I normally do not write reviews, but I thought it might help others when they are trying to decide who to hire when they need a piano mover. After getting quotes from 3 different companies, I hired Modern Piano to move our grand piano from Florida to Utah in May of 2020, even though they were the most expensive, based on a recommendation from our piano tuner. After doing some research and reading some reviews online about them, I decided to hire them. Here is what they did wrong: - The piano was not delivered in a climate controlled vehicle as promised, but in a U-Haul. - The piano was unloaded and reloaded on multiple vehicles before it was delivered, again contrary to what was promised. - The pedal assembly was missing because they mistakenly unloaded it in Texas. - They took another two weeks to deliver the pedal assembly. - When asked if they would install the pedal assembly, they told us to get a piano tuner to do it. - The screws to attach the pedal assembly were not with it. They were finally found in the piano bench. - They did not keep me informed about the delivery status of the pedal assembly but had to be contacted about it. - A partial refund was not offered. - No one ever responded to my complaints. Summary of my experience: - Their customer service is very poor. - They don't deliver on their promises. - They don't take responsibility for their mistakes. read more

It's time to set the record straight. I found these guys on USHIP (they have near perfect feedback in those reviews) and looked up their contact info on the federal motor carriers/department of transportation website (safer.fmcsa.dot.gov). As you know, their website leads to booking directly through UShip (which will increase your costs by about $500 due to Uship booking fees). I have an original, irreplaceable Steinway Model B Piano worth a small fortune, and Modern Piano moved it from central Florida to the Denver suburbs without a hitch. I was an anxious mess for the duration of the transport, and Steve (the dispatcher I worked with) was absolutely wonderful in communicating updates on the piano's whereabouts and extremely reassuring. The piano was picked up and delivered exactly as contracted. They used appropriate piano moving equipment and excellent moving techniques during pick-up and delivery. And, most importantly, the piano was delivered in PERFECT condition. As an added bonus, Matt (the delivery agent) had a keen eye and made great suggestions on how we could position the piano to make the best use of our space. He did not rush and allowed me ample time to inspect the soundboard, every hammer and pin and play every note. There is always a chance of injury during a long distance move, and that is why I was willing to pay a premium to have a dedicated piano mover with decades of experience move my baby. I will ONLY ever use modern piano moving after this perfect moving experience. PS There were no stickers or any other type of advertising attached to my piano. The guy who left that as part of his feedback appears to have the wrong company. I also simply do not believe some of the feedback left by others - damaged floors and door jams? No way, no how. I have moved my antique baby grand piano 3 times with Modern Piano. I have been extremely satisfied with each move, but this most recent move was fantastic. The movers called to let me know they made it to the area earlier than expected. I was excited to see my piano, but a little reluctant to have them deliver it at that moment, because my very difficult 2-year-old had JUST gone down for a nap. I met them outside and informed them I had a sleeping child near the piano delivery location, and they were extremely understanding. I couldn't believe how quiet they were hauling and setting up the piano!! They went above and beyond by being so considerate to not wake up my daughter. My father was a professional pianist in central Ohio. When he passed away in 1998, I inherited his Steinway, the instrument he played every day. Music, and specifically the piano, was one of the things through which we connected (and continue to connect.) The bidding was simple and clear, the service was quick, every conversation I had with everyone involved was professional and kind, and the piano was picked up and delivered ahead of schedule, in perfect condition. I could not have been happier with the level and quality of communication, nor the skill and demeanor of the awesome guys who navigated a tricky set of turns and stairs to get my dad's piano into our house. Nothing but the highest recs for Modern Piano Moving. They have a Missouri business address, but ship all over the contiguous states. My mother no longer plays (arthritis in her hands) and wanted me to have the family piano... now, this isn't an irreplaceable concert grand or anything, but it is an heirloom upright, and she was worried about it arriving in decent condition after a 1600-mile move. MPM called twice ahead of delivery, once to give me a three-day window (and to ask what day would be most convenient, in case I needed to schedule time off work,) and once the actual delivery was scheduled, to give me a four-hour window for the delivery time. Once the day arrived, they showed up on the stroke of the appointed hour, and quickly unloaded the piano & bench, setting it up, making sure everything was just as it should be. The three movers were nothing but professional & polite. The whole thing was accomplished in about twenty minutes. These guys were great! Pick up in Chicago to drop-off in Portland, OR, they did exactly as they said they would. Everyone we dealt with was professional and helpful. The driver who delivered the piano was great. He even stayed and gave suggestions on placement and then moved it around to show how to display the piano the best way possible. My only suggestion would be to provide periodic updates as to where the piano is while in transit. It's not critical, but provides some additional information as to where the valuable piece is located. read more

