SERVICE @ Lone Star in Kanata was horrible. We couldn't believe the audacity of our waitress Nevada. She said we were lucky the restaurant doesn't add automatic gratuity to the bills, because she should have received AT LEAST a 20% tip. We were appalled that she said this to my husband, in front of our group of friends. We asked to speak with the Manager. She said she was the Manager, and walked away. Jaw dropping experience. We felt like requesting the tip back, that we had given her; for her sub-par service. Hence why she was not tipped 20% originally. As customers, WE get to decide the gratuity we would like to leave the wait staff, according to their level of service. She didn't deserve a tip because she took our order and brought us our bill. The lady that hosted the front door, did everything else (except for the gentleman that brought out our food) Our waitress didn't check on us after we had our food served or refill our drinks. No salt and pepper for us. We had the completely opposite experience the last time we were there. We will not be supporting this restaurant anymore. read more

A great Friday dinner place with friends. Usually hopping so we get there around 5pm. Ambiance is pleasant. Patrons are happy. Servants are friendly and courteous Food is good especially the fajitas which are terrific. My backup meal is the Grilled Chicken sandwich just nicely spicy. All burgers are good. Pre-ordered more than 40 minutes in advance. Chips, salsa, and and order of queso. I go to the takeout counter, no one is there. I wait, servers in the restaurant can see me, they do nothing to get someone to help me at the take-out counter. Five minutes pass, I decide to CALL the take-out counter, finally two people come out and take my order, which I had already ordered online and pre-paid for. 20 minutes of waiting for a pre-paid order. Unfortunately, I have nothing real positive to say, it's my first time at this location and will be my last. I have been to many other locations, and the quality and food standards are the same. This location was very different. The food was cold, I sent back items multiple times, yes it was busy, but food standards should not suffer, other locations are just as busy sometimes even more and the food is always warm. Even portions were lacking sauces etc...if you are low on sauce or anything, the kitchen should make the serving staff aware. They should start making more of things. Anywho the beer was good, the queso fries were awful, no cheese sauce, it looked like puke on a plate, the Jalapeños app, no cheese sauce, the queso was cold in the jalapeños, it came back a 2nd time all they did was put a tablespoon more of queso and it was still cold. I really have to update my review!! Probably at least 3.5 stars for dinner service, consistency and taste. I've been back many many times since I wrote those lunch reviews - always for dinner. Dinner food and service has pretty much always been good at dinner time. I have to admit that I love their steaks and I like their chicken - in fajitas. _________ Previous review: They've done it to me again! Fooled by what I saw last week at lunch, I thought I was ordering the same thing - I love salad served in a taco bowl - but apparently, the two people who shared an order of this last week ordered a large portion, or off the dinner menu, and Lone Star's usual lunch-size portion is much smaller - and served not in a taco bowl but with a piece of taco bowl in it! I really wish the menu - or the waiter - was clearer. However, having said that, I can say that the lunch portion was substantial enough, was tasty enough and filled me sufficiently. No point in your eyes being bigger than your stomach! Although it was tasty, it was also fairly spicy and kept repeating on me into the evening which was not impressive. Looks like I like spicy food better than it likes me. So far, the best and most consistent thing on their menu is the fajitas. Usually when I've ordered that, I've not been disappointed. Just don't order this item when they have a sale on it, as it's not quite up to par when they're in such a hurry to produce it. read more

