I have had two large pieces done at monkey fist now. Both by Tony Lucero. The first in 2019 which I'm still pleased with today. The most recent being just finished May 2023. The first piece I felt was very reasonably priced and the liberties he took were acceptable on the design changes. The price I was quoted for this most recent piece was much higher, but I was pleased that he worked with my budget a little for being a returning client. The liberties that he took on design, however, totally changed the vibe of the tattoo. At the appointment time, he showed me his rendition, but I told him it wasn't at all what I was going for. He changed the design over about 2 hours while I waited to be much closer to the original. It still had a lot of changes, but the theme remained similar to what I had in mind. Since the shop is about 3 hours from me, and deposit in limbo, I wanted to get it done. The finished product I am overall pleased with, but I did have to coach him pretty hard to get the eyes and lines to an acceptable level at the end of the session. At which he got aggravated. The lines on the background never really got to the extravagance of the original design I gave him, but that was to be expected with the price break. The worst part of going back and forth on the design was the vibe it left on the whole session. He was generally less pleasant after going back closer to the original art. I still preferred some aspects of the original artwork to what I got, but I'm generally pleased with the result and it's healing nicely., Unfortunately, that's probably the last piece I will have done there. The piece turned out nice, but the awkward vibe over 7 hours was less than appreciated. I recommend these guys if you don't mind giving the artist complete liberty, but on original designs that you're 100% attached to, you need to be affirmative to walk away with what you want if it doesn't completely align with the artist's style. read more

If you are getting a tat, pick your artist carefully and avoid this place! I went to an artist who was highly recommended by a number of people last year and after canceling an appointment because he hadn't had a chance to draw the tat we discussed, I showed up for the rescheduled appointment and he hadn't done anything again. He spent ten minutes drawing this and I said ok (bad decisions ). After doing this shitty tattoo he stopped answering my messages about finishing it (full sleeve) and was too busy to talk if I went to his shop. Basically left me high and dry. I've talked to a number of artist and nobody want to put there name of finishing or covering it so this is what I had to do. This is after 1 of 3 laser removal session. Shit hurts too! read more

Great experience at Monkey Fist, it's a clean & inviting shop and all of the staff were friendly and put me at ease. I'd been planning on getting ink for almost a year and came here based on a friend's recommendation. He told me to go see OG, the owner, and he'd give me exactly what I was looking for. I took about 15 different pictures with me to give OG an idea of what I was looking for then he asked me a bunch of questions so he could really get the full scope of what I wanted. Then he got to work drawing out out the design, asking more questions as he went and tweaking things here and there. The process took about 3 hours, the first hour we talked and he drew the artwork, the rest of the time I was on the table. He took a lot of care to make sure I was comfortable and checked on me throughout the process. It was a great experience and I fully intend on sending any of my friends to Monkey Fist to get their ink. I got a custom design that's exactly what I wanted without even realizing it before walking into the studio. The lines and color are impeccable, I feel like gushing because I'm so pleased with the work Before the ink was even dry (haha) I started discussing my next project with OG. What a day we had yesterday. My wife and I have been talking about stopping into Monkey Fist tattoo and ask about getting our wedding date tattooed on our fingers. What a wonderful surprise when we walked in. The shop is so clean and beautiful. The staff was so friendly and nice. We talked to Jupiter and he was so helpful with combining our idea and his wonderful artistic talent. We were able to get our tattoos done right then. We are so happy with the work. I guess my money isn't green enough. Circa 2015 I was interested in beginning a project to get some long-term sleeve work completed. I live nearby and thought a place I can walk to for appointments would be perfect. I went in personally and spoke with the Owner (Ortavio). He didn't have time to talk and passed me a business card. He said to send him an email with pictures and he'll get back to me. A few years went by with no response. I went elsewhere and had some great work completed. Fast forward to March 2019, I tried again. Oravio told me the same thing almost verbatim. Passed me a business card and he'll be in touch. One month later and no response. I went elsewhere. Not sure what the deal is, but, by looking at the pictures on their Website of Ortavio posing with professional athletes, I suspect Ortavio considers himself quite the celebrity and therefore very exclusive. read more

