I believe that Paragon Barber Shop was Bob's Barber Shop until recently, and when you walk in there you get the impression that the new owner, a middle-aged woman who speaks limited English, slapped some new signage on the place and moved in as-is. The interior is decorated with military hats and faded posters, and when I arrived the owner was watching a subtitled movie on her laptop. An interesting mix. Regardless, I sat down for my cut and decided to get a "high and tight." She did a good job, but didn't pay too much attention to the details. She worked pretty quickly, and before I knew it I was out in the world with a fresh doo. The cut cost $15. I'm going to go back again sometimes soon to get a more consistent judgement, but if you're looking for a cut and are willing to take a chance, this place is worth a shot. read more

Paragon is in my opinion one of the most elite barber shops in Maine. They also have a location in Saco where I usually go but found myself in Portland so I stopped in to get a quick cut. I walk through the door and to my surprise my regular barber Matt I working. I was happy as he gives the best fades I've ever seen. Went in with no expectations and an open mind. I just moved to Portland and needed to find a good spot to get a haircut. I work in the Old Port so the location is key. It's got a Fore St address but is more accurately on the corner of Silver and Fore. It's got a one-chair operation and with that, it doesn't do call-aheads or appointments. Just show up. FYI cash is preferred but for a limited time you can use cards. I met "Sue" short for "Sunnam" and got a fresh cut from her, for $18. She even had me change my look a little. As I said, open mind. I appreciate her friendliness, the efficient and inexpensive cut. Looks like I found my new go-to place. read more

I've waited too long to post a review for Paragon. Time to rectify. I've been going to Sunnam since I moved to Portland four years ago. She's in the shop Mon-Thu, and someone else from her shop in Saco covers for her on Fri-Sat while she's in Saco. I love Sunnam, and always try to time my visit for her, but have also been on the weekend and that guy did a good job, too. I confess that I'm nearly bald, so my cut doesn't require much creativity or time, but she also always carefully shaves my neck as I requested on my first visit. $18 (plus tip; don't be cheap) is a very reasonable price for her attention and talent, and we always have a fun conversation. And to top it off, the shop is located at the corner of Silver and Gold! How can that not symbolize good fortune?! read more

I'm from Albany, New York and the last haircut I got was on March 10, 2020 from Sue at the Paragon Barber Shop, the last time I was in Portland. This was just before everything closed down. My hair is long, the longest it has been since the 1970's. My plan was to hold off on getting a haircut locally and wait till my next trip to Portland, which is for three nights starting on April 20. I've been to Portland the last two years during March and have visited Paragon, which was formerly Bob's. I had been to Bob's several times years ago. I like Sue. She gives a great haircut at a reasonable price and is very friendly. I think her English is somewhat limited. When I was there last year she was watching a Korean (I think) film and a customer she was tending to asked her to either switch off the film to something else or lower the volume. I thought that was very rude. But she quietly complied. So the first thing I do after I settle in at the hotel is to walk down Commercial Street, soak in the briny air and the chorus of sea gulls, and make my way to the Paragon Barber Shop on the corner of Gold and Silver streets. This is the best best barber shop in Portland. I've never been disappointed in my haircut or service. A lot of barbers/stylist struggle with fading hair but you will not be disappointed at Paragon. $15/cut is more than fair especially knowing that you will be satisfied walking out. This is a pretty straightforward barbershop and at $15 for a haircut the price is right. It's a small place. There's just a single chair. I showed up, sat down, and waited my turn. The barber worked quickly, so the wait wasn't too long even though there were three guys ahead of me. She cut my hair the way I asked her to and she did it efficiently. I was also able to watch the large tv through the mirror while getting my haircut. That was a new experience. Overall, I can't complain. This is going to be my regular spot. read more

I really like Paragon and make the 20 minute drive to get into Portland just to go here. I have always gotten a great cut from here and have been loyal since I discovered the shop about a year ago. This is definitely what I would call a traditional barber shop, minus the straight razor to clean up the back of the neck (which would be a nice touch).
