Decided on the bowl by weight. No way my small bowl was over $33. Sheesh. But, they said it was. The starter soup... just no. My friend got the hot and sour. I got the broccoli coconut. Mine had no trace of coconut and both were watered down but we were hungry and ate them. The food at the 'trough' looked fine. The bowl was weighed and we had a seat. It wasn't busy but the food took a long time to grill. Both our food was cooked until black. Is the grill never cleaned? Why can't we watch the food being cooked like at the last Mongolian Grill I had been to? Any scallops I had in there was gone as in too cooked/disintegrated and everything was the same charred colour. I had a small 5oz glass of red wine. It was good but almost $12 for a few sips. The rice at the table in a thermos was severely overcooked. Skipped that. Too bad. I love rice. Also, skipped the stale wraps on the table meant for the food. No... way. How old were they? Liked the hot handwipes at the end of the meal and the fortune cookie was fresh. That's it... no other reason to return here. Cost way exceeds quality. And I came home hungry... I haven't been here since the pandemic but I used to come here a ton with family. The food is delicious as you get to build your own stirfry to put with bottomless rice. You pay by weight of everything in the stir fry bowl before it gets cooked so beware of how much liquid (sauce) you put in since that can sneak the price up on you. We love going out to this place, and eating out is a real treat usually, but my experience tonight was awful enough to make me question ever going back... We arrived around 530, and the restaurant was about half full, and many people were eating. Our server greeted us and offered us soup - i accepted, and my companion declined. A few minutes later, she came back with two soups, and before we had a chance to protest, she was gone. Once we straightened out which soup was mine, we were brought a steamer of rice and two sets of wraps, almost an hour before our food arrived. My companion asked right away for more wraps because we both use several packages (#1). This was around 545. I ate my soup, and we went and selected our food to be stir-fried. While waiting, we noticed that there were 7 or 8 dishes ahead of us, but we were ok. The wait would be worth it. So we waited and waited and waited. There was no way 8 dishes were taking this much time. At 642, i asked our server about the dishes and the length of the wait. I also reminded her that we needed extra wraps (#2), and she went away to see about the delay. She came back and explained they were very busy (half the tables were full at this point), and our food would be another 15 minutes. At this point, we began to get annoyed, and we were discussing whether to stay and wait. Shortly thereafter, a different server arrived with 2 plates. My companion immediately identified that her plate was wrong. It was covered in noodles, and she had not put ANY on her dish. This is when we get up and prepare to leave. Yet another server, later identified as the manager, brushes by us and places two plates on our table. Who knew what happened to the plate she had been previously offered, but they had found her dish. Not wanting to waste the food or create a scene, we decided to accept the food, despite its presentation, and eat what we had ordered. No surprise, we ran out of wraps, and my food got cold as we waited for our server to bring something we had been asking for all night. My spicy dinner was hot enough to finish the water i had been given over an hour and a half ago, and despite my efforts to attract our server's attention, my glass went unfilled. As a matter of fact, our server abandoned us completely. We had to go to the bar to pay and when i asked to speak to the manager. I was told our issue was resolved, and he was completely unappologetic. Did i mention the two other tables that arrived after us, ordered the same service, and were gone before we were even served. Now clearly our food was forgotten or somehow the order for cooking was mixed up... and all we wanted was to have the situation acknowledged and perhaps an appology from the manager. Instead, we left even more upset by the behavior of the manager. Mongolian Village, you lost more than a tip tonight. You lost a regular customer. read more

While I enjoyed my meal at Mongolian Village, and the flavor/meal choice is entirely up to us as we specifically choose our ingredients to be cooked, I was not completely thrilled with the overall experience. I realize the majority of it is self sufficient, drinks and other accoutrements are still required, and I found the service a bit lack luster. The gentlemen cooking the food didn't seem particularly enthused to be their either. It was a very direct and purposeful transaction rather than a pleasant dining experience. I would not go so far as to say it was bad, just unusual for Canada and not as nice as it could have been. Since the food is charged by weight, and my eyes are usually bigger than my tummy, and I always want to try everything I see, this place is dangerous for me - great chance to try a bit of everything, but it adds up really quickly! read more

