I have been lucky enough to raft the colorado five times spending close to four months on the water. After outfitting with Moenkopi that first year I realized i wouldn't even consider outfitting with another company for my future trips. And each year they confirmed that I made the right decision. The first year we had a flip at lava falls in our party. While chasing down the boat we lost an oar. Great... $100 or whatever. Then while we were flipping the boat over someone untied the bowline to use and... subject of debate here... but it appears as if they just left it in the water. So as we watched the rope drift out of the eddy and into the current I'm thinking "Ok, another $50-100." Adding up all the gear we had damaged or lost I was expecting a bill and to have to hunt people down for payment or swallow the loss. Brady Black, the owner, however was less concerned about the oar and rope and more concerned about the time we had. He was curious of the story of the flip, how we wrangled the boat, if anyone got hurt, and how the weather was! He seemed as if he couldn't care less about the oar. Now, I'm sure he does, but his relaxed layed back approach to the loss of his gear set my mind at ease. And better yet he didn't charge me! Since then I have outfitted with Moenkopi four more times and every year we seem to have lost or broken something. Some minor, some major.. and it seems as though Moenkopi considers this "wear and tear". Beyond being forgiving of our damages, Brady is always "hooking us up" with tons of extras. He is very relaxed and accommodating and it has become apparent over the years that he cares more about you and the quality of your trip then he does about slim profit margins. The food is incredible and worth paying for them to sort it all out. Very convenient and delicious. We have had every dietary restriction under the sun on our trips and they have been respectful and considerate of each and every one. One small issue we ran into was when having a vegetarian on our trip we would have one can of vegetarian beans and the rest would have lard. That would mean cooking and cleaning one extra pan because of the veggie. We could have just as easily had all vegetarian beans. Small issue, i know, and i blamed the vegetarian anyway. ;) Oh, and do yourself a favor.... add extra egg rolls and churros to the menu!!! Each time we return to Flagstaff we stay at the Moenkopi river house which is amazing! Tons of room for spreading out, many bedrooms and bathrooms, laundry and a huge garage for gear. I think it has been important to stay there as a group before and after the trip to strengthen group dynamics. Plenty of room to get together or spread out. In closing, Brady, Marilyn and the whole gang and have kept me completely satisfied with the service, the gear, the food, and the accommodations at Moenkopi. I would definitely rent from them again!!!! As soon as I get another river permit!!!! read more

I have coordinated private river trips on the Colorado through Grand Canyon for more than 20 years and I use outfitters to provide food prep, rental equipment, and shuttle. I have used all of the outfitters multiple times that are based in Flagstaff, Arizona. I have had very good previous service from Moenkopi, but on my last trip in October 2015, I had the worst experience I have had with any outfitter. I don't normally post reviews, but this instance was so bad, it has driven me away from using this outfitter and I felt it is only fair to warn others. Problems included poorly packed food, poor preparation of the cooler ice, and to top it off, the owner increased his quotation by 19% (about $1,400) only six weeks before the launch of our 25-day trip. We didn't think the owner gave us a believable explanation for why the costs increased and why he wasn't willing to stand behind this bid. We had obtained bids from other good outfitters in January 2015 and selected Moenkopi, even though they were not the cheapest, due to good previous experience and wanting to help an outfitter that was starting to provide more parity in the outfitter selection available for these trips. We tried at that point to go with other outfitters, but it was too late to get onto their busy schedule, so we were stuck staying with Moenkopi and paying the increase. Our group consisted of several highly experienced Grand Canyon boatmen who all said it was the worst outfitting experience they have had. We were all quite angry about the outrageous last-minute cost increase and then about slowly finding all the problems with the food/ice pack as the trip progressed down the river. I won't go into gory details on the food pack/ice problems, but they were severe and forced us to reconstruct and repack the entire menu for the last 10 days of the trip in order to have relatively decent meals to eat. We felt the owner handled the situation poorly and did not stand behind his bid or promises to his customers, a very bad business decision. We will not be recommending his services in the future. Since the loss of his long-time trip organizer, Marilyn, we believe the Moenkopi operation has become disorganized and unable to provide the type of service it has in the past. I have recently spoken to another experienced river person who used Moenkopi's services in the Grand Canyon in August 2015 and had equally bad things to say about his experience; according this person, Moenkopi even refunded some of their money back to compensate for the poor service. read more

I second everything Elizabeth had to say. Having done long trips without an outfitter before, I can absolutely say that Moenkopi made everything from pre trip to post trip a breeze. Cabin rental - We opted to stay in the Moenkopi cabin two days before heading out on our trip and the day after, which turned out to be less of a cabin and more of a big house and was more than enough room for all 10 of our crew. This was super clutch for pre trip gear checks and breakdown as we had tons of room to lay stuff out in the garage and house to make sure we had everything organized. It was also a real treat to have one final shower and night in a bed. Moenkopi also allowed us to ship some bulky equipment to them and then store some things at their warehouse while on the trip - very useful as I drove cross country with my mountain bikes to use after the river. All of this for a very reasonable price per person. Equipment and meals - We used the Moenkopi meal prep and rigs as well. I was absolutely blown away by the organization and quality of the meals and equipment. It's strange to say, but I have never eaten so consistently well as I did in the Grand Canyon! Having each days food organized with a comprehensive list of where everything was and when to use it saved us so much time on the river and allowed us to focus enjoying our time. We ran across a few other trips while on the river who were scrambling through boats to find dinner and were always astonished to see what we were dining on, and this is really what made us super stoked we chose Moenkopi for meal prep. Staff - Incredibly friendly, stoked to be getting people on the river, and super knowledgeable. We worked with Rayne, Liz, Brady, and Wayde, all of whom were not only very helpful, but also a blast to be around. We had a few people who have done the Canyon without the use of Moenkopi, and all have agreed that they would never do it again without. When comparing cost with the value received, you just cannot go wrong. What seemed like difficult logistics and planning was an absolute cake walk and we were able to do exactly what we came to do - enjoy our time on the river! read more