I just saw that they misrepresented the situation here. My piano is a rare 1865 Grand Chickering. The amount of money requested by me was simply the amount requested by the Guild in Houston to do a proper repair. In the end, I shipped the lid to them, paid over $1,000 out of pocket to repair the blinds (was not a $300 repair as they claim) and the lid is still cracked, although not as bad as before. I gave up on trying to get back to perfection on the piano but I do acknowledge that they tried. However, they were VERY difficult in this process. read more

Modern Piano just moved my great grandmother's antique upright piano from Illinois to Massachusetts and I couldn't be happier. Once the piano was picked up in Illinois, I had it in Mass. about 1.5 weeks later (much faster than I anticipated). I have used Modern Piano twice. For my first move, I gathered two additional quotes and spoke to all three companies about the logistics, the pickup/delivery timeframes and the environment my piano would be in while in their care. Modern Piano won that move because of the time they took to explain the process and because of the climate controlled truck. I used Modern Piano Moving a few years ago when we shipped my son's Boston upright from Michigan to San Francisco. This piano was on the second floor and the movers had to navigate a long driveway in the middle of winter, PLUS when they got to SF, they had to navigate the very steep hill where my son's apartment is. They did such a great job, OF COURSE we would use them again to move our Steinway baby grand from Michigan to Colorado. The piano arrived last week in perfect condition and even sounds just as good as it did when it left Michigan. The called to let me know their time of arrival,on time, they promptly got to work removing and totally wrapping her up for safety in transport. Modern Piano Moving is one of the few long distance piano movers I could find. Two movers moved an upright piano from Las Vegas to Seattle over a lumpy uphill lawn and up one flight of narrow stairs. They did a great job and took care not to damage the piano maneuvering through awkward turns. They took their time and did not rush through the job. They also delivered an antique piano stool and painting, both of which were delivered in perfect condition. For their service and responsiveness, I felt their price was reasonable. They clearly have an organized tracking system. Reliable communication with customers and also between staff. There are different quotes depending on how flexible you can be in your pick up and delivery windows. I chose the least expensive and was pleasantly surprised by how soon my piano was delivered. I received updates whenever my delivery window got narrowed down, and phone calls 48 hours and 30 minutes before my delivery date and time. read more

My only two "comments" are: 1) It was difficult to pin down the actual date for the pickup, which was important to us due to logistical challenges on our part, and 2) The delivery was delayed and we never got a clear explanation of what happened. I contracted Modern Piano Moving to move my grand piano from Grand Junction, CO to Colorado Springs, CO (about 5 hours away). I chose them as their reviews seemed mostly positive and their price was significantly lower than the competition. You absolutely get what you pay for. I contracted on 7/6/2022 and the quote I received said it would take up to 30 days to pick up the piano and then up to 30 days to deliver the piano. The piano was picked up from the storage facility on 8/15 (missing the 30 days but willing to overlook it) and won't be delivered until 10/25 - 11/2. So it will have taken them just under 5 months start to finish. I had it moved from Houston to Grand Junction using 3 different companies and it only took 3 months. I have reached out multiple times to escalate my complaint to no avail. The salesperson proved unhelpful. They wanted to charge the entire fee up front which I told them I was not comfortable. I have moved the piano across country twice, now and the other companies I have contracted didn't bill until their portion of the move was complete. I was told by the sales person they would bill 1/2 at pickup and the other 1/2 at delivery which I agreed to in writing. They billed the entire fee at pickup. When I reached out to ask why, the salesperson blamed accounting. One huge mistake in conflict resolution is to pass the buck. The proper approach is to take ownership and resolve the problem. Very unhappy with the company and hoping my piano actually arrives when they say it is supposed to. I am getting radio silence. They have zero incentive, they already have my money. If you are moving a piano, use Keyboard Carriers or Keyboard Carriage. They are more reliable. read more

