Servers were able to accommodate our table of 8 by using two separate tables that seat four which made our wait shorter. To handle the bustling environment, they work very fast and are very straight forward while still remaining friendly. It's important to note that they were working hard literally running around the restaurant the whole time and didn't miss a thing we ordered so props to them. Restaurant was pretty busy walking in, small wait for seats, not really decorated but had a cute fish tank. When seated, cups weren't exactly dirty but there was some sort of residue on the outside of them. Seats were a little scratched up but overall the cleanliness wasn't awful. Food took a bit to come out, yet we still received EVERYTHING fresh and warm. All of the food bursted with an abundance of flavor which I didn't expect. Our family loved the soft shell crab and calamari which had the most flavor, and some may say it was salty but I think it was perfect. However, it was a bit disappointing that there were two dishes they couldn't serve us from the menu because they ran out which were clams and snow peas. The only takeback from the food was the Seafood fried rice lacking in proteins and veggies and was mainly just rice. It just had squid (I think) and shrimp (lacking in variety of seafood) with minimal peas and carrots. Overall, the service was wonderful and the food was delicious. We ordered several dishes (pics shown) but killed them all and our plates were clean with nothing to takeout. Diane and I had a great time here devouring several dishes at dinner time once we went up the correct staircase. The restaurant sits just outside a wall that demarks Montreal's Chinatown. The menu is huge, which is good for picky eaters like Diane. It features numerous Cantonese staples and a few special surprises. Fortunately we were seated at a large round table at our reservation time. We needed one to hold everything we ordered. First up was a large bowl of Pork and Shrimp Wonton Soup, hot and with a very tasty broth, Bok Choy, and delicious wontons filled with both pork and shrimp. This was followed by Ha Gao Shrimp in a basket and an eye-popping array of TEN well-bronzed Pan-Fried Pork Dumplings. Somehow we finished all of them. Soy Sauce here is delivered only in packets, and Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce is available in place of Hot Chili Oil. We were told by our English-speaking waitress that diners have to pay more for extra requested sauces. But I didn't care, so we also received Hoisin Sauce and an addictive light Sweet & Sour Sauce. Another unusual circumstance is that no sugar substitutes are available. Only sugar is served here. Our entrees, brought out one by one but quickly linked, included delicious Beef Stir Fry with Ginger and Scallion, and requested added mushrooms; Shrimp Crispy Noodles Chow Mein; Shrimp Fried Rice, which contained small peas and carrots in Brown Sauce and was dark brown in color but tasted very good; and Diane's specially ordered Cashew Shrimp in Brown Sauce. A mound of Steamed White Rice was also prepared on point. We ate 3/4 of what was placed before us. Otherwise our stomachs might have burst! Service from multiple staff members was good. Prices were reasonable. Piped in jazzy instrumental music added to our enjoyment of the meal. And the cooking in the kitchen was simply great. Delicious! We had three dishes to share, and we loved them all. The Mongolian beef and general Tao's chicken were so crispy, and the lo mein was great. The sauce served with the egg rolls was very good and nothing like I've had before. These dishes weren't what I'm used to when I order them (I'm in the southern US), but I was not disappointed about that. Prices are a little high, but the food is worth it. Our group of 7 enjoyed our family-style dinner at Mon Nan in Montreal Chinatown. Specifically, we wanted to get Peking duck in Chinatown and this restaurant delivered not only that, but other authentic (and Westernized) Chinese dishes plus good service. While I wouldn't characterize the food as great, it was good and about what I expected of a restaurant like this: a classic, old-school, Chinese restaurant experience. Being from out of town, Yelp and Yelpers in Montreal (http://bit.ly/31148DC) helped me discover this place. Mon Nan has been around since 1982. This restaurant has stood the test of time. Mon Nan is situated on the north end of Chinatown, right next to the Chinatown gate. The street that it sits on, Rue de la Gauchetiere E, is pedestrian-only. However, you can be dropped off right next to the restaurant on St Dominique St. Mon Nan is located on the 2nd floor of a larger building it shares with other businesses. I called ahead same-day and made Friday night 7pm reservations for our group. Unlike other Chinese restaurants, you don't have to order Peking duck in advance with Mon Nan. You can just show up and order it. The dining room isn't huge, but big enough. They have several round tables with Lazy Susans. All tables are covered in white tablecloths and the servers wear uniforms. At night, the dining room is dimly-lit with ambient, color-changing, mood lighting. During our time at the restaurant, it was moderately busy. Mon Nan is one of those Chinese restaurants with a huge menu. There are about 250 dishes. Their spiral-bound menus are well-worn with many stickered-over