What a great place. Been with them for over 5 years now. It is a great place to sit and talk about anything and everything while getting your hair cut. Students, military and other special discounts available. Between $15-22 for all cuts. And they straight blade shave your neck. My favorite part. Walk ins welcome but they are busy most of the time in the afternoon so make an appt if you can. You can book online through Vagaro which is great and easy to do. I had a confirmed appointment with Daniel Dorbits at 3pm. I am about to leave for my xmass vacation. I have an email proving my appointment is confirmed, I had a text reminding me of the time. And I was there prior to the other appointment he double booked. This place is disrespectful, does not honor appointments so make sure you have a back up one scheduled at a real barbershop. Because this was just unprofessional and has made my trip to see my dying grandfather a horrible start because I couldn't get a hair cut to look presentable for my ill grandfather. High & Tight is a bit hard to find, tucked away within the Time and Temperature Building on Congress street. Once you do find it, it's clean and professional with a somewhat dark decor, and the owners/barbers are welcoming. I had my hair cut by Adrian, and he did an excellent job. His attention to detail was outstanding. I had actually gone in there after messing my hair up pretty badly trying to cut it on my own one night (I'm usually good at it, I swear!), and he fixed me right up. You can tell Adrian truly loves what he does, and he was a pleasure to talk to. We had a great little conversation about our families, our histories, haircutting, and the Portland area. At $18 for a cut, it's a teensy bit more expensive that some other places, but they offer discounts for seniors, children, students, military, police, fire, and ambulance works, which is nice. Even at $18 I felt it was well worth it. I think they're doing well and are busy, so it's wise to book an appointment ahead of time. read more

Patrick has been cutting my hair for years and I cannot recommend him highly enough. I'm a woman with very short hair and was frustrated paying salon prices for a stereotypically male cut. I got my haircut in late August. I wouldn't even call it a haircut, Tony BUTCHERED my hair. It went from being a semi-pomp to a mowhawk looking deal due to the amount of hair left and placed after he was done. I wasn't happy from the get-go but rather then cause friction with the "barber" I just paid for it and left. I made the mistake of telling Tony that my relatives and partner liked the haircut afterwards to avoid confrontation, even though I had shared with him after the fact that I thought it was too short, he replied with; "it's hair, it'll grow back". He even went to the workplace of my mother and asked her about it. It was all very weird. This wasn't the first time I had been to high and tight, I went once and got my haircut by a "Drake" looking dude and it was much better. Tony, leave my mother alone. I didn't like your haircut from the beginning and you couldn't handle it. Do better on the next person. read more

He knows everything about hair and hairs, including how many there are on my head and how they naturally spiral. After fumbling through my preferred cut description, he worked with me to understand what i wanted, and checked in throughout to the cut to make sure i was happy with the progress. I'll be returning. I moved to portland about 3 months ago and was putting off getting a haircut. After a while, my hair was getting all kinds of shaggy and I was in dire need for a trim. I looked around town and asked some co-workers where to go, but everything around seemed to be $30+. I wasn't looking for anything fancy, just a simple, clean, cut. Enter High & Tight. This place was fantastic, and the haircut was just as good as what I would have expected from one of the fancy salons in town. It's a small little shop with only 3 barbers, good conversation, a fridge full of beer, and only $18! Not to mention the fact that they gave me a punch card which gets me my 6th cut free! This is the only place I've tried in town and its where I plan to stay. read more

One of the worst haircuts I've had in a long time. I won't use his name. Perhaps he was new. But the barber I had was nervous. Hands shaking. I get a clipper cut. One length all over. About as simple as it gets. When he started, the clippers were pulling my hair instead of cutting the hair. He didn't seem to know what to do about it so he barely was touching my head with the clippers. This resulted in an uneven cut. Some areas looked untouched while others were too close. I give two stars because he was a nice enough guy. But the quality of the work was not good. read more

I saw Bob's review below and thought twice before deciding to make a walk in. I decided it was worth the risk, and I'm glad I did. I was given the barber who Bob reviewed negatively below. I will say that he seemed nervous and was a bit shaky, and when I asked him, he said he was new to the profession. However, he has improved significantly since Bob made his review. He cut my hair thoughtfully and explained what he was doing along the way. He took longer than normal, but that is to be expected of a new barber. At the end of the cut, a more experienced barber came to look over his work, which I appreciated. It was nice to see the more experienced members of the shop help out the new guy. The more experienced barber made some needed adjustments, but the overall cut was what I was looking for. In sum, I understand why Bob had a negative experience, but if you're looking for a cheap cut from a guy who is learning quickly, go to High & Tight. I walked out looking better than I did the last two times I got my hair cut at more expensive places in Portland (Men's Room and Momentum). Thanks! read more

I can't speak for the rest of the barbers (I they're just as great) since I've only seen Nora before, but every time I leave the place with a good haircut, a non-drained wallet and a brain full of thoughts from another interesting conversation with her. Booking online is beyond easy since you only have to reserve the time, not also pay. All in all, it's nice to relax in a quiet environment and have someone work on your hair without rushing through it. read more

Im extremely picky about people cutting my hair! There is nothing more frustrating than asking a barber for something they say they can provide and ultimately not having it delivered. This will not happen at High & Tight. Adrian delivered on an impeccable taper fade and obviously takes pride in his work. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to experience High & Tight. Showed up at 9am Monday and a Barber was working on a client at a very leisurely pace. The glass door was locked with a sign saying "closed". The hours posted indicated a 9am opening time but the barber would not open the door. Great little place! Get there early because there was already a line when it opened at 9:30am. I needed a haircut really bad and this was right across the street from my rental. My barber was incredibly nice, talkative but not too chatty, and fixed a botched job I had from a previous salon. They are definitely cash only contrary to what Yelp indicated so make sure you have the green on you. As a student always on the lookout for a good deal with quality to match, it can be difficult most times especially when it comes to haircuts. I was used to going to another larger chain hair salon where the stylists changed each time, and each end result was more variable than the last. So, for the sake of my sanity, I ventured out to High and Tight instead of my usual spot, and I was more than happy I did. The environment makes me nostalgic for an older time, and the barber shop seating was just the right touch. I don't think it would have mattered which of the barbers cut my hair because they seemed so at ease with their work and interacting with their clients. For $15 (students), you can expect a solid cut with plenty of attention to detail. Not to mention it is quick (relative to what I am used to anyway).
