I had the world's best smoothie at Modoc's. The market is named after the infamous local circus elephant that escaped in 1942, running through the county for five days. Modoc had just performed her last show for the American Circus, when she escaped. The inside of the market is homey with lots of space to work, read or enjoy a chat with a friend. I ordered a smoothie. The clerk told me which smoothies were made from fresh fruit, so I ordered the blackberry smoothie, which came with whipped topping. They also serve coffee and pastries. I shopped around the market and read Modoc's story as I waited for my smoothie. The market sells their own coffee blend. A children's play area with books is available to keep the kids entertained for a bit. My smoothie took about five minutes to prepare and was fabulous...creamy and fruity. If I lived closer, I stop by everyday to try all the flavors. Modoc's is worth a visit. There is limited street parking. read more

Okay spot for coffee- I got an iced vanilla latte but it came out tasting more like an iced mocha?? It wasn't too bad- the beans tasted slightly on the burnt side but it was tolerable. I would say to come more for the ambiance and quirky elephant decor. Good spot to hang out and play some games or read a book. read more

Oh my!!! This place is so nostalgic! It's so comforting to walk in an establishment and feel so fuzzy inside. The decor is simply timeless and relaxing! From comfy leather sofas to tables and chairs. There are a lot of people on computers doing odds and ends stuff. Along with people sitting at tables playing board games. So FUN! They do serve barbecue sandwiches and soup along with yogurt parfait etc. I tried their cold brew with a smidge of vanilla syrup and cream. It was very tasty and smooth. Modoc's Market is everything a coffee shop should be! The atmopshere was comfortable and inviting with plenty of seating in various configurations. The coffee selection was perfect with a nice mix of traditional drinks along with a few specialty ones. There was a nice variety of food items, some sweet and some savory. We enjoyed a vanilla iced coffee which was perfectly made - not too sweet but not too bitter, and a latte of some sort (I can't remember the flavor now). When my husband & I started dating we would meet up at Modoc's (this is when they were open in the evenings), so it holds a special place in my heart. We bonded over coffee and nerded out over the building's story of Modoc the elephant. It's a really cool story. If you don't know the story, you should definitely read about it (the story is posted in the coffee shop). The shop is decorated around the theme of Modoc the elephant and the circus. It's a true story! Anyways, now I meet up with people at Modoc's - and I tell them the story of how I used to meet my husband here when we dated. And how it's got its name. And about the roastery next door, where the beans they use come from. It's just a cool place, with lots of cool elements. And good drinks with many options. The butterbeer lattes and the lavender honey (made with REAL honey) latte are recommended. They also serve lunch items as well, the cold case in the front has sandwiches and wraps available for purchase. And they usually have a hot sandwich option and soups available. The chicken salad wraps are perfect for breakfast (don't judge me) and lunch, and the prices are really affordable. The cooler cases are full of local bottled sodas. So if you are looking for local drinks or gifts, they have lots of items in the front of their cafe for sale too. Like candies, chocolates, coffee beans, sodas, candles, snacks, and other things. This was only my second time ever visiting Wabash, but for some reason, I think I will be going back more often! This eccentric little coffee shop located right off the main drag is named after one of the 3 elephants in the circus that visited Wabash. The shop has more to offer than just good coffee, they have freshly made scones, muffins, and more. They also have plenty of seating, with another room located behind the barista bar. I got a lavender iced latte and it was great, my friend got coffee and a chocolate chip scone and he absolutely loved it! I look forward to going back and trying out some of their other menu items. Not sure what all the high ratings are about. Maybe it was better pre-pandemic? The coffee drinks were just okay. The cup mine was served in had a huge chip out of it, on the rim near the handle. I am not a fan of being given broken glassware to drink out of. The scone was pretty awful. It was thin and flavorless. It was supposed to be blueberry almond. It looked super pale, flat and undercooked. It was also pre-wrapped, which might be a COVID thing. It did not taste fresh. The atmosphere of the place is fine and it seems as though locals love it. It also has an interesting story about how it got its name which involves an elephant escaping from the circus. Also, the coffee is top notch. Out of towners looking for a coffee stop, we came to Modoc's and really enjoyed it! The story behind Modoc's is reason enough in itself to go, but we were truly enjoyed our iced coffees. I had a miel and was truly pleased with the integrated flavors. My husband had a mocha & enjoyed it as well. I'm not sure about the seating -- seems great for catching up with a friend and maybe not so great getting work done. I also wish the baristas would have been a bit more friendly. Thankfully, I'm not shy to ask questions, but they weren't very forthcoming with information either. Overall 5 stars for the history, drinks, and general enjoyment! read more

