This family owned and operated cafe is a must-go-to spot when in Darby. We stopped for breakfast and had a wonderful experience. Samuel greeted us and took our drink order right after seating us. The menu was full of several items of interest, and had half orders as well as full orders. Since everything sounded good, we got a variety of foods and shared them. The chocolate chip pancakes and the blueberry pancakes were huge and also excellent. We got an egg omelet combo called the Logging Camp which had several meats and came with potatoes which were nicely crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. They were seasoned well and tasted good with or without ketchup. The item itself was huge and we had to take half of it home with us. We also got gravy, eggs, bacon and toast. We put the gravy over the toast (we chose a marbled rye) and it was awesome. The bacon was cooked perfectly and we had basted eggs which were cooked just right. We enjoyed our food and the relaxed atmosphere. The service was great as Samuel kept checking on us several times throughout the meal. After the meal, he suggested a piece of carrot cake. He said his brother had just finished making it. Since everything else had been so good we decided to try a piece. It was EPIC! We ate one piece there and got 2 more pieces to go! Delicious breakfasts. They cook their hash browns in clarified butter! Thick slice bacon. For lunch, I had a small hamburger served in an English muffin! Nice option. Everything was very good. We also enjoyed the brothers that work there. They are polite and efficient. read more

I've only been twice and frankly would not be too excited to go again. I ordered pancakes and hashbrowns and asked for an orange juice and waited nearly an hour for my food. To be fair, there were a few other tables and this is a teeny establishment, but I've worked at a restaurant that could handle tons people at once without taking an HOUR to give a little girl her pancakes. Also, it'd be important to add that my pancakes were super greasy and my hashbrowns even greasier still. I love this place and it's history, but I think they should work on their speed :-) UPDATE: I went again for accuracy purposes, and I wish i hadn't for their sake. I'm a vegetarian and I asked for their Hill Top without eggs and was brought a dish completely different than what I had ordered littered with meat. We stopped there and ate in June and in October of this year. Both times the food was amazingly good. Before leaving, I purchased a piece of carrot cake to go which is probably the best I have ever had. Its a family owned and operated business. The kitchen is spotless and the service is great. I have been going to this cafe for many years, and while the food is always very good the service has deteriorated and the wait time for your meal has become ridiculous. The young men that work there are hard workers, but need training in prioritizing what to do. When it is busy I occasionally see the mother working, but have yet to ever see the father. The joke with the locals had been that when you order your breakfast you might receive it by lunchtime. I use to laugh when I heard this, but no longer. The last straw for me was recently when I arrived for breakfast at 10:05 I was still waiting at 11:20!!!!!!! This is not just a one time occurrence, but has become the norm. Last week I waited 40 minutes. And that time did not include the wait time when you first arrive until you actually receive a menu..... I waited while he cleaned two tables before he acknowledged me. I rate the food a 5 and the service a 1. Sad to say, but I am done with the Montana Cafe. read more

Great service from this restaurant family - and the food coming out of the kitchen is super! Try the onion rings - they are crisp and delicious. Awesome breading that clings to the tender onion. Agree with all the reviews. Great food. Unbelievable prices. But, Montana Cafe needs to work on speed. We waited almost an hour for basic breakfast (eggs, pancakes, and bacon). If you're in hurry or need to be somewhere, don't stop here on a Saturday morning. If you want good food and have tons of time, go for it. read more

The owners are to cheap to hire real help so they force their children to do most the work and you can tell they are miserable because it will take about two hours to get your food being the only table in the place. We love this little place on the north end of Darby! It's run by a lovely family from Oregon..Dad in the kitchen, mom and the kids serving In the dining room. Great effort by everyone!! They brought their recipe for delicious clam chowder with them from Oregon, and it's only served on Fridays. Some of the best we've tasted!! Also, the buffalo burgers are great!! They are open Tuesday-Saturday for breakfast & lunch until 4::00 pm, & for dinner on Fridays. Closed Sunday and Monday. read more

The food at the Montana Cafe is excellent. I agree with the others reviewing that meals are well prepared, generous and delicious. The family that runs the cafe is a very polite and gracious family. My reason for a three rating is that the service is slow and forgetful. With a little restructuring of the manner in which they assign tasks, I think I could happily move this up to a five star rating. There were three people working the tables when we were there with our two small grandchildren. Two young men and a woman. The young man took our coffee and hot chocolate orders but it was at least ten minutes before he brought our drinks. We then ordered our meals. The meala took an extra long time to prepare which we can live with, but we were never offered more coffee until we finally asked. Once we asked, the young man came out with coffee after about ten minutes, but only enough for one and a half cups. He said another pot was making and he would be back when it was done. We ate our entire breakfast and never got a refill even though new customers were brought new cups of coffee. When we decided to leave, I had to go up to get our bill. The young man was working on a bill when I walked up and I assumed it was mine. He politely said he would be with me in a moment. Then his mother came up and asked if he had helped me. When I said he said he would in a moment, she went over to a stack of bills, found mine, and proceeded to add it up..no calculator. She was very polite. I paid my bill and left. Since man power did not seem to be the problem..two cooks and three others in the restaurant, and not a huge crowd of customers, I assume this place just needs a little better organization. One person should definitely be walking around with a coffee pot and refilling and making sure there is always fresh coffee. The others could take orders, deliver food, and clear tables. Since sometimes not one of the three was walking around checking, I could not imagine what else they were doing. I know there are dishes to gather and put in the washer and possibly the cooks occasionally needed some help, but. things were just not running efficiently. I LOVE THE FOOD! BEST BLUEBERRY PANCAKES EVER!! We are from FL and my parents happened upon this place a few years ago. They told me about the food and I figured they were exaggerating. They were not, this place makes THE BEST blueberry pancakes I have ever eaten. Not only are they the best pancakes, they are so good I would say they are one of the best foods I have ever eaten! The bacon is amazing too! My husband flew out this year on Saturday night and was SO bummed he had to wait two days to go there and joked about changing his flight next year to a different day so he didn't have to wait! He likes the pancakes and the Logging Camp omelette as it is stuffed with meat, they certainly don't skimp on the servings or meat! The prices are amazing too! It is worth the drive if you live out of town!! I joke the pancakes will be served in heaven! I have been to almost all 50 states and even lived in Europe, never thought I would find some of the best food in a tiny town in Montana! read more