I am so glad that their are places like Yelp where you can leave honest review. Let me tell you my story. After visiting a few shops I decided I liked the personal vibe of Monkey Fist and the owner, OG, seems to do decent affordable work. So I went in and made an appointment which was two months in the future. in the mean time I happily get some free work from Og/s (have NO idea what his real name is) apprentice Rochelle who was pretty nice to chat with. She however had no idea who Bowser was or anything about Mario but I provided numerous sources and tried my best to explain that I was looking for the Paper Mario style. Four painful hours later I had a partial Bowser that isn't that bad, but certainly wasn't the style I had printed out and requested. For free I wasnt going to complain and figured I would just have her finish the piece in her style no problem. I tipped decently and spread the word about her work. Was looking forward to bringing my brother in for some work, too. Upon further inspection Rochelle is good at her own designs which are simple line drawings. If you like that then she is the way to go. Anything else out of her comfort zone, not so much. HERES WHERE IT GETS GOOD. The night before my long awaited appointment with OG, Rochelle calls to let me know my appointment needs to cancelled. Something about flights being cancelled. I was very bummed out but agreed to wait for OG to call me the next day to reschedule. Night goes on and I go to bed. My husband, not me, posts on his own personal facebook without tagging anyone that he is bummed for me that my appointment got cancelled. Less than an hour later Monkey Fist post to their shop page, tagging my husband, that we are idiots and that he is a dumb FAGGOT. he seriously used that word. it was a weird drunk sounding ramble that was very negative and completely unwarranted. FB drama ensues but by the time I wake up in the morning to read it, it has been deleted and I have the clear impression that I am not welcome there anymore. Anyone else thinking WTF cause that's what I was thinking. No follow up call, return of my voicemails, emails or text messages. Unprofessional barely describes the behavior of this shop. I am so glad they showed their true colors before I gave them my skin and money. read more

I went to Monkey Fist Tattoo on a Saturday at around 1 PM, hoping to simply schedule an appointment. I was a bit nervous walking in because, being young and female, I was not the usual client. The atmosphere was very friendly and open, with artists and clients all talking. Cody, one of the tattoo artists, was very nice but not fake with me and did my consultation right then and there. He scheduled me an appointment for later that evening. When I came back, he drew and redrew my tattoo until it was exactly what I wanted without complaint or any remarks. He also helped me mix the perfect ink color. The result was EXACTLY what I wanted, and they offered me a free touch-up. I got on here when I was looking for a tattoo shop in Denver. Some good and bad reviews, but anyone who knows good art can see that Evil Dave has some serious talent. Booked an appointment with him via email and he was always quick to respond. Dave reworked a tattoo and added some freehand around it. 100% satisfied and love this tattoo. Dave is hilarious and we listened to great music and talked about a little bit of everything. Great dude, awesome tattoo artist. Don't pay attention to comments about him overworking the skin, or getting an infection...blah blah blah...people just need to own up to being unable to take care of a tattoo and not place blame. read more

Tattoo artist Dave worked on my tattoo...horrible experience. Overworked my skin and ended up getting skin infection. Spotty job too where ink wasn't filled in all the way on my simple 2 color design. I've never gotten an infection b4 on my 5 other tattoos. Jupiter is RAD! He totally tattooed my sister and I on my last day in Denver and did a phenomenal job. Even though I was a bit inconsiderate and ran late, he took his time and was very friendly and welcoming; seriously one of the best artists I've had, and I've had many. Go see for yourself! Let me just start by saying I have never actually had any work done at monkey fist. I'm writing this review because last week I happened to be sitting at the bar of a restaurant down the street from the shop. The owner of the shop was sitting two chairs down from my friend and I. He introduced himself and begin sending us drinks. He was nice enough at first. He was interested in the tattoos that I had and was asking me a lot of questions about them. I told him that I'm actually having a couple of them removed and although I've never met him before and he had nothing to do with any of my ink he seem to get really upset at the fact that I was having tattoos removed. I didn't see any harm in having a conversation. I've never spoken to a tattoo artist about tattoo removal, I asked him if that was something that bothered him being a tattoo artist. Well I think he had one too many tequilas because suddenly he just snapped and started yelling at me that I'm an idiot. This was a huge overreaction considering I'd only met him a few moments earlier. I did not engage in any kind of fight or argument with him. I simply asked him why it bothered him so much if I keep or remove a tattoo. He continued to call me names. It was all so embarrassing (for him) and childish. I had such a terrible experience just sitting near him I could not imagine ever ever letting him put ink on my body!! And although tattoos are a very personal thing I have to say the work he had up and down his arms and hands was unimpressive at best. Terrible horrible vibes!!! read more

I have been getting tattooed at Monkey Fist for the past five years. Tops has hammered out at least 20 hours of amazing custom artwork into my flesh, a lot of it freehand. Tops is undoubtedly one of the most talented artists I have had the pleasure of finding. Not only has he mastered his craft and his hand is so incredibly light, but his talents continue onto canvas, paper, motorcycle tanks, t-shirts, and beyond. Issac and the rest of the crew are incredibly talented, kind, and accommodating. I've NEVER experienced anything but timeliness, respect, manners, and professionalism. And I've NEVER seen or smelled alcohol, marijuana, or even tobacco in the shop... EVER. That being said, any ignoranus that would rate them anything other than fantastic was obviously not raised proper, is maladjusted, or doesn't function well in our society... but I'm thinking a combination of all three is more accurate. If I could rate Monkey Fist with 10 stars I would. If you're thinking about getting your first or adding on to existing or covering up that mistake you made seven years ago, you should find yourself here... All my love Monkey Fist...