I came here for a solo-dinner after a busy day of work, before a busy evening of more work. I was in a hurry, but was not in the mood for fast food, so I opted for Mongolian Village (West). I had been here before, and it used to actually be one of my favourite, go-to restaurants before I learned how to cook more dishes for myself. The first thing I noticed was how empty it seemed to be. It is possible that this was due to time of day, I got in around 5pm, but there were only 2-3 tables seated. Next, I figured one reason why was because they have certainly increased their prices. Since it's a spot where you are charged based on weight of your food- an increase means you're paying more for less, and I could see how it would be a bit off-putting. If you're not familiar with this spot, you get to pick your raw foods in a bowl, flavour them yourself with a variety of sauces, and then the chef cooks them up for you after weighing your bowl of ingredients. I can appreciate the selection of meats and seafood they have for you. I especially like that they have a couple of Halal options. The veggie choices are pretty good too, I'm a big fan of the baby corn and water chestnut options. I can't be disappointed in the flavour and blame it on the restaurant, since I chose the sauces and ingredients myself. I didn't make the greatest choices that night, but the food was still cooked well. I will say that service was quick, which was great, and it provided a decent alternative to fast-food, though the price tag was much larger. I still enjoyed my meal, and would return... though I do wish their prices would stop increasing without any extra value. read more

I came here for the first time with a group of about 8-9 people for a friend's going away dinner. I was warned ahead of time that it was a pay by weight kind of restaurant. We ordered drinks while we waited for everyone to arrive. I got the Pacific Rim Fire Caesar, which had Stoli Vodka, Mott's Clamato Juice, sriracha, fish sauce, a spiced bean, & an olive. I thought it was an interesting mix of ingredients and it would have been great, but it tasted a little watered down and wasn't really that spicy. It was good, but it felt like something was missing. Once everyone was there, we all headed up to the self-serve stations and got in lines to put our noodles, meats, seafood, veggies, toppings, and sauces in one big bowl. Make sure you get everything you need before you go up to get your order weighed, paid, and your bowl handed to the chef's. It didn't take much to fill up that bowl, so I ended up paying more than I planned for. We were each given receipts/numbers and our orders were brought to our table once they were ready. Our server came around to ask if we wanted sesame seeds on our noodles, much like when other restaurants ask you if you want Parmesan on your pasta. It was really good and filling, but I found it to be pretty expensive if you have a big appetite. I wanted something sweet to end with but I couldn't have eaten a whole dessert to myself, so I split the caramel brownie cheesecake with a friend. It was chocolate and vanilla flavored with a walnut brownie base, topped with a mix of dark chocolate ganache and brownie chunks, and whipped cream on the side. It was very good but very sweet, and I actually craved a big glass of milk to eat it with. Overall, it was all quite good, but nothing to rave about. The drinks and dessert were definitely affordable at $7 and $6, respectively. It's a nice change from having to order your meal off of a menu, but if you're really hungry, be prepared to pay for it! read more

A friend of ours wanted to drop in to the Mongolian because they had not had any since living in southern Ontario. We dropped in for lunch and the place was pretty easy to find. We were quickly seated and the staff took our drink order. If you've never been to Mongolian before it's got an area were you can choose uncooked vegetables, meats, sauces and put it all in a bowl and you bring it up to the cooks to cook for you. You can also add noodles and I think i saw soft tortillas and rice. There are a lot of different vegetables and sauces to choose from and the usual pork, beef and chicken. Here is were the Mongolian differs from the ones we're used to going to in Toronto and Waterloo. Once you choose all your items they weigh the food for you and charge you per lb or whatever they go by. If you've been to the ones in Toronto and Waterloo they've always been buffets. Depending on how much food is in your bowl the cost can add up quickly. The food was ok but nothing special. I remember liking Mongolian a lot more in the past. I'll have to give it a shot in Toronto again and report back. read more