Good choice! Lunch reviews for 2 separate visits (in the same week). Appetizer: Chips & Salsa (free). The salsa is not spicy--it's more similar to chunky tomato sauce. The chips are hot and fresh, so no complaints. Entree-visit 1: Lone Star Steak Salad (CN$ 18.99). A generous salad with mixed greens, tomatoes, green peppers, sautéed red peppers and onions, glazed pecans, jack cheese with a honey spiced citrus vinaigrette. They skimped on the steak, but them all the ingredients combine for a good lunch. Entree-visit 2: Chicken Quinoa Bowl (CN$ 14.49). Grilled chicken, red quinoa, citrus wedges, greens, bean & halloumi bites, avocado, pico, chipotle lime vinaigrette, pepita seeds & poblano crema. A hearty salad, but again, they skimped on the chicken. Still, the variety of foods work well together. Recommended! Drink: Iced Tea (CN$3.19). A somewhat sweet, but WONDERFUL Iced Tea! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Service: I sat at the Bar, and the service was prompt, friendly, attentive, and professional. Great service! Ambiance: Another Texas-style sports bar (several of these Texas-themed places in Ottawa), and it has plenty of seating for singles, couples, or big parties. Overall: The Lone Star in Kenata is across the street from a very busy strip mall with several restaurants. Those restaurants--and the parking--get VERY crowded at lunch. When I come to this restaurant I expect to rip into an amazing steak that leaves me wishing my stomach was bigger...not a "decent" steak. Please do not use their online reservation tool! Booked our Christmas lunch through the website and it said I would be sent an email confirmation. I waited a few days and decided to email them when I hadn't received anything. Zero response to my email. So I called and was told they didn't receive my reservation or my email and that time was no longer available. Extremely frustrating. Why bother having the online reservation tool if it doesn't work! After just moving to the area my husband and I were very excited for our first Lone Star experience. Unfortunately our excitement turned to disgust in one visit. There were no tables available for us so we sat at the bar which was alright although I think their air conditioning was broken as the heat was stifling... But We still managed to make our decisions on the menu. I ordered a chicken salad and he the brisket burger. We also started with the deep fried avocado which was a disappointment as all I could taste was the oil. Moving on.. My salad was mediocre.. I questioned whether my chicken was Actually cooked but I was too hungry and not in a mood to complain. For my husband he seemed happy with his brisket burger until he was awoken in the middle of the night to be violently ill! I'm very disappointed in our experience at the Lone Star Texas Grill after hearing such positive reviews but we certainly will not be retuning customers. read more

Had dinner here last night and was very pleased with the food and service. Our waitress was awesome and took the time to discuss/answer questions we had about the menu. I ordered fajitas for 1 with chicken. I special ordered mine with no seasonings on it - so it took a little bit longer to make, but it was worth the wait. I LOVE their fajitas! All the fixings are great - and you can order extra of anything for no charge ( I don't think most people know this!). The freshly made, hot tortillas are the best. We also ordered the texas sized wings - which are awesome. Definitely some of the best wings we've ever had! We normally go on Monday nights because they have a special on the fajitas for 2. This isn't the first Lone Star I've been to and what I disliked about my previous visit to another location I disliked here. Sometimes it's good to give chains a go however and my experience at this site was better in other ways than my other one. I'll start off with the negatives. The restaurant is really loud and unless you are a fan of country music or you like the atmosphere of exaggerated Tex Mex then you might want to go elsewhere. This restaurant wasn't as bad as the other one I've been to in that at this one I wasn't greeted with a "howdy partners", something which made me cringe last time. I get that it's a themed restaurant so maybe I'm being unfair. The positives were our waitress who was friendly and accommodating, and the food which tasted pretty good. We also had complimentary chips and salsa which was refilled with no charge. A very nice touch. I might go back here if I'm stuck for something to eat but Lone Star isn't really my kind of place. read more

