We recently returned from a 12 day trip in Italy, 5 days in Florence and 5 days on the Amalfi Coast. It was recommended on Rick Steve's blog to use Monetti's Taxi as a way to get around the Amalfi Coast when one does not have a car. Such a great recommendation! The Monettis Taxi is a family owned busines. I primarily dealt with the son Raffaele online prior to the trip; he was very good about following up within a day on all my emails. Then, to our delight, we met Carmelo, the Italian papa of the family, waiting for us at the Naples train station with a sign with our name. Enroute to our hotel in Sorrento, Carmelo chatted about Naples, Italian politics, the Mafia, Mount Vesuvius, the many figures of history and the movies who have come from the Amalfi Coast area, life in his hometown of Sorrento, the foods and produce of Sorrento and he also gave us some good recommendations for restaurants and gelato in Sorrento. He stopped along the way at a couple of picturesque points to take our picture. The cost was $110 euros, pricey, but then Naples is crazy and confusing, it was Liberation Day week and we wanted our transition points to be smooth. We used Carmelo for not only our drive to Sorrento and back again, but also for a 4-hour excursion a couple of days later along the Amalfi Coast. It was $200 for the three of us and we were the only passengers in his black Mercedes Benz, so a very personalized tour. For $260 we could have done a full day which would have included time for lunch and walking around another city Ravello; the half day was just right for us. Carmelo shared wonderful information about Positano and Amalfi and identified specific things to notice along the way; he gave us ample time to meander around both cities. We also stopped for a ride through the Emerald Grotto which is half way between the two cities. He proved to be a champion driver who could hit the pedal when needed as on the way back to the Naples train station on our last day three cruise ships came into the port at Sorrento and traffic was backed up for miles. Carmelo took a back route up into the hills above the coastline bypassing the terrible traffic, made his way through the congested Naples traffic and then parked and ran with us carrying some of our bags and helped us make our train with only seconds to spare. Without his knowledge of the area and his concern for us, we would never have made it. Definitely worth the money to use Monetti's! read more