price changes from over the years. The back of the menu features preset multi-course dinners for roughly $18-20 per person. We didn't go with one of those, but instead opted to choose our own dishes. Here's what we went with (with menu numbers): 26. Pan-fried pork dumplings - 20 dumplings for $19.90 P43. Peking duck 3-course meal - $58.00 63. Orange chicken - $12.95 84. Salt and pepper shrimp - $17.95 95. Cashew shrimp - $13.95 186. Chinese broccoli with garlic sauce - $10.95 239. Chicken fried rice - $10.95 * Mateus Rose - $24.00 * Gekkeikan Black & Gold sake - $49.00 * Soda - $2.25 After tax, the total bill for the 7 of us was $256.28 or $36.61 per person plus tip (Canadian). Not cheap, but not crazy expensive either. I'd say it's reasonable for what we got. The Peking duck was delicious. Serving styles vary among restaurants. Some restaurant serve it with bone, others without. Mon Nan served it without, which I prefer. The skin was delectable and the meat quality was average in terms of taste and texture (not bad). Mon Nan's Peking duck is listed at "SP" (special price) on the menu. As listed above, we were charged $58 for our order. This allowed each of us to make 1 or 2 wraps among the 7 of us. I personally would've liked another order, but preferences differed (hence how we ended up with dishes like orange chicken and chicken fried rice). The Peking duck 3 courses consisted of a bone-in duck and tofu soup with mustard greens and scallions; the Peking duck itself served with warm pancake wraps in a wooden basket, shredded scallion, pickled daikon radish and carrots, and hoisin sauce; and stir-fried noodles. The soup and noodles were A-OK. The soup was light and flavorful. For the noodles, we had the choice of two styles: Cantonese or Shanghai. We chose the Shanghai. The noodles were very similar to lo mein. The pan-fried pork dumplings were very tasty. I recommend them. The dumplings were large, filling, and savory. They were a little bit oily. I liked the relatively thick and delectably-charred dumpling skins. The pork inside was hot and tender. The dumplings came with a dipping sauce made of soy sauce, vinegar, and ginger. While basic and Westernized, the orange chicken and chicken fried rice were fine. They served their purpose and were satisfying enough. The chunks of orange chicken were covered in a somewhat crispy batter smothered in a dark, rich, sweet sauce. There wasn't much in the chicken fried rice besides chicken and rice; no veggies or any other ingredients. The dish lacked color and was brown throughout from soy sauce. The Chinese broccoli with garlic sauce was good. The vegetable was fresh and there was a generous portion of both leafy greens and firm, crunchy stalks. If you need to supplement your meal with a vegetable, this is a definitely an option I'd suggest. I didn't eat either of the shrimp dishes because I'm allergic to shrimp so I can't comment on them. However, all of my friends seemed to like both dishes as the plates were wiped clean. Service was good, from the hostess to the various servers. I could tell these folks have been at it for a while. When we ran out of space on our Lazy Susan, they brought stands for us to stagger plates. They also kept our Black & Gold sake on ice in a bucket on a stand next to our table. Decided to come here after the imax cinema with a couple friends as my friend told me her friend loves it here! We found it at the end of a street that was Doing some construction work but once we hit the corner you can see the lights changing colors in the room from the outside window and with a large crowd eating we knew it was gonna be great. Sat down and had a pitcher of water and tea brought to us which was well needed after the walk in the rain to find this place. There is a million options so I would suggest going with a big group because you can't finish it all. We chose peanut butter dumplings which were fantastic and spring rolls were really fresh and home made. Salt and pepper shrimp are probably the best I've ever had you must try. It's ok. We don't eat Chinese often bc of the carbs and hidden sugars. But wanted to try a place in Montreal. Recommended by the hotel. Hit or miss on the dishes. Stellar: green beans without pork. Very good but far too greasy (but so nicely flavored): salt and pepper shrimp. Not bad: Peking pork appetizer though I now know I prefer moo shoo pork. Family rice for four is enormous. More like for 6 or 8. We didn't finish half the bowl. Not good at all: General Tsos chicken and the sesame beef. Loved the automatic tea pot delivered to your table. Service quick and efficient. Not necessarily in order and they did forget my husbands egg roll. We had plenty of leftovers but it was the dishes we didn't like so... those two were almost all batter. Very little meat. It's like one step up from your local cheap delivery place. But it's packed with a line for the past 90 min. Very diverse clientele. Tip for out of towners-- from old town to here it took us straight through a homeless encampment as we walked there from our hotel by one of the smaller cathedrals-- a Chinese catholic missionary church. Every one has different sensitivities but I'd definitely avoid at night. Our idiot hotel didn't have our room ready when we ended our 10-hour journey. They didn't even have a good dinner recommendation but told us our room would