I literally just had a 4 hour dinner with a friend at Lonestar in Kanata, and it was honestly one of the best mid-range restaurant experiences I've had in my life. And that is partly because the Cabo Taco was spectacular, but primarily because of the service. If you're looking for great service - interactive, engaging, hilarious - you HAVE to ask to sit in Ace or Soca's section. These two together are better than a show, I swear! Haven't been in to this restaurant for over a year, and will not go back! WORST FAJITAS EVER! Chicken over cooked and dry, veggies over cooked and tasteless, shells so soggy they stuck together. Tex-Mex restaurants always put a little bit of fear in me and I can blame the over-franchised places where you'll typically find the word "Taco" in the name and then find yourself tethered to a men's room in the hours that follow. The Lone Star franchise I've been to in other cities and have not had this problem, thankfully. The argument that I've had against them is the atmosphere of them. The only thing distinguishing some of them from a sports bar is that the mounted deer head on the wall sports a sombrero and not a hockey helmet. Though located in a strip mall, this particular Lone Star has a bit more atmosphere to it, blamed partially to its small area and interior décor. Because it's smaller than most restaurants in the franchise, it takes a smaller amount of people to fill it, making it live and vibrant. Note that this is a gather-around-the-staff-and-sing-at-the-customer-if-it's-their-birthday kind of place, which is a good thing to do to someone in your party even if it's not their birthday, but you just don't tend to like them very much. Like the other Lone Stars, the appetizer nachos hit the table warm and will tempt your eyes and kill your stomach for the food to follow. Don't fall into the nacho trap and stop your table at two baskets only. You can't argue against freshness. All entrées come fresh, hot, and spicy, as you'd expect with the franchise. You get a decent meal and this one just feels homier than the others in the Lone Star crown. I havered between a '3' and a '4' rating, but I like the idea of pimping someone's non-birthday if I'm not particularly fond of them. Being a small restaurant there's nowhere really to hide. After traveling to the nation's capital for lunch, no not Washington D.C. folks, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, I would've preferred to NOT go for "Texas BBQ / Tex Mex" food but that's where the client wanted to go and that's where we went. I walked in expecting a 2 Yelp joint and to write a 2 Yelp review and that is what I'm doing, enjoy: Food: - The food sucks...it's not authentic Texas BBQ, it's not anything close to real Tex Mex food - It's a franchise that doesn't even do Tex Mex food to mediocrity...it's just "whatever". - I ordered the chicken fajitas which was served with moist grilled chicken however the onions were raw and the rice was hard? Not enough water when cooking the rice? Perhaps it was burnt? Gross. I called the restaurant about the mistake (fully expecting them to redirect me to Door Dash) but the person I spoke to was very apologetic and really nice about the mix up. I've been a fan of Lone Star since they opened their first restaurant back in the 90's, or maybe late 80's. I moved to Texas in the mid-90s and tried to hit Lone Star every time I visited Ottawa. Unfortunately, I've noticed a significant decline in the food over the past 5 years or so. Today's visit was disappointing enough that it was time to write a review. First off, what's with charging for chips and salsa? I live in TX. Any TexMex place that tried to do that would have their windows shot out, but we won't get into the gun control discussion now. You want to keep a true TexMex experience, then include them with the meal and put the salsa in its own bowl. (please see my update and Lone Star's reply below) Next, there is a difference between guacamole and avocado mush and what you served was the latter. I wouldn't be surprised if this came in frozen as it had the consistency of guac at places that I know get in bags that are frozen. At $1.50 for a little container it should be house-made with texture and flavour. Moving on to the refried beans - worst beans ever, and I've had them at a lot of different restaurants in TX. Do you mix them up from a powder?? Just plain nasty. The queso, anemic. Tasted like it came from a can. Shame on you for serving that. Not wanting to leave on a down note and the reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1, our server was great. Very attentive and friendly. I don't know if the Texans that started off the business are still involved but whoever is running the show should visit TX and reacquaint themselves with what TexMex is supposed to taste like. Updated May 11, 2018 My apologies for taking so long to update this review. I followed up with the Lone Star team at their suggestion and as a result, got in contact with location's manager. I do appreciate any establishment that takes the time they did to discuss my review. First off, I appreciate the explanation for charging the $1 for the chips and salsa along with the results of all of those meals being purchased. I wasn't aware of that, and had I been, I would not have mentioned it. I spoke with the manager about the guac and he offered up a potential explanation. Due to the volume of guac LS sells, it is made at a central location, bagged and distributed to the restaurants and its never frozen, as I alluded to. It's likely that only the corner of the bag was opened and the guac squeezed out resulting in the mushy consistency that I experienced. He indicated that he would discuss with staff to ensure they open the entire top and scoop it out as per protocol so that it maintains its proper consistency. I still think its a little expensive for such a small quantity but avocados aren't cheap in Ottawa. I would suggest that you offer a larger size that can be shared for dipping chips. Next we discussed the refried beans. He indicated that the recipe had undergone a change earlier in the year. I can't recall if he said that they are adding more or less tomatoes to the beans but made the adjustment based on feedback from customers. This actually caught me by surprise as I was pretty sure none of the TexMex restaurants I visit in Dallas add tomatoes. Took a little while to visit 6 or 7 local TexMex places and ask if they put tomatoes in their beans. To a tee, they were surprised by the question as none of them add tomatoes. That explains the differences in taste and consistency as compared to what is available locally. I will reassert my suggestion that those in charge of the recipes make a road trip to Dallas to see what refried beans are supposed to be like. I can appreciate the idea of tweaking a recipe to cater to local tastes, but I'm struggling with how anyone would prefer the beans I had at LS over what's available at any of the local places. Lastly the queso. He offered a suggestion on why the queso was as it was and indicated that he would discuss it with the staff as well. I'm hoping that was the problem. Over all a pleasant and productive discussion. I sure hope my issues were one offs and I will be headed back the next time I'm in Ottawa as the rest of the Ottawa family members like the place. read more

