I was introduced to MNM, by my longtime friend of seven years, Jennie, on October 28, 2013. I have volunteered at another mission on Skid Row for years, but MNM is different, refreshingly different for me. With my schedule, and living in Riverside, it was hard to get to Skid Row during the day to help anymore. The fact that MNM hits Skid Row around 8:30pm, was a perfect fit for me. My twin Nessa and I served with my friends from Oxnard that first night, and we have been serving ever since. October 28, 2014 marks our first year with MNM, and it has been an amazing year. We have developed genuine friendships with people we serve alongside, as well as our homeless brothers and sisters on Skid Row. When I first met MNM founder Mel Tillekeratne, I was amazed by his compassion and his commitment to the people he serves. I was really intrigued by him, and wondered what drove him to do what he does with MNM. Over the past year, I have watched him practice what he preaches. Some people simply give lip service to what they feel should be done in the world, that guy simply does it. He teaches me, there is always room to do more for others. With MNM, there's isn't any red tape to get through, no waiting list. We aren't a registered non profit, we are simply people of all different faiths, walks of life, that share one common thing, the belief that everyone deserves a good meal. It's simple, all are welcome to serve with us. Serving others isn't for everyone, I get that. But for anyone who wants to experience homelessness in one of the richest cities in the world, with no filter, should check Monday Night Mission out. Los Angeles' homeless situation will be in your face, showing you how THOUSANDS struggle on any given night on the streets of Skid Row. It puts a face on homelessness, and the reality of their struggles on the street. Mel said something to me when we first met a year ago, and it has stayed with me since; he said "It doesn't matter to me what circumstances landed someone on Skid Row. All I know is that there are people down there that are hungry, and we're going to feed them". That is why I serve with MNM, because everyone deserves a good meal, every single one of us. I'm honored to stand shoulder to shoulder with people I love, and share meals, laughter, hugs, smiles and hope. Be remembered for your character, not your indifference.

I love helping out here! Mel is a great guy and is doing such a great thing for the people who live on skid row. If your thinking about volunteering with them you should definitely do it!

For almost two years I have been developing the memoirs of a man, now one of my dear friends, who had lived the the streets of downtown LA for nearly 16 years. Homeless, drug addicted, as bad as it gets. I came to the part of my research where I needed to see first hand what my friend experienced. I looked into several Missions and groups that went downtown to feed and help homeless. I came across Monday Night Mission by happenstance. It also seemed to be the most flexible and the most friendly and chose them to aid in my experience. I didn't imagine I would use the word 'fun' when describing feeding homeless on Skid Row...but it was fun. It was also exciting. I had driven through Skid Row, walked along the outskirts during the day and have heard countless stories from my friend but I had never really been in the epicenter that IS Skid Row: 6th and San Julian. Initially it's a little overwhelming when you first step out of the safety of your car and walk the block and a half to get to the designated area to distribute food. But we walked in a group and safety measures were always taken. People who weren't handing out food created a barrier around the people who were, facing outward to keep an eye on things and alert Mel or one of the others of impending trouble. I held this position a few times and witnessed all sorts of things you'd only see in movies. The unimaginable was suddenly right in front of me, playing out live like an Anderson Cooper special. There were fights, drug deals and a friend I brought with me had a guy shoot up right in front of him. When I handed out food I saw the faces of poverty, the victims of the deinstitutionalization movement and drug addicts left to their own devices. Some people took food from us and didn't say thank you or even make eye contact. Some refused what we were offering because they didn't like it. One woman told me bottled water was the Devil's work. Another showed me his stunning yet chaotic artwork in a dirty notebook. One short Armenian man told us his name was Elvis Presley. It is simply what is and there are all kinds on The Row. It's not required but many volunteers bring food donations like bananas, oranges, loaves of bread, jars of peanut butter and jelly and healthy snacks. One of the times I went I cleared the shelf at the store of all their Hostess apple pies (sugary treats aren't a good idea I later found out...little interest in personal dental care for many). When one was handed to an older homeless gentleman along with a bottle of water and a sandwich the biggest grin spread across his face. "I haven't had one of these since I was a kid!" That one statement made my whole year. It's been awhile since I've been able to join MNM (deadlines and kitten rescuing) but when I'm able to I will. It's an incredible experience as long as you do it for the right reasons. It's not just about handing a person a pb&j sandwich. It's the smile and the 'hello' that you give with it. It's telling someone that you like their t-shirt or their hat. It's about being kind to another human being who is struggling to survive.

