First thing that I should mention is that I am a registered judge with the KCBS (Kansas City BBQ Society)... so maybe I expect too much. I tried one of their "taster" plates that had ribs, chicken, and shrimp. The ribs were tough, flavor was mostly from the sauce, not much smoke flavor. Both the chicken and shrimp were slightly overcooked, leaving them dry and tough as well. The plate came with a choice of sides, which I had baked beans, yam fries and a corn meal "muffin". All sides were very good but the muffin was the star...excellent. The service was very good. Atmosphere is great as well. Prices are basically in line with other similar restaurants. read more

Arrived for dinner at 8:45. After driving 4 hours to your community! Was seated and order a beverage and was given a menu and ordered an appie! We waitEd 10 minutes before our waitress came back to check on! She brought us our appie. We wanted to order another beverage and food but she proceeded to tell us they were closing in 5 minutes and the bar and kitchen was closed!! We would have thought she might have told us that when we arrived! And not give us menus when we got there! After expressing our concerns she gave us A little attitude! While eating our appie I observed the bartender serve a beer to a patron at the bar! I approached the bartender and asked about her serving her patron and not us! She as well gave us attitude! Montana's has great decoration, it's a really lodge-like outback theme hence the restaurant name. The food tastes great, lots of assorted selection considering the theme. The few things I tried were great and prices were very fair. read more

Nice lodge style decor complete with canoe on the ceiling. Nice TVs in the bar area with lots of beer on tap. Seating is not the most comfortable but it is theme consistent. Not a huge menu selection. Ribs, steaks, some burgers and chicken. Most of the basics. Nachos. Meh. Chips are not crispy, a bit chewy. Also a lot of very small broken chips - the end of a bag. We ordered the extra ¼ lb of cheese - good thing - I guess it doesn't come with cheese by default. Also meat was a bit flavorless and soggy and not warm. The ground beef seemed to be boiled rather than fried. I'd skip the Nachos and stick to the ribs, which are probably better and about the same price. Service is small town friendly if slightly inattentive (refills). Like being served by family - can't really complain. As far as value - the cost side of the equation is heavier than the value side. You pay a lot for what you get. read more

The parade of comedy that was our dining experience: First, waiting at the bar for a table. We got our buzz that our table was ready, only to be told that another server had given it to another group. The restaurant was maybe 60% full, but they would not seat us. Finally we get a table. Things are looking up. Next, we wait over 10 minutes for our server to take our drink order. Again, the restaurant is not that full. Finally Water shows up, no other drinks. Five minutes later, finally drinks. Next we spend 5 minute attempting to place an order for food. Apparently asking for our potatoes skins as an appie puzzled our waitress. Thus begins the Two hour ordeal of dining. Chicken wings were raw, coffee comes without cream and sugar, and when asked takes a great deal of time to show up. Again, the restaurant is not that busy as it is getting late. Our waitress assures us that she will deal with the raw food, which apparently doesn't mean getting us new food, or even taking it off the bill. Finally, we want to get our bill and end this ordeal. Three tries to finally get the bill sorted, including the waitress arguing with one of our group about what they ordered. We leave the second smallest tip I've ever left in my dining career and get out. All I can say is please don't visit this restaurant. Go to original joes right beside it, or Boston pizza across the road. read more

Now, I must be honest....i'm biased. We used to compete in barbecue competitions and now own a small concession/take-out place in Taylor, BC that specializes in barbecue. So...I KNOW good barbecue. Unfortunately...Montana's is not it. The staff were excellent when we visited, being both very personable and attentive. We absolutely could not fault the customer service when we visited, shortly after Montana's first opened. We ordered the ribs, and asked our server how they were cooked. She seemed to be very knowledgeable on the menu, able to tell us that they were "slow-smoked for 2 hours". Now...in the barbecue world, we're considered "hot and fast" cookers...and our ribs take 4-5 hours! Sorry Montana's....but 2 hours is NOT "slow-smoked". It was no surprise when the ribs were quite tough when they arrived. The sauce was ok, but masked any meat or natural smoke flavor. It's a shame to put effort into smoking meat, only to lose that hard work by dousing it in sauce. :( The "Bacon Macaroni and Cheese" was revolting and inedible, in my opinion. It had no cheese flavor at all, and the bacon was non-existent. The bacon puffs/chitlins were excellent though, cooked well and served warm with a little seasoning. Very tasty and addictive. The cornbread was good as well. The coleslaw was typical coleslaw...acceptable, but without much flavor. It was ok though. If I wanted true barbecue...I wouldn't go to Montana's. If I wanted a steak...I still wouldn't go to Montana's. Mr.Mike's is definitely the go-to "steak place", and we weren't impressed by the barbecue Montana's turned out...which should have been at least decent, considering that's their "specialty". We haven't been back since...but i'm considering giving them another try. I've heard very mixed reviews lately though, which makes me not want to give them another go... I guess time will tell. I LOVED the atmosphere though. Very cozy feeling atmosphere with unique, interesting décor. Again, as I mentioned, though others have complained about them lately, the staff was exceptional when we visited. read more