This is a great, spacious coffee shop that you might not expect to encounter in a little town. Wabash might not appreciate it, but as an out of towner, I was impressed. Great coffee menu, great service, lots of souvenirs, and bulk coffee to buy. The service was super quick and with a smile. They have lots of seating, and free WiFi. There is a big room behind the coffee counter with extra seats for doing work, relaxing, or reading. The theme and story go great with the concept. Cuban coffee was good, even if it wasn't what a Floridian would think of as a Cuban coffee. Mocha Frappuccino was good as well, if you basically go to coffee shops for dessert. Prices are decent compared to other coffee shops in larger markets. If you're visiting downtown Wabash, go here and then walk around the corner to Reading Room bookstore for a good lazy afternoon. The prices at this place are outrageous and the coffee is not all that great. When we made the comment to the hotel staff where we were staying they rolled their eyes and said, "yeah, and they have been successful at keeping other coffee places from starting up in Wabash." Lack of competition is probably keeping this place from improving much and keeps their prices artificially inflated. The town should let some others come in to show how a real coffee shop should be run. Yeah, the nostalgia of the shop is kitschy and makes for a neat place to stand while waiting for your coffee but paying more than $4 for a 16 ounce americano is a big gouge. Sorry folks, that is two shots of espresso and some water. Which costs the owners a grand total of 30 cents. A truly heinous profit margin despite being in a hard store. My favorite coffee shop hands down. I come here religiously whenever I'm in town. I stopped in a few times this past weekend while passing through Wabash and realized that I hadn't reviewed Modoc's yet. I'll start by saying they take great pride in serving great coffee. Things don't move quickly but that's because they're focused on quality and the experience. This isn't your everyday Starbucks. It's your local hang out spot. It's the place that you makes you feel at home even when you're far away from home. They have a wide variety of coffee drinks and smoothies as well as any type of milk that your looking for (soy, almond, 2%, skim, coconut etc). And have an extensive list of flavors to add in. They have also recently undergone a remodel which made the place even more charming while keeping nods to the past. You must stop in if you're even close to Wabash!! read more

visited Modoc in the past and service was ok but recently walked in, stood in front of the counter with 3 employees behind the counter; another couple was waiting off to the side for at least 5-10 minutes when one of the employees reached onto the counter and handed them a straw; they had to wait 5 minutes to get a straw; I was still waiting after 10 minutes and felt I was invisible even though one of the employees looked directly at me several times; at that point, another customer walked in and was immediately served; we never exchanged a single word the whole 10 minutes we were in the store; beth said it was maybe because I had a Moose Lodge jacket on. . .don't know about that but will never go in there again. . .wouldn't recommend it read more

It may very well have helped that I arrived in Modoc's during a recent fundraising wheelchair tour of Northern Indiana with my road support for the day and, oh yeah, I was escorted by Wabash's Mayor VanLandingham, a hospitable and welcoming mayor who also provided a pretty remarkable response to a wheelchair issue I was having at the time I wheeled into the city of Wabash. Modoc's Market is a small convenience market that serves up some amazing and affordable coffee along with just about everything else you'd expect from an indie coffee shop. Wabash is one of those cities that is bigger than it seems, but it's also small enough to retain that smalltown charm and to largely avoid the web of mega-coffee chains like Starbucks. It's a place where a good ole' fashioned coffee shop can survive and thrive. I was amazed to get a large coffee for a mere $1.00. I mean, seriously. You can barely make your own coffee in a Keurig for that price. Plus, it was darn fine coffee. While located in an older building, Modoc's was surprisingly wheelchair friendly and had a simple yet charming sitting area where you could enjoy your coffee. What else can I say? Great coffee. Friendly staff. Comfy areas to relax. Free WiFi. Who needs Starbucks? Go to Modoc's. read more

Sadly, I was served the most flavorless egg "muffin" (no bun) on the planet - shredded uncooked potato provided texture but otherwise no onion, garlic, herbs or cheese. Modoc's Market is a great place to visit in downtown Wabash. It's a small convenience store with groceries (the only real option in the downtown area) and a cafe that serves some really nice coffee. Cool coffee place with sweet treats and an interesting heritage and story about the elephant who went crazy. Kids will love playing with all the elephants around the building. I'm not a coffee fan, but I liked all the dessert options, and also some of the nice coffee cups and decanters that make great presents. Modoc's market has given me a place to go in Wabash. The coffee is pretty great! They have a featured brew daily and bring your own cup for a $.50 fill! Modoc's was not quite what I expected based on the other reviews, so I feel it may be helpful to point out that as of June 2012, this place seemed to be less a "general" or "small grocery" store and more a snack shop with a coffee bar and roaster. There was lots of candy of the sort that my mother gets all jazzed about (valomilk, blackjack gum), chips, and a cooler of pop. Also a small menu of coffee drinks and a decent selection of locally roasted whole bean coffee. If I'd been from the area, I might have been less disappointed. I stopped there in the middle of my hour commute because based on its website and the other Yelp reviews, I was under the impression I could pick up a couple groceries and grab a coffee. I didn't want button candy, so I settled for coffee. However, as it was 90 degrees, I went for the bean option. Maybe there is usually a different selection, or maybe I missed something. At any rate, the coffee was quite delicious, and the service was friendly. Also, the decor of the sitting room was super cute. I will probably go back. But next time I will be sure to eat something first. read more
