Just enter and leave on Waialae Avenue... it's a one-way driveway, next to Asahi Grill. No one says anything. I just followed everyone else, poured my cans into a gray trash barrel, moved it forward as the line creeped closer to the weigher, entered my name and number on a form, and collected my money... Don't go too close to closing... After a long day of adulting and getting things done one item on my list was to drop off recyclables and thought that this Waialae location would be convenient looking at the hours on Yelp knew that I had time as it shows it closes at 5pm but as I arrived slightly before that and was delighted to see that no one else is there making the drop off easy and stress free. The driveway isn't that big and could probably fit a couple of cars but it was an easy process and got it done very easy but as I was unloading noticed that they started to close the entrance and was surprised since it was just 4:45pm, the staff is nice and got me on my way fast. I used to drop off my recyclables for years at my old office building because I gave them to the parking attendant. I started dropping them off at night when I was planning to be in the area. Recently, I found out that the attendant no longer worked there. So after dropping off bottles and cans for months, I decided to recycle them myself. I didn't know there were separation rules. Glass, aluminum, mixed metal, and plastic need to be separated and placed in different gray trash bins. The bins are weighed separately and the amount is calculated and paid to you in cash. They have a processing facility on-site which crushes and bales the plastic bottles. The place is super busy and people are coming and going constantly. You need to be aware of all the activity to avoid accidents. Check it out !! read more

This is the location I go to when the family is ready to drop off all the HI-5 items (aluminum cans, plastic bottles, glass). They are open on the weekends and it's on the way to the H1 freeway on-ramp to head into downtown Honolulu. This places doesn't smell good and there's usually wet spots or puddles on the ground so watch your step. There's ample space to pull in, 2 lanes but it's unmarked. I recommend unloading all the bags by the plastic bins and having another person start pouring the recyclables it into those bins. The driver can then pull forward, park and go back to help the person. Everything has to be put into the plastic bins by you then weighed by the staff before they give you your cash. I've been working in Kaimuki for several years now and responsible for the recycling in my office of about 35 people. The proceeds from recycling help fund prizes and decorations for our annual Halloween and Christmas parties for 2 programs in our division. There are several recycling centers in my area, but I now will go to Monster Hi-5 and Tires (MHT) on a regular basis. They are located near the corner of Waialae Ave and Kapahulu Ave, right next door to popular businesses of Asahi Grill and Salz Lock & Safe. I come to MHT whenever the office recycling bins pile up. I've pretty much got this process all mapped out. There are 2 designated bags - one for plastic and one for aluminum cans. There's also a box for staff to place glass and steel cans, which need to be kept separate from aluminum cans. Office staff have been instructed to empty and rinse out the receptacles and place them into the respective bags. For water and soda bottles, staff must also remove the caps prior to putting them into designated bags. In addition to properly sorting out the recyclables, timing is also key. At times MHT is busy and sometimes empty when I stop by. My time at MHT is usually minimal. I pull up and park. Then I get several empty grey bins to place my recyclables in. I patiently wait for my turn and will place the glass bottles and steel cans on the table as I usually just have a few of each. There are usually 2 staff who assist me: the cashier and his assistant. Once the bins have been weighed, the cashier will write down the weight on the sheet and his assistant will remove the bin and place the next bin on the scale. After the cashier completes the sheet for my recyclables, all I do is write my name, contact number and sign. I'm then given the cash and off I go. Because this recycling center is out in the open, it may get hot, so I tend to stop by mid-morning. And not everyone rinses the receptables so at times the premise gets smelly of stale beer and the floor sticky. Overall, a convenient and efficient recycle location that I patronize. Most of my visits have me dropping off my recyclables with minimal time where I'm usually out there in about 5 mins. read more