We are normally huge fans of Lonestar, but this visit fell short for us. We called ahead and were impressed with the Yelp app which gave us wait times and indicated when we would be seated. We arrived at the suggested time and were seated quickly. Our server introduced herself and took our drink order. We had some questions about the menu that she struggled to answer. The service we received was not stellar. She was not attentive and missed a few things. Our food was decent but we found the tortillas were much smaller than they normally are and were thicker and not easy to fold. The lettuce wraps were also small and a bit soft. Our server seemed annoyed when we asked for things that should have come with our meal. When paying by gift card she took the cards and applied them to the bill without even showing us the total bill first. We had to ask for the bill to ensure it was correct. A bit of a disappointing experience for us. Maybe we will stick with the Hunt Club location for future visits. read more

I wouldn't serve the food in that restaurant to my dog. 6 of my work crew and I went in for lunch. The fish tacos were a sloppy mess, the brisket was sliced lunch meat and the chicken wrap was tasteless. The wings were breaded deep fried with no notice on the menu, greasy and made us both feel sick. 3 guys had upset stomachs for the rest of the afternoon. The service was okay but I hate eating in a restaurant where I can see the staff eating while they're working and the bartender wasn't even trying to hide eating food right in the middle of the bar. We will never go back. If you like actually good cooked food, don't eat here, it's a greasy, unskilled sloppy menu. read more

Really don't like their new ordering options - limit sides to 3 options for a family, and they're not unlimited. We asked for guacamole, and almost needed a magnifying class to see it. and it was pretty bland. What a disappointment. We went early to avoid the dinner rush, but still waited 30 min for a table for 6. Our faults for not making a reservation, but come on, I saw no end of empty tables. Push a couple together or something. The very young girl charged with organizing the tables who told us it would be just a few minutes had no problem taking in no less than 16 parties of 4 while we waited. When we did sit down, the section was empty... So the table for six was free the whole time? Beyond frustrating! The food? Other than it taking so long, I would describe it as forgettable... barely "meh". My po' boy was bland and dry. The fries were mushy and old. The coleslaw was warm and the rice and beans are more plate decoration than for eating. No one at our table ate them. The carrot and celery garnish on my kids' plate was so dry and old, it was browning on the edges. I don't get what the attraction of this place is and why it's so busy. Its certainly not the quality of the food. Maybe it's the free chips and salsa, which were ok. The birthday singing I could do without... Maybe if the wait staff focused on waiting tables instead of singing, they would have taken our order faster (after the 30 min wait)... Or brought us enough waters for all of the people at the table... Or cleared our plates after we finished eating instead of 10 minutes later... Or brought more napkins... Recommendation?
