I can't use the "I'm Indian" card here, because in London (particularly Southall), almost everyone is of the Sub-Continent. In the US, if an Indian eats at an Indian restaurant, it's a good place. In London, if an Indian eats at one, it's because he is eating out. The owner and chef, who's name I still forget used to own another restaurant that I used to visit weekly as a little kid. Then on my last few trips to England, I ate at Nagina almost every night while staying with relatives because it was that good. (And don't hate on London's lack of a restaurant scene, it's one of the best in the world). Ok, on to the good stuff. When you walk in, Nagina has the feel of a dive-y fast food restaurant, but it is in fact a proper restaurant. The kitchen is at the front, and is open air, so you can smell all of the fantastic cooking. The masalas, the simmering sauces and the wealth of flavors that are about to make sweet love to eachother. Yes. It's that good. The Bhindi Masala and Daal Fry were always my favorites. Chicken Tikka Masala, and the Prawn Masala are so clutch too! I still can't get over the fact that the owner is the chef, and makes the food in front of EVERYONE. The kitchen even has a street view, so curious shoppers of Broad Street can judge, become hungry, and eat. Side note, there is a hotel attached to the restaurant. Sometimes, it's cheaper to stay there. It's not fancy, but if you need a place to stay in the Southall area, you can book a room and save some time and money.

Didn't bother to know who got what and splitting the bill had to be done by us with waiters hovering over. No matter how many times we asked and tried to explain, they just didn't want to be helpful at all. I wouldn't go back to eat here and I wouldn't recommend this place to my friends, and that's enough to earn this place one star.

However, there doesn't seem to be the variety as found on Brick Lane. I have to confess that I'm not a local and may not be eating at the best restaurants but so far, I've only had mediocre food in Tooting. I chose Al-Mirage because the waiter was very friendly and came out to talk to me. Sadly they didn't do a thali. Dining on my own meant that I could only sample a few dishes.The lamb bhuna was nice but not outstanding. Perhaps the best thing on my visit was the freshly squeezed juice. My search goes on. I've heard good things about Lahore Tandoori so that may be my next trip in Tooting

I came to this place with two of my friends from Delhi and they were explaining the origin of the food before me: what region it came from, the cultural reasons behind the use of those particular ingredients. It was like an Indian food seminar. The waiters and waitresses were just as knowledgeable as my Indian dining companions. The whole experience was a festival of learning. Their food is delicious. They serve platters with all kinds of yoghurts, nans and house specialties. I got the smallest platter thinking that I could devour it whole in a matter of milliseconds, but surprisingly it was very filling. My other friends who got the larger platter couldn't finish their meal. The place is cheap as well (I spent £11 for my platter and a cold beer), so I would definitely suggest going if you have severe Indian food hankerings.

The streetfood starters seem like a good choice but I've actually tried most of them before and they tend to be on the greasy side. Having been lucky to get an outdoors table on the patio out front (overlooking traffic, but still ...) we decided to leave without ordering. Sushi across the road was the answer on this occasion. The upmarket chains (Wagamama, Dishoom, Busaba Ethai et al) all seem to employ the same interior designers, this branch of Masala Zone was dimly lit with dark tables - very pleasant but formulaic.