Nowadays I'm recycling my own Hi-5 because why do the City and County (Blue Bin) get the credit. I can make some money since I'm paying the Hi-5 plus 1cents at the supermarkets already. The closest Hi-5 recycling station I found that's convenient for me is located at the corner of Waialae and Kapiolani Blvd. right across from the Self Storage place. I filled 3 bags 1 bag of aluminum and the other 2 bags of plastic bottles. Hummmm I got $11.75 considering that I paid for all that extra fees at the supermarket register I guess that's not bad. Originally the City and county would have benefited. This Hi-5 monster recycling place is very convenient and fast . I got there and 2 other customers were empty there trash bags full of recycle. Hawaii is one of the worst states to recycle, it's a fact. The HI5 program makes it so companies discriminate based on what has a deposit, and what doesn't. Recycling should be done by all for the sole purpose of recycling, not getting the money back. It's always heartbreaking to dump wine bottles, tin cans, and plastic food containers that are just as good as those containing a deposit. Because of this, it's also not conducive for companies to participate in the program and many haven't lasted. Ones close to tourist areas are usually filled with people that collect recyclables out of trash cans (a noble pursuit), but I am generally wanting to dump my stuff, collect my deposit, and leave. After the very last trailer closed close to our home, I looked for a new place and found Monster HI-5 and Tires. It's at the start of Waialae Avenue heading into Kaimuki, just across the H-1 from Market City Shopping Center. It's a little tricky depending on traffic to turn into the parking lot, but usually it's easy. There's space for half a dozen or so vehicles to park and sort the items. It's also a tire/auto shop, but they seem to do more recycling business which includes bulk metal and other goods. They have plenty of cans for sorting, all cleaned and ready on arrival. They're open 7 days a week, 360 days a year; only closed for lunch from noon to 1pm. The employees are friendly and usually jovial with their work and moving cans. Note: as a 1-star review mentioned about feeling cheated by the weight, if you want, you can always request a manual counting of the items instead of weight; they're happy to do it and you'll be happy when you leave. read more

What can I say...........I've found my new "goto" spot to recycle my aluminum cans! It takes me awhile to save up a trash bag full of cans, but at least I am doing my small part in helping the environment, instead of dumping these items in landfills. The Monster Hi-5 and Tires recycling center on Waialae Ave., is located just across the street from the Goodyear Auto & Tire Center on old Waialae Road and Waialae Ave. I stopped going to the other recycling center in the Fresh Catch parking lot, as the last time I look my recyclables there, they ripped me off.......so that was the end of that about using that recycling center. I like this Monster Hi-5 and Tire recycling center as this location is open 7 days a week from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Monster Hi-5 and Tire recycling center has a pretty sizable driveway area so you can pull your car into the lot, then drop off your recyclables. Service is pretty efficient, as I didn't have to wait too long before someone took my recyclables & processed them for me........... I got back $9.25 the day I came here, and although it was a small amount, at least I am doing my part in helping the environment by recycling. read more

It's interesting that there are so many recycling centers in this area. There is one on Kapahulu and another on Waialae by fresh catch. I pass by all three daily, but have never been to Monster Hi-5 and Tires until today. I stopped in a little before 5 and they were already packing up shop. They were friendlier than the other two recycling places. The workers said thank you and bye lol. But I liked that they were so fast the most. I was in and out in less than 5 minutes. There was no line of people waiting to be checked out, I didn't even have to take my recyclables out of the trash bag I brought them in. They weighed the whole thing, I signed a paper and I was given my money. $5 for a trash bag full of cans! Not a bad deal (considering that you pay it when you buy the drinks in the first place). I will definitely be back. I like feeling like I can not be so wasteful and that I get a little money. read more

We are not just bandits, somehow we are eco-warriors in the making. As much as possible we aid the environment by not contributing too much of our trash, and it starts here in our tiki nest. What we do? RECYCLING. And at the same time we are earning by doing recycling. ~ Per day, our household consume 2-3 cans from sparkling water, ginger ale or diet juice cans. For me, that's too much of a trash in a day. Imagine how many pounds will it weigh in a week. Glad that my husband also think & do the same thing (recycling). Every 3months we gather our bags of cans, bottles & plastics to recycle it in here. Thanks to our Lanai who serves as the piling place for our recyclable bottles & cans. Monster Hi-5 is a good place for recycling too. Staffs are not that friendly though but who cares, they did a job well done fast and easy. Make sure when you get there before weighing separate cans from bottles. ~ Everytime we recycle in here we earn $20 and above! It feels great to do even a bit favor for the environment. Those cans they gather in here will immediately undergo to a compressor, of course to press and then form it into a big box and then tight with something. If it's ready, they ship it to South Korea. Why'd I know? I Ask their friendly guy assistant and even let me go in the warehouse & observe how that machine compress the cans. Pretty cool actually. And when I ask what is South Korea doing with those compress cans? That is still a mystery. Maybe if given a chance to visit S. I literally just 1 minute ago dropped off a huge container full of crushed aluminum cans and with my own eyes saw it weighed 25 pounds on the scale minus 8 pounds for the container and the employee quickly whisks it away and dumps in into another container and tells me I have 5.5 pounds of cans. Wouldn't reweigh it, and got pretty hostile when I questioned how he came to that amount. Save yourself the trouble and go literally anywhere else. read more

