Brick Lane is known for its curry and we were having trouble finding the best place- this restaurant was a nice break from the typical English food and did not disappoint. We started with a couple of beers and samosas (not pictured because hunger). Can't go wrong with any of the beers as they're all pretty light. The samosas were super crunchy and the sauce had a nice kick to it as well. For the entrée, we ordered the lamb curry, butter chicken, naan, and a side of rice. The lamb curry was out of this world delicious, but the butter chicken wasn't our favorite. It was quite velvety, a little too much for our liking, but the chicken in there was delicious. I just like to dip the naan in the sauces and it was too rich for that. But the lamb curry was outstanding and definitely scraped the sauce out with the naan (which was also amazing). We ordered one rice to split between the two dishes which was enough for us, but if you're super hungry you may want to order two. The servers were very attentive, however we were the only people in the restaurant at 3pm on a Tuesday. There was a little bit of a language barrier at first but everything was sorted with no problems. I have celiac and my server moinull pointed out what would be safe for me to eat which seemed like quite a lot for indian cuisine and was very respectful and welcoming. The food was amazing and coming from the Bay Area of California I was told that Indian food here in the UK is like our Mexican food which is always a good sign. I officially believe that. Entered the restaurant expecting classic home crafted Bengali food, but was sharply disappointed. Monsoon was tasty but not the best I've had- maybe it's because it's a different type of indian with of Bangladesh? They didn't want to give me a high percentage off, offered 10% then 15% then I just told them I had a Yelp discount of 20% and that was kind of it. We ordered coconut curry, and then chicken tikka binyari. We also ordered potatoes which came out very salty. The workers were very nice but I thought everything was average. The food here is SO good. Really feels like a hole in the wall place and the street it's on seems a tad dicey, BUT I'm an American so I really don't know if that's true by London standards. This street is filled with a ton of ethnic food, too, so if you can't get a table here there are plenty of other options. Anywho, really delicious food. The service is very fast paced and, brisk? Not rude. But just fast. If you want a leisurely quiet dinner, this is not for you. But if you are feeling Indian, which is supposed to be London's top cuisine, go here!!! read more

I don't know a lot about Indian or Bangladeshi food, so I was pleased to have the opportunity with someone who does...my daughter. We found ourselves by Brick Lane in the Whitechapel area of London and it was pretty clear we were in the epicenter of this cuisine. But which restaurant? We were encouraged to try the Monsoon by a gentlemen out front who also offered a 15% discount...it looked nice and bright and friendly...and had 4 1/2 stars on another site...so what the heck. We went for it. I'm so glad we did! We had an amazing king prawn jalfrezi that was very spicy with chili, peppers and fresh ginger, Murghi Methi Masala that was made with minced chicken and was medium spicy with a lovely flavor, excellent Chicken Biryani, saag paneer so sweet especially when you took a bite after the methi, and garlic naan that was so light and fresh..possibly the best I'd ever tried. What really made the meal perfect was the friendly and attentive service. It would be hard to find a nicer staff. Definitely try The Monsoon if you are in the Whitechapel area...or London in general and "jonesing" for awesome Indian food! read more

Brick Lane is historically known as "Bengal Village" packed with middle eastern shops and eats. On our venture down to East London, we most definitely had to try the cuisine known for its curry. Walking down the strip, there is so much competition between the restaurants that everyone is fighting to get your business. It's what we call in the States, "hustled". My advice is simply this: don't get "hustled". A worker was standing outside of his restaurant and insisted, no... he refused to let us walk away and basically commanded us to dine in at his restaurant. He tried to sell us his deal but we were not impressed nor convinced because there were no other patrons inside the restaurant. That is a huge sign indicating that the food most likely isn't that great. As we walk down further, we are drawn in by the Monsoon menu because the man offered us the deal: two bottles of wine, choice of appetizer per each person, entree, and nan for just £10. Good deal so we went in. I ordered the Chicken Jafflong which was a spicy dish, flavorful but not blown away. Although, I did enjoy the Garlic Nan with my dish. For my appetizer, I had the Chicken Tikka Pakora which was battered in flour, didn't enjoy it much. We dined in for a good and fair deal but I wouldn't prefer to come back again. read more

We already tried Indian restaurants in the area, so we weren't that excited about another Indian restaurant, but we really enjoyed our meal! The set plate combinations at the end of the menu are a great deal, and delicious. We tried the vegetarian plate and meat plate. Both very good. And the Cabernet Sauvignon from India was unique, but went well with the meal, I was glad I ordered it. A good choice out if many on brick lane- and they could instantly handle a group of 25 people the night we arrived, quite impressive. read more