be ready after we had dinner. But I digress. We went for a walk and stumbled into this place. It was mostly full, but we were given a table after just a couple of minutes. Food came fast, and it was very tasty and huge portions. On my first visit to Montreal, I definitely wanted to try some local Chinese food. I assume the Canadian Chinese food would be superior to the average Mid-western or Chicago offerings, and this restaurant does not disappoint. We arrived around 9:30 and 2/3s of the tables were full, and it actually got busier as the night progressed. There was a variety of different people, families, couples, groups of friends hanging out. Great mix of people! The ambiance was clean, nice blue mood lights, and clean bathrooms! I think its tough to be great at everything when your menu is so vast like Mon Nan, and based on other reviews it seems like it's hit or miss. Fortunately for my wife and I, both of our dishes were hits! We really wanted to order 5 different things, but our lodging was at Campus1 MTL and there's no fridge. My wife was scouting what other Chinese people were ordering, and saw that the black bean and garlic clams was ordered 3 times tonight. Most of the non Chinese people were eating the fried meat and sweet sauced Chinese American dishes. We were craving seafood so that definitely made the cut. We also ordered Lobster E-Mein. Pro tip, even if it's not on the menu, doesn't mean the chef's can't pull it off! Our waiter made us feel at home with some excellent house soup. Hot, slightly sweet, and fragrant, great way to prep our stomachs for some real work! The clams were excellent, fresh, with a satisfying chew and meatiness to them. The sauce was a tad on the salty side, but it didn't overpower the garlic and black bean. We demolished the first dish just in time for the lobster noodles to drop in. The lobster rocked! There was a nice char to the coating to give the crust a smokey flavor. The meat was well prepared, moist, and delicious. It struck a balance between chewy and tender. Mon Nan's chef's prepared an exquisite plate of noodles to absorb the fragrant lobster. The firmness was chewy, not too doughy, with the right amount of resistance. Went here for dinner with my parents and some out of town guests. It was my first time in this restaurant. My parents normally order "x course meals" (replace x with a number) as opposed to ordering "a la carte" and this restaurant didn't really advertise their "x course meals". These meals generally come with a soup, a vegetable dish, a few seafood dishes, a chicken dish, a lobster dish, rice, and a fish dish at a slightly lower price than ordering all the items separately. My parents received a menu showing the "a la carte" options. When the waiter showed up to our table, he asked my parents if they would prefer one of the meals as opposed to ordering "a la carte" and my parents answered yes. He then outlined what was available. We had the duck which were slices of duck on a plate with some wrap on another plate and some pickled slice vegetables/carrots (somewhat similar to coleslaw). It was like a make your own Asian/Chinese burrito. There were also some plates of sauce. Since I didn't order, I'm assuming that this was the Peking duck and it was my first time having/trying this. I guess it is popular in some parts of China but I'm more used to the Cantonese type of food so it was the first time for me trying this. I found it to be good. The looks of the food are great, popping colors and a lot of it in each plate. Even tho the food is nice it has not taste. I went with my family and did not order lobster or duck. BIG MISTAKE. We asked if we could have the food as spicy as possible and they said ok yet the food was no spicier than ketchup. I was on the hunt for Peking Duck in Chinatown. The first time I tried it was in Chicago - we had 5 courses and I was completely fascinated how every part of the duck is salvaged into a different Meal- literally nothing is wasted! I walked into Mon Nan with no expectations- since I've never had it in Montreal. Recommended by a friend - this place was in the 2nd floor. Chinatown standard white plastic table cloths, scattered utensils on the table, sides of ketchup, soya sauce. The menu had a lot of choices but we had one thing in mind -peking duck! 25$ for half for 50$ for the whole duck served in 3 dishes: 1- tofu based soup- broth was excellent, perfectly salted and seasoned, with chunks of fresh tofu and, shallots and cooked duck. 2-5 crepes, duck with sides of pickled radish and carrots, shallots and a chutney type sauce (looked like siracha mixed with hoison sauce - not spicy) these were by far my favourite. Down side- where I take away a couple of stars - hair in my pickled radish - I was grossed out. They replaced it brand new - but hygiene is a big factor for me. Hair equals gross. 