As a professional musician, I know enough to know that you need movers who really care about the instruments they work with. This was a new experience for us. How to move a valuable old player piano from MN to PA. Working with Modern Piano was great. They provided a quote that was accurate. Took care wrapping and loading the piano. And delivered to my daughter's house in PA in the same shape it was when loaded. I can believe I actually thought I could just load it up on a uhaul and do it myself. Plus the cost of the move was not that much more than me renting a uhaul for a one way trip to PA. I don't think I have ever had a company provide this low of a level of service. I worked with them upfront to determine the cost to ship my Disklavier Mark IV piano, a player piano by name. They told me it could take up to a month to arrive at the destination. We are coming up on 2 months and it still has yet to be delivered. We did pre-work for them identifying the number of stairs, the width of the halls, the number of turns, etc. And they do charge for each step and each turn. It did take several weeks to arrive in Chicago, but once there, the movers said the piano was too heavy to move up the stairs. We were never even asked for the weight of the piano and it was never mentioned as a factor. The movers on the other end stated that the extra 300 pounds of the player components would prevent it from being moved via the stairs. There is no way on this planet that the player components mounted under the piano weigh anywhere near 300 pounds. There are 3 components, the size of a stereo receiver and 2 speakers mounted underneath. Any extra 30 or so pounds max. This would have added minimal extra weight. After weeks of "Re-assessing", they decided it can go up the steps, but I am still waiting for a date for this to happen. For the amount of money being spent on this move, we should not be at this point. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!! read more

I was pleased with all aspects of my experience with Modern Piano Movers. First of all they took beautiful care of my pianos during the nearly four weeks it took to get them from rural East Texas to South Florida. The two pianos (77 year-old baby grand and 105 year-old upright) arrived without any evidence of damage or wear and tear from the trip. When their truck broke down en route I was given frequent status updates and they were flexible about working out a new arrival date/ time. BAIT AND SWITCH SCAM on pricing / quotes. I completed the online instant quote questionnaire with accurate city to city information to receive a bid of $1794 to move my great grandmother's baby grand. Eeek! Because of the price, I decided to wait on booking and shop around. After receiving regular follow up emails from them in the subsequent weeks, I received one good one about their big sale - up to 40% discount to book by the end of the year!?!? "Yay, bring me my piano, I can hear Beethoven's 5th now!" I thought. Sale made the price much more reasonable so I responded via email as directed but did not hear back. Sent another email the following week and after several back and forth messages that evaded the questions about the sale, I continued to finalize the info thinking I would see the discount at the end. After a few days of communication, I was ready to book. I was then told the final price is $1766 - WOW what an amazing sale (sarcasm)! A whole 1.5% discount from my original quote and no where near 40% off. Bad business practices to over promise and WAY under deliver and complete waste of time with all the back and forth and follow up emails only to find out at the point of booking that the "sale" was a total scam. Now I am back to the drawing board, sniff sniff. We'll see if I end up finding a cheaper quote, but even if not, I will at least be working with a different company who is straight forward on their pricing and "sales". : ( read more

