I think I've been in here once before when I first moved to town but my most recent visit was to get some ingredients so I could make my own kimchi! The store isn't very big but they have a lot of stuff. I found what I thought I needed and asked the lady working if I could make kimchi with it and she said no, then walked me around to get the items I DID need and I really appreciated it! My kimchi turned out tasty, but who knows how authentic it actually is haha. One cool thing is they serve fresh kimbap on thursdays (I think), and I hear it's usually very limited quantities but I've had it before and can vouch that it's delicious! They sell their own made in-house kimchi too which looked good. They have Korean specific ingredients but also some other things that are more generally used in Asian cuisine. They're a little pricy but worth it if you need something quick! They still recommend masking (something I think it's maybe time for us to move on from...) but they don't require it, just know if you go in unmasked you may get some unpleasant looks. The owners are lovely. Wonderful selection across the board. Lots of ramens to choose from, delicious kimchi in several types, frozen foods, a few fresh veggies, a few non-food items, I hope they expand that more! Fresh foods made, I think it's on Thursdays. Update..now they even have chopsticks, rice cookers, fish, the BEST kimchi in town, and I would know because we did a side-by-side taste test LOL... They also have everything you could possibly need for sauces, huge selection of Korean Ramen, which is the best Ramen because it's got a chewy texture, a lot of frozen items added. The people who work there super nice. I recommended they start maybe doing Korean cooking classes and I hope that they do. They have a big kitchen in the back it would be perfect. With its plain exterior, small sign and obscure location (behind a carpet store on N. Atherton), this little gem of a grocery store can easily be missed. Look for the little red sign stating Korean Market. This place is no H-Mart nor Assi, perhaps a mini H-Mart but that may still be a stretch. I shop here when I feel like whipping up Korean eats. Late afternoons on Thursdays is probably the best time to visit this grocery store. This is when the fresh grocery arrives and they have a good selection of prepared Korean foods (just polished off the kimbap that I purchase here today, it was tasty). read more

If you're looking specifically for Korean ingredients/goods, this is your stop. Exceptionally clean on the inside, their sign outside is in hangul, so just look for the Korean lettering by the carpet store. There's a good selection for the space - there's dry/packaged foods on the left and produce on the right, and if you come on Thursday (I think), they're usually selling some prepared food (there's a kitchen on the back; I got the kimbap and some rice balls last time and all was good). Slight markup from typical prices, but hey, it's the only Korean store in Happy Valley. Definitely try to come on Thursdays - that's when the produce is fresh in, though their goods are very clean/nicely packaged and keep for a while in the fridge if you don't need it right away. Slight discount if you pay with cash, and the man at the register is so nice. read more

This is a small Korean market and the owners are really sweet/nice. THURSDAY after 4p is the day to go since that's when they have delivery trucks from DC arrive with fresh food items. The owner is the only cashier so it can take awhile to checkout. They trucks bring prepared foods like soups, fried chicken and side dishes. The owner's wife and a couple of other ladies in the back are making kimchi that they sell. If you bring back a kimchi container they recycle them and give you up to $0.25 depending on the size. Also if your total is over $20 and you use cash they give you a 2% discount. (Hey any discount is better than None, right?) I would say this place is better than Far Corners for Korean food items but if you want pan-Asian, Far Corners is better bet. read more

Momezon is a small Korean market, and by small, I mean small. Here they do have some frozen food and whatnot, but there isn't really much variety. Probably the most useful frozen food you'll find are frozen potstickers. The whole market consists of probably 5 small aisles of miscellaneous instant foods and beverages. The only real reason I'd come here is for all the nice Korean side dishes here. They make them every Thursday, so it's pretty fresh. Unfortunately, it's not quite the quality of the Korean dishes in CA or NY. For State College standards though, it shall do just fine. read more

Dae~~~Bak!! I just recently moved to Center County from Korea and was excited to find State College had a good Korean store. The owners are super nice and extremely helpful. If they don't have it chances are great they can order it for you. If you are looking for Korean ingredients, snacks, amazing banchan/kimchi and/or Korean foods this is the place to go! With that being said they are not big box H-Mart with every and anything Korean available. It is a tad pricey for items that you can get at other local Asian Markets, but they have tons of Korean specific stuff that you cannot get anywhere else. On Thursdays the truck comes in with all new stuff and they do homemade Korean meals and snacks, tons of yummy items like bibimbap, duk bokki, fresh koreans breads and pastries. The owners are so much more friendly than other Asian markets in the area. You kinda want to shop there just to support such a nice family. read more

OMG What the heck?? I believe I have shopped at every asian, mexican etc store in the area. I HAD stopped in at Momezon on a non-Thursday and thought..how do they stay open? They are BEHIND a carpet store, have no decent signage...nothing in-store I can't get anywhere else. Then someone tipped me off to Thursdays. WOW!!!!!! What a difference! The place was hopping! I am pretty quick to try anything, but asked a few shoppers to help me understand what each PREPARED, HOT DISH was being catered in for customers. I got one that looked like bread wrapped in foil. To my thrilling surprise, it was a sushi roll! I got 'rice mix in veggies' and they were decent. I also got a spicy tofu. OHMYGOSH AMAZING!!! I also saw their homemade Kimchi. HUGE LEAVES, not the small ones they have in jars. These were in plastic bags! What a find! I hope their menu changes week to week. Also, the owner rang me up and he was adorable and funny and sweet. A younger guy was next to him, possibly his son? He was a big help. Next time, Im getting the $20 boxed up fried chicken! Everyone was leaving with it! If you are wondering what is in a container, ask! I almost left with a styrofoam container of chicken feet...um..yuck. LOL I'm not that brave! I DO SUGGEST two things. First, label the CONTAINERS with what they are. Even the Koreans near me didn't know what each dish was. Just slap on a sticker for things you usually carry! Second, get a real sign. No where that I saw, outside of the building, did it say MOMEZON! read more
