It's taken me eons to finally visit PS1, but I finally made it! The little sibling of the MoMA, it's a short trek to LIC from Manhattan though a world away from the crowds in midtown. The entrance is located at the intersection of Jackson Ave and 46th Ave, from the outside it doesn't look like much, a boxy cement block with a partial glass window, P.S.1. debossed in bold 8-foot letters in the cement. This mega cinder block contains a modest lobby with a ticket counter on the left. A walkway leads past this desk and exits to an open gravel courtyard, encircled in the same cement walls and depending on the schedule of exhibitions may or may not showcase outdoor artworks, though does include several picnic tables with benches for those who would like to take a sit. The main building is directly to the back, three (or four depending on which part of the building) floors of works displayed in halls that were once classrooms. You can tell from the stairwells, hallways and entries into each presentation section approximately how the classroom(s) were shaped and what renovations were done to accommodate the current building uses. Such history in these halls! Arriving with a small group for a friend's birthday activities, Ayoung Kim's "Delivery Dancer Codex" was one of the key works that my friend wanted to see. I had no idea that it would entail such an immersive experience with gigantic projector screens and complex animation sequences. Without giving away too much I'll just say it questioned the gig economy of delivery services, proposed transient identities between time and space, utilized various methods of animation flowing in a multi-perspective format. I questioned a couple creative screenplay and musical decisions, though found the overall storytelling enough to make me feel uncomfortable about a couple things, which I believe was an intentional purpose of this piece. Glad they provided seats, open walls and inclines to lean on while watching the film sections since they were pretty long, like 15 min each! Up until today, free admission within 14 days was available for those who purchase a regular MoMA ticket, held a New York Pass (paid pass that grants access to many cultural attractions), NY residents, MoMA members and children $16 and under. Otherwise normal adult tickets were $10 for regular admission, $5 for seniors and students. Even at full price $10 was one of the more affordable museum prices in the city. Starting January 2 Friday, according to their website admission is FREE for ALL! Sweet! There are bathrooms, a gift shop, a cafe, and self-storage lockers available for use. The gift shop is very extensive! Lots of art books, crafts, gifts, stationary, accessories are available. Food and drink is not allowed in the museum and must be finished in the first floor lobby/cafe spaces prior to proceeding to the exhibits upstairs. Apparently the original school boiler room in the basement is open for visit which I mean to check out next time! For more info: https://www.momaps1.org/en

Museum. GOOD. Artwork on the Building caught my eye. An abandoned Schoolhouse transformed into a Contemporary Art Institute. Regret not venturing forth 'cause I found out later that there was free admission. RECOMMEND.

I finally made it back to MoMA PS1 after years away, and I'm so glad I did! This iconic Long Island City space once a 19th-century public school has become one of the most important contemporary art institutions in NYC, and it was the perfect setting for a Black History Month celebration. This event, hosted by the Long Island City Partnership and sponsored by Rise Light & Power, highlighted local LIC Black entrepreneurs through a special discussion that was both inspiring and community-driven. I loved that they also spotlighted Black-owned food businesses like Pine & Ginger, Island Foodie (with their delicious jerk chicken) and Selena's Gourmet, who kept everyone happy with sweet treats. Wine, beer, and refreshments rounded out the celebration, making it a true gathering of art, culture, and flavor. Thank you to the Long Island City Partnership for hosting such a thoughtful event and creating space for these important conversations and culinary experiences.

This is a contemporary art museum hosted in a old building which used to be a public school as per the name and was apparently the first one in LIC. I was there a while ago and the weather was nice which is a plus when you go here because unlike most museums, there's actually some stuff outside that you might want to check out. I'm not the biggest fan of art past the 1940s with some exceptions but there's some unique enough exhibits. If open, the Boiler Room is a creepy fun way of looking into the past. One of the more popular things here is James Turrell's "Meeting" which is essentially an open sunroof which used to have days you can go and check it out during sunset which appeared to stop during the pandemic. There's even some artwork along the old staircases such as Ernesto Caivano's In the Woods. The most interesting exhibit there when I went was an Indian artist (I believe) with some daily photos and videos as well as someone else's introspection on their mother who I believe had schizophrenia or some other type of psychosis. If you want food or drinks, I would recommend having them before as the little cafe is overpriced though I had a cookie there which was okay. Otherwise, two exhibits were closed so it was a lot of walking for not much. The place is free for New Yorkers so it would be nice to check out if you're in the neighborhood but I wouldn't recommend traveling too far unless there's some hypermodern artist you are a fan of who happens to be exhibited here. If it wasn't free, I would probably give this place a 2 at the highest as so.