There aren't many reviews for recyclers... guess they aren't as glamorous at food and cocktails. But someone has to do the dirt work of taking your recycling, and honestly, these guys do a wonderful job. I feel like they are friendlier than other recycling centers I have gone to. They've even took the time to school me about separating my plastics (17oz and under) to get a higher conversion rate. There other centers that are closer to me, but I have never had any hassles here, and since I pre-sort my goods before I come - I'm always in and out pretty quick. After a big graduation party, I offered to help my family by taking the cans & bottles to be recycled. I read on yelp that the 2 RRR Recycle locations on Kapahulu & Waialae had abhorrent service & I didn't want to get abused. Being yelled at by anyone is completely unacceptable. Thanks yeeps for reviewing Monster Hi-5 so I could try them out. I pulled into Monster Hi-5 (look for the orange building on the mauka side of Waialae) & was luckily the only customer at the time. Copper came over to help me sort the aluminum cans & plastic bottles (uh next time we should have separate bags at a party so no sorting needed). She was friendly & efficient. This location is right by the intersection of Kapahulu and Waialae and Old Waialae Rd (diagonally across from the storage unit with the big clock on top and next to the public storage). The building is painted bright orange so you can't miss it. Today was my first time using this location since they haven't been open that long, I just kept going to ones I was familiar with for ease. Anyhow, no one was ahead of me, the girl with the braids helped me and was really friendly/great customer service and was quick, so I was in and out fast! Which is basically what you would want from a recycling center. So, I'm happy they're open now since they are right down the street from me and now I will only use them in the future. If you are driving here, the parking lot isn't huge so just pull in where you can. I was only recycling bottles and cans but it looks like they do scrap metal, car rims, car batteries, tires, copper, etc as well here. I have been coming here for a year with no problem, however today Wednesday 4/14 at 11:55 am whoever the person reciving the bins asked me to sign and write my last name which is the first time to need to write the last name then he mumbled something I could not hear then when he was handing the money he said "you are very beautiful" and tried to touch my hand as he is handing money. I went back to my car and I see he still staring at me then I looked again and he had a silly smile and waved bye. Just as the others warn they will skim off the top. I just tested this theory over the course of 2 weeks bringing in different small weights. Always over 3.50. And each time I was always shorted one dollar. I can only imagine how much they skim when people bring in hundreds of pounds of aluminium cans. Not sure what happened today. I'm willing to change this review as they've been great before. But today's service needed to be documented. For at least a year now, I've brought my cans and bottles here, presorted into separate garbage bags. I would hand it to the attendant, he'd weight it and the bags would get taken to the back. Today when I arrived with my bags, the attendant seemed hesitant to take my bags so I asked if he wanted me to put the cans in the plastic bins as I noticed someone who was sorting his stuff was doing that on the side. He just motioned to hand him the bags. He weighed them and tossed them towards the back. As the attendant is calculating the payment, a couple of guys from the back, angrily mutter something. One of them takes the bags to the back. Then a few moments later a huge plastic bin is flung in my direction along with my bags of cans and bottles. The attendant then brings the bin and bags closer to me and motions for me to put them in the bin. I apologize saying that he had accepted them in bags before. He doesn't say anything. I ask if I could clarify if this is what we're supposed to do now. He doesn't answer and just hands the clipboard to sign and hands me my money. I've previously had nice interactions with others here. But because of this incident, I think I'll be looking for another recycling location. read more

First time here. Since I'm in town, I figured I'll recycle my water bottles piling up in my trunk. Waze App GPS showed me how to get here. Small location on corner street of Waialae and Kapiolani. You can see the Orange building on left across where Kapahulu meets Waialae - Easier to make a U-turn if going up Waialae, then right into tiny lot. Got lucky parking, but it's so small. Worker was helpful and was done quickly. A few cars parked after me so it got crowded with 3 cars. lol read more

I've been bringing my recycling here for a while. It's convenient and relatively fast. The only hiccup that decreases their rating for me was how the girl that works there was incredibly unprofessional. I don't feel there is a need to scream at people despite how they may be acting. It was most unbecoming could definitely be handled better. Note: They also don't wear face coverings. read more

I just got back from there and it's still supposed to be open. Got there at 4:40, 20 minutes before closing time and driveway was already blocked off! Patrons beware upon collecting money for recycle cans, bottles, etc...this company will rip u off when u don't count your money in exchange for recycled goods!! They will make it seem like they are giving u the correct dollar amount due, but u must precisely count your money before leaving the recycle site, otherwise, u will be ripped off, if it is possible to be mislead into thinking u got paid the right amount of dollars returned to u...BEWARE FOLKS!!