I've been serving with Monday Night Mission for a year now and i must say this organization is one of the best i've been part of. If you are looking to serve or donate your time, Monday Night Mission is the place you want to start with. Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean. By: Ryunosuke Satoro

Mel, the organizer is pretty clear and makes you feel safe but is also very clear on the dangers on skid row.

After losing our previous bunny unexpectedly, which totally wrecked us, we found immense comfort and support through this incredible community of rabbit lovers. Lejla, Jane, and the long-time volunteers are exceptionally knowledgeable about bunny care and wellness, and they truly care about every single animal. Bunnies are not "easy" pets, so having a whole community to lean on and ask questions around the clock makes the world of difference. Because of BWF, I've become a much better caretaker in providing a suitable environment, proper diet, and grooming. Fostering Popcorn and Zoe has been such a joy. It's unfortunate that people tend to overlook REWs (Ruby-Eyed Whites) because of their eyes, but Zoe is brilliant! She's a smart girl who has recently started zooming and binkying the second she hears the fridge open up until you set that nice plate of greens down. While she prefers her enclosure, if you step into her space, she'll happily demand pets and treats. Popcorn is a curious guy who explores the house every day as if it's his first time seeing it yet we can completely trust him not to chew on anything! He earned his name from the hilarious midair body shakes during his binkies, witnessing one will absolutely make your day. He is notorious for his afternoon nap flops as well. Zoe is definitely the dominant one, which means Popcorn grooms her every single day. We can always tell when Zoe tries to return the favor because she's... not great at it. Popcorn ends up looking like he just rolled out of bed! Both of them are incredibly well-behaved, used to being groomed, and will happily sit in your lap for hours during a grooming session. Hopefully Popcorn and Zoe can find their perfect forever home where they will have more space to binky and explore! If you are looking to adopt, foster, or support a rescue that truly knows and cares for rabbits, Bunny World Foundation is an amazing option.

Speaking of which, organizations that do…read morereally well in doing so much good for the community should receive more of the recognition and support they deserve! :) The nonprofit is the base that hosts volunteer activities initiated by different groups all over the city. It is the hub from which various other nonprofits voice and turn the wheels of their projects. Even a recent Yelp Beach Cleanup event, associated with Heal the Bay, required volunteers to sign up first with LA Works. For MLK's Day, LA Works planned a morning at Rosemont Elementary where hundreds of people, most of them a part of their employer company (ex. Target, Home Depot, JP Morgan, Accenture), showed up to help revitalize the campus. A radio station came prepared with dancing and music to jumpstart the day. Volunteers were assigned letters and numbers, then told to report to their assigned tasks. It was all very organized and efficient. They cleaned the computer labs, classrooms, storage room and rec room. Adults and kids alike transformed drab brown walls into a playground of rainbows and sunshine. Snacks, juice and water were available throughout the event. Following, food trucks showed up, some of which were either prepaid by the organization or declined to charge. You can become a volunteer by signing up for an account - and then going through their available search options for projects you would be interested in. I like looking through their calendar for a big picture of their activities. Some projects, like anything that has to do with animals, are hot and fill up faster than others. Clicking on the individual project listing will provide a detailed description and, more importantly, the geographical location/zip code. Trust me, the easier it is to get there, the more available and willing you are to enjoy the event, maybe even on a weekly basis.

I look forward to helping out with future events. Thank you again!
