The range attendant makes you share a mat if you show up with another person, which is ridiculous. I'm a 14 handicap and my boyfriend is so bad, he doesn't even have one. The range attendant gives him the mat every time and makes me wait, even when other mats are open! I've never seen anything like this. Highly recommend walking up solo or having a word with the head pro. And if you're a female, I'd avoid this place completely. read more

Tough to get a tee time June through August. That's the only negative. The course is deceivingly difficult. Usually a degree of wind. Sometimes significant. The par 5's are a nice challenge to get on in 2. The par 3's feature some DEEP bunkers that you'll want to avoid. It's worth the trip. read more

First time here on my birthday, live in Yaphank. Forgot my wallet and gave my fiancé the "resident" discount but couldn't give me the benefit of the doubt, charged me as a non resident. Beautiful day and loved the course, unfortunately the guy who was in charge of getting us a cart ruined the experience for us as we asked for a cart 3 different times. He even circled us asked what our tee time is almost hitting my fiancé. Our clubs were taken off the bag drop and shoved into a rangers cart with no intent on putting them on a cart for us and we had to look for them. Honestly thought they were stolen. Came back and the same guy continued to ignore us. Horrible feeling heading to hole #1. Most likely will not be back. read more

Spoke to office staff who just stated "I'm not going to bother the supervisor you just have to wait". Astounding customer support here. Playing golf on the tip of Long Island certainly has its pro's and con's. Getting to the course is no easy task from Queens, nor from Southampton where I lived for a bit of time. Driving on Montauk Hwy through the other Hamptonian towns, not to exclude Water Mill, can take some serious drive time when the summer season is in full swing. As one of the only public courses that far out on the east end, tee times on the weekends and weekdays can be difficult to come by. The reservation system is based on obtaining a card from the state park for a minimal fee. Then simply dial into their system, shared with Sunken Meadow State Park Golf Courses, pick the day, the time and number of players. As a single player, walking up at 8:00 am, I have been on more than one occasion waiting until my tee time of 3:00 pm, which is about the worst news a single can receive. No exaggeration there, it has happened on more than one occasion. Don't fight it. We all could use a three hour practice putting and chipping session,. But once you get on the course, it is easy to understand why the times fill up quickly. The more shots you can pull off, the better (much better) you will fare out on the links. The routing is not very intricate as you play nine out and nine back, but you can really sense wind direction much better with that design. But let me say that when the wind blows, you will be battling for bogeys like you have never have previously. Number nine plays into the wind most of the time, or a little over your right shoulder. Swing easy when its breezy and just safely work your way to the turn, its not a hole to mess with. The par 3, second hole plays about 100 yards, that's all. I have carded a 7, 8 and I think an 11. The par five's are reachable on the right days playing to low greens, elevated greens protected by lots of bunkers and did I mention that there is lots of wind? Par 3, number 16 hole is there signature hole. 190 yard shot over a waste area to a narrow green. (I stuffed one six inches behind the flag and was convinced I had an ace, what a hole to get one on, or not) The rough is different from every other Long Island course as it is thick and have the construction of vines. Almost like the grass in the south, but much harder to advance the ball through. You can not hit a flop shot, as the vine grass will twist the club in your hand, pitching it will not give you the height to hold the green. Its not an easy track but so very worth the trip and pray you do not get rain on the day you play. It makes an already difficult course much more difficult. About ten shots more difficult. read more

I absolutely love this golf course. The layout is so so good, and so is the price. Similar to Bethpage State Park, you register your license in the tee time system and call a week in advance to make the tee time. The food here is good, but the Eastern European girls behind the counter in the bar area are super slow at serving. Do not head into the snack shack in a rush if you want an egg sandwich, although they do have pre made sandwich wraps that are much faster for lunch. Check in area is a small window in the hallway inside, kind of like Bethpage. At $50 for NYS residents on a weekend, the greens fee is unbeatable. The course is 6800 yards from the tips, and if the wind is up can play much longer. No water views, but the course has a linksy feel to it. Almost all of the par 5s are reachable with a good drive, two of them with mid irons. Walk or ride any time, and enjoy the track. No boring holes, good mix of short and long ones. Greens are good enough, not super fast but decent speed. The layout really is tremendous though. Pro shop isn't bad, good selection of clubs and apparel. Range is nothing special at all, but you can hit drivers which is nice. Range is off mats. Cart girl is out and about, and 9 returns to the clubhouse if you only wanna get in a quick round or need to stock up on food, soft drinks, beers, etc. The bar has liquor too. Rounds can be long, 5-5 and a half hours on weekends, but tee times are not hard to come by. However, don't try to walk up without a tee time, you might not get out til very late afternoon. Be sure to snap a picture from the top of the third teebox looking down towards the clubhouse, awesome view. They have a public daily fee pool here too, although I've never been so can't comment on it. read more