The flavor is above the norm. It is Bangladesh food which I think is similar yet has a fresher more lively flavor than the Indian establishments normally visited. Again, tonight I had the chicken Shatkora. Excellent, actually, superb. So give it a try. The waiters are friendly and the atmosphere is warm and homey. I never feel rushed or unwelcome. We were wondering through Brick Lane and my friend who has been living approximately two minutes from Brick Lane for almost a year admits that he has never had a curry from Brick Lane. Whaaaaat!? That was my reaction too! We ended up at Monsoon purely because it was open. I forgot to mention that we were hungry and it was after 11pm (this is what happens when you hang out with South Americans :p) The lighting inside makes you feel as though Christmas might be around the corner and the other customers at this hour are usually drunk which can be slightly unpleasant considering the small size of the venue. We ordered the palak paneer (sooooooo gooood!) and a veggie thali to share with way too much rice and papadams. Needless to say, we ate a lot of food! It turns out that if you live close to Brick Lane you get a special VIP card which gets you a discount on future meals. We have yet to return, but I'm sure when we do we will be testing the powers of the card and I will definitely be ordering the paneer again. read more

Family of 4 ate here after leaving Eastern Eye Balti House last night - poor service there. I got a feeling these places on Brick Lane are all very similar. We got 4 free Carlsberg beers: 20 oz. each for my son & me, 8 oz. for wife & daughter. Food was fine typical Indian food. Vegetable samosas tasted fine, but they are tiny (smaller than a ping-pong ball) compared to what I saw for sale in windows of stores on that street (size of your fist) & what we get in the US Indian restaurants. We had a variety of food and naan bread. It was tasty, chicken tikka marsala was good with chunks of white meat chicken in it. Other chicken dishes & vegetable dishes had nice flavorful sauces too. My meal also came with a leg/thigh piece of chicken tikka (the red chicken). It was small & mostly bones and a bit dry. To cool the spicy-ness of some sauces, we asked for raita, a blend of yogurt & cucumber, but they don't have it, only yogurt. The staff was attentive. This morning it seems like it was pretty good, but when we came out last night my wife & I both said it was just average compared to Indian restaurants in California. Bill was £65, about $86 which is probably what we would have paid at home for same meal. read more

So we got back into London after a week in Zurich and we were really hungry and craving some Indian curries. We wander around brick lane and picked the restaurant with the most people in it, hoping that it would be a good enough indicator of the place. Big Mistake. Let's start with all the smoking out front and the doorman holding open BOTH doors so all I can think is, don't be nauseated... I finally asked him to close at least one door so I can stomach any food that may be presented to me in the next few minutes. They make you smoke outside for a reason you know? As we are waiting for was seemed like an eternity... the loud group of drunk men in suits were sort of interesting to watch, but quickly got annoying. Not to mention that they had ONE song on repeat for the entire dinner. I REPEAT, THE ENTIRE TIME WE WERE IN THE RESTAURANT! All of this could have been forgivable had the food proven to be delicious and what dreams are made of. Unfortunately, it was super bland. I don't even know how that happens to Indian curries. I mean the spices were there? but they were weak? I don't know how to explain other than it felt like the spices might have been years old and so it lost some of its potency. *sigh* It's cheap which knocks it up from 2* to 3*, but I was so sorely disappointed and I probably wouldn't go back here again. read more

I had never seen a korma with that color and consistency. The taste was quite disappointing, was too sweet and bland. Really delicious Indian food on Brick Lane. The channa saag, which I ordered as a side portion, was among the best I've ever had, with a perfect medium heat level. I initially ordered the chicken curry for my main, but the waiter pushed me toward an alternate choice that he said was similar but better. Unfortunately I forget the name of the alternate dish, but the waiter did not steer me wrong; it was delicious, and appealing to someone interested in a curry. The waiter also made a recommendation to my husband for the lamb knuckle which turned out to be excellent. One person did receive the incorrect dish, but other than that, everyone was quite pleased with their food. One oddity: Monsoon does not have its own beer or wine, so when we ordered beers, the waiter went somewhere else and purchased them. He brought them back in a plastic shopping bag with the shop receipt, and had us pay for them right away. Obviously the beer was just as delicious as beer stored in-restaurant, but it was a bit strange. I'm glad they at least have a system to get drinks to thirsty diners. There are so many choices for Indian food on Brick Lane; Monsoon is certainly a solid option worth consideration. I would go back. read more

After visiting the many restaurants up and down brick lane. Monsoon was voted the best in the humble opinion of 10+ uni students. We the like the variety and overall consistency of the food. The papadums and the sauces are much tastier and non-watered down versions of what everyone is serving up and down the block. The service at Monsoon isn't the fastest but the owner seems like the nicest man. He stayed open even after 1am when we visited after an early night in Shoreditch and was super friendly and toured us because he thought it was our first visit. He sent naan on the house and recommended this chicken dish that I wish I knew the name for. It was smoky and spicy without being overpowering the curry sector. Really like the area, and if you think it is cramped asked to be moved upstairs. The discount varies from 25-30% but honestly the food here is good enough to only get a 10% discount ;) read more

