Weird taste (of Christmas!) ... could drink 70% because I was thirsty!
    S K G.

A local Maryland friend (newbie, of over four years) really talked this place up for their Reubens (my all time favorite sandwich). We went on a Sunday around 6:00 p.m. and were told they were closed (although their website says open till 9:00 p.m.!). Went back Monday for lunch. What can I say, I won't be going back. I can make a better Reuben at home in Germany! I should start by saying the first table we sat at we got grease all over our clothes (we learned why!). Their Reuben was so greasy we could have lubed a car engine (see photo!). The Bloody Mary which also comes with pastrami was ironically not greasy, which clearly shows they know how to dredge the grease. One Reuben and one Bloody Mary cost 26€ no lunch time special price. There was a strange Christmassy taste to both items, not sure what it was (cinnamon or cloves?). It just made everything taste wrong. The "service" if you sit outside on the front sidewalk area is non-existent. As a final note, although the website says cash only when I went to pay he asked me if I would be paying with card or cash! Clearly consistency is not their forte.

I've never had a pastrami sandwich. It may be strange to have my first pastrami sandwich in Berlin given I live in NYC. This sandwich was delicious. I may be converted to pastrami. All of the food here was amazing. The restaurant was empty so our group of 13 kind of took over. This is a great place for a quick lunch or dinner.

Small pastrami sandwich portion...yes it's the small

Came here on New Years day as part of our recovery program from clubbing deep into the night. The location is a little tricky to find - Mogg is tucked away inside a museum type space. Searching for ways to allude the hangover, I was delighted to see a bloody mary (with pastrami!) on the menu. I could have gone for a bit spicier but the pastrami was a nice tough that actually paired greatly with the drink. I doubled down on the pastrami and ordered the "small" portion of the pastrami sandwich (10,50 euro vs 15,50 euro for large portion). But the portion was not small at all! The sandwich had plenty of pastrami to induce a food coma following the meal. Very tasty sandwich and I really enjoyed the coleslaw on the side.

The reuben was to die for. Comes with a pickle & cabbage

Great sandwiches, great service & some of the best coffee on the area. I ordered the reuben on rye with Russian sauce & cabbage and it was mouthwatering. Ypu should definitely check this place out & have a look at the grand synagogue on the other side of the block. If you want a great sandwich & are craving a good Jewish deli check this place out! Only docked this place 1 star for their high prices at around €16 a sandwich! Definitely worth the high price but avoid if you're on a budget.

Meh. I've experienced better. Is this place supposed to be a Jewish deli? If so then why are they selling pulled pork sandwiches? Maybe it's a nouveau-Jewish deli I ordered a Reuben. The rye bread wasn't ryey(is that a word) enough and too heavy. Also barely toasted the bread was. And the corned beef wasn't corned beef. The cole slaw had too much mayo. I make better cole slaw. Heck, Denny's makes better slaw. The pickles had tasted good but where rather limp. The interior is clean and simple with nice white tiles. I might go back if I happen to walk by, but in no hurry (no latkes...?!?!)

This restaurant recommended usmy friend and the word "Pastrami" in her description of the menu meant that it became obligatory place to visit during our visit in Berlin. Modest and modern decor but with the taste. A couple of comfortable couches, a few tables and chairs and literally 4 tables outside on the street for lovers of fresh air and the view of visitors to this district. The menu is interesting and varied. We love meat so pastrami (small 9 euro, large 13 euro) was our main goal. As a gourmand I do not restrained me before ordering the NY cheesecake (4 euro). Everything is done here on site with fresh ingredients. Friendly service - two girls is realy trying to advise and please the guests. Prices belong to those higher - so subtract one star. But ....the pastrami You will not meet anywhere .... at home also it is difficult to do (we have not yet managed) and these in Mogg's is simply worth of sin. I would heartily recommend.

The mighty reuben - the real deal!

When I read in the NY Times that Mogg and Melzer import their pastrami from the States, I knew these guys meant business. In the past few weeks I tried hunting down a decent reuben in Amsterdam but sadly had no luck and was beginning to give up on Europe. Enter Mogg and Melzer! The restaurant is located in an old girls school down a quiet street in Mitte. If you didn't know about this place there is no way you would find it but I think this is the way they want it. After speaking to the chef, I was told they import the pastrami from the US but conduct all the preparation in Berlin including smoking the meat. They have a pastrami on rye (large and small) and a reuben on offer (one size). After around 20 minutes the reuben arrived accompanied by a small bowl of coleslaw and a pickle (nice touch). The reuben was stacked maybe 10-12 layers high of perfectly smoked pastrami with the right amount of fat content, thickness and juiciness. They also go very lightly on the sauerkraut which is how it should be as it can dominate the taste of the sandwich. The Russian dressing and Swiss cheese were also perfectly applied. All in all they have really nailed this sandwich on toasted rye albeit on the slightly expensive side (12 Euro). I have recently eaten a variety of reuben sandwiches in Australia that have tried to copy the US deli's and none have really been a contender. I can confidently say that Mogg and Melzer is the real deal and certainly is by far the best reuben I have eaten since living outside the States. 5 stars all the way! Only small thing I would say, is that there is 1 chef madly making sandwiches so expect a small wait - it ain't Katz deli....yet!