We took our Son and granddaughters there for lunch yesterday (Nov 4, 2017) It was after lunch time so it wasnt that busy. We placed out orders Got our water right away Asked 4 times for crayons -- asked 3 times for coffee - eventually got a bull story about a large order for coffee ahead of us and they had no clean cups After waiting an hour for our meals we decided enough was enough and asked to speak to the manager and the bill for our drinks The manager never came to talk to us - our waitress brought the bill for the coffees (we eventually got them) and pop No apologies or anything from anyone -- i said to the waitress that waiting an hour for food was ridiculous and all she said was it sure was. We have been to this restaurant many times but this was the last time we will ever go there read more

Just had ribs and wings and they were great. Tried the habenero sauce on the wings and loved it. My only complaint is the three micro-napkins that were provided for cleaning my messy fingers. Ridiculous, are they so broke that they can't provide proper napkins? Nothing screams "CHEEEAP" like skimping on a 2 cent napkin to tell the paying customer what some cheap-ass manager thinks of them. read more

It has a very cozy log cabin decor. Everyone was very friendly: the hostess, waiter, and manager. He stopped by the table to ask how everything was. Service was quick. I had the the 6 pork ribs with apple butter sauce, rice, and corn. I asked for an extra piece of corn bread and was disappointed when I didn't get it :-( The ribs and rice were a bit dry, I went at 9pm and that could be why. Next time I'm in Ft. St. John I would definitely consider stopping in again. I would have given them a 3.5 if it was an option. read more

Service started out ok. But epic failure after. Restaurant was dead waitress couldn't remember anything. Forgot to hold our main course till our appies. had to eat our main course with all our appy plates still at table. Couldn't bring the kids drinks till mid meal. Had to move our own dishes to the next table to make room for current plates. Then got a snarky attitude from another waitress who had walked by a dozen times and noticed the pile of dishes. And not once offered to take care of some.. Our plates were still at the table when we had enough and left. Food was good. Drinks were good just very poor service. Bill was almost 200.00 and at payment was asked" ur not going to leave me a tip" I think not. I will never eat there again. read more

Meant to post this ages ago, but forgot until I wanted to look up a review for another place in town. In the fall of 2015, my wife and I went for lunch on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Got sat in the bar, which was fine, I was wearing an NFL jersey. Sat down and the guy standing at the end of the bar (a manager I assume) changed every TV in the place to golf. Way to pay attention to your guests, guy. Whatever, I guess he wanted to watch golf. Our server was new and she admitted it. However, she didn't have a clue about the menu. My wife ordered a shrimp skewer salad and she asked if she wanted chicken. Hunh? Whatever, we ordered after a few missteps and waited for our drinks. Food takes 45 minutes (it wasn't busy) and is all wrong. My steak sandwich is a piece of meat on a dry toasted bun. So dry and tasteless it wasn't edible. My wife's salad was all wrong. She said she would have it cooked again. I was in shock, who would want to wait another 45 minutes to get more crappy food. I said I would pay the bill and go. Approached the TV guy to express my disappointment and he basically ignores me while trying to look busy with a POS terminal. I ask our server to have him come to the table and tell him how horrible our experience was. This time he listens and comp's our meal (we only picked at it anyways) and offers us free dessert. Um, no thanks. Anyways, go home and write a letter to corporate that they need to address the issues at this outlet. They write back and say thanks for the feedback and that they'll have the GM of the FSJ Montana's contact us. Never happens. Literally the worst restaurant experience I have had for many, many years. Awful service. My server was Geminei. Once she arrived at my table, she asked if there were any adults joining us (we were aged from 16-18) and told us that if we were putting sauces in each others' drinks she wouldn't give us refills. Which is understandable if we had done something to make her believe we would do that but flat out rude because it was the first thing she said to us when she got to our table. The next thing she did was look at my shirt and say "oh honey, that shirt. It's retro and all but honey. That shirt" while looking at me with a judging stare. I would have liked my drink order to be taken before I was insulted by my server. Once we had our drink orders, we didn't see her until a while after someone else had come to take our order. When we were paying, she complimented my acrylic nails and proceeded to tell us a story of her botched nails while making fun of a Vietnamese nail tech. Yes, she did do a racist accent while imitating her. Overall a bad experience. She also overcharged my friend $4 for a Pepsi when she had a water. Luckily I said something but still, we were trying to have a nice night out for dinner and a movie but we're met with a negative experience. Not happy. read more