We came here with a group of 7 and negotiated a sweet deal of 1-free-drink-per person plus 30% the entire tab. They probably give that deal to everyone walking by, but nonetheless we still felt special. We ordered a variety of lamb, chicken and veggie dishes with rice and naan...my favorite was probably the Chicken Sag main--chicken was tender and fresh spinach for about 6 GBP. I also liked the Indian crackers (I'm blanking on their authentic name) served with chutney and other sauces at the start of the meal...I probably filled up too much on those before the entrees arrived. The tandoori chicken was also tasty, however the milder dishes and the lamb curry were so-so, a bit overcooked. The cucumber raita was a bit watery for my taste as well. Overall though, great deal for the food and excellent service...a good place to come with a group if you can grab a table and the nice discount. read more

If I'm in the mood for a curry, this is definitely where I'll be heading. Negotiate on the door and you'll usually be able to get starter/main/rice/naan/poppadoms/drink for less than a tenner, especially if there's a group of you. Once you're inside, make sure you get the royal lamb. If you don't, and one of your dining companions does, you'll get food envy. Instantly. I did it once, never again. Aside from that it's fairly standard, but it's worth taking a trip just for that one dish. read more

Currently my go-to curry house on Brick Lane. We usually get poppadoms, starter, main, rice, naan and two pints of beer for £11-12 per head. The food's really good; perhaps not the best on Brick Lane but well prepared and tasty. Vegetarian options are excellent (I tend to go for an asparagus curry I've never seen elsewhere). Service is good and there's nowhere near as much haggling over the bill as you experience in some places. Highly recommended. read more

I've been here twice in the past few months. If you hover by the door reading the menu and feigning indecision, they'll offer you all sorts of incentives to get you through the door! So hang tough until you've at least been offered a first free drink and a percentage off the bill. You don't have to haggle, just stand there, or start to walk away and they'll offer. Honest! Then go in, it's pretty good and very cheap. The temptation is to over order, but try to resist. The first time I went, we ordered way too much and I was in actual pain on the way home from having tried to fit it in! That real post-Christmas dinner feeling. The next time I went I showed a bit more restraint, but didn't choose so well. Some dishes seem to be all sauce and no substance. But you live and learn, don't you. This place was recommended to us by a shop owner along the south bank of the Thames.. we used the Whitechapel station to get there. The walk over to Brick Lane was an adventure itself, lots of vendors and the smell of curry, loved it! We arrived before dinner time and were the only ones at the restaurant. At first this worried me, but after we sat more folks began arriving. After the first taste all my worries were gone. Everything we ate was perfect. Navigating up Brick Lane is made extremely difficult and slow by the touts representing all the restaurants shouting out discounts to you and sometimes even following you and hassling you up the road. We ended up at Monsoon at 78 Brick Lane just because we got sick of dealing with the sales talk. The place was empty when we got there though it got rowdy with both the conversation and sound system fairly quickly. Prices are fairly cheap but I'm sure are inflated to incorporate the discount being offered on the street. Service wasn't too bad, and in particular I was happy with how our bill dispute with dealt with, though I'm not sure how they'd cope on a busier night. Food was tasty to my uneducated palette and, though not giant portions, we couldn't actually finish all that we'd ordered. In the end Monsoon offerred pretty good value for the quality of the curries. Probably best to avoid when busy as you will no doubt be on the receiving end of harried service that may possibly try and push you out the door to fit in another group of diners. read more

We wanted to have Indian food for dinner and was told to go to any of the Indian restaurants on Brick Lane. We were hungry and it was early, around 4:30pm so we started walking on Brick Lane to find a restaurant. There were so many restaurants, it was hard to pick one. We ended up picking Monsoon restaurant because I saw both Yelp and TripAdvisor stickers. We ordered the Chicken Curry, the Monsoon Special Biriang - lamb tikka, chicken tikka, and king prawn, cooked in a sealed container trapping all the aromas and favors, topped with an egg omelette. And we ordered some garlic naan, pilau rice, and King Prawn Sag - a very aromatic spinach with garlic, fresh coriander, herbs and spices. Everything tasted delicious. Our favorite was the Monsoon Special Biriang. Total for the 3 of us was £42. read more

I went there a couple of weeks ago for lunch. The place was completely empty the whole time we were there but the food was absolutely delicious. With it being the middle of the day, they are obviously a lot more quiet and we were offered a fantastic deal to get us in the door. I was waiting to see what the catch was as I have been caught out before in the evening where other restaurants on Brick Lane offer you a free bottle of wine but then charge huge amounts of money for poppadoms!! However, not so here, we paid £6.50 each which included a starter, main meal, side dish and the choice of either plain rice or naan bread. We were able to choose from anything on the menu. The food was one of the tastiest Indian meals I have ever had and staff were very friendly. Portions weren't overly generous however, when you have three dishes to eat from plus the rice or naan, you cannot complain. We certainly didn't need any dinner in the evening! read more

I not been back to Brick Lane since I worked there in the 80s - back then, there were only Asian restaurants on this street, so it was really nice to see an authentic Indian/Bangladeshi restaurant. Ridoy provided excellent service. The chef made a special aubergine dish that was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone seeking an outstanding culinary experience.