MONGOLIAN VILLAGE We met another couple here for dinner on Monday evening (Mar 2/20). The four of us always loved Mongolian Village, that was until last night. We had what was without a doubt, the absolute worst waiter any of us had ever encountered. It's started with the drink order. I asked for a Bacardi and coke, and his response was we only have Capt Morgan, but it's the same thing. No. It. is. not! We settled on the drinks and went for our food. Upon returning to the table he approached with the drinks and lean across me, his side brushing my face in order to serve my date her drink. Very bad form! As we finished eating, I asked for the rest of my dinner "to go" He then brought a styrofoam container and dropped it in front of me and walked away. A little taken aback, I asked him how I was supposed to fill it with just a fork. Having been there many time, I knew they take your plate away and package it go. Instead, his response was to pick up my plate and scrape the food from my plate into the container with some of my food spilling onto the table. He wiped that with his hand back into the empty plate and set it back in front of me. The four us just looked at one another, incredulous. He topped it off by lean across the gentleman with us in order to retrieve his date's plate. That's was it, we'd had enough. We asked for the machine to pay, which he brought, and then stood over us while we used the machine. No one in our group left a tip, and none of us will be returning to the Robertson Rd location again. From now on we'll drive across the city to the Mongolian Village at Gloucester Centre where we know we'll get good service. read more

When it comes to Chinese food, Ottawa sets the bar very low. With that disclaimer in mind, this is probably one of the better Asian restaurants in the Ottawa Valley. The restaurant is very clean and stylish, and the wait staff is friendly and helpful. But it's EXPENSIVE. damn! After you've been seated at a table, you go up to the self-serve buffet-style stations and fill up a bowl with whatever you like. At the end of the food stations, they weigh your food and give it over to the chef. You then go back to your table and wait for the chef to deliver your food. They charged something like $2.69 per 100g ... you don't really realize it, but when you fill up the bowl, it can easily end up over $25! Add in tax, tip, and something to drink, and that's one hella expensive lunch. damn. read more

I've been to this location a couple of times now, once a number of years ago and again recently. I have mixed emotions about this place because of how it operates. I like to go out for food that I will NEVER cook at home and there really is nothing that special about this restaurant other then the giant grill. Which I have to say is pretty cool! Except does it really have anything to do with Mongolia? The concept here is you pic your food from a buffet style layout. Vegetables, different meats and noodles, mushrooms ect and place it in a bowl. They weigh the food to charge you. This gets pricey fast. You also make your own sauce, which can be fun, unless like myself you have no idea what your doing. I have quickly turned a pricey meal into something I don't want to eat. I let my wife make my sauces now. The fun part is control and customization over the ingredients. You give your food to the guy working the grill and he then cooks it for you and they bring it to your table. The problem is everything gets cooked for the same amount of time, so you may have under cooked and overcooked food on the same plate. Depends on what you chose and how picky you are. Food comes with a big bucket of rice and some soup. The soup was actually really awful the last time I went, very sour. I was also not impressed by the service recently either. The cook was good, but the servers just didn't want to be there and they don't have to do much, you do half the work in this place. Maybe they were just too bored! The decor is clean and modern. I don't think anything in the place is Mongolian. It was more like "modern experimental kinda asian I don't really know what I really am" style. Anyway still pleasant enough and clean. Bamboo screens broke up the space nicely to make some more intimate spaces. In conclusion my opinion is it's not really worth the money for a very unknown product. I think with this place you are paying more for the unique experience then the dinning, which can be fun for people. So you decide, I hope this helped. read more

