I've been going to Momentum for years. I know several of the barbers and have had cuts with many of them. I have never heard or experienced any anti-gay/LGBTQ language or behavior from anyone at Momentum. But the people claiming to have heard anti-LGBTQ language are people who just happened to stop in for the first time? That's really weird. I mean, how is it that a straight guy like me, who is in the shop every few weeks, has never heard discriminatory language there, but someone who is there once is convinced that this place is a cesspool of hateful language and behavior? To me, this seems like an extortion tactic from someone who wants to sell "reputation cleanup" services or some other scam. I always love my cuts at Momentum. Scheduling appointments is easy. Homophobic & Unprofessional -- Either Way, Completely Unacceptable. At my child's request, we visited this barber shop for a trendy haircut. What should have been a simple, positive experience turned into something deeply disappointing. While chatting during the cut, the barber asked my 12-year-old if he had a cell phone. My son explained that he had lost the privilege due to poor choices. Rather than respecting that, the barber criticized me (his parent) for taking the phone away and even justified my kiddo's inappropriate behavior. It then got worse. The barber then asked my 12-year-old if his dad was gay (after seeing my spouse walk in) and followed up with: "I didn't always agree with the gays, but hey, it's a free country." This was beyond unprofessional -- it was inappropriate, invasive, and is criminal. No adult in a professional setting should be engaging a child in conversations about their parent's discipline decisions, let alone making personal comments about sexuality or family dynamics. Took my 7yo son in with a shaggy, over-ears mop--basically a bowl with bits that poke out around the sides. Told the stylist that he likes that way, please just even it out a bit. When we left the store, his sideburns were shaved to the top of his ears and everything above that cut to similar lengths so it could be arranged upward with product....like every other cut coming out of that place: shaved sides, weirdness piled on top. They seem to only know how to do one thing. I guess they also don't know how to ask clarifying questions. Anyway, the client has been in tears on and off all afternoon. Thanks, Momentum! I had a traumatic year and haven't had time to cut my own hair anymore because of being so scared. I looked like a real pig. when I would walk by the barbershop I would see masculine hunks enjoying the pleasures of one another through mutual grooming, and I wanted in. the cut itself felt so good, like I was back in the hands of my mothers hands (not my dad!!!) This is from 2/24/23. I was recommended to Momentum by Ethan Hunter Salon. Him and his wife went to Florida during this time for a few months. I went to Ethan Hunter once before he left for Florida with his wife and I loved Ethan Hunter Salon a lot. That's the best salon in Portland, ME. Before I found Ethan Hunter salon, I tried Mensroom. They had great reviews. So I booked Dee who has 20 years of experience. Nice lady. Nice place. They do a face towel thing, shoulder massage, all that stuff. But haircut was terrible. One of the worst haircuts ever. She never cut the hair behind my ears and the hair on the top of my head was cut unevenly. Nice lady but I never went there again. Now for Momentum barbershop. First off, Jason H is great. Book him. He cut my hair every single time. He messed up a little bit the first time (not a big deal, still a great haircut) but after that he was amazing. To be specific, there were 2 issues only with my first haircut with Jason H. He used a blade on the back of my neck which caused a rash probably because my neck is sensitive so I didn't want the blade anymore, not his fault. And a little too much hair was cut off on the temples. So I mentioned these so that it doesn't happen again. Otherwise the haircut was a 9.5/10. That's why I left a $10 tip for a $35 haircut and booked him again. If I didn't like Jayson H then I would never want to book him again. When I booked Jason H the 2nd time, I mentioned the small mistakes he made so that it doesn't happen again. Great guy. Great barber. Initially, when I tried to book momentum the first time, I read great reviews about Jay and how he's the owner. I accidentally booked Jason H instead of Jay (the owner). They have the same name so on the booking website it was confusing. So when I walked in the first time I had realized I made a mistake but chose to take a risk with Jason H and I'm glad I did because he's great. This review is about the rude, egotistical, childish, and just completely garbage owner Jay. I've never been disrespected by any barber in my life. The 2nd time I went to momentum, Jason H wasn't available for an appointment due to a family emergency. I didn't know this until I arrived to the barbershop. Once I arrived, the owner asked for my name and once he realized I'm the one Jason H was supposed to cut, he tells me another barber will cut me. The other barber's name is Marcelle. I don't know anything about Marcelle but to have a last minute change in a barber is unsettling. So I asked Jay if he was available (since that's who I originally wanted to book the very first time I went to momentum). My haircut was at 5:30 and Jay informed me that he won't be free until 6:30 if I wanted to wait for him. Then he told me that he'll actually be free at 6:15. I told him that I'll take the 6:15 appointment with him so I left and came back at 6:15. He was cutting someone still and I had to wait 20 minutes which I didn't mind. Once we started the haircut he asked me what I wanted. I showed him pictures. I told him the mistakes Jason H made last time (which weren't a big deal). I told him which parts to cut, which to not cut, and exactly what I wanted. To be specific, I told him to not touch the hairline, not touch the beard, make the sides straight and do a 3 down to a 2, cut 1/2 inch from the top, and thin out the top a little bit. He proceeded to cut my hair. He did the back perfectly. Sides were okay: he didn't make them straight initially so I thought in my head I'll just fix it when I get home with my trimmer since I'd rather him not ruin it and cut too much off. He then started to fix my beard on the side below my ears and I told him "not the beard please". He got clearly annoyed by that and said "I always do the side to make it straight. I know how particular YOU GUYS are about your beard". I laughed and was also