Beautiful, bucolic spot. I can only refer to the pool which is fabulous! Never too crowded, chairs and shaded areas available in addition to the area being immaculate. I look forward to going to this pool every year. A beautiful place!!! The one thing I remember is years ago they had Shakespeare performances in the evenings on the lawn for a nominal fee. This place is awful. Let's start with the fact that they get you $93 for a round. And you have to pay extra for golf cart, and $7 for a bucket of balls on the range. We didnt not see a beverage girl until the turn on 9 so we had no choice but to get food and bathroom. We then proceeded to t off at 10 w/ no one behind us. For the next 2 holes 2 Different marshals hounded us like mall security rent a cops. I have played all over the world and never been treated like this. Think this place needs some new management because the course is pretty decent. read more

Just so happens I played this course the week after The Open Championship, and got to play in some of that tall thick Fescue grass we all saw Tiger Woods chunkin' the ball out of. Amazingly I only went in the thick stuff once, but it is EVERYWHERE, so be careful. First off, this place is super cheap. And long and beautiful to boot. I went to the driving range here the day before I played and looked down #4, and saw a hole straight off of the Golf Channel. Long, rolling, bright green fairway leading up to a well guarded slightly elevated green. So excited to play there. Pictures don't even give this place justice. Indescribable. So much so that I'd rather just list... PROS: ~Driving range to warm up on. ~Nice practice green. ~Friendly staff. ~Really nice layout(Google satellite view it before you go) ~Long tee times so your not getting chased the whole time. (I believe they have 9 minute tee times as opposed to 8 at most courses. That one minute makes a huge difference.) ~The water coolers were full, yayyyyyyyyyy... ~Challenging in every way. Blind second shot to a green guarded by a huge pond? They've got it. 200 yard carry to get on in two, or lay up to the right of another great lake? They've got it. Bunkers EVERYWHERE? Yup! ~Fast, quiet carts. ~GPS accurate within a yard. ~#12. Long par 3. Elevated tee, elevated green, death all around. Miss the green? Just go ahead and mark an X on your scorecard. CONS: ~They have NONE, this place knows what they are doing. Other courses should do their training here. read more

Very well maintained course for the price. Beautiful views, carts with gps and plenty of wildlife to see. The holes are challenging with water on a few holes and a lot of fairway and green side bunkers. In the pro shop they kind of act like you are bothering them but the rest of the staff is very friendly. read more

I love this course! Think it's the best public course on Long Island (aside from Bethpage Black). Great value for a course of this quality. It's hard, it's challenging, it tests every club in your bag. And it changes every time you play, depending on the wind, which does blow in Montauk! But the beauty, the wildlife and where you are make for a wonderful day of golf. And Charlie and his crew do such an unbelievable job of keeping the course in shape! I have been playing here for over 10 years. I am currently over 8 months pregnant and went with my husband to drop him off for his tee time so we could take a picture on the first tee to show our future baby. Instead of a nice commemorative picture, I was verbally harassed by both the ranger and the Pro. My husband even began to video them screaming at me because the whole thing was so unbelievable. I asked them to please just let me take a picture with my husband on the first tee and I was aggressively yelled at. I was told I would need to pay full price to walk up to the first tee for a picture. I am an avid golfer who hasnt been able to play all year because of my pregnancy and to have 2 men who have never had to carry a baby scream at me and tell me I would have to pay to walk up to the first tee for a picture with my husband on a course we have played every weekend in previous summers was unbelievably sexist. This is still a sport for men and I can't believe in 2020 a woman who is over 8 months pregnant is getting harassed at a public golf course. read more

The actual course layout is a gem and deserves a much higher rating but the staff on the "state" side is so bad it is actually comical. I say "state" side because the course is in a state park so the front desk and course staff are state employees while the pro shop is a private concern and much more professional. We arrived in very windy and wet weather but we're more than willing to get in the round. We teed off the first hole in driving rain and played 1 and 2 with no issues. As we were approaching the green on hole 3 the ranger approached us and informed us that the course was closing. He said we could go the desk and get a "rain check". It had been raining all night and had actually just stopped when we were informed it was closing. We are all from out of state so a rain check at that point does us no good. We asked for a refund but they told us that is not how it works. The conversation got very heated as we just paid $101.0 each for fees and were never warned that the course could be closing. The person that made the call to close the course was not even on the grounds so we could not even get an explanation as to why. Well after 5 good sized guys got very angry and were not about to leave they miraculously opened the course again and we were able to play. It is unfortunate that this course is run by people who have no idea how a course should be run because the layout and scenic beauty rates up there with the best.