Everything was delicious, I would go back in a heart beat. The side food they give you (rice and a soup) is great in portion sizes, and also great in taste. Food on the floors, dust everywhere, dead bugs on the booth separator.....not cool. I'd like to add this visit was at 3pm, it was empty....yet no one was cleaning the obvious food on the floor.... Our waitress told my celiac sister the soup was gluten free.....FYI it's not. For anyone with celiac disease, beware, you know the sickness that succumbs when you have gluten.... Great veggie, meat & sauce choices, the chef was great & courteous. Price, wow! I had an unpleasant experience. I went with a couple of friends on an evening that was not busy. The server forgot to bring me the soup she said came with the meal and then completely disapeared until we wanted to leave. I had a good amount left on my plate and wanted to take it with me. But instead of asking me if I wanted it to go, she put a dirty napkin and chopsticks from my friends meal on my plate and picked it up. I told her that I wasn't finished with my food which now had garbage on it and that I also never got my soup so I should not be charged full price. The "discount" I got was $1.42. I really like Mongolian village, but there's an a bit of a learning curve to preparing your meal without paying a fortune. If you load up on noodles, you will pay like $25+. Don't get noodles. The meal includes rice anyway. Skip past the veg and noodles and go right to the meat. Then go back to the vegetables, but avoid the heavier ones. I got a big bowl of shrimp, scallops, beef, scallions, sliced carrots, and Asian greens for $13. It was really delicious and fun to put together. read more

Don't forget, that includes rice, soup and rice-paper wraps. They will even bring hot sauce if you ask. Slight discount for vegetarians (veg bowls are typically only $15 or less). Can it compete on price with a buffet in Vegas? No. Is it value for Ottawa? Yes. Yes it is. 2. At the end of the week/weekend evenings, it is packed. With a lineup. You might want to reserve. One good sign of a decent restaurant. 3. The taste is what YOU make. They do have suggestions if you're not a good cook. 4. They have about 20 vegetable options, limited seafood, and probably at least 6 meat dishes to pick. Plus 30-40 sauces and other toppings. Seriously, you won't be want for choice. 5. Service has always been perfect. Food presented well. Desert looks great, from what friends have ordered (I don't eat sweets, so can't fully comment). 5. My family has gone to this restaurant many times in the past years and we have always thought it was great. What a surprise last night when we went for my sons birthday( it is his favorite restaurant) how much the place had changed!!! I made a reservation in the afternoon for 5 people at 6:30 only to arrive and there was no reservation and they couldn't find us a table in an empty restaurant, I was just shaking my head in disbelieve. Once we got seated, at a sticky table, we were asked if we wanted a drink while we waited for the rest of our family to arrive, we were given no menu's or alcohol list, nothing , and ignored for I don't know how long. Once everyone was there it was a good 15 mins before anyone asked if we were ready to order, half the crowd still had no drinks. We all had the Hot and Sour soup, which is usually great but not this time, it was not hot in any way, temp or spice . Now we went to the buffet part of the meal and that was the same except they obviously increased the price by at least 30%. We enjoyed the meal but no one ever came near us again, to ask if we needed anything or to get drinks, we didn't even get water. When we were done we waited for about a half an hour to see our waitress to get the bill, but she had disappeared and not told anyone about our table I assume because a different waitress showed up to ask whether we had paid the bill and she had to come back 3 times to ask different things about the bill. I usually give a good tip and I can't make myself not leave a tip but this is the first time I gave only a 5% tip, but I will not be returning, there are too many other good restaurants to spend over $250 for dinner. read more

The last time I was there, I went to the line to get a couple of tablespoons of sauce for the rice because it was dry. I was told that I would have to pay for it. I was shocked. I had put a fair bit of sauce in my bowl pre-cooking but obviously it had not survived the cooking process. I just wanted a little bit to moisten the rice. I didn't take the sauce and I never returned to the place. Talk about cheapskates. I suspect that any excess sauce is pushed down the little grill drain before it's put on the plate. And, the prices are not low - a simple meal can easily set you back over $20...and I couldn't even get a tiny bit of sauce for my rice. read more