I wanted to move the family baby grand piano from my 88 yr old Mothers house in Michigan to our house in California, I was very nervous about this process. Daniel at Modern Piano handled my multiple calls and emails over the months with professionalism and confidence, always calming me. This process took months but Mom felt good about the gentlemen who packed up the piano and I appreciated the professionalism with delivery. I received an email days before expected delivery and a phone call to set the date and time exactly, they worked with my schedule very easily. I received a phone call when the truck was 30 minutes away. Best part one of the delivery men serenaded us after our family piano was set up in our home. I like to write reviews to help people make the right choice. In this case, please do yourself a favor and find another company. My story is pretty simple, called to book our piano. I dealt mostly with Misty and Chris and they were very nice. 1. They picked up the piano and they brought the wrong truck for the size. they said they would be pack in 30 minutes, they came back 4 hours later, I had to catch a flight and I had told them all this time frame they needed to be here to load and leave. I had to have a neighbor stay. I had to make it work and call in some favors. I never saw my piano leave. It was a Uhaul trick that came for the pickup. 2. Now delivery time, we live in a condo and you needed to load from the dock, and you would be escorted up. I received a call from the head mover and he asked me for my apt number, I said it will do you no good as you have to be escorted in. Just give our name is all you need. He hung up on me, he calls me back and says he is here and where am I and what is my apt number, so I told him, He was really mad and for no reason. He says I asked people where this piano goes and your address and name no one knows who you are. I said what? you for sure are not in the right place. Follow the directions and go to the loading dock and they will bring you right in. My proof is the people in my building escorted him up, when I answered the door, I simply asked him, is this normal to hang up on your customer? He said do you want this piano or not? I can take it and leave. He actually started to leave with my piano, I called the office and they put out the fire out, I had to contact the security in my building for him not to leave. My concierge people were mortified., They never have seen such unprofessionalism ever. At the end, his kind self came out. I am sure he was a great guy but must have had somethings going on, not the customer's fault. And he changed his tune. He noticed my player was not working. He tried to fix it. He said not to worry the office will bring someone out fix it or replace it. He ended up at the end being ok. 3. The Lady comes out they sent, and says it was not working and broken. You will hear from someone to replace it from the company. 4. I call her to find out when she will come out, Chris calls me and says we cannot pay to replace that part. I explained it all to him and he said given the ordeal you have gone thru, I will push to take care of this for you. He calls me back and said the boss Ross, I think was his name would take my call and he is the one that said no and he gave me his number to call him. I explained it all to him, he said he had the best guy on the job, and he believes his employee and not me. Never a sorry, No kind offer of even caring. I was talking in a nice tone but he was not having anything. I was a bother. I was not important, he took my money, I had the worst service and yet he did what his employee said he would hang up on me as well. Chris was putting out the fire, and this owner thought he would be arrogant to me and just dismiss me. Writing a review is not a threat it is just power to help others. I want people to have good experience with a kind, caring people that care to help and say please and thank you!. I was hoping he would do the right thing! I should have listened to my friend who said don't use them and called Kevin Duffy Piano Movers. Lesson learned! I should also say, when I asked the nice technician if the player could have broken in the move she said, I could say it could have no doubt. read more

I should have checked yelp before using these guys. Damaged my piano en route, and the movers high tailed it before I noticed the damage on the side. Company refused to take any responsibility for it. Ended up costing another 600 bucks to get the side repaired . Also tried to extort another 200 bucks, as they were shipping the piano to me for some sort of "NYC fee" Completely unresponsive, and honestly openly hostile management to my problem. read more

The balance of my requested reimbursement for the repair was sent to me as promised. So I've revised to 2 stars. If they hadn't broken the piano to begin with, would have been 5 stars. If I hadn't had the issue with the reimbursement for repair, would have been 3-4 stars. With the hassle of fighting for the reimbursement (multiple emails, phone calls, pictures, reporting to external review sites, etc), I just can't go higher then 2 stars ('Meh. This company is very disorganized. I am getting my piano moved as I write this review and I've had nothing but trouble with them. I've had to email constantly in order to get updates on their delivery time. I am less than a week away from delivery and I still don't know when it will happen. According to them I will know 1-2 days before delivery when it will actually happen. That's unacceptable. read more
