But Murphy is a bugger and you can bet your bottom dollar they're going to get sick on a Saturday afternoon when it's a visit to the after hours vet. Thankfully, Pet Emergency operates out of Queensland Vets at Stafford Heights and before midnight charge a lower fee for after hour consults. The pooch and I were seen to relatively promptly for what was a busy weekend of consults and injured animal drop offs for the clinic. The vet that saw to us was warm and friendly. There was no hard sell for product -- just honest advice and diagnosis. These guys are firmly in the pet black book. You hope you never need to call upon them but you're thankful they're there if needed.

Very pricey place for a bunch of vets who stand around doing testing all day. The point of taking…read moretests is to find the problem and rule out what could be. Unfortunately the vets here are not about the doing all they can for your pet but rather what they can do as a business. They will go the latter because it's, and I quote, "worthless" as our dog's doctor, Phillip Thomas, so nonchalantly expressed in a conclusion meeting about our beloved dog, Bentley, who passed away. We still do not know what the cause of her death was and we have no answers. However, we did manage to be invoiced a nice hefty bill. Their staff are not properly trained and don't have very good phone manner especially when communication is their way of conveying the updates of your pets conditions. Not to mention the staff there know absolutely nothing and never have an answer and aren't to enthusiastic in finding out. A loss is a loss, pets are no less worthy than a human life and animals become a part of peoples lives and journeys. This clinic is insufficient in their work, their research and their communication. If you do take your pet here - don't believe everything they tell you and get a second opinion.

When she arrived she helped me with advice on what hair cut to do for a wee black puppy in summer and how to keep up with his regular brushing and nail clipping at home. She even let me hang out so I could get some tips on how to hold him when I brushed him. He's looking cute as all get out now and seemed to enjoy his little pamper sesh. We are pedigree kitten and puppy breeders and have been using this particular vet for many years and have always found that Paul explains what is wrong with your animal in a down to earth way and offers several options for care. He doesn't believe in expensive unnecessary tests but of course will offer them if he believes they're needed. His vet nurse Monica is always helpful on the phone or in person. Initially Paul can seem a bit eccentric, but after getting to know him and visa versa he a warm and generous person. Being a breeder of pedigree kittens and puppies we need to have a great vet and Paul definitely fits the bill. THE BELOW IS NOT SO MUCH REVIEW BUT SOME INFO ON HIS CARING NATURE. We had used Paul for a few years but lost track of him when he closed and moved his practice from a nearby suburb. Luckily we came across him again a couple of years later when frantically trying to find a vet open on a Sunday, we had an extremely sickly 2 week old puppy. Even though he wasn't actually open he was there checking on the animals and amazingly answered the phone. Paul got us to come to the surgery straight away so he could attend to the sick puppy and he literally saved the puppies life, and he wasn't even supposed to be working.

Here, however, I felt that the vet in charge, a nice man named Paul, really does care for each animal. He didn't try to get us to buy anything expensive but rather told us what was available and the cheaper brands he thought worked well. My cousin who also has a dog lives in Indooroopilly has made this her go to vet because she loves the attention. The office is not at all flashy and the consultation room is simplistic so you might not think much of it but the service is impeccable. When compared to other vets out there this one is quite affordable. The flea shot for our dog cost around $30 less than another vet we had originally gone to. What's also great about this place is that you can call Paul and he'll answer your questions (with patience) and give advice. He also follows up to make sure everything is fine, which is great for any doubts or uncertainties you may have. I think this is a great place that really looks out for your pets.

They sell dog beer at Ashgrove Pet Cafe. It's sitting on the front counter, looks like an elegant…read morebottle of human beer in design but has dogs on the label. (Sorry, it's non-alcoholic.) Then, behind the counter, there's a row of flea tablets lined up like cigarette packets. Glancing at the beer and tablet line-up, I felt like I was in the equivalent of a dream toy shop for dogs where they also sell beer and smokes. This large store sells an insane amount of toys for your pet. There's stuff for cats, birds, fish and other pets, but as I have a dog it was mostly dog-specific products I focused on. The dog selection seemed to take up a large proportion of the store, and there's even a dog (a surprisingly docile Chihuahua) that sleeps on the front counter. (He's six, called Louis, and likes pats but not being held.) Besides a huge selection of toys - so much you can't take it all in in one visit - there's other stuff to pimp out your pet, including a doggy clothing rack if your pet is that way inclined. The Pet Cafe also boasts a wide range of health foods for dogs, particularly those suffering from health issues (e.g. calcium deficiency, obesity - general medical issues that also seem common to humans). The store stocks both Science Diet and Advance food and health products. In terms of The Unhealthy, the front counter showcases an assortment of doggy cookies and chocolates (actually made of carob) that are home-made looking. They weren't as expensive as I thought they'd be, but I'd bought enough stuff here already. The counter staff were also incredibly friendly and chatty, which you'd gather from a business where there is a resident pet.

Katie in particular was just so kind and caring and full of great ways to help Snoopy settle in with us and gave us some samples of food to try him on as he's had been very fussy and nervous about eating. It's helped us a lot as buying a big bag of biscuits and him not eating any of them was a real worry. Look forward to coming back in a few weeks to show him off after we've washed him in his new shampoo and conditioner and we've figured out what he really does like to eat.