Very Cool Fun Book Fair yesterday afternoon. You had to be there. 09/15/25

MoMA PS1 is great. Recently visited for the Art Book Fair. It was Read a book week and we were also celebrating Public Libraries. I definitely recommend you visit but maybe not during a big event. It was crazy busy space was limited. My friend had tickets for a dedicated time before we went.

Located in an old school brick building with a classic creepy boiler room in the basement. Short walk from Court Sq MTA. Admission is free for NY residents. Out of towners pay $10, which is reasonable. Staff at the entrance, cashiers and host in main building were super friendly and helpful. Staff in galleries was way too many of them and most were just playing with the cell phone. Why were they there? They had 2 main exhibitions which were comprehensive. One had a controversial adult theme, which is ok for a venue like this. The other was an innovative blend of future tech and emotion, think TRON meets Korean anime girls falling for each other. It was immersive and provocative, which modern art should be about. I wish the remaining space would have been used to display more art, especially the poorly used courtyard space. More variety and more displays would have been nice and are certainly possible in this space. Overall it was a bit underwhelming. If you're a tourist staying in Manhattan, it's probably not worth coming out here. If you are a modern art enthusiast and like queer art, this place is for you.

I haven't been to MOMA PS1 in years, not since Le Fooding which was 15 years ago (yes, I'm old haha). I'm glad to see that it's thriving with more galleries and it's free for NY residents if you show your ID. I came here on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't crowded at all. There were three floors of exhibits with more avant garde art that they would not display at the main MOMA. The staff were really nice since they gave us tips and recommended exhibits. If you don't want to brave the crowds of the main MOMA in midtown, this is a good place for some art and culture on a weekend.

Literally more exhibits were closed than open. Specifically James Turrell, Donchristian Jones, Homeroom, and Historic Boiler Room were all closed. Unfortunately my friend convinced me to not ask for a refund because I support the arts and this maker office space bc I'm not a philistine and we're touristing

My angel took me here during my first year in NYC (2019)- yes, I know my review is quite literally years late! I'm working on finishing all the drafts I've somehow accumulated but never finished. My friends and I had such a great time going through the exhibits. We especially enjoyed Julien Ceccaldi's wild exhibition as it very much aligned with our sense of humor. Every corner had something interesting to look at and we really enjoyed coming here for the first time and discovering secrets in the building.

MoMA PS 1 is a contemporary art museum located in Long Island City, Queens. MoMA PS1 is affiliated w/ the beautiful Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in Manhattan. I have been to MoMA PS1 numerous times over the years and have viewed many exhibits / interactive exhibits & some performances during their Spring, Summer & Fall Open Houses. Artist Ana Pellicer's "Vestaurio Para Nahui Ollin" - costume made out of hammered copper & had copper chains and "Collar De Oaxaca" - a 36ft. Long chain made out of hammered copper. Jeremy Touissaint Baptiste's Exhibit "Pendulum Music: An Arrangement for Four Performers and Geodesic Dome" - was held in the MoMA PS1 Dome- Interesting. I look forward to returning to see other fantastic exhibits. visited this museum to tour their modern arts exhibit. Admission was free for NYC residents. Upon entry there were some huge colorful art deco blocks arranged in connected unison- very artsy. Past the lobby and enter through the door to rooms fill with varieties of art exhibits from artists all around the world. Though there were guided tours for this museum- didn't have time to sign up for the tour. Many rooms were arranged with types of sculptures from different eras and countries. Without a guided tour it is more difficult to grasp the idea of the pieces of artwork; though the general idea is posted along the wall. Overall, a nice museum to spend in LIC

Entrance is free for New York residents. Fun little gem in Long Island City, around the corner from Trader Joe's and 7 train. Three floors and basement packed with lots of art, and curated well. They also have a little cafe and lots of outdoor seating. Staff were all super helpful and kind.

Barnes is also based in Dayton, OH but instead of animals, explores the Black experience in the Midwest with an equally lively palette.