Hello, I wanted to take this opportunity and share my story and gratitude of what was a trip of a lifetime on a small private Group Grand Canyon Trip using Moenkopi. I was the lucky one that put in for a permit thinking it would take 10-12 years only to get it the first go around. Not only shocked, I had not put the study time in on what it would take to make this trip happen. My first stop was Mountain Buzz to see which company to use. 3 companies were recommended, however "Go with Mo" was dominant. I called and received quotes from 3 companies. All were competitive, but Brady Black taking the time (30 minutes) to talk to me on the phone answering my questions put his company over the top. Throughout the 20 month process, I as TL and other members would call Brady with questions and he was always helpful. I assembled a group that had 4 competent rafters and 4 novices, but what I wanted was that no one in the group had been on the Grand before. Brady encouraged that and it paid off. Everyone was anticipating every corner and brings a new meaning to read and run rapid. No flips, no injuries (stubbed toes don't count), and no fights. I attribute that to the people on the trip, the gear that we used, the awesome food that was provided, and the bending backwards help that was provided by Brady and staff at Moenkopi. read more

This was my second trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. The outfitter for the first trip didn't meet my expectations, Moenkopi Riverworks did. Brady, Marilyn and the staff of Moenkopi Riverworks are detail oriented, hardworking people. We booked a "Door to Door" package and utilized the Riverhouse on the evening prior to our rig day at Lee's Ferry. In addition we had Moenkopi provide a shuttle from Lee's Ferry to LAS.....guess who the driver was, Brady the owner of Moenkopi. Marilyn and the staff work very hard to make sure that you get what you asked for, and with a bunch of foodies on our trip we had no issues with the food pack for the trip. When the tell you that they have a custom butcher that takes care of all of their butchering they aren't kidding, he even made the breakfast sausage links, and the lox that we had with our cream cheese and bagels. Warehouse staff went out of their way to assist us with some packing issues on our shipment of gear as well. Dan was out man at Lee's for rig day and that evening as well as the following morning when he made us breakfast prior to our departure, he was a wealth of knowledge and any outfitter would be lucky to have him in their employ. It's clear that these folks take their jobs seriously and are very good at what they do. read more

Moenkopi did an awesome job setting us up with everything we needed for our private trip. they packed our food and we ate like kings/queens for every meal! i don't even eat this well when I'm not on the river. Rayne helped us setup at lees ferry, he's the man. Brady let us stash our stuff in his own home while we were on the river, and he did with a smile. their gear is well taken care of and we had no issues with our rigs/kitchen supplies/groover etc. These guys made our trip way more comfortable than i could've imagined. I will definitely use them again and would recommend them for anyone looking to outfit they're private trip. I can't speak on them as a guiding service on the river, cause we were a private trip, but I would totally be confident in their ability to help get a crew down the river that needed it. read more

I received my Grand Canyon permit 8/7/14 and Launched 8/25/14 of the same year. Moenkopi was able to get us completely outfitted in 18 days without an ounce of sacrifice to customer service! Their food was delicious with a thorough preparation manual. Their equipment was clean, high quality, and all in extremely good condition. Brady spent an afternoon getting us outfitted for launch the next morning, and would have spent the night with us if we let him. Marilyn even drove a forgotten item all the way from Flagstaff to the Lee's Ferry the morning of launch. Brady was early to pick us up at Peirce Ferry, and we loaded and left while Pro Outfitters had clients sitting on the beach. I spoke with and had personal endorsements for every Grand Canyon outfitter before deciding on Moenkopi. I never once regretted my decision to use them. They were more of a trusted partner than a vendor. No question was ever too trite and answers were often far more encompassing than I could imagine. Their pre and post trip Riverhouse is tremendous, I cannot imagine using hotel rooms instead. The food was great. One little story that will resonate. We lost some gear in a flip on day two, I called Moenkopi on the sat phone and two days later a commercial motor rig delivered replacement gear to us. Moenkopi Riverworks is by far the most well organized, customer oriented, and extremely personable service. The house was spacious and welcoming to any river-goer. This was a great addition to the before and after of being on the river. Rigging and de-rigging was a breeze with moenkopi. Having never rafted before, all ran very smoothly and I did not feel overwhelmed whatsoever. On the river was exceptional. All meals and snacks were packaged by day - which created ease when you rolled into camp. Moenkopi provides you with all you need to know and so much food you won't go hungry. The Colorado River is the trip of a lifetime! If you get the opportunity to do it, use Moenkopi as your outfitter! The gear is top notch, staff generous and easy to work with, and food delicious. We had 16 ppl on a 21 day winter trip, and they handled all our needs with ease. The river house fit everyone pre and post trip and was an awesome location really close to the FLG airport. Brady was extremely knowledgeable and had great communication with us before and after the trip. Moenkopi made our Grand Canyon trip quite enjoyable. They helped us set up our boats, dialed the food except for a few misunderstandings and brought extra umbrellas in case we needed them at the put in.
