grand and seemed to do a good job wrapping and moving it. (I haven't been able to schedule delivery yet, so the job is only half complete.) The problem is communication with the dispatch department. When I called to set up the delivery date, I was given a window of five days, three weeks out. When the five day window had passed I called (had to call twice due to no call-back from them) to see why I hadn't been contacted about delivery. A different dispatcher answered, and told me they don't give time frames in advance (NOT what I was told the first time I called); I would now have to go on a waiting list and it would be 3 to 4 weeks before delivery. (The Missouri storage facility is 71/2 hours drive from where I live....not across the country.) I'm now wondering if this run-around business is to get another month's rent for doing nothing except make me wait for my piano, which should already be here. At the time of writing this, it appears that I'll be waiting about 7 weeks after originally contacting them to schedule delivery. I can't give them more than a 3-star rating at this time. read more

If I could give them 100 stars, I would. This is by far, the best piano movers around. We were moving the piano from Nevada to Los Angeles, and I was given specific pick-up and drop-off dates. The piano was picked up on Friday and delivered on Saturday at the exact times they told me. Not only were the guys who delivered it extremely professional, they were warm and friendly, They took great care of the piano, and when they delivered it, it was in the same condition as when it was picked up ~ it didn't even need to be tuned! First of all the delivery of the piano was a very frustrating experience. They did not have enough people to move the piano, and had to call for additional help. They claimed that they were told that there were stairs leading down to the house, instead of up, and that the stairs were steeper than normal. These are normal steps. I spoke with two different people prior to delivery to confirm that the steps were up into the house. It took almost four hours to get the piano in the house. The movers attempted to move it by themselves several times and dropped the piano on our stairs, and now we have cracks in the piano. I was instructed that someone would call me the next day to arrange to have the piano fixed, and this was not done. The piano was moved one week ago, and I still have not spoken with the claims department to arrange to have the piano fixed. I was also expecting a partial refund of the $1500 that I spent to have the piano moved, but this was not offered unfortunately. I am very upset. My piano is damaged, and this is supposed to be a specialty piano moving company. This is all that they do. I would NOT recommend using this company to move your piano. read more

Modern Piano helped me move my 4x6ft baby grand piano from Fernandina, FL to Atlanta, GA. After doing quite a bit of research to find the right guys to move my piano at the right price, I could not have been happier to find Modern Piano. Not only did their cost-to-ship ($800) beat almost every other quote I got (the only other quote being from a single contractor who had never moved a piano in his life), but the value I got for that cost was unbeatable. They were communicative and responsive - with both myself and my mother who was on the other end of the shipment - every step of the way. They gave appropriate notice and showed up on time. And when the guys finally arrived, but couldn't fit their 18-wheeler through my community gates, they safely rolled my piano all the way down my road, through my gates, and up to my condo at no extra cost. Once in my condo, they were in and out in 15 minutes. Honestly, I was a bit nervous when I decided to ship my piano, but I felt that I could trust my piano in their hands, knowing that Modern Piano's primary business is moving pianos and that they know what they're doing - and they absolutely did not disappoint. Don't believe anything they tell you on the phone. We found out on pickup day that NOTHING is covered on the piano move except damage to the cabinet. Before hiring, get them to fax you the contract they want you to sign on pickup so you know what you are really getting. It's not what they tell you on the phone. Plus after they scratched the heck out of our piano, they sent the same lame-o furniture touch up company a regular mover would send. Nothing but freight hauler who moves nothing but pianos. They wouldn't know a Busendorfer from a dairy cow. Unprofessional. Absolutely unprofessional. Read the "non recommended" reviews at the bottom and decide for yourself what to believe. Whatever Yelp says, it really looks a lot like they are filtering out bad reviews for buying ad space. read more

They moved our prized, restored 1922 Steinway B, and besides having four nicks in it, it was ice cold. I contacted them and they sent me a printout of the fuel used for the cooler, which according to them means there wasn't an issue so they blew me off. My family needed to move my great-grandmother's baby grand piano from California to my house in Georgia. I did not set up the move, but I was the point of contact for the delivery. I am glad we decided to use Modern Piano Moving! They emailed us when the piano was picked up, then called me when the delivery was about two weeks out. They then called two days before to let me know the exact time and date. I requested they call thirty minutes before they arrived, and they happily obliged! These movers were great! I have a Kawaii 6.5 ft grand piano and it arrived in perfect condition. It had to go up 10 steep cement steps to make it into the house, and they made it just fine. If you have a large grand, have someone strong on standby. The one thing that went wrong was they hired an extra temp guy for the day to help push the heavy piano but he didn't show up until later. The movers did a fantastic job with a crazy heavy piano, and I had a neighbor guy who jumped in to help for a second on the steps when it got really difficult. I would give 4 stars for the temp help that can be unreliable, but they deserve to have their rating driven up on yelp because overall they were wonderful at pickup and dropoff and I'm very happy with it! read more

I had collected a number of quotes to move a large upright from NYC to Dallas. Modern Piano Moving was the highest and when I called to ask why their prices were higher than their competitors, they told me that they don't subcontract any of the work. All their employees belong to the company so if a mishap occurs, they take full responsibility since they are the only ones who have touched the piano. Other companies like Walter Piano Transport use subcontractors and sub-subcontractors, and when something goes wrong, they all point fingers at each other. My piano teacher had a horrible experience with Walter. They damaged her new grand piano. I called them to discuss this, hoping they could alleviate my apprehension with using them. They claimed they have no record of her move and this lack of concern made me cross them off my list. High accountability means a lot to me, especially for moving an expensive item halfway across the country. Plus, their ratings are very high so I decided to use Modern. Make sure you ask for military, teacher and senior discounts, too, because with those discounts, Modern Piano Moving is only a few hundred dollars more and so worth it. They did a great job moving the piano. Great communication, the movers were so careful and respectful of my house, and the piano arrived without a scratch. read more

I was planning a move from New Jersey to Florida. I had no idea how to have my baby grand shipped. After much research (and talking to "regular movers who said sure I can ship it and then describing how they do it, horrors!"),I decided to go with Modern Piano. I also had to store the piano for 3 months while my new house was being built. The movers arrived on time and were very careful in the preparation and packing of my piano. I was sad to see my "baby" leave and called a few days later to ask if it was happy in Missouri. The guys that answer the phone are always polite and courteous. The piano arrived in Florida in great shape and the movers took time to position it exactly where I wanted it. The nice surprise is that it is still in pitch and won't need a tuning! I find that hard to believe since it was below freezing when it left in NJ and it spent 3 months in a very cold Missouri. They truly do take care to keep the instruments climate controlled!