Pastrami in Berlin? WTF? I was Shocked but not Awed. Curated and Brined On premise this moist molehill of Perfectly Peppery/Salty thinly Sliced and Toasted Sandwich is Simply Superb. BUT with that said it should be Served in a Prudent timeframe. 'Oi Vey' the wait. 30 minutes for a less than Generous serving of this Earl of a Sandwich. I Must be in Mitte. I come from the school of Carnegie As in the world famous NYC deli Where Pastrami is 'Steeped' in both Portion and Legend. Mogg and Melzer have 'Hutspa' and Smoke 'Underground', Just the way i prefer it. But 'I Love New York'.

This place is one of my favorite places to eat in Berlin. The staff is very friendly and remind me of home back in USA. The food was great. I ordered a small pastrami sandwich and the meat was perfect. It melted in my mouth and paired perfectly with the mustard and rye bread. The pickle was the perfect touch to refresh the palette. Highly recommend to berliners or travelers alike.

Now just called "Mogg" - this place was great. It's inside what apparently used to be a girl's school. When we walked in around 330, we were the only ones there, but then it started to fill up. We started with the matzah ball soup - it's not traditional, but very very good. The matzah balls are smaller than normal, and I suspect that there may be a little ground meat or chicken in them. The broth is very simple and has a good amount of celery. Then we got the pastrami sandwich and the Reuben. The pastrami is delicious, and the coleslaw is surprisingly good. I usually hate coleslaw, but I was a fan. We finished with the cheesecake, which was amazing. Our waiter was incredibly nice and gave us recommendations for our stay in Berlin. This place was great

Mogg is my absolute favorite restaurant. I come here for every possible occasion. I always get the Chicken Liver Brûlée which I haven't found anywhere else. I just love it. And after that the Brioche. It's a really nice ambiente but still casual. Its in an old school and stays cool during hot summer days. You can go there as groups as well but think about reserving a table beforehand!

Decent pastrami. I think the half-portion is enough for a woman unless she is starving. Service is fine.

Tucked away in Prenzlauer Berg, Southern Vittles is an authentic restaurant that checks all of the boxes. I haven't done much soul food exploring stateside, but one of my brunch go-tos is chicken and waffles. And since it's swept the nation from coast to coast, I've had to put up with various quirks, ranging from dry chicken to a stingy amount of overpriced chicken. But this was some of the best chicken and waffles I've ever had. The chicken was so tender that it stole the show, but the sweetness from the maple syrup made it taste even better. (Part of me wishes that the maple syrup hadn't been drizzled onto the chicken in the kitchen and that it would come on the side, but the chef poured the perfect amount, so I can't really complain.) And because I came on a weekend morning, I got to enjoy the bottomless coffee service. It doesn't seem that special because it's from your standard coffee machine, but what really made it stand out was how the owner would walk around with the coffee pot and ask if I wanted a refill. (Alas, it reminds me of how servers in the U.S. constantly come around for water refills...!) And the coffee also tasted better than some of the burnt excuses for coffee that some fancier places in the city sell, so don't look down on a simple cup of joe. Speaking of the owner, he provided the best service that I've ever experienced in a Berlin restaurant. The small talk (imagine that!) made me feel like I was back home in the U.S. The prices (given the exchange rate) made me second guess that feeling a bit, but I can't deny the deliciousness of the meal or the friendliness of the owner.

It's Tex-Mex, though presumably the German version, as it was nothing your average American would recognise - and note that the burgers are actually sandwiched between tortillas rather than buns. Portions are generous for the price, and our meal of nachos with cheese, sour cream and guacamole followed by a burrito and two burgers, with a beer each, and s tip came to just under €50 for three. All the food was freshly cooked and tasty. Service was very friendly and helpful and a kitchen error with our order was picked up and sorted without us having to point it out. The main problem was the speed of the kitchen - or rather, the lack of it. We were served reasonably quickly, but as soon as it got busy, other tables had to wait longer, and one couple gave up after 40 minutes. So, I'd happily go there again, but others may have had a different experience. Go early or during quieter periods, unless you're happy to wait. Update December 2018: another good meal, under €25 for two including beers, and this time with (much) faster food service.