really confused by that and I said back laughingly "what do you mean you guys?" He didn't respond to me and moved on, probably because he realized he said something stupid. I'm a Pakistani guy but maybe he saw me as a brown man with a beard and he assumed he knew what to do with my beard. Then he proceeded to cut and thin the top out like I requested. At this point I can't see myself in the mirror which is fine. So the only thing I noticed when he started thinning out my hair was a lot of hair falling down. I've had my hair thinned out every haircut I get (I get my haircut every 2 weeks because of how fast it grows and I get it thinned out because of how thick it is). I've never had this much hair fall down from hair being thinned out. Because I noticed how much hair was falling down, I asked nicely and calmly, "are you thinning it out a lot?". He steps in front of me and rudely says "I need you to stop micro managing me. I've been doing this for a long time. I know what I'm doing". Continued.... read more

...Continuation of review from 2/24/23 I was confused that he got offended by me asking a question about MY HAIR. So I responded "I only asked because it looks like a lot ". He ignored me and continued the haircut. As he was thinning out more hair he had paused for a bit and I briefly turned my head to the right to see myself in the mirror to make sure not too much hair was thinned out since Jay didn't want to answer my question. This brief turning of my head caused him to react extremely rudely to me. He says "you know what! I'm tired of this. You're trying to micro manage me and now you're turning your head and I'm done with this. I don't want your money. Just leave". At this point I was so shocked and confused. It's one thing if someone is rude. But it's another thing to act like this guy. This was the worst experience I've ever had dealing with anyone in any type of customer service capacity. I honestly had no idea why he was being so terrible to me. I asked him "I'm so confused. What did I do wrong? I'm sorry if I said something wrong or offended you but I don't know why you're reacting like this". He tells me "you've been nothing but negative this entire time. First you didn't want to get cut by Marcelle. Maybe you don't like his green hair. Then you wanted to get cut by me. I have been here for 11 hours and I offered to cut your hair for you. Then you want to be negative and say bad things about Mensroom. Then you want to say bad things about Ethan Hunter. Then you said Jason (Jason H) did a bad job of cutting you. Then you want to micro manage me and tell me what to do!" He said a lot more but it was all nonsense and extremely rude. Even the green hair comment about Marcelle was so stupid. After he finished yelling at me, I finally explained to him how I never said anything bad about Ethan Hunter or Jason H. I only mentioned Mensroom because it came up in the conversation about haircuts and salons in Portland. I told him how me mentioning the mistakes to Jason H (I mentioned these mistakes to Jason H in the booking website so Jay read those on his own) , wasn't me being negative. If I don't mention the things that were wrong then it will happen again. If I don't ask questions during the haircut and something gets messed up or the hair gets cut too short, then nothing can be done to fix that. Me caring about my hair and my haircut that I'm paying for and asking questions shouldn't be offensive to the person cutting my hair. The person cutting my hair should instead be more caring and receptive to questions from the person that he is cutting. I offered to Jay to talk about these things in a calm manner because all this was so frustrating and ridiculous. I've never had anyone yell at me for asking questions about my own haircut. There was another barber and a customer watching this nonsense. I was very overwhelmed and couldn't believe this was happening. Everytime I tried to explain to Jay that I didn't mean to offend him or question him in the wrong way. I just care about my haircut as everyone getting their haircut does. And everytime I tried talking he kept cutting me off. I couldn't take it anymore and I told him to let me pay him so I can leave. I was done. He kept trying to talk but it was all nonsense and the same lies and BS over and over again. I was waiting for my wife to pick me up and during that time things had calmed down and I told him I'm gonna pay and then leave. He kept refusing because he said I'm not happy with my haircut and he's not happy with the interaction. We talked calmly this time and eventually we let things go. Or I guess I let things go. I was over it and this is someone I can't deal with. He offered to fix my hair on the sides so I let him. He still didn't fix it but whatever. I payed him. Definitely no tip. I offered to shake his hand and we shook hands and hugged it out and I left. While I was waiting for my wife, he offered to give me a ride home which was nice. Maybe he had a long day. At one point during the aggressive and rude interaction, he mentioned he had a long day. I don't care if you had a long day. There's no excuse to be douche bag . Maybe something at home was bothering him. Maybe he didn't like me. Maybe he really felt offended by me asking questions. But that is a terrible thing because you can't have such a big ego and respond to questions with "how dare you ask me questions". Every barber deals with questions. Customers are paying for a service so they can ask questions. You're not giving out free haircuts so there's no reason to be rude. Getting offended by someone asking simple things in a nice and calm manner is terrible. Haircut was a 6/10. But he's the worst barber and possibly worst person I've ever dealt with. read more

Just walked out of an appointment. I went in looking to get my sides faded to a 2, and nothing off the top. Simple Enough. As the guy started buzzing my hair he kept hesitantly alternating between each side before calling over a woman, who was in the middle of cutting someone else's hair, to "give it a look over." She quickly took over as the original guy stood over me and asked questions like "why are you doing that?" and "what does that do?" After she had finished with me and apologized to the customer she had to leave, he had the gall to grab the buzzer and try to mimic the same technique THAT SHE JUST EXPLAINED TO HIM. I travel a lot and will go to different barber shops in different cities and if you're not a regular sometimes they just try to fit you in and get you out as quick as they can, but that isn't the case at all here.