My dog is too busy keeping up with his napping schedule to tell me how his morning at Paddington…read morePups went, but as his dutiful owner and payer of all his bills, I suppose I can justify telling you how pleased I was with the result. Finding Paddington Pups was the result of a google search and a telephone call where a pleasant young man on the other end told me, "If you can bring him in this morning we can see him." I'd been searching for a new groomer for our pampered pooch after a less than desirable cut just before Winter. All I wanted this visit was a general tidy up, wash and dry (his visits to the salon sound all too much like mine!). Paddington Pups were able to see Dutch that day and it worked out cheaper than our usual salon. Cheaper doesn't always equal better but upon being reunited with my pup a few hours later it sure was in this case. The groomer had heard everything I said and trimmed his face without making him look like a dog without any facial hair. His feet were tidied and there was no great length taken off the rest of his coat. And while I'm yet to make use of it, they also have doggy-day care on site as well as a small range of pet food and toys.

The staff are always really nice and they sell BARF (food) which is handy and it's cheaper here then the other two options I have near my home. They don't…read moresell puppies or kittens which I think is the most important way of judging a pet store because pet stores that sell puppies and kittens not only support puppy farms and dodgy breeders, but also encourage the impulse purchase of an animal that requires a great deal of commitment. The staff at Petbarn are knowledgeable and helpful, and are all animal lovers with lots of experience in pet care. The range of fish and aquarium products here is excellent and they have staff dedicated specifically to helping you establish and maintain your own aquarium. Another thing I like about Petbarn is that pets on leads are welcome, so if you need to get your dog a new collar for example, you can actually bring them in to see what fits (and you can count on them getting cuddles and treats from the staff as well!). Petbarn has a wide variety of pet products including foods, grooming products, accessories, toys, and treats. They also sell some medications such as worming and flea treatments. The staff here are happy to consult with you about whatever pet advice you need. Many times I've come into Petbarn to seek advice about my fish tank and have had a long, helpful conversation with a staff member and then gone home without needing to buy anything because the staff don't push you to buy things in return for their help. For this reason, whenever I need to buy anything for my dogs or aquarium, I head to Petbarn. They also have a customer loyalty card and lots of information about obedience, puppy pre-school, and other pet activities.

All the staff at Clayfield Vet are friendly, helpful and explain things in a clear manner. They all have a wonderful bedside manner and can even manage to control my 'big boy' who does not liked being held or patted. They give you options based on a case by case basis. They will often consult each other and/or other medical professionals on cases which I think is wonderful because you can get more information and better service this way. This is a family run business and they treat every one of their patients and their humans with dignity and respect. They will often do follow up calls in a few days to see how your pet is progressing after they leave the surgery. Boss, the resident cat is really cute (and cheeky) too and loves to be petted and have a game with you. If you do not want Boss near you or your pet, you just have to let the nurses know and they will move him to another room instantly. I cannot praise Clayfield Vet highly enough.

Don't worry about bringing your pets into Boss's territory, he's quite friendly. If anything, he just hasn't figured out yet that not everyone wants to be friends with him. The vets will intervene if he ruffles anyone's feathers. There are four vets there who you can see, all of them have at least 10 years experience. You're onto the goods with these guys. I've only ever had an appointment with Dr Gray, and I'm happy to report that she gives down to earth, common sense advice. She's not going to suggest you spend more money than you have to on superfluous items for your pet if you don't need them. Her bed side manner with pets is second to none. She's relaxed, and she knows how to get things done. She won't waste your time. Also, she explains things in a way that makes everything seem as easy as A B C. For any international travellers, Clayfield Vet Clinic can help you out with all the checks you need to go through before your pet can be exported to another land. That's a service not provided by the majority of vet clinics as it requires special accreditation. Bonus! Clayfield Vet Clinic is quite popular, and so I'd advise making an appointment. You can usually get in the same day or the next day. Another good thing- it's an independent family owned practice- now if that doesn't get your vote, what does? Most importantly, It's obvious that all of the vets there are doing what they love. It's not the daily grind for these folk, that's fo' sho'.

For all you crazy ass animal yelpers you know that you'll like this place…read more You like looking through the glass aquariums at the fish, the hermit crabs, sometimes even the snakes. You like trying to stick your hand in to pat the puppies or kittens or anything furry really. The little child in you is dancing inside the second you walk inside this pretty big store and you know you'll be able to touch something! See something and maybe even buy something if you can afford it. I have my doubts about the puppies here, rumours on the grapevine tell me they sell a vast range of pups because they do get some from puppy farms... but it could be a rumour. With no truth in it. Having said that, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful so if you did get anything here or need any medicated shampoo like me, they are more than willing to point you to the right direction and even show you how the item works. It's a great place for kids to have fun too, and the dog food isn't too expensive.

I'm embarrassed to admit it but I use to come to Pet City a lot to look at - their fish collection…read more You wouldn't believe the size of their collection. There are African cichlids, American cichlids, garoumis, neons, guppies, clown fishes like Nemo, bright coloured salt water fish that you find in the Barrier Reef - draw breath - even their goldfishes were crazy exotic varieties with celestial eyes, lionheads and bubbly chins. This is the place to go if you're an avid fish collector. Their range is huge given that they are not an exclusive aquarium. Their staff know their stuff too should your $200 discus threaten to float belly up. In my case, usually it was because I wasn't washing the tank out enough but there are all sorts of fish fungal afflictions and water pH issues which the devoted fish collector need to know about. They have a pretty impressive aviary and reptile house as well. My nephew picked up his first pet here; an unusual pair of hermit crabs named Michael and Priscilla. He's from a science-y family so I have no doubt he'll be picking up some stick insects, centipedes and rhinoceros beetles for his collection soon enough. Pet City is not your standard pet store. Even if you're not after a pet or pet supplies, it's an entertaining place to take the kids.