3-duck chow mein with crispy noodles-nothing special about this dish. Tasted like regular take out. I like that the duck did not smell, and was thorough cooked. Considering we ordered a half portion, our server did not cut it in front of us - which is the most entertaining part of having peking duck! Dessert - complimentary orange slices and fortune cookies. Commonly known as the best Pekin duck in mtl (according to my chinese friends) This restaurant used to be on Clark second floor, across from maison VIP, but now it's moved to la gauchetiere and st-dominique, first floor. If you come here you have to get the Pekin duck, it's their best dish bar none. My only complaint is you never seem to get enough pancakes, and when you order more it takes a long time to come... Pekin duck is a 3 dish affair, they use the whole duck. Comes with soup first from the bones, then it's the Pekin duck with pancakes sauce and pickled carrots and dicon radish. Lastly chop suey with duck meat, you can ask them to turn this dish into a noodle dish for an extra charge. The salt baked squid is quite good, good saltiness and mildly crispy and soft inside. The mongolian beef here is decent except it's just too sweet... sweet and sour pork here is just average, nothing to crow about. It's one of my favorite dishes eventhough according to my chinese friends it's not authentic chinese but more north american chinese... Whatever one of them told me general tao's was not a real sichuan dish... low and behold i went to China no less and found it on their menu... turns out it's a real sichuan dish except they use sichuan peppercorn in china but not here, something to do with customs and peppercorn pest infestation... so there's variations in north american and chinese versions of dishes... All in all, it's just like all the chinese restaurants in chinatown MTL, they're all about same same, except they make one dish better that anyone else, and this one has the best Pekin duck. read more

I was in downtown on a Monday at 3am, quite hungry at that moment. Looked for a Chinese place and saw that this one was open until 4am, cool. Decided to go there, quite modern. One of the waiters was pushing me to order before the kitchen closes, showing a very grumpy attitude with his Chinese accent, so I asked what would he suggest, and he was even more rude "I don't know you, I don't know what you like, read the menu ", hahahahhaa, that was hilarious, an stereotypical Chinese man giving me hard time, it was so funny, it adds it to the whole kind of underground experience at 3:30am. Additionally you would see entering all these amazing hot babes that I'm pretty sure worked at strip bars because of their make ups and super tiny dresses at 3:30am on monday. Being pushed by the old man, I kind of picked the first thing I saw on the menu. See attached picture, I didn't like it that much because I feel it lacked more meat. But that was only my bad choice, cuz I saw other people's plate and they looked delicious. So I'm pretty sure I will come back any other time I will be partying downtown. This place was a big let down for me, china town has so many places to choose from that I don't think I'd be back here. Arriving at the restaurant the decor was simple but very nice they had an aquarium with a good variety of fish in it. Once we sat down and opened up the menu we saw that there were over 200 choices of different food items. With so many options I felt overwhelmed in what to pick, I ended up going with sesame beef because it's been something I'm familiar with along with a Won ton soup and peanut butter dumplings. The best part of the meal was by far the soup it hit all the right flavours and the broth was not watery at all. The sesame beef was to acidic and I honestly didn't finish it, as for the peanut butter dumplings those were to spicy and the filling was tough and bland. To top it all off the service was not great it took about 20 minutes for someone to take our order and we never saw the waiter after that till he brought us our bill before we even finished :/ Try this place out and hopefully you'll have a better experience read more

Mon Nan has a cozy, late night atmosphere with their diffused LED wall lighting that gradually changes colour every few minutes. You'll notice a fish tank and a lobster tank by the entrance, so you know the lobster is as fresh as it gets. That said, for some reason we ordered beef, shrimp and duck. The duck was a greasy mess, not crispy as advertised. The shrimp was similarly lacklustre. If there's one thing these guys do well, though, it's beef. We enjoyed both the broccoli beef and BBQ beef ribs and were satisfied with both. The service is typical of a Chinese restaurant; nothing fancy, and personally that's how I like it. Tea is on the house as you might expect. What you can't beat is their schedule, they're open until 4AM, so it's perfect for those late night cravings. Overall I was satisfied. When you ask for traditional Peking duck, they offer you two options: deep fried (called crispy with veggies) duck or BBQ duck. Neither of which are actual Peking duck. I've been going here since the mid-eighties. Food and service have ranged from okay to outstanding over the years, but they've never served me anything resembling a bad plate, and they have never screwed up my order. Our waiter and busboy this past Sunday evening were really on the job, and the food was just what the doctor ordered. The pan-fried dumplings and the Chinese broccoli in garlic sauce were standouts, and the Cantonese chow mein and beef with two kinds of mushrooms weren't disappointing. Perfect rice and drinkable tea completed the order. We ate all the bits of it. Restroom was usable without gagging. That's not always been the case. Despite its austere decor and lighting, and cyclically unpleasant loos, this place remains my go-to Chinese spot in Montreal. Why?
